Frickleburgers in Cathedral City (68375 E. Palm Canyon Drive – Highway 111) makes one of the best hamburgers we have had anywhere – and the best we have found in the Inland Empire. In addition to making great burgers, it’s even fun to just say “Frickleburgers.”

Frickleburgers is a small place with big burgers and flavors. It was a good sign that while waiting for our burgers the worker who took the order was having a discussion with customers about burger joints and the quality of various burgers.

We had the The Mother Frickle ($7.99) topped with cheddar, slaw, fries and onion rings, and a Frickleburger ($6.99) topped with American cheese, slaw, fresh and grilled onions, ketchup and an onion ring. The self-designed Frickleburger was outstanding. The meat has Eastern European seasonings that give it a great flavor and despite being cooked to medium was incredibly juicy. The cheese and toppings combine to make this hearty burger one of the best we have had. The Mother Frickle was very good but the fries may have prevented some of the other toppings from making the burger reach its full potential. This little burger joint is world class.

There are some incredible sounding burgers designed by Frickleburger, but also and extensive list of toppings for customers to choose from to design their own. In addition to a great burger patty, you can choose chicken schnitzel, bratwurst, frankfurter, veggie burger or a grilled chicken sandwich. Cheese choices are American, Swiss, cheddar, blue, and Cheez Whiz. Toppings include most of the traditional choices along with cole slaw, brown gravy, chili, sautéed mushrooms, sweet pickles, grapefruit, black forest ham, fried egg, dill relish, and onion rings – along with many others.

One burger we did not get to that sounded especially noteworthy – and potentially deadly – is The Big Nasty ($9.99). No bun, but diners can choose between two Frickleburgers, brats or franks that are then put on a bed of fries and onion rings and covered with chili and cheese.

On the We Be Trippin web site, The Franci ranked this burger as a 10 out of 10 – and only the second burger priced under $9 to earn that ranking. It is about as good as a burger gets.

KROQ and GoldenVoice The Black Keys will be playing at the Honda Center October 8th, 2012. They will be sharing the stage with the indie rock duet Tegan and Sara. Both of these performers are slated to tour together with an additional stop at the Staples Center. Both performers have already sold out shows in Chicago’s United Center, DC’s Verizon Center and two nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The Black Keys latest album, El Camino, was released in December of 2011 and it reached critical acclaim. It’s easy to see why these two great acts would sell out any venue.

AEG has got you covered and will begin selling tickets Friday, May 18th at 10 am. However there is a presale available on Thursday, May 17th until 10 pm with password: El Camino. Tickets in advance range from $39.50-$59.50. Here is your chance to score some great seats at an amazing concert with two of todays hottest indie groups.

Spend some time with just you and your dog, or call your friends and arrange a “Dog Pack” to collect pledges as a team. Get the kids involved with a group of 3 or more (16 and under) in their own “Dog Pack” where they can come up with their own team name and compete against you! First 500 walkers will receive a special goodie bag and raffle ticket, with a chance to win amazing prizes like a 2 night stay at the Mission Inn!

Come early for a pancake breakfast and visit the KOLA 99.9 prize caravan. Old Riverside Foundation’s Annual Vintage Home Tour 2012

Celebrating Riverside’s citrus heritage is the theme of Old Riverside Foundation’s 21st annual Vintage Home Tour, which takes place this Saturday, May 19, 2012.

Event Info

The self-guided tour showcases four privately owned homes near Victoria Avenue in the city’s historic orange greenbelt as well as a downtown church with strong citrus ties.

The four homes are the James and Jessie Shaw House (1899), Puffer-Lamar House (1900), Mazzetti Bungalow (1917) and Krinard-Cage House (1925). Each house will contain a docent assisting guests with questions and tour info.

Calvary Presbyterian Church

As an added bonus, downtown Riverside’s Calvary Presbyterian Church will be offering tours of its stained glass sanctuary. The church, which was the family church for citrus canal builder Matthew Gage, is celebrating its 125th anniversary and will have historic photos, documents and a timeline from 1887-1947 on display.

A big part of each year’s home tour is the “Restoration Faire and Vintage Mercantile” at the Weber House featuring local vendors offering restoration tips and wares. Built by Riverside architect Peter J. Weber, the house — located at 1510 University Avenue — is noted for its eclectic architecture and early eco-friendly designs and serves as headquarters for Old Riverside Foundation.

Also on hand at the Weber House will be samples from the recent Fox Theater architectural salvage sale as well as accumulated furniture and Old Riverside Foundation vintage salvage pieces.

The self-guided home tour runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., rain or shine. Tickets are $15 ($20 day of tour) and are available at: www.oldriverside.org. Proceeds will help benefit historic preservation efforts of Old Riverside Foundation.

Rock the Bells 2012 was announced on Tuesday, May 15th and already there’s a huge buzz going on. But when you consider how many amazing artists that Guerilla Union managed to line up, it makes sense. This year Rock the Bells is going to be a Two Day event and will feature some hip hop legends as well as some fresh faces. Rock the bells won’t just stay in San Bernardino this year, in fact they will be going up to the Bay Area and then over to New Jersey. Needless to say, this is a big year for Rock The Bells.

