type='text'>Allegory, Ministry, and Triple A Reno

I realize that as a pastor I see allegory everywhere. Last Month, the AZ Diamondbacks sent ther overpaid set-up man David Hernandez to Triple A Reno. It was overdue. He's been terrible all season. This guy will make $1.25 million this year, and what he expected to happen, what manager Gibby expected to happen, and what GM K. Towers expected to happen, didn't happen. Can we trade him like he did Ian Kennedy? No? You mean no one would take him? Maybe he should look into a career change. Kirk Gibson describes the move; "He's struggled," said Gibson. "We're going to get him down in a different environment. ... the game's just kind of been cruel to him." This must be a huge dissapointment for Hernandez. I bet he cried like a baby. So what happens next? Well Hernandez is a big league pitcher. This guy is most likely going to come back, maybe even this season, maybe even for the D-Backs. This is what most analysts suspect. They're hoping that time in Reno will not so much improve his skills, but help him get his confidence back. Reno is a place for him to get a clear head, to become mentally focused and to get back in the game.

Pastors have no Triple A Reno. When they have a terrible season, there are no good places to go. I'm not talking about the bad guys. I'm talking about guys with good skill sets, proven seasons of ministry, and a genuine pastoral calling. Guys who had a season where ministry was kind of cruel to them. Too many of these guys are selling Nabisco cookies, enrolling for online universities, teaching community college classes, selling insurance, working for the VA, delivering pizzas, or running mortuaries and funeral homes. Most of them are NOT making $1.25 million this year. And some of them feel finished. They've lost their confidence. And they've cried like a baby. I'm one of these guys, and I keep meeting more guys like us. I am hearing these other guys' stories and it makes me thankful that my wife has stayed, and that I haven't been diagnosed as clinically depressed. It makes me thankful that I jumped out of the game when I did.

As a recovering church planter I wrestle with the label, calling, position, and office we call "pastor". I struggle with identity and am unsure of what tribes to identify with. I believe in the priesthood of all believers. I am passionate about qualified individuals doing genuine ministry in the marketplace. I have an over whelming sense of purpose that I am here in Phoenix to see and be apart of new churches being planted and to help those who ae outside of local faith communities to identify with others that will stir them up and gently nudge them towards faith and good works. I am still doing these things.

None of this has happened the way I expected it to. Sometimes I feel like I failed; like what happened and didn't happen are somehow my fault. Assigning blame is difficult. Furthermore, it seems futile and not helpful. I was obedient to go. Others were obedient to send me. Others were obedient to help us. Things just didn't work out the way we expected. I at least feel like I'm in good company. There have been way more qualified church planters with better funding and seriously more intense training and planning than I had, who had no greater succeses than I did. Sometimes I just wish there was a Triple A Reno. A place I could go and kill it for a season, so I could get a clear head to do what I am uniquely qualified and gifted to do; maybe not even to improve my skills, but at least to get my confidence back.

Today I sat in a meeting with four other ministers, only one of us is a "vocational" pastor. We strategized and
and planned, and began to build a stucture, so that we can do relational ministry together in a manner that will be a huge blessing to a unique group of local students. I am really excited about these possibilities. Perhaps this is what it fees like to be in Triple A Reno.

Studying Trait Leadership...Thinking about becoming a comedian.

Kirkpatrick
and Locke (1991) identified six trait characteristics. They indicated that
leaders are different from followers on the basis of drive, desire to lead,
honesty and integrity, self-confidence, cognitive ability, and knowledge of the
business. Kirk Patrick and Locke also suggest these traits can be learned. This is especially encouraging for someone
pursuing a Master’s degree in leadership.
Still, it is apparent that some people naturally and innately have a
special disposition to lead and motivate others.

All
of my life, I have been making people laugh.
My friends and family have been encouraging me that I missed my calling
and should have been a comedian. I have
looked into it and decided that stand-up comedy is a craft. A craft requiring education, practice, and
coaching that I do not yet have.

Leadership
is similar. For an individual to use
their skills effectively often requires education, practice, coaching, and also
patience. Perhaps one day I will be a
leader and a comedian. Perhaps I already
am one or the other. Perhaps I am
already both. Trait leadership, as well
as this discussion, are both limited due to their subjective nature. Despite that, it is helpful for those of us
moving towards leadership.

It soon became evident that this was a failed build and the efforts were aborted. Why didn't it work? Perhaps the wobbly table? Perhaps some combination of everyone moving and also the wobbly table? Perhaps the extractor was malfunctioning? We don't know. But the build was stopped. The machine was given time to cool down. The calibrations were checked. And the group tried again on a different table. I don't know if it worked. The ten year old and I had bailed to partake in Sonic's half price shakes. But we had a great night. We met some cool folks and learned a whole lot. And I was reminded that sometimes it just doesn't work.

