Fragrance Review: Elizabeth Arden Mediterranean Breeze

Earlier this week, I was perusing the cosmetics department at Bloomingdales. I started chatting with a sales rep, and I asked him which brands he's into most these days. He listed off a few that didn't surprise me, and then he added, "And you know, Elizabeth Arden is making a big comeback."

I was glad to hear him say this because I've been thinking the same thing. For the longest time, I felt like the brand had a bit of an old-lady feel, but the more I try out its products, the more I think, "Huh! This is actually. . . really well done, and not at all in a Rose Nylund way."

So I was interested in smelling Elizabeth Arden's new fragrance, Mediterranean Breeze ($57) It's a limited-edition reinterpretation of last year's Mediterranean. Compared to the original, it's lighter and not quite as sweet. For the full review, read more.

It features top notes of white nectarine, bergamot, and sparkling grapefruit, and middle notes of florals and sweet almond oil. The base notes of musky cedarwood and sandalwood dance gently with the florals to neutralize what would otherwise be an overpowering sweetness. The result is a "clean" smell that doesn't verge into fabric softener territory.

My only complaint is the same that I have for most light, fresh scents: It doesn't stick around too long once applied. And even though I would love to escape to the Mediterranean for the real thing, a bottle of this will transport me for now.

Chanel Chance Perfume (for women)

Chance in French means 'luck'. Chanel and Chance sound so similar as if they were created for each other.

Chance is the only Chanel perfume in round bottle as opposed to the classical plane Chanel N°5 rectangle bottle. It is not accidental, though, as it is a 'wheel of fortune'. Beyonce is the face of a new fragrance

Armani is jumping on Beyonce's sweet success, making her the face of its new fragrance, Emporio Armani Diamonds.

Beyonce previously partnered with Tommy Hilfiger for its True Star cologne line.

Women's Wear Daily reported last week that the company has tapped the native Houstonian to appear in both print and TV ads to promote the scent, due in stores next fall. In TV ads for the fragrance, the star is also slated to sing her own take of a classic American song.

Last year, Giorgio Armani introduced Armani Code for Women, a counterpart to its popular men's fragrance.

It is said Lindsay Lohan told gossips at a party in Hollywood on Tuesday night she’s in talks with beauty giants Coty to bring out her own fragrance.
The giants already market celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria and David Beckham’s scents. But could Lindsay’s scent be the next celebrity fragrance that will come out? If you didn’t guess already, perfume manufacturers refused to confirm or deny Lindsay’s claims, saying only: “We don’t comment on rumours”. Lohan’s representatives neither confirm nor deny the news.
Come to think about, the events sounds familiar as a few months ago Lindsay Lohan claimed she is the next face of Chanel and at that time, Chanel representatives also denied the rumour.It is obviously that Lindsay Lohan wants to join Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears, into the perfume business but first she will have to take care of her reputation which suffered a lot recently.

As she would be the first to admit, Keira Knightley is not exactly famous for her hour-glass figure.
But her latest role - which sees her posing virtually naked to advertise a perfume - makes her look subtly different.
Despite the presence of a carefully-placed bowler hat, the 22-year-old actress appears to be just that tiny bit curvier.
It's certainly a different image from that presented in such hit films as Pride And Prejudice and the Pirates Of The Caribbean series.
Ever since she appeared in a sports bra as a 17-year-old in Bend It Like Beckham, the waiflike actress has done nothing to disguise her lack of cleavage.
She once spoke her dislike of her chest, saying: "I don't have any t***, so I can't show cleavage."
That's not always something the Hollywood publicity machine has been happy about.
While the British posters for her 2004 film King Arthur displayed her natural boyish look, the American ones were a different story.

Gucci Eau De Parfum II

Review: I discovered this perfume 2 years ago whilst working in perfume retail and it is my all time favorite. Gucci Eau De Parfum II is a very soft perfume, I love it because it is very fresh without being citrus and not sickly sweet like many floral scents. Although it is very feminine it does remind me a little of Burberry Touch for Men, which I also like, but it doesn’t remind me of any other women’s perfumes. It works well with my skin chemistry but because it is very light I like to layer it with the matching body lotion. This scent is perfect for summer wear. I also think the bottle design is beautiful, although the heavy glass top is a little impractical. There is also a purse spray which is more user-friendly but less economic. I would recommend this scent to anyone who is looking for a unique, subtle fragrance.

