THOMAS WOLFE CONFERENCE: ASHEVILLE, NC

MAY 18-19, 2012

Please join us for the 34th Annual Meeting of the Thomas Wolfe Society, to be held May 18-19 at the Asheville Renaissance (31 Woodfin St.), just across from the Thomas Wolfe Memorial in Asheville, North Carolina.

The theme of the 2012 conference is “Thomas Wolfe and Appalachia.” Although proposals are welcome on any theme related to Thomas Wolfe and his work, presentations that explore the writer’s engagement with southern Appalachia are especially welcome. Please see the Call for Papers for more information on submitting a paper proposal.

Our Saturday night banquet speaker will be acclaimed mystery writer Mark De Castrique, whose novel Blackman’s Coffin is set in Asheville and draws on the world of Thomas Wolfe. Make your plans now to join us for an exciting conference in Wolfe’s hometown.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Thomas Wolfe and Appalachia.” Although proposals are welcome on any theme related to Thomas Wolfe and his work, presentations that explore Wolfe’s engagement of southern Appalachia are especially welcome. Possibilities include but are not limited to considerations of Wolfe’s relationship to home and the mountains, ecocritical readings of Wolfe’s writing, or a consideration of the ways his writing manifests Appalachian politics, sociology, folkways, philosophies, or aesthetics.

Conference Update: Tour the Flannery O’Connor House

For those of you arriving a day early to the Thomas Wolfe Society’s annual meeting, please know that we are arranging a special tour of the Flannery O’Connor house Thursday, May 19, at 5 p.m.

We will assemble in the Hilton Hotel lobby and be escorted by a SCAD writing student to the nearby house.

Cost is $5.

Please join us for the 33^rd Annual Meeting of the Thomas Wolfe Society to be held May 20-21, 2011, at the Hilton DeSoto in the historic district of Savannah, Georgia. The theme for the conference is “Wolfe and the Arts.” Proposals for scholarly papers on any aspect of Wolfe’s life or works are welcome, but submissions highlighting Wolfe’s connection to the arts, including music, art, dance, theatre, and the domestic and practical arts, such as cooking, carpentry, and architecture, are particularly encouraged.
