Watch the breathtaking Viennese electronic project HVOB perform their new track "Always like this" in a live session at Pratersauna!

It’s dark and chilly when we approach Pratersauna. Normally the hip party crowd would be queueing at the entrance of this popular club, but today we enter through the back door. We know that we are going to meet one of the most exciting acts in town, yet we still don’t really know what to expect of this unusual filming session. A lot of secrecy surrounds the duo Her Voice Over Boys, in short HVOB. You won’t find many photos of Anna Müller and Paul Wallner, the masterminds behind the project. So it feels a bit like lifting a secret when we meet the two for the shoot. Formed in 2012 HVOB have created a lot of buzz among music enthusiasts and club goers with their organic, occasionally melancholic but always danceable beats, vocals and sounds. At Pratersauna they perform the beautiful “Always like this” with tlive drums and mindblowing visuals by lichterloh.

Watch vocal-groove-band Bauchklang perform the booming "Lagu" and an unplugged version of "Letter To Me" at Haus des Meeres!

The faint sunlight of this early spring day stimulates Vienna’s street life. On the ground level kids are cheering on the play field, up in the trees birds are twittering and from high on top of the massive flak tower comes a deep droning. Whoa! It’s Austria’s biggest vocal groove project resonating over the city! On the observation deck Bauchklang, the five-piece combo that produces the finest blend out of beatboxing, mouthpercussion and vocal sounds, are playing “Lagu”. Hard to believe that the band performs this heavily booming club track with the sheer power of their voice, their belly and midriff. Now that’s a buzz in the morning air! For the performance of “Letter To Me”, another track from the newly released album “Akusmatik”, Bauchklang step inside Haus des Meeres and literally “step into a new world” as the song indicates. In the habitat of sharks, sea turtles and morays they go for an exclusive acoustic performance. It nearly seems as if Bauchklang are miming the fishes’ mouths and lend their voices to these mute creatures. At the end of the song Andreas turns towards the fishes while his voice gently fades away like water under the eyes of these graceful species.

Watch The Boys You Know play an inspired rendition of "Clark" in the atmospheric setting of the University Library of Vienna!

The sun hasn’t risen yet when a bunch of young people gather in front of the University of Vienna. While the first creacking trams start rolling, the four-piece band warms up with coffee and cigarettes. They are like any other bunch of students except the fact that it is still ways too early in the morning for the student folks! Well, The Boys You Know are here to take over the University Library before the students flock in. The up-and-coming band tries not to be intimated by the atmosphere of the Great Reading Room – a room with grand 19th century interior design, dark-wooden bookshelves, characteristic green reading lamps and a skylight as the only other source of light. But dawn is near and The Boys You Know go for an inspired rendition of “Clark” that is featured on their debut album “Waste Your Time”. It feels surreal how Thomas’ mellow voice hangs over the room and how the band’s performance bathes the grand setting in an even warmer light. Oh, if only the students that arrive soon after could have known!

Watch the Danes of The Eclectic Moniker perform the upbeat "Easter Island" in the gloomy attic of Hotel Fürstenhof in Vienna!

We’ve filmed a whole lot of Copenhagen Sessions but we’ve still missed out on this band. Originally from Odense the 7-piece band now lives in the Danish capital. One of their outstanding features (apart from singer Frederik Vedersø’s massive full beard, which is not so special in Denmark) is the eclectic – as the bandname indicates – and calypso influenced sound. When we meet them in February in Vienna the combo brings some upbeat Carribean vibe into the gloomy attic-setting with their performance of “Easter Island”. “There’s happiness and sunshine as we dance“, Frederik sings, “We’ll be getting high with all the Rapa Nui in the sand …” Nothing better than getting carried away by this song on such a grey and chilly winter day!

Watch the ultimate summer session with Givers performing "Saw You First" & "Meantime" in a basketball cage in Vienna! Sounds like a burst of joy!

If we think back to the ultimate summer sessions, Givers score pretty high. The young band from Lafayette, Louisiana could not be bothered less by what we consider a hot and humid summer day in Vienna. However, it is not so much about the sweaty sports ground setting that brings back this sunshine vibe, but the uplifting music itself that approaches like a summer storm and explodes in a burst of joy. You can literally feel how much fun the combo has during the session! They kick off with the the infectious “Saw You First” and then go for a vibrant rendition of “Meantime”. Givers put in so much enthusiasm in their performance that Nick Stephans, playing flute and keyboard, even holds back the urge to jump up and fight the itching when a bug crawls up his butt. Now that’s what we call dedicated!

Der Nino aus Wien and his bandmates play a special winter session at Gerhard Hanappi Stadion, home of their favourite football club SK Rapid Wien!

