Oil Prices Fall And The Nigerian Economy

The Current Reality

Sequel to the stock market crash of 2008, oil prices fall has come to take its toll on major oil dependent economies of the world and Nigeria as an oil dependent monocultural economy has been yet again badly affected by this. While crude oil earnings account for 95 percent of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings, it should be recalled that Nigeria first suffered from oil prices fall in 1978. General Olusegun Obasanjo was Nigeria’s Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces as at that time (1978). The oil prices fall then led to a situation where Nigeria had to borrow from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to finance her budget owing to the fact that the expected revenue from which the budget was to be financed dropped heavily as a result of oil prices decline, as such, the budget had to be financed through borrowing.

Apart from the interest the nation had to pay while servicing the debt, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mandated the country to devalue her currency. As a result of meeting the devaluation condition, the Nigerian currency which stood at 80 kobo to $1 was devalued and the US dollar strengthened against the Naira. That heralded the era of currency devaluation in Nigeria.

Such situation has reoccurred and one can only be left baffled as to why Nigeria still remains a monocultural economy till date. Most of the countries that were affected by the 1978 oil prices fall in the international market had guarded against the likely effects oil prices fall on their economies by opening up other leading sectors. Oil that used to be sold at $109.63 per barrel is now being sold at below $70 per barrel and this development is adversely affecting Nigeria’s economy.

One of the effects of the oil prices drop on Nigeria’s economy is reflected in the recent devaluation of Naira. Prior to the oil prices fall in the international market, $1 exchanged for N160 but in an attempt by Nigeria’s policy makers to adjust in line with the oil prices fall, the Naira was devalued to around N200 for $1 and as a result of the devaluation, general price level of goods and services have increased in Nigeria.

Another effect that the oil prices decline is likely to have on Nigeria’s economy is the erosion of the excess crude oil account. The 2015 budget of Nigeria is set at a benchmarked oil price of $65 per barrel and if oil prices drop below that value, the excess crude oil account will no longer be in existence.

The Way Forward

In spite of all the aforementioned effects of the declining oil prices, Nigeria can forestall all effects associated with further oil prices decline by opening up more leading sectors. The President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan led administration should ensure his transformation agenda covers all the economic sectors of Nigeria. If this is achieved, Nigeria will have a balanced polycultural economy, hence, Nigeria’s economy will be able to absorb associated with fluctuations in the level of economic variable(s) in her sectors.

• The suspected reservoirs for Ebola are fruit bats
• Transmission to humans is thought to originate from infected bats or primates that have become infected by bats.
• Undercooked infected bat and primate (bush) meat transmits the virus to humans.
• Human to human transmission is only achieved by physical contact with a person who is acutely and gravely ill from the Ebola Virus or their body fluids.
• Transmission among humans is almost exclusively among caregiver family members or health care workers tending to the very ill.

• The virus is easily killed by contact with soap, bleach, sunlight or drying. A washing machine will kill the virus in clothing saturated with infected body fluids.
• A person can incubate the virus without symptoms for 2-21 days, the average being 5-8 days before becoming ill. THEY ARE NOT CONTAGIOUS until they are acutely ill.
• Only when ill does the viral load express itself first in the blood and then in other bodily fluids (to include vomit, faeces, urine, bosom milk, Fluid and sweat).
• If you are walking around you are not infectious to others.
• There are documented cases from Kikwit, DRC of an Ebola outbreak in a village that had the custom of children never touching an ill adult. Children living for days in small one room huts with parents who died from Ebola did not become infected.
• You cannot contract Ebola by handling money, buying local bread or swimming in a pool

Problem:
Each time you start your Windows 8 Computer (PC), it freezes, hangs, and temporarily crashes, and disk usage meter from the task manager rises to 100% quickly

Solution 1:
Increase virtual memory.
Make it equivalent to your RAM size for the initial size and twice of the initial size in maximum size and make sure you have the same amount of free space in your hard drive in each drive.

To do this, follow the following steps:

1. Go to Control Panel> All control panel items > System
2. Click on Advanced system settings
3. Under Performance, click on settings

4. Go to Advanced tab
5. Under Virtual memory, click on Change

6. UN-check "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" check box
7. Select your windows drive (where OS is installed)
8. Click on Custom size radio button
9. Set Initial size equivalent to your RAM size in MB

10. Set Maximum size to twice of your RAM size in MB
11. Click on Set
12. Click on OK thrice
13. Restart your system

My Observation:

Disk usage in Task manager still reads 100 sometimes but the PC is super fast now.