Christian Dior Fahrenheit 32 ~ fragrance review

Fahrenheit 32 is the creation of Hedi Slimane (Christian Dior's former artistic director), perfumer Louise Turner, and François Demachy, current director of perfume development at Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy. Fahrenheit 32 is described as a “fresh oriental” and its main ingredients are orange blossom, vetiver and vanilla — with added “fresh notes,” a “solar note” and aldehydes.

The only similarity between “original” Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit 32 is the shape of their bottles, so judge Fahrenheit 32 on its own merits.

If Fahrenheit was about ‘heat’, Fahrenheit 32, with its name (the temperature at which water freezes), packaging (frosty white and metallic) and advertisements (featuring high altitudes) seems to proclaim its “coolness” — while using rather “warm” ingredients.

Fahrenheit 32’s opening is indeed fresh (ozonic) — if a little artificial smelling; a powdery-sweet candy note peeps in quickly and then disappears. The orange blossom in Fahrenheit 32 is not very forceful or “independent” as a fragrance note because it must struggle with rather bland vetiver and sweet vanilla notes. (I say ‘struggle’ because there are tense moments in Fahrenheit 32’s mid-development, a rocky transition between the “fresh” and “oriental” aspects of the fragrance). There is a strange note in Fahrenheit 32 that smells one minute like clove chewing gum and the next like ozone with hints of melon — is this the “solar” note? (Whatever it is, this ‘lightly-spiced-melon-in-the-sky’ scent lasts longest on my skin.)

Fahrenheit 32 stays close to the body, zips thru its stages of development quickly, and then disappears within 90 minutes.

Fahrenheit 32 is one confused fragrance. Does it want to be “fresh” and clear…or “oriental”, sweet and powdery? Does Fahrenheit 32 want to be “cool”… or “warm?” Fahrenheit 32 seems unfinished to me — a scent in which ‘conflicting” accords never meld successfully.

Though some believe Fahrenheit 32 is ‘feminine,’ I don’t find it girly or womanly at all, but it’s not really masculine either (in the traditional sense); it’s just (again) confused. Like me! I neither love nor hate Fahrenheit 32 — I don’t like it either but I don’t dislike it. It just leaves me cold, or should I say lukewarm...?

The Most Common Perfume Application Mistakes

Believe it or not, there is an art to applying perfume and mistakes are made every day. If you want to enjoy your fragrance and more importantly, not have everyone moving away from you because of these common mistakes, here is my guideline.

-Less is always more. If you are attending a function with a lot of people, you will likely be competing with several other fragrances that are floating around the room. A light spray of scent on a cotton ball that is applied to one of your pulse points is usually enough.
If you apply scent to your inner wrists, do not rub them together as this can change the scent noticeably.

-Never spray the perfume into your hair. It can react to hair products that you are using with disastrous results. I made this mistake just once. Suddenly it seemed as if I had poured the entire bottle over my head.

By the end of the night, I disliked the scent intensely.

-Always consider the temperature around you when applying perfume. For travel purposes, this is very important. If it is cold, your fragrance will need to be renewed every three hours or so. In a hotter climate, the scent will last much longer.

Be prepared to suddenly find that your once loved scent doesn't smell the same on you. Perfumes can age or change their chemistry if not protected from sun and heat. Be sure to store the bottles properly.

Have you ever stepped out of the shower, dried off and then lavishly applied a scented body cream? Your fragrance is applied sometime later and suddenly you have two scents mingling. If that isn't bad enough, the oil in the cream will prolong the combined fragrances longer than you might wish. A better choice might be an unscented body cream or lotion.

Your favorite fragrance can also change because of your hormones. A scent that once smelled incredible, could suddenly smell quite nasty as a result. The good news is that once "the change of life" is over, you can go back to wearing your favorite scent with no problems.

You should also be aware of the fact that as you age, your sense of smell may slowly begin to dwindle, so "less is more" is even more important.