Leah is literally days away from completing school. We are hoping and pushing for an Oct. 15th graduation. Septemeber has been very overwhelming with moving and a trip to CA to celebrate with Leah's brother who got married. We have a string of flu like viruses through our little family which I am currently trying to see through...

Last Night we had a great homegroup with folks from our church. I find great value in God's people meeting in homes, with food, and discussing the scriptures, sharing life together, and impacting each other's stories. I think everyone should do it. Its just not that easy...

Who's house will we meet at? Who will provide the food? What about kids? pets? football? curriculum? These are just the easy questions. Put together a diverse group of people from different traditions, cultures, and point of views and ask questions like "what do you think?". Oh My! On top of those you have to navigate both the "babbling brooks" (those who talk to much) and also the "dead seas" (those who don't talk at all). You navigate those who think every question is "too personal" and those with PHD's in TMI... either could potentialy sabotage healthy discussion. As a leader I struggle with gently steering the conversation. It might be easier to be hands off, watch the sparks and ignorance fly and then call time after 35 minutes. The other easy option would be to script and control the whole thing. Nah. There's something wonderful about the organic process of people learning courtesy, grace, and community together.

I'm getting better at it. It's an interesting skill. I'm just wondering how to put it on a resume.

Nice! CARES

Leah and I are officially accepted into (a not to be named ministry). Sometime between September 10th and 15th we will be moving into Coldwater Springs Apartment. (We will also be attending a wedding and Williams family reunion during this time). Some of the details are still up in the air. The apartment is actually very close to where we live now. We will stay friends with our neighbors (who will still be our neighbors, just on the other side of the gate). The kids will go to the same school they go to now. Leah will finish at Empire Avondale. And we will continue to Pastor Coldwater Church. Chris will continue to work for UPS, and he will stay on payroll at the hotel (that Hilton Family Discount is nice!). In the near future he will move from regularly working 16 hours a week at the hotel to merely filling in for vacations, peak seasons, and emergencys. Leah hopes to finish school in October and be working by November.

So what does (a not to be named ministry) do?

At the apartment we will assist the managers and leasing agents by planning great events, performing welcome visits, and doing we care visits. (a not to be named ministry) has an excellent bussiness model and the research is pretty overwhelming that apartments with (a not to be named ministry) teams have way better retention and happier residents. I'm sure some apartment management companies are very excited about having happy residents, but I'm sure all open their eyes when they see the thousands of dollars they save by turning apartments less. The evidence also shows employees stay longer when there is a (a not to be named ministry) team there to help them, appreciate them, and pray for them. Again...this translates into Big bucks for the management companies.

I thought this was a ministry?

54% on people in Metro areas live in apartments. Thats right, more than half. Less than 5% of apartment dwellers have any connection to a local church (compared to about half who dwell in single family homes). There are some real challenges for churches to get "in" to these communitys even if they would try, the gate is usually locked. We will live with these folks, inside the gate, become their friends and show them Jesus. They call it intentional relational evangelism and it's what Leah and I have been trying to be about. The cool thing is... the events, meeting space, and advertising are being funded or at least subsidized by the apartment company. NICE! We will be held accountable to attend training, have spiritual conversations, and yes they even track how many times we share the gospel. That'll be okay.

Aren't you busy planting a church?

YES! The events they want us to do are things we would do anyway; community gatherings, service projects, and intentional acts of kindness. They encourage us to work with outside organizations and even to have volunteers come help us with the events. Does this sound like an un official partnership? We will see. So it will be our "job" to meet and greet all the new residents in the community (about 33 households last month). Not only do they give me the address, they give me a reason to be there. Oh yeah, I also get the keys to the pools and clubhouse. YES! Don't get too excited. Its alot like doing campus ministry at a public school. We are governed by Fair Housing and I am quickly becoming familliar with conceopts like the "five resident rule" (if five residents ask for a Bible Study than it's cool). There are no ristrictions however on us having a book club, philosophy night, or educational seminars. I am confident our past experience and current perspective will allow us to navigate this well. We also see this as a wonderful oppurtunity that will be a blessing to our church and in a new way allow our church to be a blessing to our community... specifically an extrememly "unreached" portion of it.

What about moving your kids into an apartment?

