You’ll quickly notice that public garbage cans are almost non-existent. Yet, the streets are spotless. If you have trash, carry it with you until you find a convenience store. When you do, it’s polite to buy something before using their bins. A bottled tea or snack makes an easy purchase of gratitude.

3. Subway Navigation Takes Patience

Tokyo’s subway system is vast, layered, and sometimes overwhelming. Google Maps offers better subway directions than Apple Maps, but both apps can struggle. Remember that Tokyo is a three-dimensional city — if your map says you’ve “arrived,” check above, below, and around. Patience and awareness are key.

4. Be On Time (to the Minute)

Whether it’s a Shinkansen bullet train or a guided tour, Japan runs on precision. Trains depart exactly on time, and tours begin promptly. Arriving five minutes early isn’t just polite — it’s expected.

We started with a stop at Don Quijote, one of Japan’s most famous discount stores. Wandering its brightly lit aisles, we picked up souvenirs, snacks, and quirky finds — the perfect way to bring a little piece of Japan back with us.

From there, we visited the Yūshūkan Museum, located at Yasukuni Shrine. The museum offered a sobering look at Japan’s military history, providing context and perspective that balanced the lighter moments of our trip. It was a reminder of the complex layers of the country we had been exploring all week.

For lunch, we tried something entirely new — the Avatar Robot Café. This innovative café uses remotely operated robots as servers, connecting people with disabilities or limited mobility to meaningful work. It was more than just a meal; it was an inspiring experience that showcased how technology and human connection can come together in unexpected ways.

Our final morning in Kyoto began with a stroll through the enchanting Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. From there, we made our way to one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks — the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji). The temple, covered in gold leaf, shimmered in the morning sun, perfectly reflected in the still pond that surrounds it. It was a breathtaking sight, both dazzling and serene, and a fitting farewell to Kyoto.

By late morning, we returned to our hotel to collect our bags and enjoy lunch before boarding the Shinkansen back to Tokyo. In just a few short hours, we were back in the capital, ready to dive once again into its vibrant energy.

That evening, we joined a Shibuya night walking tour, weaving through neon-lit streets, bustling izakayas, and the famous crossing that pulses with life. Seeing Shibuya by day is one thing — but at night, under glowing billboards and lanterns, the district truly comes alive.

Day 6 was a perfect transition: the quiet elegance of Kyoto in the morning, and the electric heartbeat of Tokyo by night.

We left Tokyo early this morning aboard the Shinkansen Nozomi, watching the city fade into countryside scenery as we sped toward Kyoto. In just over two hours, we arrived at Kyoto Station and set out to explore the ancient capital.

Our first stop was the breathtaking Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its thousands of bright red torii gates winding up the hillside. Walking beneath the endless tunnel of gates felt almost otherworldly — quiet, spiritual, and unforgettable.

After a morning of climbing and exploring, we recharged with a hearty bowl at Kyoto Engine Ramen before stepping into one of Kyoto’s most cherished traditions: a kimono tea ceremony at Maikoya Nishiki.

Dressed in traditional kimono, we learned the art of preparing and enjoying matcha tea. The ceremony wasn’t just about tea — it was about mindfulness, hospitality, and appreciating beauty in the small details.

Before making our way to Ginon, we visited the Samurai Ninja Museum. Stepping into the Samurai & Ninja Museum in Kyoto was like walking back through the centuries into a world of honor, discipline, and tradition. The exhibits brought the history of Japan’s legendary warriors to life, showcasing authentic armor, swords, and artifacts that told the story of the samurai’s rise and influence. Beyond the displays, the experience was interactive—getting to try on armor and even practice a few basic techniques offered a unique connection to the past. It wasn’t just a museum visit; it was a chance to feel the spirit of bushidō and appreciate the artistry and values that shaped Japan’s history.

As the afternoon cooled, we made our way to Gion, Kyoto’s historic geisha district, for an evening walking tour. Narrow streets lined with wooden machiya houses and softly glowing lanterns transported us back in time. Learning about Gion’s history while wandering through its atmospheric alleys made for the perfect close to our first day in Kyoto.

We ended the night with a simple noodle dinner nearby, reflecting on a day that balanced iconic sights, ancient traditions, and a touch of magic under the lanterns.

Day 4 was a true Tokyo sampler — from the city’s famous seafood, followed by imperial history and an evening skyline view.

We started the morning with a brisk walk back to the Starbucks Reserve. Had coffee and an amazing fruit cup before embarking on our full day of activities.

We began the morning at the Tsukiji Fish Market, where vendors showcased the best of Tokyo’s freshest seafood. Our guided tour led us through stalls overflowing with tuna, shellfish, and endless varieties of fresh fish. Along the way, we sampled delicacies and learned about the traditions that make this market world-renowned.

