Who knew Lake Ella was originally known as Bull's Pond? A dated entry in the Lonely Planet travel guide provides this tidbit and some others about Tallahassee. Most notably it lists a number of fondly remembered, but long gone establishments.

Originally known as Bull's Pond, in the 19th century this sylvan, spring-fed pool was renamed by planter Jabez Bull for his daughter. It has long been a swimming hole, baptismal site and picnic spot. It was here, in 1867, that more than 2000 newly freed slaves celebrated Emancipation Day.

The Tallahassee Mall, with its active movie theatre and echoing hallways of empty retail, will go up for auction next week. Long after the Dillards department store left, that corner remains untouched, as if frozen in time.

This state archives photo from the 1990's shows a more active time. With over a million square feel, what can this property become?

When the Governor's Square Mall opened in the early 1980's, Tallahassee's 'other mall' began its slow decline, as did Northwood Mall before it. With the downsizing of state employees and the abundance of already vacant office spaces in this City, it seems unlikely this mall will become another giant office complex.

Several people I have talked with suggest a huge amusement park, complete with a Ferris wheel, leaving in place the AMC theatre. There was, at one time a miniature golf park in the back of the mall, so it would be like returning to its original roots.

On one of the busiest highways into the City from Interstate 10, its current state doesn't portray a prosperous or beautiful welcome. How would you transform this property?

Hot Muggy Afternoon: Why Not Enjoy Tallahassee?

Saturday was hot, so every stop my friends and I made, we parked in any shade we could find. We concluded it was better to walk a few more steps in the glaring sun if it meant returning to a shaded car.

Leaving the Leon County Main branch with 30 Eco-Trips in Florida checked out for three weeks (!) our first stop was a fantastic lunch at Wild Greens Cafe. Veggie burgers, special of the day Caprese salad, cold iced tea with mango and lemonade were enjoyed by all. The service was great, the ambiance amiable.

A trip to the 621 Gallery in Railroad Square Art Park, was boosted by tiny cake pops from Mayhem. For a dollar, the most delicious Mexican chocolate treats that are the perfect size for dessert. Intrigued by a unique umbrella, we stopped into ----- vintage shop.

A quick drive-by the check the progress of Cascades Park and its weird 'pond,' then off to the LeMoyne Arts Center for the Florida Artists exhibit. "You know," I remarked, "if it was April, we would have walked to LeMoyne from the library." It was hot enough for us to skip the sculpture garden, catching a glimpse of its loveliness through the gift shop window.

Still raving about the delicious greens in our lunch salad, we drove by to see where local produce is grown in town at the Dunn Street Youth Farm (home of iGrow) and Ten Speed Greens.

Our final stop was a newer shop in town, Peculiar Goods, a conglomeration of eclectic gift items.

Total time was about 4.5 hours. We're already making plans for another Saturday.

Thanks to all our voters on our unscientific poll. You agreed. It's official, "Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky" was selected as a possible replacement for the Florida's current state song, "The Suwannee River (Old Folks at Home)" by Stephen C. Foster.

It's not entirely singable. Now, it goes before the Florida Legislatute in March for their consideration.

since the closing of B Merrill's and its reincarnation as an eyeglass store, of all things, another long-standing restaurant has ended: El Chico's.
I remember celebrating birthdays there with the huge sombrero being placed on the birthday boy or girl's head (until the hat was unfortunately stolen). At some point in the late '80's they started seriously reheating most of their food in a microwave and I stopped going there.

Still, it's sad to see someplace go away, even if you didn't go there.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports that affordable housing is not St. Joe
Company 's interest.

Some call the Democrat a newspaper, but this is not news. When St. Joe (Arvida Development Corporation) requested original approval to build its Southwood complex, housing advocates lobbied for affordable housing to be incorporated into this multi-million dollar development. St. Joe said it couldn't possibly build affordable housing as a part of its 3,200 acre master-planned development (code for all the houses look alike). The Democrat article quotes St. Joe officials as saying they have "struggled to figure out how to build homes for less than $100,000." And company spokesperson Jerry Ray stated that "Our skills don't include the dcevelopment of that sort of product."

In the 4,700 unit development being built, Southwood homes range from $191,900 to $304,900 and up. You can buy an apartment--oops, I mean a townhome--with prices ranging from $172,900 to $195,900. State workers in the offices bordering Southwood earn 62% less than the national average for public employees according to a 1999 survey by Florida Tax Watch and many could not afford these houses prices.

St. Joe/Arvida builds developments throughout Florida with quaint names such as "Water Color" and "Summer Camp"

The Southwood brochure said "Welcome to a charming and progressive community now coming to life in Tallahassee, Florida. A truly inspired environment where people of all ages will enjoy the lifestyle they've always wanted to live." When I commented via E-mail on their marketing campaign, I noted the lack of diversity among the photos of smiling folks living and playing in Southwood. Even though they had solicited my comments, I never got a response. Seems the word "progressive" in their brochures may be misued.

Now the company wants to develop an additional 4,500 acres of land that it owns just south of its current Tallahassee development. A group recommending that building be allowed indicated that making more land available for homes will help reduce the cost of new homes.

Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor said people are mistaken if they expect St. Joe to provide affordable housing.

I say after the inital dealings with this company, expectations throughout the community are zero.

Commissioner Proctor is correct when he said that rather than building affordable housing for low-income residents, St. Joe paid into a government fund that provides for affordable housing outside of SouthWood. However, to date, no affordable house has been built with money from this fund managed jointly by the City of Tallahassee and Leon County.
