This pattern makes a large square so it can be used by itself as a wall hanging, a pillow or sewn together to make a clover blanket! It is the perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Clover / Shamrock Square Pattern

To be able to crochet this square, you will need to know how to crochet a few basic crochet stitches, read a chart image, have some knowledge of tapestry crochet, as well as have a few crocheting materials on hand.

Don’t worry, though. I’ll go over each of these below in detail, so you’ll hopefully have no problems crocheting this square.

Tip: You can use both the chart and written pattern instructions to make this square, or each on their own. It is up to you.

Crochet Stitches

I decided to use the half double crochet (hdc) stitch for this square instead of the single crochet (sc) stitch that I usually use with crochet chart images. I wanted to make sure it crocheted up quickly because crochet projects that take forever are not my cup of tea.

About Tapestry Crochet

Tapestry crochet is very similar to like you normally would crochet but involves color work. You will change the yarn color a lot to create the desired image, which in this case is a clover.

To change colors in tapestry crochet, crochet the half double crochet as usual, but before the last yarn over, switch the yarn to the new color and drop the old one.

How To Read A Crochet Chart

If you decide to use the chart to make this square, the chart shows individual squares, which you will read as half double crochets. You will switch the yarn color where you see a color change on the chart.

I suggest using a marker, pen, or pencil to mark off each square as you are crocheting these squares, so you’ll never lose your place or stitch count. Below, you can print off the chart for the clover so you can keep your place when crocheting.

Written instructions

You can also use written instruction too with tapestry crochet, along with the chart mentioned above. They are just like a normal pattern and tell you how many colors to crochet in a row, usually shown as an X (times).

So, you may see, for example, (White) x 12 which means you would crochet 12 single crochets with the White yarn. I prefer this method of following along with tapestry crochet, but you may enjoy using the color work chart instead.

Materials Needed

I used Lionbrand Heartland in Chanel Islands and Acadia to create my clover design, which is a lighter green, but you could use a darker one if you prefer! You will also need less than a skein of each. If you prefer to use a different four weight yarn, that is totally ok too!

You will also need a 5.5 mm size crochet hook, stitch markers (to keep your place) and scissors for cutting yarn.

Wrong Side Vs Right Side

Learning how to manage your yarn can be a challenge when you’re doing color work if you aren’t sure where to put your yarn. But no worries, I can help explain wrong side vs right side in crochet!

When starting a row on the wrong side (WS), keep the second yarn in front of your work. On the other hand, on the right side (RS), keep the second yarn behind your work.

Remember, odd-numbered rows are the RS, and even-numbered rows are the WS.

Tips for Crocheting These Clover Squares

By understanding these, you’ll be all set to create a beautiful crochet clover!

1. Start Each Row Right: Begin every row with a chain 1, and turn your work at the end to start on the opposite side.
2. Count Your Stitches: For these square patterns, aim for 50 half double crochets in each row. Start with a foundation chain of 51, then begin your first row in the second chain from the hook to achieve 50 stitches.
3. Tight Tension is Key: When crocheting these clovers, use two yarns simultaneously, crocheting one color over the other. It’s extremely important to maintain a tight tension; otherwise, the alternate color might peek through the stitches. It’s ok if it shows a bit, but we don’t want it sticking out completely!
4. Color Changes: Follow the chart closely for when to switch colors, so the clover looks like a clover when you are done!
5. Blocking: You will also need to know how to block your square if you’d like it to lay nicely. Blocking isn’t necessary for this square, but it does make it look nice!

Finishing

The next step is to fasten off the yarn from the last row, cut it, and weave in all the ends with a yarn needle.

Optional Border

1. Instead of fastening off your yarn after the last row in the corner sc, ch 2, sc.
2. continue down the side of the square, single crocheting evenly for each row.
3. At each corner make sure to sc, ch 2, sc.
4. After you complete all four corners and sides, fasten off your yarn and weave in all the loose ends throughout the square.

Half Double Crochet: My go to is always a half double crochet or hdc abbreviated. Yes, this is a basic stitch, but it’s still my favorite one of them all! So, if you see this stitch used in a pattern, then definitely don’t rule it out. It works up quickly, is easy to make, and perfect for beginner crocheters to use.

Cluster Stitch: The cluster stitch is worked with double crochets and creates a great granny stitch look that is perfect or all types of projects. I love using this stitch in blankets because it makes them cozy and thick, which is perfect for cuddling.

Primrose Stitch: The primrose stitch combines two different stitches together to create a beautiful stitch look. If you can single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet, you can easily make this stunning stitch!

Puff Stitch: The puff stitch… what can I say? It is so fun to create these puffy stitches in projects because of how they look. Plus, they are a great way to create a cozy blanket or project. The only negative about this stitch is that it uses a lot of yarn, but in my opinion, it is worth it.

