A Remembrance

From the first (and best) Rocky 1976. Almost fifty years ago. If my memory serves me right, the filming took place in January of 1976.

In the ring on the right side of the photo; that's Monroe Brooks in red trunks landing a stiff jab in my face. This was during the filming. We took several takes but this is the one they went with. All the gym scenes were filmed at the Main Street Gym in Downtown Los Angeles. That's actor Stan Shaw looking down at Rocky and Micky.

Monroe Brooks, was the California State Champion at the time. He was a terrific fighter in his own right.

A few months after the filming of Rocky, I had a fight scheduled at the Forum on the undercard of the Danny "Little Red" Lopez vs Art Hafey fight.

I was getting ready (in the Lakers dressing room) when in walks Monroe Brooks. "I heard you were fighting today. I just want to wish you good luck!" I thanked him and we spoke for a few minutes before he left to watch the fights.

No sooner does he walk out then an official comes in to tell me the fight was called off. The opponent was a no show. I can't complain though, we were given good seats to the fight. Danny stopped Art in the 7th round of a 12 round'er. The referee was Dick Young.

A couple of years later Monroe fought Roberto Duran in a 10 round non-title bout. He was a game fighter, for sure and showed tremendous heart but a left hook to the liver put an end to the fight. This was when Duran was Duran. The referee for this fight was Arthur Mercante.

Old school fight fans will remember Monroe Brooks,originally from Wichita Falls, Texas, he was a true gentleman and a class act. It was and will always be my absolute honor to share the gym ring and the scene fom the movie with him. Monroe passed away in 2018. R.I.P. Monroe Brooks.

Anyway, this is what came to mind when I saw this photo.

Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford

Not so much of a concise prediction but rather a reasonable assumption. I'm picking Canelo Alvarez over Terence Crawford, any kinda way.

He is the naturally bigger man. He has taken punches from bigger and harder hitting fighters. He has a better resume than Crawford.

Crawford has never - in my opinion - faced anyone of Alvarez's caliber especially with regard to Canelo's punching power.

Both men have something to prove. Alvarez is fighting for Mexico as well as his own legacy. I believe he is nearing the end of his great career. He wants to go out on his own terms.

Crawford on the other hand is still in the process of building his legacy. He is confident and well prepared fighter. He will leave no stone unturned in his quest for greatness.

Alvarez vs Crawford is a worthy fight and a throwback to an earlier era. The best fighting the best.

The first half of the fight will, more than likely, favor Crawford but the wear and tear will begin to show in the later rounds, a la Julio Cesar Chavez vs Meldrick Taylor. If it becomes a battle of attrition Alvarez takes it.

As always, may the best man win!

Carl Weathers 1948 2024

Very sad news. Carl Weathers has passed away. I do not yet know the circumstances.

He was, literally, the other half of Rocky and Rocky II. I met him briefly in 1976. He was friendly and approachable and spoke casually with all the boxers during the filming of Rocky.

He embodied the role of Apollo Creed and that is how I will remember him. Many other roles for sure but he was Apollo Creed.

Our condolences to his family, friends and many fans. He was 76. R.I.P. Champ!

Ryan Garcia and Defeat

"A champion is someone who gets up when he can't!" - Jack Dempsey, Heavyweight Champion 1919-1926

A good trainer can teach a young fighter to jab, hook, slip a punch and counter punch, along with all the intricacies that go along with training; skipping rope, running, a proper diet, etc, etc, etc.

However, there are some things that cannot be taught. In boxing, we call it the intangibles, intestinal fortitude, heart. That comes from inside a man (or woman). Some things can only be learned.

Last night, at some point in his fight with Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia realized he bit off more than he can chew. He was in over his head. He had no answers.

Losses are a part of boxing, for most a loss is inevitable. You can lose a decision or be knocked out and still be, internally undefeated.

That's not the case with Garcia. Davis took his will. Garcia's eyes said it all, he was defeated. Did he quit? Maybe, but only he knows the truth.That said, I am not going to kick a man when he's down. I'm pretty sure he is kicking himself harder than any of us could.Boxing is a tough business. It takes a lot to step into the ring, more than you could possibly imagine.

Whether or not, Garcia can get past this loss or not is entirely up to him. He failed his first "Baptism of Fire" but facing the aftermath of the loss will provide him with another. First he needs a rest and thinking time but the first order of business should be about the loyalty of his handlers. It is time to make the leap from boyhood to manhood. Clean your own house.

The relationship between a trainer and a fighter has always been similar to a father and son, in my case, more like grandfather and grandson. In some ways, not all mind you, a good trainer will know you better than your wife knows you.

"How you feeling today kid?"

"You seem a little pale today, you sleeping okay?""

"I need you to take a couple of days off. Relax and get back to the gym on Monday.