I'd come across a few magazine samples of DKNY Be Delicious - you know, the foldout bits you rub your wrists on! - and thought 'ooh, this smells good!'So when my boyfriend was bugging me about what christmas pressies I wanted, this perfume was a good choice.The packaging is lovely - comes in a nice littel box - and the metal and glass bottle the perfume is in is gorgeous - looks really smart and modern.The actual perfume lasts a really long time - if I put it on in the morning, although it's faded a bit by the evening, it's definitely still there.It's a citrussy fragrance - not overly heavy or sweet - but light, fresh and young.

The first thing that attracted me to this perfume was the bottle. It's absolutely beautiful! What's not to like? Tear drop shaped, colored to look like an iridescent rainbow! Just beautiful! The scent of the perfume is nice. Kind of strong, and flowery, but it's not "old lady" strong. I wear it only occasionally because it is so strong. When you go to put it, a dab will do and will last ALL day.

I find it funny that my first amazon review is over Estee Lauder's "Beyond Paradise". Being a guy, I don't wear perfume nor do i go out of my way to sample it at cosmetic counters. But my mom's 50th birthday is coming up and the one main thing she requested was this perfume, well my girlfriend overheard me repeat it over the phone and she knew exactly what she was asking for, turns out that she too has bought it in the past ( and liked it), she's 23 and my moms going to be 50. I think any women's product that can bridge that age gap is definitely worth praising, if not at least sampling. Oh yeah, it smells good too, not overpowering, but very......pleasant. Long story short, I bought her the gift set. Happy birthday mom.

Beyond Paradise has to be one of the best perfumes to come out this year. I have went through a small sample bottle, and now am beginning on a 3.4 oz bottle that I got for my birthday yesterday. I sprayed some on this morning, and I can still smell it as I write this review....and I sprayed it over 8 hours ago. This stuff is really great! The fragrance consists of a light, floral scent, but it is sweet too...not overwhelming like some other floral perfumes. The scent lasts all day...and it doesn't take much to smell good. Not only is the smell great, but who was the genius who came up with the colorful bottle and box? How wonderful! I highly recommend this...whether you are going in for a high-class business meeting or a fun-filled night on the town!!

Tom Ford wanted this scent to be like the classic men's fragrances of the seventies, and with notes of spices, woods, amber and leather - he may well be on the mark.

new nighttime/formal staple for men, but this one's so good I'm tempted to start using it as a casual curveball and during the day - a rainy, cold, steel-gray day would be perfect.

Gucci PH is an unmitigated triumph. I was shocked that it was such a recent release, though it's original enough in its composition with the requisite creative touches to SUGGEST manly scents of decades gone by.

I made a point in my Azzaro PH review that there isn't anything really new, but now the subconscious becomes obvious - "new" is a very relative measure indeed. The meditative frankincense, the bracing strength of the cedar, the verdant earthiness of the vetiver, the gourmand-inspired top notes of pepper and ginger (coupled with a clovey, bay rum-ish spice that I'm assuming comes from the "pink bay"), the sweetish amber and leather farewell (made more subtle for modern times) all invoke past successes and hint at combos we might have smelled before. And yet...

Through the power of deja-vu and brilliant "nosing," this frag gets synergistic without delay. Even if it was a carbon copy (which it isn't to me at all) it would seem all the more original now that freshness holds away.

Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils and aroma compounds, fixatives, and solvents used to give the human body, objects, and living spaces a pleasant smell. The amount and type of solvent mix with the fragrance oil dictates whether a perfume is considered a perfume extract, Eau de parfum, Eau de toilette, or Eau de Cologne.

It is impossible to describe a perfume according to its components because the formulas are kept secret. Even if the formulas are known, the ingredients are often too numerous to provide a useful classification. Cognoscenti can, however, generally get a handle on the principal ingredients. On the other hand, it is possible to group perfumes into olfactive families and describe them through the notes that appear as they slowly evaporate. Perfumes can also be classified according to their concentration.

Olfactive families

Fragrances can be classified into several olfactive families, by the themes, or accords, of these fragrances.

Floral: Fragrances that are dominated by the scent of one or more types of flowers. When only one flower is used, it is called a soliflore (as in Dior's Diorissimo, with lily of the valley).