After lunch, we traveled to Wadakura Fountain Park, where our guide met us for a private Imperial Palace tour. Strolling the palace grounds, with their stone bridges, moats, and gardens, was like stepping back into the shogun era. The contrast of history against the backdrop of modern skyscrapers made the setting even more striking.

However, Tokyo experienced a sudden and intense rainstorm with heavy rainfall, leading to flash flooding in streets and causing disruptions. The deluge led to the suspension of some rail services, including the bullet train, and halted flights at Haneda Airport due to lightning. We cut our tour short to avoid the lightning since the tour was outside.

To end the day, we walked through the city to reach the Tokyo Tower. As the sunset, we climbed to its observation deck for panoramic views of the city. It was the perfect finale — a blend of Tokyo’s historic depth and modern sparkle. The rains subsided, and the clouds parted during sunset to give us a spectacular opportunity to see the city in a new dimension.

Tomorrow, we board the bullet train to Kyoto for shrines, tea ceremonies, and the historic streets of Gion.

Day 3 took us out of the heart of Tokyo and into the shadow of Japan’s most iconic landmark — Mt. Fuji. It was a day that blended breathtaking nature with the magic of Tokyo’s modern art scene and skyline.

We began early, catching the bus from Kawaguchiko Station and meeting our guide at the Fuji Lake Hotel. From there, we set out on a private Mt. Fuji hiking tour, exploring forested trails and scenic viewpoints that revealed the majesty of the mountain up close. The air was crisp, the landscape serene, and the stories shared by our local guide gave us a deeper appreciation of the cultural and spiritual importance of Mt. Fuji.

After the hike, we ate at Menkyo Kaiden. This was a very traditional udon restaurant that served both hot and cold udon. There was a small wait, but it was worth it. The udon was excellent. Be sure to bring cash; they do not accept cards here.

After the udon, we visited ‎⁨Fujisan Onsen Hotel Kaneyamaen⁩. We found ourselves drawn to its serene Japanese gardens—an oasis of stillness framed by the majestic presence of Mt. Fuji in the distance. Wandering the carefully tended pathways, we admired koi ponds, stone lanterns, and perfectly manicured pines that seemed to invite unhurried reflection. The tranquility of the space was amplified as I paused to enjoy a cup of freshly whisked matcha tea, its earthy richness harmonizing beautifully with the quiet rustle of leaves and the sound of flowing water. It was a moment that felt timeless—an immersion in Japanese hospitality and tradition that nurtured both body and spirit.

We returned to Tokyo, ready to experience the city in a completely different light. That evening, we immersed ourselves in the surreal world of teamLab Planets Tokyo, an interactive digital art museum where light, water, and space merge into dreamlike installations. Walking barefoot through mirrored rooms, wading through water illuminated by digital koi, and getting lost in immersive floral projections was unlike anything we had ever experienced.

Day 3 was a reminder of Japan’s unique balance: awe-inspiring nature by day, dazzling innovation and city lights by night.

Tomorrow, we return to Tokyo’s traditions — with visits to the fish market, Imperial Palace, and another close look at the city’s history.

After easing into Tokyo on our first day, Day 2 was about diving deeper into the city’s cultural treasures — a journey through history, art, and a taste of Tokyo’s legendary nightlife.

It began with breakfast at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery, an experience that felt more like stepping into a destination than just grabbing a morning coffee. The space was expansive and beautifully designed, with copper details, multiple levels to explore, and the aroma of freshly roasted beans drifting through the air. We tried pastries paired with unique coffee blends, enjoying a slower start to the day while watching the city wake up from the large windows. It was the perfect way to ease into the rhythm of Tokyo—savoring the calm before diving back into the energy of the city.

Then, at Sensō-ji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo’s oldest and most famous Buddhist temple. Walking through the massive Kaminarimon Gate with its iconic red lantern and strolling along Nakamise Street, we felt surrounded by centuries of tradition. The air was filled with the scent of incense, and we paused to take part in the ritual of wafting smoke over ourselves for good fortune. We explored the shops surrounding the temple and grabbed a quick bite to eat.

From there, we made our way to Ueno Park and the Tokyo National Museum, where we explored artifacts and artworks that told the story of Japan’s past. The museum’s quiet galleries contrasted beautifully with the lively temple grounds, giving us time to reflect on the layers of history embedded in the city.

We made our way to Ushihachi, a lively yakiniku restaurant known for its high-quality Japanese beef and casual, welcoming atmosphere. The experience was interactive and fun, as we grilled our own cuts of perfectly marbled meat right at the table, pairing each bite with flavorful dipping sauces and side dishes. The restaurant had an energetic vibe, filled with the sizzle of grills and the buzz of conversation, making it feel authentically local. Sharing plates of wagyu and laughing over the experience made it one of the most memorable meals of the trip—a perfect way to end a day that blended exploration with the comforts of good food.

Day 2 showed us Tokyo’s many faces: sacred and spiritual, artistic and historical, playful and futuristic, and finally, vibrant and unforgettable under the glow of its neon lights.