A good trainer cares and notices every detail of your life. Most importantly, he knows when you're ready to move up, regardless of how confident a fighter is. That's his job.

Other times, the relationship between a fighter and trainer, or a fighter and promoter can be more akin to a bickering couple on the verge of divorce. You need to pay attention to the signs.

Get back on the horse Ryan Garcia. Learn to reach deep. Find your heart and face your adversity. I'll be rooting for you on your comeback and for Pete's sake, shorten up the hook - it'll help you on the inside - keep your chin down and stop swinging so wide

The greatest living fighter today. The greatest lightweight of all time. One of the pound for pound greatest fighter to grace the boxing ring and one of the Four Kings. Also a gentleman's Iand a nice guy. An absolute honor to meet him and shake his hand.

It was good to see my friend former boxer Burney Spencer, also great to meet Anthony Huizar, Ray Mercer and Alfonso Zamora.

The general consensus seems to favor Gervonta Davis but my gut instinct says Ryan Garcia wins this one. Not betting the house on it though but Garcia needs to do two things; shorten up his hook and keep his chin down...otherwise.

There are not too many fights lately that grab my attention. Neither guy should be considered great at this point but a victory for either fighter would be a step in the right direction.

The Jack Dempsey Story

Years ago, 1966 to be exact, in the 7th grade at Mary Meller Junior High School in Pico Rivera California, this book, "The Jack Dempsey Story" by Gene Schoor caught my eye. By the time I was done reading it I was hooked.

The book itself is probably not the most in depth book on Dempsey but it was written for young readers and it was inspiring. This book is the genesis of my life long love affair with the sport of boxing (along with my father and Muhammad Ali). I checked it out from the library more times than I can remember during my junior high years.

I own other books on Dempsey but through the years I was always on the lookout for this particular book. One day, a few years back on Amazon, I searched for Jack Dempsey books, and lo and behold, there it was. Needless to say, I bought it.

Coincidentally, this book was also, at one time, a library book at a school in California.

Probably more than you need to know but I thought I would share this.

Back in the day, when boxing was at the top of the sportsworld, the heavyweight division was ruled by warring giants. In an era filled with greatness, even the contenders were legends.

Today one of those legends has died. Ernie Shavers, possibly the hardest puncher to lace up a pair of gloves Has passed away.

Our condolences to his family, friends and many fans. Rest in peace Ernie Shavers.

Paying My Respect

Happy Birthday to the "Greatest" Muhammad Ali. There will never be another quite like him. He backed up every claim, every statement he ever made.

I shook his hand once and he gave me a gentle right hand to the jaw, along with his famous scowl!! He gave my wife and kids a hug. He was a true gentlemen.

In my eyes he truly was the greatest!! Happy Birthday Muhammad Ali and Rest in peace!

Author Gene Aguilera's latest book on boxing: Latino Boxing in Southern California (Arcadia Publishing) is another fistic hit. Following on the heels of his previous book, "Mexican American Boxing in Los Angeles", Aguilera has positioned himself as one of the premiere chroniclers of boxing in the Southland and specifically the boxing world as seen through the eyes of the Latino boxing community.

This book, like so many of the fighters he writes about, has heart. I can appreciate that. Growing up in the Los Angeles area and having a father who was a boxer in the U.S. Army and a lifelong fan of boxing, it was hard not to become a fan and for a brief time; a boxer. I am familiar with many of the names mentioned in the book. It brings the past alive for me. Names like Roberto Duran, Art Aragon, Ruben Olivares, Bobby Chacon, Alexis Arguello, Lauro Salas, Julio Cesar Chavez, Salvador Sanchez and so many more fill the pages of his book, as well as such venues as; the Olympic Auditorium, the Fabulous Forum, the Los Angeles Sports Arena and the Main Street Gym. All familiar names to West Coast boxing fans.

He takes us on a chronological journey through time beginning with the early years of boxing in Southern California in the 1900's and the ensuing decades. That Mexicans, Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans and Latinos in general have become a dominate force in boxing is beyond dispute. They were exciting times and Southern California was the center of it all. He chronicles that rise in his book.

The book has something for boxing fans at any level and is filled with plenty of photos; fight posters, programs and magazine covers, as well as personal photos of the author in his younger days.

Mr. Aguilera uses his personal experience and his own encyclopediac sense of boxing history to produce another fine book on Los Angeles and Southern California's proper place in boxing's storied history. It is a good read and what's more, it is a book my father would have loved. Do yourself a favor and get a copy.

I took this book off the bookshelf this morning. "The Uncrowned Champion" by Joey Giambra & Fred Villani. It was autographed by Joey Giambra. It was not autographed personally to me. I bought it a few years back on Amazon. I'm going to read it again starting tonight.

