This story is horrifying yet the outcome was amazing.  Their story needs to be told!  This is from the Raccoon Valley Animal Sanctuary and Rescue here in central Iowa. Someone put 4 healthy, 3 week old kittens in an empty Meow Mix bag and threw them onto a Madison County road to be crushed by oncoming traffic. But for the nurturing instinct of a family dog, the horrific plan almost

(Reposted from an email mom received from IFAW - International Fund for Animal Welfare) African lions are disappearing. Since 1980, the population of African lions has dropped by nearly 50%. They've been eliminated from 78% of their historic range. And they face extinction throughout much of their habitat. There are several causes of their disappearance, including loss of habitat, loss of prey,

Really I can’t. She has been so busy, first it was getting settled into our new place after the fire.  Then the kids started school, then soccer started.  Really, no excuse. There are animals that need to be saved. Awareness that needs to be made. How am I supposed to do that if she isn’t helping me. I peaked over her shoulder today when she was telling someone about my blog.  She

Junie Watching The Parade Finally!  It's been a long time coming.  After the fire, mom had a laptop she was working from, but she hated working with the touch pad.  She didn't blog any more than the bare minimum. All is better now.  Mom and Dad bought a mobile home that is over twice the size of the apartment we lived in and everyone is happy.  So happy, mom added a

Junie's Mom, Heather, here.  I thought I'd post a quick update as to why there have been no blog posts.  Our apartment building was destroyed by fire.  We weren't there when it happened, but Junie and the lovebirds were.  My brother called and let us know that there was smoke rolling off of our building and we rushed back to save them. I was able to get Junie and 2 lovebirds

Junie chilling in her morning spot Like my hair?  I don't know if you can see it or not, but mom braided it to show dad that I am in serious need of some grooming again.  He didn't take the hint yet.  I actually don't mind the braid.  Much better than a pony tail sticking off the top of my head.  I mean seriously, why do that to a dog?  She says it's so I can see.

Junie avoiding the snow by standing on mom's feet. If you follow my mom's blog, you might have seen her post a dog food question yesterday. Junie hanging in her favorite spot That picture of me is me in my favorite spot.  It drives mom crazy.  She's worried I'll get burned on it.  She moves my bed farther away and I just get into the space between the radiator and my bed.  If she moves my bed against it, I move my bed away so I can get back in there and stay really warm. Alyce and One of the Girls reading I've been way too sporadic in posting.  Mom has decided that even on days that nothing is going on with me, she needs to help me post stories of animals around the world. Junie hanging by mom's desk Everyone has been sick around here.  Mom, one of the Girls, the Littlest Boy was taken to the ER the other night with something wrong with his eye.  It looked like it hurt a lot. Tis the season mom says. I'm healthy. Mom says I've put on a couple of pounds.  I noticed that some of my clothes weren't fitting right.  The Velcro would

The littlest boy giving Junie a kiss Now that I am completely comfortable here in my home, I have taken it upon myself to alert my mom to every noise that is around us. Especially at night. Tonight I have been on high alert.  I'm not sure what is out there beyond the sliding glass door and I am not about to leave my mom's comfy lap to go find out, but my mom says she's never felt me so

Junie and The Oldest Girl Again I had a wonderful Christmas full of new clothes (seriously, does a dog need a bathrobe and a flamenco dress?) and turkey and tons of love.  I hope yours was wonderful too! I thought today we'd focus on other animals who maybe did not have such a wonderful Christmas - or maybe they did.  Hopefully some were saved! SPCA: Protect your pets, please

Pardon the blurriness, Junie was too excited for Christmas! Merry Christmas from me and my family to you!  May it be full of happiness, joy, and many many blessings to you and yours! Stay safe, stay warm, and please watch out for your pets! Make sure if you live in a cold climate like I do that you don't leave your animals outside too long.  Or follow these safety tips to keep them

Junie In Her New Poncho I heard I have a bunch of new clothes under the Christmas tree, but mom won't let me wear them yet.  She said since I don't eat treats and a chicken breast would go bad under the tree after a few hours, that she got me clothes.  She did open up my poncho for me the other day.  I'm wearing it the picture.  Mom said I seem to like it more than my

Junie And The Oldest Girl Mom says that it's snow.  I don't think I have ever stepped in snow before. (Puppy mill dog, remember?  Lived in a cage for years.)  It snowed for the first time the other day.  Real snow.  Not just the flurries that wetted down the grass and made me not want to step in it.  A whole bunch of it that covered the grass, covered the porch,

Junie in her new sweater. She is so cute in purple. Mom has been mixing in Blue Buffalo Stews with my dry dog food.  When she picked up new food, she grabbed some new varieties including Blue Buffalo Wilderness Canned Dog Food, Salmon Recipe.  When she opened the can, she was mighty surprised to see it wasn't stew, it was, well, kind of mush.  Like what you would

Junie, burying into the blankets this morning. Since it's a whole 11 degrees out and I won't do anything but stay snuggled into my blanket on my furry bean bag in my warm sweater, mom said we should post about some more animals who have been saved or need to be saved today.  I love sharing stories of those who have been saved and though I hate the stories of cruelty, they need to be out

Junie the other day, pre-hair cut I don't know what I did to deserve this.  I really don't.  Dad decided the boys' hair was getting too long last night so he cut their hair. Mom said she had an appointment set up to get me groomed (didn't know what that was) on December 15th, her birthday, who wants to celebrate their birthday doing that (now that I know what it is)?  I guess
