Listening to a tourism webinar online, I realized the DESPERATION from those of the travel and industry.

First off, I admire how professionals are trying to answer all questions and unease about the future of the industries despite some asking questions beyond marketing.

Everyone seems to be gearing up for the easing of the quarantine but don’t realize that it also opens risk for a second wave of the pandemic that they say could be worse.

Second, it’s a sad state we are in now but the reality is that it’s not just the tourism industry that will be going through what they call the “NEW NORMAL“.

With that, there are some possible digital pivots or solutions that companies or businesses can use.

In fact, some of the above segments have already demonstrated that it can actually be done. All it takes is the courage and the focus to find out the low hanging fruits and opportunities that can be executed within capabilities.

It’s similar to running a sprint in Scrum where you find out the goal and create a potentially shippable upgrade to your business plans that adjusts to these new normals.

To be fair, there’s nothing normal about what is happening now and we all wish we’ll be back to what it was soon.

Until then, we’ll have to find ways. And find it FAST.

4. 69% of Filipino internet users use a subscription service to watch TV content.
5. 76% of Filipino internet users buy something online per month.

Last June 14, 2019, I was invited as a plenary speaker by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce during the Cebu Entrepreneurs’ Summit to share my thoughts on recent innovations in the field of digital marketing.

It was a great sharing experience for me and a chance to update my knowledge of the industry. So I am also excited to share with you the presentation file that I used during the event at the end of this post.

I am publishing it here as a way of knowledge sharing and discussion since the way we conduct business in Cebu (or in the Philippines) is quite different from other cities and countries.

The innovations I mentioned here may not be new to some who are deep into the industry and digital marketing but the reality of our MSMEs in Cebu is different.

Before my scheduled presentation, I have sent out a survey asking the following questions to some of the business owners in my network. These were the questions:

1. What are your current digital marketing strategies used for your business? Which ones are working for you?
2. What are your challenges with those?
3. Which digital marketing innovation do you want to learn more about?

Based on the responses of the business owners I’ve talked to, there is still a lot for us to learn even with just the basics of getting started. The common thread among the responses I received was the following:

• They are still exploring social media channels specifically Facebook and Instagram.
• They want to understand how best to create the messaging that drives engagement.
• They need to know how to make consistent efforts with what they started
• They want to learn how to optimize the use of the channels they are on.

All these are concerns of the MSMEs which are not the same as big advertisers and spenders. Of course, for big brands like Shopee or Jollibee or Samsung, it can be a whole integrated marketing approach along with investments in video ads, search, and other platform.

For the innovations, I have picked five that have interesting examples and of which can be explored by MSMEs to see if they can use the information about these trends to use for their campaigns.

I got a deeper understanding of digital marketing only during my advertising class, one of the majors I had to take as a Mass Communication student. It was never completely about digital marketing agency.

Through this company, I truly got a first-hand experience on what it would be like to be working under digital marketing, which is definitely not a walk in the park after all.

It may have seemed easy with a mindset to just be curating content for the posts of accounts or pages you handle but time will come that you will run out of words or content to write about, and your brain would just shut off and stop cooperating with you, which would not be one of the best feelings in the world, especially when you have deadlines to catch up on.

It is not possible to be working on everything on your own, for there will always be a team that would have your back. Not just in technical terms, but through this company, I have also seen how each of them really treat each other as family.

The company ensures that you are not left behind or left alone and makes sure that you are taught well about the tasks you have to undergo. Not only will they give you a briefing, the employees working in the company are approachable if ever you are unsure of what you are doing or about to do.

Since I am a Mass Communication student with very limited knowledge on digital marketing, I am highly appreciative of the company’s helpful and accommodating employees that made sure to help me adjust into the agency by giving me tips and techniques that I know will only help me improve.

After three (3) grueling weeks of job searching, twenty-eight (28) companies visited and three (3) interviews… I... John Romeo R. Ursal, a Marketing student of the University of San Carlos, have finally found a company that I can do my internship on, Third Team Media Business Solutions.

The place that I work was all about digital marketing, in which a type of marketing that was not fully discussed right be one of my University’s professors, or had no idea about it…  but I proceeded without delay. Since it stated digital, so I thought it would involve the use of computers while doing marketing, in which it is an ace for me since I am a techie and a marketing student, it would be a bit easy for me. But alas…. It was not.

Here are my reasons as to WHY should YOU do your internship HERE in this company:
1. Everyone is friendly and we all work as a team!
When working from a company there will always be internal competitions, these individuals work as your Barkada to help you finish your tasks if need in help.
2. You will be taught everything about the Industry.
The type of industry work is kind of new since it is not widely taught at my University, considering that it was only one subject, and the CEO, Ms. Fleire Castro, will brief you as to how things play.
3.Will teach you on how to make content
I usually have a hard time making my own original content since almost all of my Ideas came from different experiences that influence me. So, they give my tips and techniques on how to make my own content and it was worthwhile, too!
4.Teach you how to use Photoshop
As for me I already know how to do Photoshop before I entered the company. But there were still some parts that I still did not know and it has been two (2) years since I last used the program so I was a bit rusty, but eventually, my proficiency of using photoshop has increased.
5. You can eat snacks in the office as you work! YAHOOOOOO!!!!!.
You can eat snacks in the office since it can help you think well and will have an increased chance to enhance or make new ideas while you work. When you have a lot of pending task and you want to eat, one of the team members may go out to buy their own snack and you can ask to buy snacks, too!

6. Immersions!
At first I was like: Immersion??? Unsa na (What’s that)? It actually meant company visits. Visiting the company’s clients to know more about their products and plan on how to advertise them. Also to get some stock photos for poster. If you get lucky you might get a freebie!

7. Blogging
It’s a first for me since I’m an introvert type of person. Visiting from different places to get the idea of an event and make an article about my experience, and it was a BLAST!!! Here is an article I made of said event: goo.gl/Xfgnzc . Also enjoyed some free food at the event, hehehe.

8. Allowances!!! YAY!!!
Yes, you read this right, you will have an allowance when you work at the company. Most company sadly, from what I heard from my friends, don’t give you allowance for your effort.
9. Lot’s of laughs!
When we get bored in the office we talk, play music, or share something funny to keep us alive and so that we won’t get sleepy! Or we will get trouble by Miss Fleire.

10. And a team that treats you are important and part of the family.
When you have problems that be afraid to ask for help since they will help you since we are a team. The Third Team Family.