Blanket Stitch: The blanket stitch is one of those stitch combos that are just simply stunning when worked up. Plus, it looks great crocheted in any yarn color, so whatever you want to make, this is a perfect stitch.

Lemon Peel Stitch: The lemon peel stitch is a perfect combination to make washcloths and dishcloths with, since it makes a sturdy fabric. It is just continuous rows of single crochet and double crochets one after another, so it’s super easy to crochet! Image courtesy of Persia Lou

V-Double Crochet Stitch: The v stitch in crochet is made up of double crochets and chains. They are worked in a way that creates a “V” in the project. It is a good stitch to use for throws to create a classic blanket. Image courtesy of Dream a Little Bigger

Star Stitch: The star stitch is one of those stitches that everyone has to try! It can be daunting to make, but the outcome is worth it! Here’s a quick guide about crochet supplies for beginners to get you started on your crochet adventure.

Must Have Crochet Supplies for Beginners

Below are some of the basic supplies every beginner crocheter needs before they learn how to crochet.

Crochet Hooks

First things first, you need a crochet hook. Crochet hooks come in various sizes, so starting with a medium size, like a 5 mm (H-8), is a good idea. This size is great for many beginner projects.

As you grow in your crochet journey, you can add more sizes to your collection. I recommend the Etimo hook set shown below. Since it is my absolute favorite crochet hook set… I have two!

Yarn

The yarn is your canvas when it comes to crocheting. For beginners, go for medium-weight yarn (also known as worsted weight). It’s easy to work with and perfect for a variety of projects. Select yarn colors that you love, as you’ll be spending a lot of time with them in your projects.

Vanna’s Choice, which is a four weight yarn (aka medium weight) is a good choice for newer crocheters because it’s easy to work with and easy to find in stores.

Scissors

A pair of sharp scissors is a must-have. You’ll use them to cut your yarn when you finish a project or change colors. My favorites are stork scissors, but any scissors that can cleanly cut yarn are fine.

Yarn Needle

A yarn needle, or tapestry needle, helps you weave in the ends of your yarn when your project is complete. They have a large eye, making it easier to thread yarn through.

Stitch Markers

Stitch markers are handy, especially for bigger projects. They help you follow where you are in your pattern. They come in various shapes and colors.

Measuring Tape

A flexible measuring tape is useful for checking the size of your projects. Whether it’s a hat, blanket, or scarf, you want to make sure it’s the right size. This will also be helpful when a pattern states a gauge, and you need to make sure your project swatch matches up.

Crochet Pattern

Lastly, you’ll need a pattern. There are loads of free patterns online that are geared towards beginners. Pick something simple to start, like a granny square, scarf, or a hat. As you gain confidence, you can try more complex patterns.

How To Make a Crochet Apple Square

Ready to crochet an apple square? You’ll just need a few basic stitches under your belt and some crochet essentials ready to go. Learn more about these supplies and stitches below!

Supplies

Yarn: This square is made with a six weight yarn (aka super bulky weight yarn) called Wool-Ease Thick & Quick by Lionbrand in Fisherman, Grass (stem) and Cranberry (the perfect apple yarn color in my opinion). If you’d like to use a different weight yarn, that would work as well, but keep in mind the finished square size will not be the same.

Crochet Hook: This square was worked up with an N-9 mm crochet hook. If you choose to use a different yarn weight, follow along with the recommended crochet hook size on the label of the yarn.

Scissors: We recommend a nice pair of stork scissors, but any pair of scissors will work for cutting yarn ends when needed.

Yarn Needle: It is a good idea to use a yarn needle (aka tapestry needle) to weave in yarn ends that have been cut. Learn how to weave in yarn ends, so you get a perfect crochet square every time!

Stitch Markers: Stitch markers are a good to use to mark the first stitch of each round. This way, you’ll be able to know where it starts and keep your stitch count correct as you work in the round.

Measuring Tape: Great for making sure the square turns out the size you intended.

Crochet Stitches

You will need to know a few basic crochet stitches to make the apple square crochet pattern as shown. First, you’ll need to know how to half double crochet, then double crochet, the chain stitch, the front post double crochet and finally the slip stitch.

1. Make a slip knot on the crochet hook.
2. Crochet a foundation chain (aka chain stitch) of any amount
3. Yarn over the hook, insert the hook from front to back of the second chain from the hook.
4. Yarn over the hook again and pull back through the stitch (aka pick up a loop)
5. Yarn over the hook and pull back through all three loops on the hook. This completes a half double crochet stitch!

Double Crochet (dc)

1. Yarn over (yo) the crochet hook, insert the crochet hook into the designated stitch.
2. Yo the crochet hook again, draw the yarn through the stitch, so there are 3 loops on the crochet hook
3. Yo the crochet hook again, draw through 2 loops, so there are 2 loops on the crochet hook.
4. Yo the crochet hook, draw through the final 2 loops.