I only met Mr. Giambra once and it was almost forty-two years ago but he left a big impression on me. Some people you meet and the memory is fleeting, others, for whatever reason, stay with you forever. Joey Giambra stayed with me.

He was in his mid forties when we met. He still looked formidable and in good shape. We were introduced by my trainer Mel Epstein. Mel knew everyone from the glory days of boxing. I did not have a sense of history, boxing or otherwise, at that time, but as time passed I became more familiar with the man I met.

"He's going to referee your fight tonight!" Said Mel. "Oh" Says I. We sat down and had lunch and talked for a while. He was warm, well mannered and treated me like a professional athlete, despite the fact that it was only my second fight. I appreciated that. He had a friendly smile on his face. That more than anything is what I remember.

Adios Mr. Giambra and Rest in Peace! It was my everlasting honor to meet you and shake your hand.

Joey Giambra the "Uncrowned Champ" Has Passed Away. 1931-2018

The great Joey Giambra has passed away! My prayers and condolences to the Giambra family. Such a great man and fighter. He will not be forgotten.

He was the referee for my fight with Eduardo Barba at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, on October 30, 1976 (I lost a 6 round decision). We shared the same dressing room and had a chance to talk and get to know each other a little. We also had lunch together, along with my trainer Mel Epstein.

Before he walked out of the dressing room he turned to me and said, "I like you kid! Good luck tonight!"

My memories of those days are few but he was one of the great memories. I was and always will be grateful to have met him. Rest in peace Mr. Giambra, you were the "Uncrowned Champion" and so much more!

Two Boxing Legends: Julio Cesar Chavez and Roberto Duran

Julio Cesar Chavez on the left, Roberto Duran on the right. Two bona fide Latin Legends in boxing but so much more than that. Two of boxing's finest that would have rose to greatness in any generation.

They never fought each other; age wise, weight wise and otherwise, the timing was all wrong. Chavez' star was rising as Duran was winding down his own career (though he did fight longer than he should have). together, they have a combined total of 234 fights.

In many ways they were made for each other. Both were at their absolute best when facing an opponent that wanted to fight. They would have no trouble finding each other.

If only there really was a mythical and mystical pound for pound Netherland where all the greats could meet and face each other in their natural prime and at their best weight without losing anything in the process. Instead, we are left to wonder.

Had they fought I'm convinced that it would have been Duran's hand that would be raised in victory. At his peak, Chavez was near impossible to knock out. If I remember correctly he was born with an abnormally thick skull. A curse for his opponent but a blessing for Chavez. I don't believe Duran could knock out a prime Chavez. With respect to Chavez, I think Duran had the better overall arsenal. Neither man was easy to hit but Duran mastered the defensive nuances better than Chavez.

Duran was an underrated but masterful counter puncher and I think this would be the key to a win over Chavez. Duran had his own left hook but Chavez had one of the great left hook in boxing period, what has generally become known as the "Mexican Left hook". Still, as Duran has proven throughout his career, he can take it.

In his later, years after dominating the lightweight division for seven years, Duran moved up to take the welterweight title from Sugar Ray Leonard, the Jr. Middleweight title from Davey Moore, and the middleweight title from Iran Barkley, as well as many other middleweights including a better than expected close loss to Marvin Hagler. He handled the weight gain much better than Chavez did.

Chavez captured the Super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight divisions and was one of the most exciting fighters of his era. He beat the best of his era, including, Hector Camacho and Meldrick Taylor (a clear cut victory as far as I'm concerned). Chavez fought to a highly controversial draw against Pernell Whitakerfor the welterweight title. (He lost). He moved up one weight class to many.

I always had a house full of friends and family when these two fought. They gave us their all and the gave us our money's worth! It pleases me to see both of them enjoying their retirement.

The Long Walk to the ring, …... and Respect

It never sits well with me whenever I hear someone call a fighter a coward. Almost to a “T”, most fighters that have made the long walk from the dressing room, to the ring, whether it be, professional boxing, amateur boxing, military, police or firefighters boxing, understand about respect. If you have made that walk into the ring you are deserving of respect. It's been earned.

When Oscar De La Hoya was fighting, he was often called De La Chicken. Floyd Mayweather has been called similarly ridiculous names, Gayweather being the most common. There may be a number of reasons to not like De la hoya and Mayweather, and other boxers but cowardice is not one of them.

It's no easy task to face another man in the ring because, despite the game face, and any and all bravado, a fighter still wonders. Yes, he is confident but still he wonders. No one knows what the outcome will be. A man, or a woman, is emotionally naked in the ring, for all the world to see. Not many have the kind of courage, at any level, to lace up the gloves, look the other guy in the eyes and then fight him. No easy task.

