The mysterious unfairness of grace

“Life isn’t fair.” This was one of the most annoying things that adults used to say to me when I was a child. All it did was sharpen my sense of injustice. Life might not be fair, but it would be a whole lot fairer if they made my older sister give me the biggest bit of cake.

The belief that life ought to be fair is not confined to children. Fairness is part of our national creed, as any queue-jumping foreign visitor soon discovers. We like a level playing field. Nobody should have an unfair advantage. No cheating. If cheaters win, they are actually losers, because the other side has won the moral victory.

These, along with team spirit, are some of the ideals that sport has traditionally been thought to instil in school children. But in recent years the role of sport has been questioned. Does it impart a sense of fair play, or is competition – with its inevitable winners and losers – inherently unfair? Can we achieve a level playing field when some are gifted and some are not? This has led to the emergence of the “everybody has won, and all must have prizes” sports day. The idea is that if the event is noncompetitive, every pupil can take part and enjoy the experience. Apart from the ones who are brilliant at sport and like winning, that is. It isn’t fair on them, but they, with their unfair advantage of talent, will prosper anyway. In an unfair world it is fairer to be fair to the most vulnerable group. Comprehensive school pupils should have an easier route into Oxbridge and my older sister should give the biggest slice to me.

It looks as though the ideological pendulum is now swinging back the other way. Gordon Brown is planning a £100 million package which will offer each pupil five hours of sport a week and encourage competitive sports days and interschool tournaments. With the 2012 London Olympics on the horizon this may be no bad thing. Valuing participation above excellence may produce well-rounded human beings, but it will not guarantee gold medals. Part of Brown’s motivation here is his own positive experience of sport at school. We assume that it also harmonises with his understanding of the Christian faith.

What has Christianity to say about sport? The Bible makes use of a range of sporting metaphors, of course. The Apostle Paul draws on the imagery of athletics in his First Epistle to the Corinthians (ix, 24). Here he comes down squarely on the Brown side of the debate: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.” The life of faith is not a sprint, or a fun run, or the Caucus-race that baffled Alice, in which we run when we like and leave off when we like and end up with a prize anyway.

True prayer begin when we find the kingdom whitin

“How do you begin to pray?” It is a natural question to ask someone who already takes the spiritual life seriously and who is seeking further guidance. When I raised this question once the person replied: “I say the Our Father.” Then after a slight pause he added: “It usually takes me about 20 minutes.” He wasn’t boasting. He was just giving me information.

It may at first seem extraordinary that that prayer, even though it is the prayer the Lord taught his disciples, should absorb someone for so long every day. It has become so familiar. And yet the words invite us to return again and again, not for precise analysis, but to ponder. Each one will find something different.

For me the hub of the prayer, its central petition, is “Thy kingdom come”. That is the request and indeed the desire that drives the prayer as a whole. And whose kingdom is it? It is the Father’s kingdom. Which Father? The one who is in Heaven and who is defined by holiness: “Hallowed be thy name”. This name is not an arbitrary word; it identifies who the Father is. It does so by calling Him holy. Holiness is not a property, something the Father has; it is rather code for the very depths of the divine being.

Then we cast our central petition in fresh terms. The kingdom we pray for is that condition where this holy Father’s will is realised perfectly. And so we pray that the kingdom may come among us through His will being fulfilled perfectly not only in Heaven, but here on Earth as well: “Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.”

But these aspirations may seem all too vague. What can it mean in practice to fulfil God’s will among us, in our world, our society and culture? Instead of an answer, we seem to change tack. For next we pray: “Give us this day our daily bread.” But the shift is more apparent than real. The bread we seek is not a daily square meal, vital as that may be. Beyond ordinary food we are asking for something more profound: to be sustained in our service of the kingdom. We are praying: “Give us what we need this day and every day to make the kingdom come, to be its true servants.” Some of us, of course, would see that sustenance realised in a particular way in the Eucharist. That is the daily food that sustains many of us for service. But not everyone.

Musician and producer Tricky has hit an industry home-run by luring music mogul Chris Blackwell to his new record label.

Blackwell founded the influential Island Records, which introduced Bob Marley and U2 to the world and signed some of the planet’s biggest artists including Cat Stevens, Melissa Ethridge, PJ Harvey and Tom Waits.

An eminent pioneer of trip hop, Tricky, born Adrian Thaws, rapped on and was a producer for the landmark British album Blue Lines, by Massive Attack. He went on to record solo albums and has worked on collaborations with Bjork, Live and Tool.

Famously disdainful of the music industry, Tricky recently announced he was launching Brown Punk to give artists a label that wasn’t focused on manufacturing money-making pop hits.

I have purchased the GospelKeys 101. This video has inspired me to want to learn more about playing the piano. The lessons are very easy to follow and I was able to learn full length songs in one day. I am a beginner and never really understood musical note reading.