Yes we have these concerns and thanks for expressing yours. We will be moving into a 3 bedroom apartment that occupies just under 1,400 square feet. It also has a full size washer/dryer, his and her sinks, and other cool upgrades you might choose if you were building a new home. We also get access to amenities like the gym, movie room, tanning beds, and pools. Yes... you can come visit. Apartments have changed a lot even since we moved out of Palm Court eight years ago. More and more we want our kids to know the adventure that is following Jesus. More and more the so called American dream of owning a home and having a nice car, big tv and stainless steel appliances seems like a distraction to this. We don't mean to pass judgment on anyone else, but for us this seems like a good way to practice living simply.

So that's what we're up to. We are pretty excited. We covet your thoughts and prayers.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://topherspoon.blogspot.com/2009/08/who-cares.html' title='Who...? We came home from camp only to be waiting still for some of the financial provision that we are planning on... but evidently still waiting for.

On Saturday my phone charger broke and and so did my car alternator. I understand these are minor inconveniences but seriously? Not really the evidence of the new season I was hoping for.

I was hopeful that Sunday at church would be a kind of homecoming with lots of excitement and record attendance. It was just another hot Phoenix Sunday with a lot of people missing and it's own unique struggles. Again, this is something I'm used to but it's not really indicative of a new season of harvest and fruitfulness.

I spent the entirety of Monday morning with Isaac at the dentist. He had a couple of fillings, a tooth extraction, and several crowns... Oh and lots of drugs to try to minimize the kicking and screaming. They had more work to do on the top but I stopped them when the bill hit $2,000. Welcome new season of monthly installments! It fills like another car payment... if only I could drive my son's baby teeth to work. CASH for CLUNKERS?

Today is meet the teachers night and it's also Leah's first day back at school. Today I got to take gum out of Olivia's hair and tomorrow both the girls get shots. I've spent this past week at Camp SA HA LE in Big Bear Lake, CA speaking at a regional youth camp. It's been awesome. Exhausting, but awesome. 11 speaking opportunities. 10 of them unique messages. 70 some campers from four churches in two different states. It was a good week for campers. It was a good week for me. Tuesday afternoon I received the call from (a not to be named ministry) that we've been waiting for. We will interview next week to be the ministry team at our first choice property. I'm a bit in awe of God's timing and purpose. Long story short...we may be moving as early as September one. Relational ministry, new opportunities, significant monthly savings... here we come!

Woman at the Well

I'm sharing this with students this week.

Finishing Well.

This season finally seems to be coming to a close. Next week I will be the guest speaker at the summer camp I spent about twelve years of my life attending. It seems like a marker, and hopefully it is the bookend to what has been a very difficult season. Something big needs to change and I am ready. Both of my part time jobs have been giving hours like they were full time. It's nice for the checkbook but difficult for the schedule. Once I get through camp we will shift to kids going back to school and focusing on Leah finishing school.

I continue to shine and grow professionally at UPS and the Hampton Inn but I feel like real potential maybe limited at both of these places. IF there were some upper management changes at UPS I would be excited to stay, endure another peak, and see how raises pan out in the spring. IF a full-time driving opportunity became available at the hotel, I think I would jump all over it. Generally speaking I think ,most people who don't work at UPS think working at UPS is a better job than it is. I also think people would be surprised to know what a van driver makes after tips and gifts. If none of these things pan out... back to daily checking jobing.com and career builder. I think eventually I could get in at UOP or a similar school working in enrollment.

Sometimes I wish there was more wealth in church planting, but for now I am helpful that soon I might have ONE non ministry job that would allow some sustainability in our home.

Leah will finish school and get a job. Then we will join the rest of the country as a two income house doing our best to raise our kids well.

CARES is still green lights. We know yes, just not where or when... except for close and soon.

I'm realizing this post is alot like the last...just trying to keep our loved ones in the loop. We are keeping on. We are survivng... not yet thriving but at least survivng.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we are hopeful for these next steps.

Ready for a New Season...

I am ready for somethings to change. Wearing the constant hats of Dad, Husband, and Pastor while trying to work two jobs and care for my kids is insane! I've never been afraid of hard work. In a weird way I've often sought after it, being drawn to the challenges. But despite my best efforts it just seems like the wheels are spinning with out producing forward motion.

More and more, autumn is becoming my favorite season. In a desert where our seasons are nice, nice, nice, and extremely hot!... autumn is the first relief from extremely hot. I am looking forward to this autumn as a season of change once again. Leah will be finishing school. I don't think either of us knew what a huge impact this would have on the rest of our lives. We are both older and adding one more thing has had a much bigger effect than it used to. Regardless, Leah has learned a lot, including recession resistant marketable skills. Come the fall she should have more flexibility with her schedule, a means of income, and greater capacity to run our house the way she'd like to.

