Hello again,
I am trying to be more productive in my art. By that I mean produce art for others to see and hopefully enjoy. This may sound simple but for some reason I have been struggling with it. I constantly feel like "is this really worth doing?" and this is totally crippling. Because the ultimate answer is no, but thats not really the point. Or so I am trying to believe.
Please excuse the ramble-ness of this post, i am a poor writer.
I have been drawing almost exclusively in my sketchbook since last year. I have several projects underway right now. But I think that having too much planned can be over-bearing. So I am trying to find what my best workload is. Enough to keep an interesting variation, but still remaining doable.
I have some comix under way and a card game.

This is a new comic I am working on. It's called Mika.

Its about a retired explorer, who gets inspired to finish a long uncompleted desire to see the legendary ocean. I am almost done with the first issue.

Old Drawings

I have had two large charcoal drawings hanging in my studio(garage) for months now. Everytime i have to walk past them, my shoulder will rub against them. Removing or smudging the charcoal. Months. So i broke down and bought some fixative. I sprayed one, no problem. But the second one had become too smudged and mistreated. So i decided i would give it a make over, instead of tossing it.
This was fun.
It was a large drawing on "good" rag paper, so it had the potential of something good. But more importantly it had this disposable quality. And that disposiblity gave it the freedom to be anything.
This freedom is important, an artist should not be intimidated or scared of thr medium.
I am pretty enviromentally conscious individual, using recycled material whenever i can. But i try my best not to be scared of ruining a piece of art supply or wasting money. As long as you are learning, seriously focusing on your art, there is no waste.

The 3 images below are a progress sequence, in chronological order.

I ended up trying to make the drawing more of an atmospheric or impressionistic feel. Like a faded photo. With only hints of shape amid the faded shadow.

I am pretty happy with the result, i never really know where a drawing will lead. I just draw it.

hi,
It has been a hot summer.
I have been busy drawing everyday, doing some flyers, some graphic design, and comix as usual. I have posted over 500 times on here, but it seems like the blog is kind of a declining medium as more instant media is more popular. "the feed" is constant, overwhelming and has no memory. So I thought that I could use this site as more of a long form, self conversation. Informing the few fans I have stolen of what I am up to.
And speaking of Instant media:

They all pretty much have the same thing on them, my twitter usually have more non-comic or directly centered art comments. usually me being a downer. My instagram is usually pictures of my sketches and an occasional animal photo. More nonsense.
Okay, now that is out of the way.
what have i been doing for the last few months? I plan to post here waaaay more often.

Lots of monsters and mutants, just the usual fun stuff. My sketchbook is getting full which is always a good sign. I try to play as much as i can with colors. I am speaking about actual drawings and actual colors in real life, not digital. I think my digital colors are fine, but not as fun. the Bat-Ape skateboarding was digitally colored, and i think it looks great. But it is less exciting to do.

this gruesome fellow above was done completely digitally, I am interested in digital art. Although it seems like lately i dont have the time/patience to get over the learning curve. that and the fact that i am terrible at computers and still use my 10 year old computer for all my digital needs. soon, soon i will make that leap.

I have been drawing a lot recently, everyday drawing. And thats the key to drawing, or anything really. You just to have to keep at it. Obsession leads to perfection, but I would not recommend that. I dont follow that, and I am certainly not perfect. I dont think art should be, but thats another tangent.

Okay. So this OCTOBER 3RD AND 4TH I WILL BE AT A.P.E.!

This is special to me, because my first convention I ever tabled at was APE, and this year APE is returning to that first venue, and my new hometown of SAN JOSE, CA! so this should be a blast.
I have a good group of artists around me and i am stoked. hope to see you there.

Hi! Well this weekend I will be exhibiting at the Latino Comics Expo 2014 San Jose! I am really excited for this comic show, I will have all my new comix and art. I admit that I feel unprepared and a bit overwhelmed.

Lately I have been debating my future at exhibits as well at comics. but we shall see. If able you should attend, there is some major talent here.

Okay, when I see art online, sometimes it gets me down. But it shouldn't, art should inspire you as an artist. It should help you find out certain ascetics that please you, and help you make those artistic choices. Like that old bastardized art adage "young artists borrow, old artists steal." or something like that, but if you see some element you like try it out. This is within reason, dont make a career out of ape-ing some other artist. It's okay to follow an old master's lead or be influenced by another's style but not to be creatively stunted. Anyhoo, I recently did some art for my friend's albums, I am pretty happy on how they came out.

In this first one, I am stoked on the colors and how the clouds came out. which I borrowed from some cartoon I saw awhile ago, unfortunately I dont remember which one. the second one came out okay too, I was going for an ol' timey rubberhouse look, which I hope is fairly obvious.