Chypre: Fragrances built on a similar accord consisting of bergamot, oakmoss, pachouli, and labdanum. This family of fragrances is named after a perfume by François Coty by the same name. Meaning Cyprus in French, the term alludes to the inspiration behind the original creation.

Aldehydic: Fragrances that incorporate the family of chemicals known as aldehydes. Chanel No 5 was the first aldehydic perfume (created by the French perfumer Ernest Beaux in 1921). Others include Je Reviens and Arpege. Aldehydic perfumes have the characteristic "piquant" note produced by materials like Aldehyde C12 MNA.

Fougère: Fragrances built on a base of lavender, coumarin and oakmoss. Many men's fragrances belong to this family of fragrances, which is characterized by its sharp herbaceous and woody scent.

Leather: A family of fragrances which features the scents honey, tobacco, wood, and wood tars in its middle or base notes and a scent that alludes to leather.

Woody: Fragrances that are dominated by the woody scents, typically of sandalwood and cedar. Patchouli, with its camphoraceous smell, is commonly found in these perfumes.

Orientals or ambers: A large fragrance class featuring the scents of vanilla and animal scents together with flowers and woods. Can be enhanced by camphorous oils and incense resins, which bring to mind Victorian era imagery of the Middle East and Far East.

Citrus: An old fragrance family that until recently consisted mainly of "freshening" Eau de colognes due to the low tenacity of citrus scents. Development of newer fragrance compounds has allowed for the creation of primarily citrus fragrances.

Background

Since the beginning of recorded history, humans have attempted to mask or enhance their own odor by using perfume, which emulates nature's pleasant smells. Many natural and man-made materials have been used to make perfume to apply to the skin and clothing, to put in cleaners and cosmetics, or to scent the air. Because of differences in body chemistry, temperature, and body odors, no perfume will smell exactly the same on any two people.

Perfume comes from the Latin "per" meaning "through" and "fumum," or "smoke." Many ancient perfumes were made by extracting natural oils from plants through pressing and steaming. The oil was then burned to scent the air. Today, most perfume is used to scent bar soaps. Some products are even perfumed with industrial odorants to mask unpleasant smells or to appear "unscented."

While fragrant liquids used for the body are often considered perfume, true perfumes are defined as extracts or essences and contain a percentage of oil distilled in alcohol. Water is also used. The United States is the world's largest perfume market with annual sales totalling several billions of dollars.

History

According to the Bible, Three Wise Men visited the baby Jesus carrying myrrh and frankincense. Ancient Egyptians burned incense called kyphi—made of henna, myrrh, cinnamon, and juniper—as religious offerings. They soaked aromatic wood, gum, and resins in water and oil and used the liquid as a fragrant body lotion. The early Egyptians also perfumed their dead and often assigned specific fragrances to deities. Their word for perfume has been translated as "fragrance of the gods." It is said that the Moslem prophet Mohammed wrote, "Perfumes are foods that reawaken the spirit."

Eventually Egyptian perfumery influenced the Greeks and the Romans. For hundreds of years after the fall of Rome, perfume was primarily an Oriental art. It spread to Europe when 13th century Crusaders brought back samples from Palestine to England, France, and Italy. Europeans discovered the healing properties of fragrance during the 17th century. Doctors treating plague victims covered their mouths and noses with leather pouches holding pungent cloves, cinnamon, and spices which they thought would protect them from disease.

Perfume then came into widespread use among the monarchy. France's King Louis XIV used it so much that he was called the "perfume king." His court contained a floral pavilion filled with fragrances, and dried flowers were placed in bowls throughout the palace to freshen the air. Royal guests bathed in goat's milk and rose petals. Visitors were often doused with perfume, which also was sprayed on clothing, furniture, walls, and tableware. It was at this time that Grasse, a region of southern France where many flowering plant varieties grow, became a leading producer of perfumes.