We are going to be be placed as a CARES team with apartment life christian ministries. We are already approved and just waiting for the where question to be answered. We will serve like chaplains / activity directors for an apartment complex, and receive severely discounted rent in exchange. Moving into an apartment seems backwards, but I am convinced the American dream of owning a home and a dog is overrated. I am also really looking forward to this opportunity to reach the un churched and demonstrate the love of Jesus in an apartment community. The reduction in rent may allow me to cut back on my other work hours and/or allow us to get ahead a little bit on the debt and bills front. The time I spend as a CARES team will overlap some with what I do for the church, and those two roles should really compliment each other. I also recieved a call from the area director this week to talk about a certain apartment possibility...in the same neighborhood we live in right now. If this works out, it would mean very little adjustment for our kids as far as friends and school and also for our daily commutes.

Olivia is going to start kindergarden. Both her and Isaac will be in school. We just need to come up with a plan for Abi and I will have a real plan to get sleep. I have found watching three kids and sleeping is impossible. Inevitably one will not happen. All this to say... I am hopeful for what's a head.

Right now we are all okay. I am thankful for the various ways God has provided for us, and I don't want to miss all the oppurtunities that exist here and now. I'm just wondering how long this will last.

I understand...

...why people steal from Microsoft, Wal Mart, and their cable provider. I'm not condoning... I'm just saying. Generally I lean towards the information should be free bunch, however, I understand the idea of liscenses and proprietary information.

When our sending church bought us a computer for our new church plant they paid aprox. $200 to have Office Pro 2007 installed on the machine. They also paid for a service contract through 2011. Recently the hard drive on this machine crashed. I have no idea were those important discs that came with the machine ended up at and I have spent the last three hours of my life being transfered back and forth between Dell and Microsoft with each saying the other one has the ability to get me up and going again with out buying a new liscense. I am convinced that is not so...(which really bothers me as far as integrity and customer service are concerned).

So dell would be happy to sell me a new copy for $900! I laughed and said, "Why don't you sell me two new machines?" I finally hung up. This whole process has left me really unhappy with Dell, Fed Ex and Microsoft. I didn't like 2007 that much anyway. I found a copy of 2003 I'll be able to use. I'm certain I'll eveuntally find the discs that came with my machine. There'sjust a principle here I really disagree with. I am defeated and dissapointed. I am a goggle docs guy for life. OpenOffice... a new biggest fan.

It would cost Dell nothing to help me download a new copy and give me a new product key. It would cost Microsoft nothing to help me download a new copy and give me a new product key. I already paid for the liscense and they both know it! This is what makes me want to drive off a cliff... and lump both companies in with Wal-Mart and the cable companies. Makes me want to be Robin Hood.

When it Rains...

The last week has been pretty crazy around our house. Last Friday, Abi went to urgent care to be treated for what we thought must be a bug bite. Urgent care sent us the the ER where they told us she had a staph infection and would need to be admitted. She was released Sunday. I wish I could say everything else has been roses, but I can't. We continue to have several financial challenges (the bill for the hospital, just our co-payment and co-insurance, was $750), not including buying prescriptions and meals and gas back and forth to the hospital. Sunday morning I must have been distracted, trying to get two kids to church and be ready with out my beautiful wife... I hit a pole at storage and created some custom body work for the front bumper of our van. We woke up Wednesday morning to ants in our bed and no water at our house. It's been challenging. Yes.

Despite these challenges we press on. Lots of good things are happening at church. We have a team of 14 from Minnesota helping us with our outreach activities this week. We are going to have a great neighborhood party this Saturday...sno cones, bouncers, ponies. Yes, I said Ponies! We handed out a ton of cold water yesterday and have more waiting to be handed out tonight. I am also very excited for the oppurtunity to be speaking at the FCA youth camp this summer. Just wish I could focus on these things and not be so distracted by all the other junk. AZ style.

After being a youth pastor for one decade... I've been to my fair share of Middle School promotions. Today I went to my first in Arizona. Some Observations about where I live:

There were only 60 students being promoted. This allowed for the ceremony to be inside... out of the elements, and there was plenty of space for friends and family.

It's not even memorial day... and school is out. While the rest of the country does Dads and Grads. It's going to take me a while to get used to Moms and Grads.

It was at an elementary school. This was the first 8th grade promotion at one of the oldest schools in Maricopa county. They are actually moving away from the middle school model in favor of a k-8 model. This is still a very interesting discussion to me.

Where were the white people? While I understand and appreciate the racial diversity of my neighborhood and long for the day when I don't notice skin color, today I did. Out of the 60 students, three were white. Today I have been pondering what cultural implications this must have as a young church plant trying to serve the community.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://topherspoon.blogspot.com/2009/05/8th-grade-promotion-az-style.html' title='8th Grade Promotion...
