What's the difference?

• A Fax-machine is a electro-mechanical device, connected to a 'phone-line, and receives it's signals and code from the sender's fax machine. It can be set in various ways, but most businesses find it necessary to keep it on 24/7, so as not miss any communications. This means that it also receives unsolicited faxes, which are often lenghty adverts. Paper and toner gets used up, so some businesses therefore switch the fax machine off when un-attended.

• A e-Fax is a speciallly allocated number, usually -in South Africa- commencing with the number 0865 or 0866. The fax-message can be sent from the sender's PC/laptop to the recipient's PC/laptop and is received in the Inbox to be opened and read like a normal e-mail. The recipient can then choose whether to discard or keep the e-Fax and also whether to print it. This can at least save paper and Toner (or ink). The e-Fax is also a far quicker method of sending a fax, as fax-machines easily have a huge queue buildup.

In this modern way of life, it is almost tragic to find mostly retired folk that have failed to maintain general skills to keep up.
We've all met them! They have no clue how to:
• use a cell-phone, remote, fax machine, the Internet, send/receive e-mail or woe!-to program a VCR.
• They've no idea how to use a MP3 or I-pod, a auto-washing machine and even a new micro-wave can defeat them totally!
• No modern TV set for them, as that too can defeat them!

Well what should they have done?
It's not easy at first, but they need to find someone with plenty of patience to demonstrate things on a very repetitive basis exactly how things operate.
• They need to master one thing at a time.
• Step-by-step instructions would also assist them greatly.

• Set up a appliance list so that each can be dealt with systematically.

• Demonstrate that many tasks tend to have similar steps to make things operational.
• Slowly but surely we hope and trust their instructor will manage enough progress to enable their skills to re-awaken from years of inactivity.

So now you've managed to get them to use every-day modern applainces.

Next tackle the communications devices.
• Start with a cell-phone and explain all to them and help them to operate it successfully.
Teach them how their service provider can also be very useful on their Helpline.

• Next have a go with their TV set, the video recorder, the DVD player, the mini-home player/radio, the fax-machine, the gate/door remote, the swimming-pool timer and the modern telephone system. This is already quite a list, so take things slowly and step-for-step.

Lastly comes the PC !

This alone could take the most time and patience,especially if they're still completely computer-illiterate.
• The obvious things are turning it on & how to shut it down. Basic stuff!
• They would need to told enough about Operating Systems to get by; about useful programs such as MS Word or Open-Office Writer to write with before going to a e-mail program such as Outlook Express. Help them how to open email, to reply, to forward etc.
• After a further period of getting used to that, you could start them on learning about browsing and searching for subjects using the search-engines.
• Some old-timers manage all this and can help themselves. That's great! It means your teaching methods have worked and their innate intelligence and curiosity have combined to help themselves..