Meanwhile, in England, aromatics were contained in lockets and the hollow heads of canes to be sniffed by the owner. It was not until the late 1800s, when synthetic chemicals were used, that perfumes could be mass marketed. The first synthetic perfume was nitrobenzene, made from nitric acid and benzene. This synthetic mixture gave off an almond smell and was often used to scent soaps. In 1868, Englishman William Perkin synthesized coumarin from the South American tonka bean to create a fragrance that smelled like freshly sown hay. Ferdinand Tiemann of the University of Berlin created synthetic violet and vanilla. In the United States, Francis Despard Dodge created citronellol—an alcohol with rose-like odor—by experimenting with citronella, which is derived from citronella oil and has a lemon-like odor. In different variations, this synthetic compound gives off the scents of sweet pea, lily of the valley, narcissus, and hyacinth.

Just as the art of perfumery progressed through the centuries, so did the art of the perfume bottle. Perfume bottles were often as elaborate and exotic as the oils they contained. The earliest specimens date back to about 1000 B.C. In ancient Egypt, newly invented glass bottles were made largely to hold perfumes. The crafting of perfume bottles spread into Europe and reached its peak in Venice in the 18th century, when glass containers assumed the shape of small animals or had pastoral scenes painted on them. Today perfume bottles are designed by the manufacturer to reflect the character of the fragrance inside, whether light and flowery or dark and musky.

Do's and Don'ts

Do keep your fragrances safe from extreme cold or heat.

Once a bottle of perfume is opened it should be used. Otherwise it will begin to fade or change its character with time. Long exposure to strong sunlight or extremes in temperature can disturb the delicate balance of the perfume and change its scent. Perfume, to last, should be kept in a cool, dry place away from direct light, preferably in its beautiful box. Just as books must be read... records played...fragrances must be worn to be enjoyed!

Do make it a rule never to try more than three scents at one time when you are shopping for a new fragrance.

Your nose will lose its ability to tell the difference. Apply fragrance directly to the skin when you are testing new scents. You cannot get a true reaction to the fragrance from the bottle. Apply a few drops to your wrist. Allow the heat of the body to develop the fragrance on your skin and then sniff. If you would like to test one or two additional scents, apply one to the other wrist... wait...and then apply the third to the inside bend of the elbow. If you want to delay your decision while you shop, be sure to write down which fragrance you put where, so you'll be able to refer back to it later on.

Do introduce the enjoyment of fragrance to every young person you know.

It is never too soon for them to experience the fun and benefits of fragrance.

Do use fragrance throughout every day.

It will increase your feelings of well being...add a special degree of graciousness to daily living...make life for you and those around you infinitely more pleasurable and enjoyable

Don't hoard your fragrance.

Open each bottle with anticipation and pleasure. Enjoy its fragrant contents regularly or you may be disappointed to discover it has spoiled or evaporated before your eyes.

Don't put fragrance directly on furs or fabrics.
It may stain.

Don't make your final judgements on a new fragrance

until at least ten minutes after you have applied it. By that time the alcohol will have evaporated and the blending of the fragrance with your own skin's chemistry will give you a true impression.

Don't choose a fragrance because you like it on someone else.

Fragrance is never the same on different people. Everyone is created equal until they use fragrance. It is your individual body chemistry which makes a fragrance special, unique and flattering for you.

Don't forget fragrances for men.

They have never been more of a basic part of masculine good grooming. Colognes, shaving foams, after-shaving lotions, skin conditioners, soaps, after-shower body rubs, talcs, all add a refreshing and delightful dimension to the masculine living.

1.Everyone has a personal "scent circle": approximately an arm's length from the body. No one should be aware of your fragrance unless he or she steps inside your "circle." Fragrance should be one of the most subtle, personal messages you send to those with whom you come in contact.

2.For a long-lasting effect, fragrance should be layered all over the body, starting with toilet water or eau de parfum, next in strength to perfume, to build the fragrance foundation. Because fragrance rises, spray or smooth fragrance onto skin from the feet to the shoulders. If fragrance is applied only behind the ears, it will eventually rise and disappear.

3.The wearer's diet can affect the way a fragrance smells and lasts on the skin. If the wearer is on a high fat, spicy diet, for example, fragrances will be more intense. A dramatic change in diet can alter skin chemistry, causing fragrances to smell differently

4.Skin type will also affect the way a fragrance smells on a person. Fragrance wearers with oilier skin should remember that fragrances interact with the oils in their skin to create a more intense scent. Dry skin does not retain fragrance as long as oily skin, requiring the wearer to re-apply the fragrance more often.
