Four Northeast Ohio artists selected to participate in an experimental art
laboratory at SPACES

Cleveland, OH, July 6, 2009- Northeast Ohio artists Elizabeth Emery, Elaine
Hullihen, Robin Latkovich and Mark Moskovitz have been selected to
participate in the newly revised and updated version of SPACELab at SPACES.
Each of the artists was selected based on past work and his/her willingness
to experiment more in their individual practices. The artists will present
their work during the first half of 2009-10 exhibition season; beginning
September 11, 2009.

SPACELab is a laboratory created to help artists push and pull a concept
until it materializes. By providing resources and instruction SPACELab not
only acts as a venue for the display of process and projects but plays an
active role in the conceptualization of art. The elements of the SPACELab
program are designed to allow for the development of truly experimental
projects.

In 1994, SPACELab was added to SPACES’ programming as an experimental
project venue where artists were encouraged to create their first piece of
installation art or try a new direction. Since SPACELab’s inception, 187
artists from 19 US states and 6 countries have participated. Starting with
the 2009-10 season, changes are being made to better support the artists and
evolve the program. Each artist accepted to the SPACELab program will
participate in a workshop that encourages the artists to step outside of
practices they may find comfortable, well-worn and even lucrative in order
to look at, think about and make art differently. From the workshop, a solo
exhibition will grow where the artists will put into practice the things
discussed in the workshop. This is an opportunity for younger, emerging
artists to stretch their concepts and skills, or for more established
artists to reexamine their practices and find new wellsprings and
directions.

After the workshop, the artists will be able to use SPACES and its
connections as allies to help realize their work. The extensive commitment
limits this program to artists living in the 14 counties of the NE Ohio
region: Ashtabula, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Holmes, Lake, Lorain,
Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Trumbull and Wayne.

SPACELab Manager Susan Vincent, who will act as a sounding board and
facilitator for the artists, says, “SPACELab should be thought of as a
mini-residency. The artist receives a support network to assist them while
they create a new body of work. Through SPACELab, artists get the time,
resources and guidance from an organization deeply rooted in
experimentation.”

Since each artist will be challenging their current practices, they will
produce new work based upon their experiences with the SPACELab workshop.
The resulting practices and pieces will be markedly different from what they
have previously produced.

Elizabeth Emery (Cleveland Heights, OH) received her MFA in 2008 from the
School of Art and Design at Alfred University in New York state. She creates
ceramic-based mixed-media sculptures and coordinates collaborative community
projects. The artist utilizes the interplay between texture and color in her
sculpture to examine the complexities of the human condition.

As a 2007 graduate from Kent State University, Elaine Hullihen (Kent, OH)
draws from her studies of sculpture and scenic painting for theatre to
create work that utilizes both performance and structural elements. The
artist manipulates familiar objects and materials and then presents them
outside of their normal function to demonstrate shifts in meaning through
altered contexts.

As a life-long Clevelander, Robin Latkovich’s (Cleveland Heights) paintings
reflect the colors and forms often found in his own local landscape.
Primarily working in oil, Latkovich uses the landscape to explore themes of
sensation, imagination, and non-ordinary experience. Abstract shapes are
inserted into a recognizable, representational image in order to give form
to an unspoken mythology that lurks behind feelings of awe, horror and
beauty. Latkovitch received a BA in studio art from Hiram College in 2005.

Mark Moskovitz began his academic career as a student at the University of
New Hampshire. There, he earned a dual BS in English and Environmental
Science. Before earning his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2005,
Moskovitz did stints in television as a writer and producer and later as a
carpenter and cabinet maker. The objects Moskovitz constructs hover between
art piece and design. By creating work that cannot easily be categorized,
Moskovitz allows the viewer “to process what he/she thinks through
‘home-made filters.’”

After the most recent round of self-evaluations and conversations with a
committee of local artists and administrators about SPACES’ role in
supporting the artist (historically and presently), the organization is
eager to work at greater length and depth with artists in their own
backyard. Eight Northeast Ohio will present new work throughout the
exhibition season.

Artists over the age of 21 (emerging and established), currently living in
Northeast Ohio, should consider applying by the next deadline: September 18,

Bravo has everyone attending the casting call fill out a very detailed application that too well over an hour to fill out.  Both of the artists had to go back and prepare both a printed portfolio with over 12 samples of their work showcasing as diverse a style as possible.   They also must provide a digital portfolio that will be left with the casting team for future consideration.  Some of the digital selections are shown below:

When we arrived in downtown tonight, it was amazing the amount of activity and cultural performances that were going on.  We visited Millennium Park and heard an orchestral concert that was attended by several thousand people, and had dinner at a side walk cafe.

