The tomato is called a fruit, despite it’s savory uses which would normally categorize it as a vegetable, because it carries the seeds of the plant. So, to be “fruitful” is to be responsible, to carry out the task it is entrusted with of carrying the beginnings of the next generation. I looked at two specimens of “fruitful” tomatoes today…I cut one tomato in half vertically…the design of the seeds inside in relation to the tuft of green on top was beautiful…then, I cut the second tomato horizontally, and the design seeds and flesh was equally beautiful, but contiained in the circle shape and did not include any of the other plant structure…another chance to look at what it means to be both vertically and horizontally relating to our growth.

Faithfulness is what produces the “fruitfulness” in our service. This summer, next to the concrete and brick walls of my house, tomato plants grew voluntarily. I wasn’t going to turn down the option of having a growing plant that could provide food for my table and that of my friends and neighbors, so I watered them and transplanted ones that needed their own space. Now, as I am expanding on the thoughts of finding beauty by a brick wall (episode 2.1)…I relish the thought of the surprise “fruit” that grows next to the wall of my house. I have faithfully cared for the seeds that grew and there has been a steady supply of vibrant, colored fruit to freely share with others.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Have you ever played the game Pick 2? You take letters from your Scrabble game, or an Anagram game…something with letters, and build crosswords with two letters at a time. It gets hectic when you are playing it with other people, you can end up with many leftover letters as other players find places for their 2 new letters and yell that you must pick another 2…therefore creating an exciting, competitive game of wordplay. Pick 2 can also be played a-la-solitaire…which is what happened with my G-A-I-N letters I had used as a visual yesterday. Two at a time, words like grudge, pain, twinge, govern, and nerd emerged in my crossword. One of the last words created in the vertical and horizontal scaffolds of wooden tiles was FEALTY. This is a word I’ve learned a lot about in the last year…it means faithfulness. In medieval Europe, “fealty” was sworn between two people, the obliged person (vassal or servant) and a person of rank (lord). This oath was done as part of a formal commendation ceremony to create a feudal relationship. Two = relationship…I’m the obliged and my savior is of the highest rank. Fealty…a horizontal and vertical Pick 2.

Yesterday I discovered “HEALING BEAUTY” out of the bits of some old signage…I had added the letters A-I-N-G to the composition. So, I started with a picture and now also have the addition of some letters…a GAIN. I could use those letters to talk about the beauty of growth (GAIN, AGIN), comment on the current financial crisis (GAIN, AIG, ING, NAG), or continue an exploration I started this weekend remembering the rules of english grammar regarding gerunds (verbs ending in ING).

My camera is broken, and it would be easy to think I have nothing to start another season of my thisleadsto episodes with…but I have hope, so I look around at what I “do” have. I have a picture I took of a tornado ravaged brick wall with the letters HE_L___ BEAUTY on the side. What a beginning…facing a brick wall with the subject of BEAUTY emblazoned on it. A “HEALING BEAUTY”…that is what process is. Please join me again…Where will it lead?