I started photography 2011. I went for a training. I have been working with a camera since 2009, not for covering events but for the fun of it and also for taking passports. I eventually went for training 2011. I was learning and going to school at the same time, it was stressful and challenging and I was focused because good things don't come easy.

All you need do is go to the youtube page you desire, e.g: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPyUwpfTf-U then add "ss" without the quotes before the letter "y" in youtube and click the Enter button on your keyboard or Go on your browser. e.g: https://www.ssyoutube.com/watch?v=lPyUwpfTf-U

This will take you to a site, savefrom.net with your youtube link already wrapped around the url and your youtube video is presented with a download link in several formats, All you have to do is to select your desired format from the ones listed. The formats includes: FLV, MP4, 3GP etc. Once you select a format, the download begins.

Also here is something I usually do when I have a lot of data on my phone's hotspot connection with my pc, I select a particular youtube user with lots of relevant videos and I open up his/her youtube profile, then add "ss" to the "y" and click Enter on my keyboard e.g: http://www.ssyoutube.com/user/flashbuilding/featured. It will open up in savefrom.net and pull all the user's video out with an option to download each one. Very amazing.

Note: If you encounter a "site not trusted message" when you add the "ss" to youtube, simply proceed anyway. Reason you may encounter this warning message is because youtube is a https site, and will always priotize security over everything.

A Chat with Kpemi Momodu, on How to Excel Academically

Can we meet you sir?

My name is Kpemi (short for Makpeminoghena) Momodu. I hail from Etsako West LGA of Edo State, from a family of 6. The third child of 4 vibrant boys. A graduate of Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the University of Benin and a Chess and Scrabble aficionado.
That's pretty much me.

We gathered you graduated with a first class degree and the overall best student in your department while in the university, how did you manage that?

Hmmm... How did I manage that? It was not a walk in the park, neither was it that complex. It was a combination of some basic principles and grace of God that brought and saw me through.

I learnt early my 'formula' which 'we' call PIN code quite early. I learnt how I learn best. I learnt when I assimilated best. Basically, I just knew me then I adapted myself and my strategy daily, weekly and so on to achieve best results in everything I do. Sincerely, I didn't learn this when I was in school (UNIBEN). I learnt this far before UNIBEN and this aided me in my studies in school. I knew what time my brain shuts down for the day, I knew when it came up, ready to receive data.

I understood the importance of foundational knowledge. A house is as good as its foundation. A faulty foundation leads to cracks in a building and eventually its destruction. However, unlike a building that has to be brought down to totally to fix or repair its foundation, knowledge foundation can be rebuilt when an issue is noted with the foundation. I was well grounded in my science subjects and this enabled my build castles on these foundational knowledge along the way. It was pretty easy to build on it as the foundation was well built.

Also, I walked with the best. Trust me, when a chicken moves with eagles, it definitely without any doubt would fly like an eagle one day. Friends in my immediate circle were the best of the best and geekiest of the geekiest. Some may not find these people cool to move with but I was the kind of person that enjoyed their presence. Every conversation with them left me better than I was before the conversation. Names that unconsciously come to mind here are Onotie Omoifo and Samuel Ezebunandu. They were and are good. They were my immediate clique. I learnt a lot from them.

Truth be told all my efforts and principles, no matter how well applied, would have been nought without the grace of God. He was close to me and kept me before I found Him and He still keeps me close to Him till this day. He made me understand that the race is not to the swift nor battle to the strong... Eccl 9:11 and It is not of him that willeth nor of him that runneth but God that showeth mercy... Rom 9:16.

What were your best moments in the university?

My best moment was when I was at my spot reading I think. There were kind of no social moments in school but now i think that was too extreme (do i really think that?).

What were your worst moments?

My worst moment was a day when Dr. Anyaeji (actually a professor to many of us) asked that I explain a concept he had spent the last hour explaining to the class. A friend Eroms had asked for clarification. I flopped (lol). Eventually, Samuel explained the concept and I never forgot the concept till this day.

What studying techniques did you employ that led to this great success?

I read daily during the days I was in school (Sunday - Friday) . I went home a lot (every Friday I must confess) and couldn't read at home, so I had to make good use of the days/nights I was in school. Please note that there is no hard and fast rule. What may work for me may not work for you. This is why knowing yourself is very important. Then you can channel your energy, increase efficiency and get good results.

I understood that it isn't the number of hours you put into reading that mattered. It is the efficiency with which you operate that mattered. I could read for 3 hours which may translate to 2 effective hours and some other person may read for 5 hours and get 2 effective hours. So it all boils down to knowing yourself, channelling your energy and increasing your efficiency.