“Rapid, Rapid, des is mei Mannschaft”, Nino aus Wien sings after he and his bandmates got the permission to perform right in the center of Gerhard Hanappi Stadion – on the lawn. For this festive occassion Nino and PauT wear scarf and flag of their favourite football club, SK Rapid Wien. The snowfall comes to an end when the Vienna boys go for a foreceful rendition of “Du hast ja recht” from their recent album “Bulbureal”, followed by an a cappella intermezzo called “Nach Hause”. On the stands with a good view on the pitch Der Nino aus Wien then opens with “Zimmer zu vermieten”, before they play the heart-rending “Die letzte Reise” with occasional airplanes passing overhead. However deeply moving and poetic the lyrics of this young and talented songwriter Nino Mandl may be, he is still a bit of a joker. Not only does their performance end with some cooing “Bru bru bru” sounds; Lather that day Der Nino aus Wien pays the mayor of Vienna a visit, still wearing his SK Rapid scarf while the mayor is known to be a supporter of the football rival FK Austria Wien.

On the last night of Primavera Sound Festival You Can’t Win Charlie Brown play a fulminant show in the heart of Porto. We meet the Portuguese band amidst the festival crowd after their gig at Hard Club. After some chattering with fans the six piece band is finally complete and ready for a short walk to the shiny Douro riverside. In this nightly postcard-like setting with the illuminated Ponte Dom Luis I arch bridge and the Jardim do Morro in the background You Can’t Win Charlie Brown do a marvelous take of “Sort Of”. In the dim light at a wooden gate the Lisbon-based band then strikes a melancholic chord with “Sad Song”. What a solemn ending!

The Austro-American supergroup Nowhere Train plays an early-morning session on the construction site of Vienna's new main railway station!

In 2009 five musicians from five different bands went on a 11-day train journey through Austria. Without money they played improvised shows wherever they were invited: In a treehouse, in a prison, in trains and rural taverns. What remains of this remarkable tour – apart from the memories of the participants and audiences – is a web diary, a movie, and now – finally! – a record. The Austro-American supergroup Nowhere Train consists of Ian Fisher, Jakob M. Kubizek (Love & Fist), Stephan Stanzel (A Life, A Song, A Cigarette), Frank Lebel (Play The Tracks Of), Stefan Deisenberger (Naked Lunch) and the new members Ryan Carpenter and Martin Mittlerstieler. Together they just released their debut album “Station”. And where else to shoot a session with Nowhere Train than in … a station! We meet the seven guys at 6 a.m. on a chilly November morning at the construction site of the new main railway station in Vienna. Before construction work starts and while the sun slowly appears on the horizon we get our safety vests and boots, walk through what is to become the main hall and set up on one of the platforms. Nowhere Train head into an energetic version of “Ashes”, the opener of their album, which certainly gets everybody in the right spirit for this early morning adventure. We record a second song a bit further back on the platform: The quiet and beautifully fragile “To All My Demons”. Slowly, the construction workers take over the station, some of them curiously peeking at the unexpected musical guests. They certainly have the right soundtrack for the working day in their ears now!

Primavera Sound Sessions Porto #2: Much-acclaimed songwriter Nick Garrie performs two beautfiul acoustic songs in a park across Casa da Musica!

As a 20-year old Nick Garrie, an Englishman with a Russian father and a Scottish mother, recorded his debut album “The Nightmares Of J.B. Stanislas” in Paris. He had signed a deal with French label DiscAZ, who threw in a 52-piece orchestra for the recordings, and everything was set for the release. Yet Nick’s prime supporter, label boss Lucien Morisse, took his life just a few days before the release date, and the album never got the audience it deserves. Disappointed, Nick turned his back on the music business, managed a Swiss ski ressort and a ballooning company, or worked as a teacher. Every few years, though, he put out records under different names, hitting a surprise #1 in the Spanish charts in 1984 as Nick Hamilton. Among collectors the rare copies of “J.B. Stanislas” became more and more sought after over the years. Finally, in 2005 (on Rev-ola Records) and 2010 (on Elephant Records) CD reissues of the album were put out. At this year’s Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona and Porto Nick Garrie performed his debut in its entirety for the very first time, to much acclaim from audience and critics (check out this short documentary). We met Nick just before his show in Porto in a small park close to the landmark Casa da Musica. Sitting on a war heroes monument, Nick performs beautiful versions of „Wine and Roses“ and „Deeper Tones of Blue“.

Primavera Sound Sessions Porto #1: Watch Veronica Falls perform a brand new track at a picturesque graveyard in Portugal!

Walking over cobblestone under the eyes of stone statues, Veronica Falls find themselves in the spring idyll of Porto’s Cemitério de Agramonte. Once the London-based band comes across the first snoozing cat, they are taken by these serene graveyard creatures. The bassist Marion Herbain is especially fond of them and goes stalking for more moggies. Roxanne Clifford, the band’s singer and guitarist, swarms out to take some more analog photos. In this picture-perfect setting of infectious tranquillity Veronica Falls perform their brand new single “Teenage”. It’s a guitar-driven song about an enthusiastic first love, about holding hands and carving names in trees, but there are already dark clouds on the horizon when Roxanne sings: “Driving home at night, I let you listen to the music you like. Then I’ll drop you home again.” As a short conversation indicates, the band then decides not to play their hit single “Found Love in a Graveyard”. It might have been just too obvious in this setting. Roxanne suggests to perform “The Fountain” instead, another melancholic and tuneful song!