During a fight, someone will almost invariably say “Oh, that didn't hurt!”. I have news for you, they all hurt but you learn to push it aside. This is what you train for. At other times, again, someone will yell out “If it was me...... “ As if.

The worst of it, in my eyes, is to call someone who has trained hard, and dared to make that walk into the ring, whether he is a champion or someone making his debut, a coward. Years ago, Jerry Quarry was a color analyst for a fight, I cannot remember what fight it was. One of the announcers, again, I don't remember, made this statement as one of the fighters was stepping into the ring, “He has a bit of the dog in him!” In other words, he was a coward! To which Jerry snapped back, “No coward ever stepped into the ring.” Truer words were never said.

Years ago, my wife Jeri and I were going to see Julio Cesar Chavez and Oscar De La Hoya fight at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. About a week before the fight we went shopping for new clothes. We were in a men's clothing store when this young salesman, probably in his twenties was helping me and he eventually asked me (I'm paraphrasing) “Big event coming up?” No, we're going to the Chavez and De La Hoya fight."

I didn't get a chance to finish what I was saying because he immediately went on a rant about Oscar. My wife and I looked at each other because we both liked Oscar but I just kept quiet. We reached the cash register where a sales girl and an older salesman were standing. As he was ringing up my sale he continued with his rant. The two salespeople were rolling their eyes as he spoke. I ignored him until he said:

“Someone ought to kick his ass!”

“Why don't you do it?

“Huh?”

“I said why don't you kick his ass!”

“No, I was just....

It's not really that hard you know, all you have to do is find a gym, start training, win some fights and then challenge Oscar. It's not that hard really, …. if you've got the balls.

Silence

“Yeah, that's what I thought! Show some respect!”

Talk is cheap. If you think any fighter is a coward. Step up and find out for yourself. It's not that hard, really.

I woke up today to find that Sylvester Stallone posted this photo on the Official Sly Stallone page on Instagram, of him and I at the long gone Main Street Gym in Downtown Los Angeles. The photo was taken during the filming of the original Rocky in 1976.

I don't know if I can ever explain how lucky and how grateful I am just to have been a small part (and it was very small) of this epic boxing movie. It's one of my nicest memories of those days and I treasure it.

As nice as this is it's the reaction from my wife, kids and grandkids that makes this truly meaningful.

There are many fighters that have captured my heart over the years. Some of them may not have been the best and some were absolutely the best. It is usually a personal quality that draws me to a certain fighter, a big heart being at the top of the list but there are other qualities. It just depends on the fighter.

Boxing is the greatest sport in the world and these four fighters, with respect to all others were the best. These four are my pick. Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Robinson and Roberto Duran.

So many other honorable mentions, with some just a hair's breadth away from these four but these are the fighters that have captured my heart above all others. There were victories and there were losses There was drama, thrills, high points , painful low points and comebacks but through it all they continued to fight their hearts out for us, maybe longer than they should have but this is who they were. They entertained us and the world took notice when they fought. I don't know if we will ever see there like again.

The days when these four were fighting were the glory days of boxing for me.

Mayweather vs McGregor

When I think of the upcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor later this month I cannot help but be reminded of the ubiquitous quote by announcer Larry Merchant, “Boxing is the theater of the unexpected”.

The reasonable expectation, in this fight, is that Mayweather will win this fight easily and maybe by knockout. It's hard not to believe this. Mayweather is undefeated in his career as a boxer and McGregor is stepping into Mayweather's domain; the boxing ring, in which he is the undisputed master.

The unexpected, of course, is a McGregor victory. He has his fans and believers to be sure but almost to a man, boxing fans consider this fight a joke and a mismatch and I have to agree with them.

The caveat in this whole affair is Mayweather himself. When he steps into the ring on the 26th of this month, he will be 40 years old (McGregor is 29), and it will have been almost two years since he last fought (a unanimous decicion over a tired Andre Berto). So how are we to accurately gauge him? Maybe you can but I can't.

I personally give McGregor a snowball's chance in hell to win this fight, which is to say I give him no chance at all. If the fight were taking place in the cage I would feel the same way about Mayweather. I don't discount any man who comes to fight. I have to give him a measure of respect simply because he is a man and a fighter and champion in his own right. I respect the attempt and the effort.

History has played cruel tricks at times with boxing fans. Whenever we seem to find ourselves believing that someone cannot lose a fight, or someone cannot win a fight, the unexpected always happens. We bet the house and we lose.

So what am I saying? I'm saying I am absolutely sure that Mayweather will win this fight any kind of way. I just won't bet the house on it. (I'm not paying for it either)

I'm not sure what the event was but this group of fighters is just a small part of what made the 1970's and the 1980's one of the greatest in the history of the sport. The talent and the competition was thick. What an era!