Chain Stitch (ch)

A chain stitch is a simple crochet stitch that often serves as the foundation for other crochet stitches worked into a project.

1. Make a slip knot.
2. Yo (yarn over)
3. Draw a loop of yarn back through the loop on the crochet hook. You have completed your first chain stitch.
4. Yo and draw a loop through the loop on the crochet hook for each new chain stitch.

Slip Stitch (sl st)

1. Insert the crochet hook into the designated stitch
2. Yo (yarn over) and pull back through the stitch and through the loop on the crochet hook.

Front Post Double Crochet

1. Yo (yarn over)
2. From the front of your work, insert the hook front to back, to front again around the post of the next stitch, pushing the post forwards towards you.
3. Yo
4.  Pull the yarn back through the post, so there are three loops are on the hook.

The Crochet Apple Square Pattern

Use the free square pattern below to make an apple square design! This Fall square would look fabulous stitched together as an apple blanket, apple pillow, or more! It has a finished size of 8″ x 8″ inches when completed.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials Needed:

• Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick 3 colors (or any six weight yarn)
• Color A: Cranberry Color B: Grass Color C: Fisherman
• N crochet hook (9 mm)
• Yarn needle
• Scissors
• Stitch Markers (optional): These are used to mark the beginning st of the round
• Measuring Tape

Stitches Used:

• Double Crochet (dc)
• Chain (ch)
• Slip Stitch (sl st)
• Half Double Crochet (hdc)

Notes:

• This apple square pattern is written in US standard terms.
• The finished square size is 8 inches by 8 inches.
• You are welcome to change the colors throughout the apple, including the stem! Have fun with it.

The Pattern:

Round 1: With color A, Ch 4, sl st to the first ch to form a circle.

 

Round 2: Ch 2, 10 dcs into the circle, sl to the top of the first dc (not the ch 2). (10 sts)

 

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dcs into each dc around, sl to the first dc (not the ch 2). (20)

Round 4: Ch 2, 2 dcs into each dc around, sl to the first dc (not the ch 2). (40 sts)

Round 5: With color B, ch 1, 1 sc into each of the next 4 sts, hdc, *{1 dcs, ch 1, 1 dc} into the next st, hdc, 1 sc into each of the next 7 sts, hdc, *{1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc} into the next st, hdc,

1 sc into each of the 7 sts, hdc *{1 dcs, ch 1, 1 dcs} into the next st, hdc ,sc, sc, change to Color C (bringing Color B along the back of Color C as your work) {sc, fpdc}, {sc, fpdc}, {sc, fpdc} change to Color A, sc, sc, hdc *{1 dcs, ch 1, 1 dcs} into the next st, hdc, sc, sc sc, sl st to join to the first sc (not the ch 1). Round 6: ch 1, 1 sc into each of the next 5 sts, {hdc, ch 1, hdc} into the ch 1 space from the round before, 1 sc into each of the next 11 sts, {hdc, ch 1, hdc} into the ch 1 space from the round before, 1 sc into each of the next 11 sts, {hdc, ch 1, hdc} into the ch 1 space from the round before…

1 sc into each of the next 4 sts, sc through the bar of the color B from the row before, sc through the bar of Color B from the row before, sc through the bar of Color B from the row before, 1 sc into each of the next 4 sts, {hdc, ch 1, hdc} into the ch 1 space from the round before, 1 sc into each of the next 6 sts including the sl st from the round before. In this guide, we’ll explore the four main skill levels in crochet as defined by the Crafty Yarn Council and experts. Here at This is Crochet, this is how we define our crochet patterns by skill level, so learning these levels is key.

Crochet Project Skill Levels

Since the Crafty Yarn Council doesn’t clearly explain why each pattern is what level it is, I have broken the skill levels down a bit more to help make them more clear with stitch examples and project examples.

You will also notice stitch abbreviations in each section, which are important to learn when reading and making patterns.

Skill levels start at Basic, the simplest level. They then go up in difficulty, moving to Easy, followed by Intermediate, and finally reaching Complex.

Basic / Beginner Level

What to Expect: At the beginner level, you’ll mostly encounter basic stitches like the chain (ch), single crochet (sc), and double crochet (dc). The projects typically require one type of yarn and one size of crochet hook.

Stitches:

1. Chain Stitch (ch)
2. Slip Stitch (sl st)
3. Single Crochet (sc)

Ideal Projects: Think simple! Dishcloths, beginner-friendly scarves, and basic beanies are perfect for honing your skills.

1. Easy Crochet Dishcloth

Tips: Mastering tension is crucial here. Make use of online tutorials and practice, practice, practice.

Easy Level