Also, do not just read your 8 or 9 courses of a semester and forget about the world. Know what goes on around you especially on a global scale. Abraham Lincoln said in his letter to his son's teacher, "...Teach him if you can the wonders of books, but also give time to ponder the extreme mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun and flowers on a green hill."

What is your advice for a student who is struggling in his studies academically?

My advice to that person would be to understand themselves, channel their energy and seek ways to improve their efficiency. This could require going back to read some basic concepts. A professor of Electrical/Electronic engineering (EEE) rightly said that all you need to know in EEE is Ohm's Law, Kirchoff's Voltage Law (KVL) and Kirchoff's current Law (KCL) and you are good to go. The wisdom there is that this basic laws are what the rest of EEE is built upon.

Finally how has life after school been including successes you have enjoyed since your graduation?

Life after school has been nice in general.

ASUP Strike - Federal Poly Oko Pulls out of 11 months Strike

News reaching me first hand has it that Federal polytechnic Oko has pulled out of the on-going 11 months strike by the Nigerian ASUP following an emergency meeting held by the academic board of the school.

This is to enable the students write their first semester exams, while the resumption date for the second semester will soon be announced.

It was also gathered that the Rector of Federal Poly Oko, Professor Godwin Onu, yesterday pleaded with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics to call off the strike.

5 Ways a student can improve CGPA this Next Semester

You know that feeling of frustration you feel when you have read, studied, spent countless hours staying awake to understand that particular course only to look at your result on the notice board at the end of the semester, and it is below average.

After I successfully graduated in 2010 with a First class result, I sat down to write down the steps i took along the way to success. Being a great student in high school doesn't culminate into success in the higher institutions. I made this assumption too but you see, it's a different ball game here.

After enduring 2 years of average results, I eventually stumbled on 5 principles that I rode on till I graduated. These principles were encountered during my prayer and meditation session in my 3rd/4th year in school, however they are general and potent principles that will improve your CGPA this next semester. I have re-written them to better suit every student out there.

1. Love difficult Courses: I have come to understand that nothing really is difficult. Your difficulty is someone else's simplicity. As difficult as ball juggling seems, there are people who excel at it. It takes consistent practice to simplify a difficult task. In the school setting, students are prone to suspend the difficult courses till the exam period approaches, while focusing on the seemingly easy ones. But in real practice, the more you spend time with the difficult courses, the better you will become at them.

2. See yourself as the best in the class: This works like magic. Here is the mentality of average students; they tell themselves they are not the best, they can never compete with the best and as such the brain responds by producing an average understanding for them. The more you see yourself as the best, the more you will naturally be driven to work harder than usual. You were not born dull, no one was. We are products of our levels of exposure to knowledge.

3. Target the High Grades: I sat for an exam in school and all I wanted to score was just a C grade. I was not thoroughly prepared, and I had more than 3 days to prepare thoroughly, but I was not prepared to stress myself further, so I aimed for a C, and studied to match. Unfortunately, I had a D. A lot of students now are like this. They just want to pass and avoid failure so they study few stuff that will get them across to the next level only to be disappointed. If you aim for an A, no matter how difficult the course or the exam will be, you will not fall below a B or C. Just like the saying, "If you aim for the heavens, you may miss but you won't miss landing on the skies"

4. Stop baby sitting your brain: Sound funny right?, Yea it isn't because that is basically what most average students do without knowing. You see, no one ever tells the stomach how to digest food, no one tells the anus what colour of faeces to produce, so stop controlling your brain on how to understand. Your duty is just to study, let the brain do the rest. When you begin to reduce your studying due to the fear of having a brain disorder, you are missing it. Good exposure to knowledge does not lead to brain disorder.

5. Set Questions for yourself: In our Nigerian education system, our lecturers and teachers are rather too busy pursuing other stuff than to have time to set fresh exam questions. Most will rather set questions from their lecture materials, others from past questions or a combination of both. So if you can do that for yourself for every course and answer them before the exam, you stand a great chance to scale the exam hurdle

6. ***Bonus - Be spiritual: This led to the discovery of the 5 principles above. The closer you are to God, the more you will have access to some divine realm of knowledge. Psalms 25:12,14

I have been invited by schools, churches and fellowship bodies to teach these principles to their students, and the results have been amazing. You too by reading through this post will perform amazingly this next semester if you follow the steps properly.

5. You don’t have to make up an excuse when you’re late to class. For that matter, you don’t ever have to worry about being late, as you take online classes on your own schedule.