During our visit we saw AT&T’s Cloud Plaza with an very cool sculpture that provided great photographs of the skyline of Chicago.  Check out a sample of our photographs from the evening.

It’s summer time and Sparx in the City Concerts have returned to the Galleria on Fridays during lunch time.

I was able to catch yesterday’s concert and was pleasantly surprised to hear The North Coast Jazz Collective. This jazz quartet offers a mix of well know jazz tunes with a mix of original material from within it’s own ranks.

The quartet is made up of: Mark Grey on drums, John Gallo on acoustic
bass, Dave Frank on tenor sax, soprano sax and flute, and Dan Maier on piano. Mark Grey serves as the band leader for the group. For booking

Beth and Roger Miller are pleased to announce that the Waterloo 7 Studio & Gallery will be hosting the next Art Exchange.  The goal is to gather 100 pieces of original art work for our first large venue art exchange!

For those of you who have not yet attended, it works like this; bring an original piece of artwork of your own creation following the theme “Flower(s)”.   (YES, THIS THEME IS FLOWERS- and we fully expect artists to embrace this theme with enthusiasm and creativity, with recognition for the most unique work!)  Each piece of art should be covered or wrapped in some way, so that whomever is choosing it cannot tell what it is.  Each artist who brings work will get the opportunity to choose a covered piece of original artwork to unwrap in front of the group and take home.  New artists are encouraged to participate.  However, if you would prefer to just experience the event, please come and meet some of Cleveland’s top artists, movie makers, special effects artists, photographers and writers.

This gathering is open, so bring friends and artwork.

ARTS PROJECT TO BENEFIT LOCAL CHARITIES

Many More Autographs Guitars for Art Project

CLEVELAND, OH&MDASH;AUGUST 26, 2009&MDASH;CLEVELAND ROCKS!, presented
by Gibson and Epiphone Guitar has announced the names of the first
tier of 25 visual artists selected to take part in the public arts
project to benefit local charities. Each artist selected will be given
the opportunity to paint one of the playable Epiphone guitars which
will later be displayed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum
and have the chance to be paired with one of the many legendary
musicians who have also lent their support. These guitars, once
completed, will be part of the first installment of guitars that will
be exhibited at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and
auctioned off in a gala event to benefit local non-profits. In
response to continued interest from the local arts community,
Cleveland Rocks! will continue to accept artwork applications to be
considered for the project through MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH.  Details
are below.

A host of popular bands and legendary musicians had supported the
Cleveland Rocks! project by signing one of the guitars to be used in
the project. From legendary Lynryrd Skynrd to hot new act Lil Wayne,
these autographs will remain prominent within the designs developed by
the visual artists on the final art piece.  Other supporters include
Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, American Idols, Sugar Ray, Ryan Cabrera,
and bands from the Warped Tour.  There are a host of others which will
be added to the project throughout September.

tier of visual artists that will be selected for the program. Artwork
selected for the second tier of the program will also be exhibited at
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in the fall of 2009. Visual

designs which will be part of the exciting exhibit and notify each

the Cleveland Rocks! catalog, invitation to the star-studded Cleveland
Rocks! gala auction event and eligibility to be featured in large
scale publicity campaigns.

Cleveland Rocks! is a community arts project that celebrates the
unique artistic excellence and diversity of the city of Cleveland
supported by Epiphone Guitar and parent company GIBSON GUITAR.
Featuring Epiphone Les Paul guitars that are to be artistically
designed by Ohio based visual artists and celebrities, this project
will serve as an artistic reminder and display of Cleveland’s lush
musical heritage and unwavering commitment to music that Rocks!
Cleveland is the home of rock-n-roll, given the distinction of being
the city which originally coined the phrase by Alan Freed. Once
completed, the guitars will be exclusively exhibited at the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and subsequently auctioned off to raise
funds for three local non-profit organizations: the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame and Museum, the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, and The
Cleveland Music School Settlement.

A gala auction event conducted by world-renowned Julien’s Auctions
will be held at the conclusion of the exhibit with all proceeds
benefitting the non-profits. The project is administered through the
