Valentine's Day is around the corner once again and flowers are always a fail safe gift. My husband, Felix, was not very creative with his gift giving. His idea of a gift was giving something he liked. He was sure that if he liked something, others would like them too. Felix loved red roses and so he gave them to the people he loved. Just before Valentine's Day, he would order a box of two dozen red roses one each for me, our two daughters Emilie and Melissa, his mom and my sister-in-law, Cathy. Sometimes, he added a box of chocolates or a trinket or a card, but we knew we would always got red roses. He did it year after year except when he got too sick to do it.

Felix passed away a few months ago . We will not get red roses for Valentine's Day this year. Instead, on Valentine's Day, we will bring him red roses and we will remember just as he always did.

Summertime is outdoors time. Whether you are sun tanning in the back porch, going to the beach, hiking or just taking a walk, don't forget the sun glasses. The eyes are just as vulnerable to the effects of the sun's rays as the skin.

Sun radiation comes in the form of ultraviolet rays and high energy visible rays. The ozone layer filters most of these radiations but enough do escape into the earth to cause damage to the skin and eyes.

There are three types of ultraviolet rays (UV) all of which have the potential to cause skin and eye damage.

Ultraviolet A is a low energy radiation which can penetrate the cornea and reach the retina. Long term UVA exposure can cause cataracts and sometimes, macular degeneration, a disorder of the retina.
Ultraviolet B (UVB) has a longer wave length. Although filtered by the ozone layer, enough radiation reach the earth to cause eye damage. UVB can burn the cornea, a condition known as photokeratitis. Snow blindness is an example of photokeratitis and is a risk especially in high altitude.
Ultraviolet C (UVC) has the longest wave length and the greatest potential to cause UV damage. Fortunately, the ozone layer blocks this effectively and little escapes into the earth surface.

High energy visible radiation (HEV) or blue light is another type of sun radiation. It has the potential to damage the retina on prolonged exposure.

The eyes can be protected from harmful solar exposure by:

wearing a wide brimmed hat.
wearing sun glasses that block UV and HEV rays 100 percent
limiting sun exposure

Remember, children and infants have delicate eyes and should have sun protection. They, too, need sun glasses that block sun rays 100 percent.

I admit. I am one of those 6.5 million YouTube page viewers who watched Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz wedding video. I watched it not once, not twice but over and over. I watched it on YouTube, The Today Show, and the evening news. I watched the wedding party dance on the Saturday Today Show. And I'll probably watch it again. I can't help it. The joy is contagious.

On June 20, 2009, Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz went up the wedding aisle, not to the tune of Here Comes the Bride or Cannon in D but to the music of Forever by Chris Brown. But march they did not. Instead, the wedding party danced and boogied and somersaulted up to the altar, ushers, groomsmen, bridesmaids and of course, groom and bride. What a delight to watch, this couple who dared to be different and shared their joy with their guests and inadvertently the world wide web. I smiled, I laughed and I rocked.

It was so timely in a period of angst over the economy, lost jobs, wars and the passing of beloved icons. For a brief moment, the Heinz' allowed us to smile, laugh and feel the love of life and of each other that this couple shared. If this is a foreshadowing of their life together, it will be one of great fun and adventure. And thank you, Jill and Kevin, for allowing us this glimpse of fun and hope.

Avid google users and computer programmers will mourn the passing of Rajeev Motwani, mentor of Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Indian born and educated, Rajeev Motwani taught computer science at Stanford University. Computer scientists praise his untiring mentorship of young scientists and support of start-up computer science ventures.

Rajeev Motwani wrote texbooks and co-authored Randomized Algorithms, and pioneered various research projects at Stanford University. He was the recipient of the Arthur Sloan Fellowship, Okawa Foundation Research Award and the Godel Prize.

Just southeast of Kansas City, Missouri is a very well kept secret, Powell Gardens, a 915 acre garden. It boasts of four different gardens, a chapel and and event rental spaces.

The Fountain Garden surrounds a fountain water feature where children can play. Flowers in colorful kaleidoscope abound. Many are indigenous to the area. Many are blooms you see in floral arrangement catalogs like 1800flowers.
Then there is the Byron Schutz Nature Trail, a 3.25 acre walking path amidst trees, prairie grasses and different species of plants around the world able to withstand midwest weather. Birds and butterflies accompany you on the trail.
The Kauffman Legacy Garden is a two acre garden in the middle of Kansas City built in memory of Muriel and Ewing Kauffman, beloved Kansas City philantropists. It is tended by staff from Powell Gardens. There is a meandering brick path, pavillions to relax and rest and water accents.
The Heartland Harvest Garden is a feast for the casual and the serious vegetable gardener at heart.
