Judge Vaughn Walker’s Prop 8 Decision is Great

Most have probably heard that the Federal Courts have struck down California’s Prop 8 as unconstitutional, but I think the actual written decision itself is very well-done and is worth your time.

Okay, maybe not the whole thing. Yo, it’s long. But I’d at least start from around page 123 (which is # 125 on Scribd) where the Judge takes every single argument made in favor in Prop 8 and explains why they are irrational.

As someone who has been participating in this argument for some time, it’s nice to have someone who is both intelligent and familiar with U.S. law explain it so eloquently for me.

Marmaduke Explained is Great

Marmaduke demands his owners not only read him a story before he goes to bed, but that said story is a recipe from a cookbook. Marmaduke’s owner-man seems to take this in stride, but the ever-darkening circles under Owner-Lady’s eyes indicate that years of humoring a selfish and dangerously humongous beast’s every pointless whim have taken a maddening toll.

Listen: I’m sure that somewhere in the world there are folks for whom Marmaduke is simply the most wonderful thing around. I imagine these people own or have owned a Great Dane and do a lot of YouTube video forwarding. For myself, an avid reader of the funny pages, I’ve never been quite sure what the point of Marmaduke was. Why do they put up with his terrible behavior? Are these supposed to be funny or simply cute? What exactly is going on? It turns out all I needed was a good explanation.

That’s where Joe Mathlete comes in. He knows what Marmaduke is all about, and is willing to explain it to the rest of us. He used to do this on his blog but moved to the Houston City Guide in May of last year. Now I realize that Marmaduke is unbearably hilarious, and I only pray Joe Mathlete will do an audio commentary on the upcoming Marmaduke movie.

Hideaway by The Weepies is Great

Like so many of my favorite bands, I first learned about The Weepies from my indie pop station on Pandora. Though almost every indie pop band seems to have both a male and female lead singer, The Weepies stands out from the crowd since the songs from the guy are actually worth listening to! In fact, they’re pretty damn good (though I confess, if I had to choose, I still prefer the female lead overall).

My favorite songs off Hideaway are: “Hideaway,” “All Good Things,” “Wish I Could Forget,” and “Old Coyote.” Start from there, see what you think, and then decide buy the whole album because it’s all pretty excellent.

Fringe is Great

While no one was looking Fringe became the best show on TV! I know I’m a week late, but I watched “White Tulip” last night, the 18th episode of the second season, and it blew me away. My jaw actually dropped on two occasions. That is to say my mouth was closed, I witnessed something on a fictional TV show, and then my mouth was agape. That’s impressive!

The most important thing that distinguishes Fringe from lesser sci-fi shows like V and FlashForward is that the characters are actually likable. I really like Olivia, and Peter, and even Walter (though a little bit of “Let’s get ice cream!” goes a long way). I never would have thought Joshua Jackson would be one of my favorite leading actors on TV, but the guy is damn good. The last few episodes have been excellent, and I can’t wait for more.

Fun fact: Anna Torv (who plays Olivia Dunham) provided the voice and facial model for Nariko in the underrated-but-awesome PS3 game Heavenly Sword.
