This is my mother’s room up at Cape Cod.

I wish you could open the door and walk into the room with me. If you looked out that window? You’d see the ocean and hear the waves crashing against the shore.

My mother is amazing.

Truly.

So I wanted to show her how amazing I think she is with a quick bedroom makeover. I filmed a video (that I posted below) of her walking through the space and telling me about all the details and what she wanted to change, and you can see (and hear) her personality come through loud and clear.

But (don’t you love a makeover that includes a “but” or “however”)ย the challenge I have working on a makeover with my mother?

She doesn’t know what she wants…

…until she sees it.

Can anyone else understand?

She’s super duper extra visual.

So to help her “see” it, I mocked up three different design plans in the room.

It took me almost all day, but eventually she fell in LOVE with one of the design plans.

Here are all three design plans (and I want to see if you can guess which one she chose).

I took pictures from all sides (so when I show the makeover, I can show you the makeover from the same angles.

Here are a few details about the space:

  • there’s an existing ceiling fan that’s staying
  • the room measures approximately 13.5′ x 13.5′
  • the floor is painted plywood (and we are going to cover most of it up with a rug instead of this small rug that she has)
  • the walls are painted SW Pure White (and we are keeping the paint color)

Just listen to my response when she tells me I can’t paint anything. ๐Ÿ™‚

You can hear several of them in the video, but here are the requests that my mother had for the makeover:

  • the furniture was all staying (except for the bed)
  • none of the furniture could be painted
  • she wanted a new bed
  • we agreed the rug needed to be replaced
  • we talked about creating a gallery wall with all of these paintings that are so special to her
  • she needs new bedding

We talked through her vision and I put together three design plans.

Here are the designs (with input from my mother), mocked up in the space.

Here’s option number one.

The furniture placement stayed the same (there aren’t a lot of options with the existing furniture in this space) and the ceiling fan stayed.

I added this rug that I LOVE and changed out the queen-sized bed for a vintage-inspired queen-sized iron bed.

(Please note that I kept the bed the same in all three design plans because she loved it so much.)

I added two white lamps, a blue gingham duvet cover, a white duvet cover, and blue and white striped curtains at the windows.

Here’s this rug that she truly loved and wanted to see what it looked like in the space.

She also thought that it would hide the dirt because of the blue background.

So we designed the room around it.

I added another set of white lamps, a blue and white floral duvet cover, a white duvet cover, and the scalloped curtains at the windows.

The curtains are white with a blue scalloped edge (there are also other colors with the scallops as well).

Hello neutral.

Are you surprised?

We thought—the other two plans are blue and white, what if we introduced a neutral palette with a pop or two of blue?

I added a set of white lamps, a khaki quilt, a white duvet cover, striped pillows, hydrangea pillows, and then striped curtains at the windows.

My mother was all about it.

We spent the afternoon together dreaming, planning and VISUALizing to the sound of ocean waves.
