Headlining the show is Rory Scovel, who has become a favorite in the festival circuit, performing at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, Vancouver Comedy Festival, Seattle Comedy Competition, Del Close Improv Marathon, Bumbershoot Festival, Sasquatch Music Festival and Chicago Improv Festival. His CD, “Dilation,” is currently available on iTunes.

Nate Bargatze brings his homespun Tenessee-based comedy to the Barn for the first time. He has appeared on Comedy Central Presents, Conan, Bonnaroo, CMT, and has won both the New York Comedy Festival and the Boston Comedy Festival. He has also made five trips to Iraq and Kuwait to perform for the troops.

Alice Wetterlund has performed at clubs such as Comix and Broadway Comedy Club, Upright Citizens Brigade NY and San Francisco’s Punchline, and on such critically-acclaimed shows as College Humor Live, Big Terrific, and Tigerlily, as well as at Bridgetown and Women in Comedy Festivals. She’s also starred in TV commercials for AT&T, Budweiser, BMW and Maxwell House.

Los Angeles-based Omar Nava will serve as master of ceremonies. He has performed at the Hollywood Improv, and Last Laff Standing.

Comedy Apocalypse is the longest running comedy series in UCR history. Previous presenters, including Al Madrigal (The Daily Show), Shane Maus (Comedy Central), Greg Fitzsimmons (4 Emmy Awards), Dean Edwards (Saturday Night Live), Willie Barcena (Leno), and Jesse Joyce (writer Academy Awards).

Grandin’s appearance is part of the UC Riverside Presents Series in partnership with Dr. Jan Blacher, founding director of the Graduate School of Education SEARCH Family Autism Resource Center. The talk is free and open to the public, with parking available in Parking Lot 1 to non-permit holders for $5. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

In 2010, Grandin was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. Also in 2010, Claire Danes starred in a popular HBO film about her life.

“We are very excited that Temple Grandin accepted our invitation to come to UCR,” said Todd Wingate, director of the Highlander Union Building. “She has accomplished so much in her life as a leader in animal rights and autism advocacy and I thought that she would be inspirational to our students and campus community.”

“One thing I’m going to want want to talk about are different kinds of mind,” Grandin said via email. “Each type of mind has a unique way of looking at things and when they come together they can do amazing things.”

Assistant Director of Cultural Events Denise Stadelbacher said that seating is first come, first serve and advised people to arrive early.

“We are excited to host a WNBA game on our campus,” said Athletics Director Brian Wickstrom. “This is a great step towards community outreach and this event will attract a lot of people to our campus.”

The Sparks and Shock have combined to win five WNBA Championships with the Sparks winning in 2001 and 2002 and the Shock taking home the title in 2003, 2006 and 2008 when they were located in Detroit. When the Shock won the 2003 title, they upended the Sparks in what many consider to be the best WNBA Finals ever played.

Los Angeles finished the 2012 season with a 24-10 record, good enough for second place in the Western Conference. The Sparks then beat San Antonio two games to none in the first round of the WNBA Playoffs, before falling to top-seeded Minnesota in the Conference Finals.

Carol Ross returns for her second season as head coach of the Sparks. She joined the team in January of 2012 following three seasons as an assistant with the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, and 16 seasons as head coach of the Florida Gators (12 years) and the Ole Miss Lady Rebels (4 years) women’s basketball teams.

The Sparks are led by 2008 MVP and two-time US Olympic Gold Medalist Candace Parker who averaged 17.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.30 blocked shots a year ago. Teammate Kristi Toliver paced the squad with 17.5 points and 4.9 assists per game in 2012.

Tulsa, who relocated to Detroit prior to the 2010 campaign, was 9-25 on the year, finishing in fifth place in the West.

The Shock are coached by Gary Kloppenburg, who got his start in collegiate coaching at California’s Lassen Community College. His NBA stops include stints as an assistant with the Charlotte Bobcats and Toronto Raptors, while his WNBA resume includes time with the Indiana Fever, Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury. He also has stamps from the the Continental Basketball Association the Venezuelan Professional League on his coaching passport.

The Shock’s Glory Johnson returns for her second season in the pros after averaging 11.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game during her rookie campaign in 2012. Tulsa also recently traded for a pair of veterans in 2011 WNBA Champion Candace Wiggins and 2005 WNBA Champion Nicole Powell. Both players plied their trade collegiately at Stanford.

The Sparks and Shock split their four meetings from a year ago with both teams winning a pair of games on their respective home courts.

The 45-voice group will be accompanied by orchestra. Founded to deliver fine concerts, as well as to raise money for continuing scholarships, the non-profit Raincross Chorale traditionally showcases young singers who are scholarship winners at this Spring concert.

Melodic and light, the Rutter Magnificat was composed in 1990 and contains several soaring movements for a soprano and the chorus. It is a setting of the text that is the Biblical response of Mary to the idea that she will be the mother of the Messiah: “My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.”

“Rutter is a great modern composer, a favorite for choirs because of the beautiful melodies,” said Steve Kester, director of the chorale.

Rutter was born in London in 1945 and published his first compositions while a student at Cambridge. He is an active composer still, writing both large and small-scale choral works, orchestral and instrumental pieces, music for television, and specialist writing for such groups as the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the King’s Singers.

Other works on the program include sacred anthems such as “Send Out Thy Light” and “Majestic Holy One,” and popular standards such as “You Raise Me Up”; “Look to the Rainbow”; “What a Wonderful World”; and “Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes.”

The group’s accompanist is Sue Shelton.

The Raincross Chorale is supported in part by the city of Riverside and the Riverside Arts Council, as well as by private donors. All profits from the concert will support scholarships for college students pursuing musical studies.

“We continue to depend on the support of private donors to support the orchestra at this concert,” said Rich Cardullo, a long time Raincross singer and member of the chorale board. “We are so grateful for their support.”

Michael Rayner, as seen on Sesame Street and The Late Show with David Letterman, will be expanding Flappers Comedy Club and Restaurant’s acclaimed Two Milk Minimum family-friendly comedy show to include performances in Burbank on Saturdays and in Claremont on Sundays, all shows at 4:30pm, tickets $10. The show is a 60-minute performance that features a rotating cast of outlandish, zany, amazing magicians, jugglers, musicians, improv artists, puppeteers, and novelty acts.  Each week features performers seen on Nickelodeon, the Disney Channel, and the Cartoon Network, and have included Joseph Tran (The Magic Castle), Corey Edwards (Hoodwinked!), and Dee Bradley Baker (SpongeBob Squarepants).  The show has been described as “preposterous brilliance” and “whacky jugglement,” a combination of hilarious tricks and stunts with uproarious stand-up and a bounty of improvised fun.

Michael Rayner performs locally with top comics Patton Oswalt, Margaret Cho, Jimmy Dore and Frank Conniff in Cartoon Dump, and is one of the top booked acts in both the Inland Empire and Los Angeles County Library Systems. He frequently pops up in TV commercials.  He played a hapless gas station attendant who tries to take a photo of Elvis in an Energizer battery commercial and has appeared with Ringo Star, Jane Seymour, Neil Patrick Harris and Anthony Quinnpromoting other worthwhile products.   Maybe his proudest achievement was having the pre-dead Frank Sinatra personally approve him to promote his compilation CD for a Capitol Records commercial.  When not performing, Michael has written for E! Entertainment, the Gameshow Network, Nickelodeon, Backstage West, Modest Proposal and the Spark Factory.  He’s married to Moira Quirk and has two little girls who all help him dress.