After a long journey across the Pacific, I touched down in Tokyo, Japan, ready to begin the adventure ahead of us. The first day was all about settling in, adjusting to the rhythm of the city, and taking in the sights and sounds of this incredible place.

Our first stop was Shibuya Crossing, one of the busiest intersections in the world. It is estimated that 2.5 million cross this intersection each day.

Standing there as the lights changed and hundreds of people surged across from every direction was surreal — a true symbol of Tokyo’s energy and pace. As I explored Shibuya, it was clear this city doesn’t just exist on one dimension. Rather it is a truly 3D city where elevated sidewalks, stores and even subway stops exist all around you – above and below. Navigating off your phone’s map is a challenge since it doesn’t translate this multi-dimensional city effectively.

From there, I wandered through Harajuku’s Takeshita Street, a lively hub of youth culture, quirky shops, and vibrant fashion. It is said that fashion designers would travel to Shibuya to spot emerging fashion trends. The street was buzzing with color and creativity.

Visiting the Hachikō Statue in Shibuya was one of those experiences that felt both humbling and heartwarming. Just outside the busy Shibuya Station, in the middle of all the neon lights and endless streams of people, stands the bronze statue of Hachikō—the loyal Akita who waited at this very spot for his owner every day, long after his owner had passed away. It’s a simple statue, but knowing the story behind it makes the moment profound. People gather around, snapping photos and using it as a popular meeting spot, yet there’s a quiet reverence in the air. Amid the chaos of the famous Shibuya Scramble just steps away, this statue tells a story of devotion that outlasts time. Standing there, I couldn’t help but reflect on how such an unshakable bond between a person and their dog continues to inspire generations across the world.

Enjoyed a casual dinner before heading back to our hotel to rest up for the adventures ahead.

We started our day with something iconic: Dominique Ansel Bakery, the birthplace of the original cronut. The croissant-donut hybrid that took the world by storm did not disappoint. Flaky, filled, and perfectly sweet, it was worth every minute of the short wait. The bakery itself is charming, and the smell alone is enough to put you in a great mood.

Exploring the Oculus at the World Trade Center

Next up was the Oculus, the stunning transportation and shopping hub near the World Trade Center. Its soaring white beams and open-air feel make it one of the most unique structures in the city. It’s part train station, part modern art piece, and completely breathtaking.

A Powerful Visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum

Visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum was one of the most emotional and meaningful experiences of our trip.

Before even entering the museum, we spent time at the twin reflecting pools, which sit in the footprints of the original North and South Towers. The names of every person who lost their life in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are engraved in bronze along the edges. Seeing those names—touching them—brings the scale of loss into sharp focus. The gentle sound of water cascading into the pools creates a solemn, reverent atmosphere in the middle of a bustling city.

Inside the museum, we were struck by how thoughtfully and powerfully the story is told. The exhibits walk you through the timeline of the day, with preserved artifacts like twisted steel beams, emergency responder gear, and even a firetruck pulled from the wreckage. There are rooms where you hear recordings of last phone calls and watch footage that captures both the tragedy and the heroism of that day.

What stood out most were the personal stories—notes, voicemails, photos—that reminded us these were ordinary people living ordinary lives. The museum doesn’t just focus on the destruction, but on the resilience, unity, and compassion that followed.

It’s impossible to walk through without feeling a profound sense of loss, but also deep respect. The entire tribute is beautifully done—both a memorial and a living reminder that this history matters. It ensures that we never forget the lives lost, the families affected, and the strength shown in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

This was more than a museum—it was a moment of quiet reflection and collective memory, and we left humbled and grateful.

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

From Battery Park, we boarded the ferry to Liberty Island. Seeing the Statue of Liberty up close is something that never loses its impact. After taking in the views, we continued to Ellis Island, where we explored the immigration museum and tried to imagine what it was like for millions of newcomers arriving in America for the first time.

We specifically sought out the Annie Moore statue on Ellis Island, honoring the first immigrant to pass through its gates. My Ireland Pilgrim friends wanted to see a picture of the statue on the United States side. Sadly, the Irish section of the building was undergoing renovation, and Annie was completely covered during our visit. Still, we found her location and paid our respects—her story is too important to miss, even behind foam and Saran Wrap.

Dinner at Bubby’s

To wrap up the day, we headed to Bubby’s in Tribeca for dinner. The vibe was warm and relaxed—exactly what we needed after a full day. And the food? Spectacular. Their pancakes stole the show—thick, fluffy, and perfectly golden. It was the ultimate comfort food after a day full of emotion, beauty, and history.

And just when we thought the day was winding down, we turned a corner and saw the Ghostbusters headquarters. Yes—the actual Hook & Ladder 8 firehouse, made famous in the original Ghostbusters movies. Cue the theme song in our heads. We may or may not have hummed “Who you gonna call?” the rest of the walk back.

Because of course, in New York City, even your route home can become a movie moment!