Rock the Bells will be held on August 19th and 20th at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino. August 25-26 in Mountain View, California and September 1st-2nd in Holmdel, New Jersey. Now for the fun part, here’s who you can expect to be at Rock the Bells this year:

Yes, you read all of that correctly. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is back together and performing at Rock the Bells 2012. How they managed to get all of these acts together for this event is beyond me but know that they did it for the fans. In fact, Chang Weisberg, the main man over at Guerilla Union, made it clear that this festival is for the fans of hip hop and basically put this together just for us. Chang also wanted to make sure that the city of San Bernardino was thanked personally for having, “faith in Rock the Bells and letting it be a two day show.” So, not only does Guerilla Union give everything to the fans but it also pays respect to the Inland Empire for hosting them all these years. You can’t ask for a better group of people to put on this event. They care about you, the fans, as much as they care about the music.

Tickets will be going on sale Saturday May 19th at 10 AM. There is going to be a presale available on May 18th with the password: History. Make sure you get your tickets and experience hip hop festival history. This is one for the books folks.

LA Wine Fest 2012

Wine lovers are in for a big treat as the Los Angeles Wine Fest hits Raleigh Studios in Hollywood on June 9 and 10.

The 7^th Annual LA Wine Fest is set to have vendors serving more than 500 wines, spirits and brews along with some of SoCal’s best food trucks on hand to keep bellys full.

If you’re looking to learn how wine and food go together, there’ll be a few classes about wine, along with other classes on Scotch. Like any other wine or beer festival, there will be live entertainment. On Saturday, June 9, Jane Fuller and Mike Gallegos will be performing, and on Sunday, June 10, salsa band Sazon performs.

The LA Wine Fest runs from 2pm to 6pm on Saturday, June 9, and from noon to 5pm on Sunday, June 10.

Tickets run on the high ends ($80 with fees), but the list of participating wineries – from California, Hungary, Slovenia, France, Spain and Israel – makes it worth it.

Riverside’s Raincross Chorale Goes Back to Bach on Sunday, June 3

Fans of Johann Sebastian Bach have a treat in store at the upcoming Raincross Chorale concert in Riverside.

The 45-voice group will perform Bach’s Magnificat, with orchestra at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at the Calvary Presbyterian Church, 4495 Magnolia Ave. Tickets are $15.

Light and bright, with prodigious runs and trills and interlocking harmonies, this is one of Bach’s many masterpieces for choral singers. It is a setting of the text that is the Biblical response of Mary to the idea that she will be the mother of the Messiah: “My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.”

This is not an easy piece, and it is not performed very often. But inside the resonant sanctuary of Calvary Presbyterian, it will sound just like it should.

“The singers have been working hard to keep up with J.S. Bach, who seems to be composing for the harpsichord rather than the human voice,” said Steve Kester, director of the chorale.

Bach was born in 1685 and died in 1750. Raised in a family of professional musicians, he lived a relatively long life and was a prolific composer and performer of baroque church music in Germany.

More recent works on the program include a 2012 composition by Laura Farnell, the elegaic “A Song of Night;” upbeat settings of the Sanctus and the Benedictus; and a Stephen Foster medley that blends his most popular songs, including, “Oh! Susanna,” “Camptown Races” and “Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair.”

Raincross Chorale concert, 3 p.m. June 3 at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverside

The Raincross Chorale is a non-profit organization in its 13^th season. Founded to deliver fine concerts, as well as to raise money for continuing scholarships, the chorale traditionally showcases scholarship winners at this Spring concert.

One of those scholarship winners, Sarah Horn, a graduate of California Baptist University, will be featured as the soprano soloist in the Magnificat. Other soloists are: Loydene Keith, alto; Jonathan Osbrink, tenor; and Joshua Beld, bass. The group’s accompanist is Sue Shelton.

The Raincross Chorale is supported in part by the city of Riverside and the Riverside Arts Council, as well as by private donors. All proceeds from the concert will support scholarships for local college students pursuing musical studies.

“We continue to depend on the support of private donors to support the orchestra at this concert,” said Cyndee Miers, president of the chorale board. “We are so grateful for their support.”

They’ll be playing one game at the Citizens Business Bank Arena on October 10th and also one at the Honda Center on October 16th. This is a great opportunity to catch an early game and get to see The Los Angeles Lakers a little closer to home. The Lakers will also be playing games at the Staples Center, Fresno, Las Vegas, and San Diego.

JazzReggae Festival at UCLA

If you’re looking to kick off the summer season with some good vibes and some good music then the JazzReggae Festival at UCLA is up your alley.

It’s in its 26th year and offers two long days of Jam and Reggae music, dreadlocks, live art, and red, yellow, and green stripes. Headlining the festival’s Jam Day on May 27 are The Roots. Also performing are Bobby Womack (think of the Gorillaz song “Stylo”), Gary Clark, Jr., Thundercat, Selah Sue and Sonnymoon.

Shaggy is headlining the event’s Reggae Day on Memorial Day, May 28. Also performing that day are Tarrus Riley, Collie Buddz, Alison Hinds, Don Carlos and Cris Cab.

The JazzReggae Festival takes place at UCLA’s Intramural Field. Tickets can be bought for one or both days, at about $30 a day (you can save some coin buying pre-sale). Organizers are also offering deluxe passes at $65 a day that include free meals and a shaded, primo location to enjoy the music. With The Roots and Shaggy headlining, don’t be surprised if the event draws a sell out crowd.
