(or; how to be a seasoned bed-sweater).

Sometime around my 40th year I started getting hot-flashes.
They started in the winter. I remember because I would go outside in the 20 degree weather to cool down. They would hit me a couple times a month and only last for about 5 minutes. Life would go on and I would forget about them til the next one hit.
At the age of 44, the hot flashes would come about 10 times a day and I would sweat profusely during them. Trips in the car would leave me soaking wet if the heat was turned on. I had to rearrange my seat in the living room so I was as far from the heater as possible.
Because I soaked my clothing, I quit going out in public, except to do appointments and house-hold shopping. It was/is too hard to feel comfortable while sweat is dripping down my face and my shirt is stuck to my torso.
Life has become very simple during the peri-menopause years: Take care of the house, shop for household items, hit thrift stores to keep my sweat pants & tank tops current and buy everything else online. Simple!
I can't wait to get my life back...relatively sweat free.
I want to wear my soft warm winter sweater, my fuzzy vest, my black cape---my motorcycle leathers! That day is approaching....I'm ready.
Pause already!!!!!

PS...Night sweats...the first time I had one (44) I thought I peed the bed (and I don't even drink alcohol)--until I realized my hair was soaked also. Now at 48 I am a seasoned bed-sweater. The best advice??? Invest in a few water-proof bed pads to lay under yourself or go for the large mattress cover.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ladyxmess.blogspot.com/2010/10/peri-menopausethe-sweat-years-or-how-to.html' title='Peri-menopause...the sweat years. It's really nice to have a lot of experience behind my decision making...but now I chose the end result that won't leave me out of breath or to stiff to stand up after I have been seated.
I made Many bad decisions when it came to how I treated my body. I worked hard, played harder & crashed into many proverbial brick walls.
Some of the bad choices from my past have decided to lay claim to specific parts my body & they are pissed!
I'm not sure if Mom was right all those years ago...but my knuckles have arthritis & it's probably from cracking them. (I did do quite a bit of physical work while employed, I'm sure that contributed also-but the knuckle thing...mom warned me).
When I get injured, it's usually something really weird that causes the injury.
At 17 I was running to get on a bus, I jumped up when I reached the door (still running) and hit my head on the top of the door entrance--knocked myself out for a few minutes. I have an injured neck now, probably made worse over the years because I wouldn't sit up straight the way MOM told me to, numerous times. When I was 27 I was at a surf party (in the middle of February..in Seattle). I had a real coconut fall onto my head (from a fake tree) and ended up with a nice concussion and an expensive hospital bill.
I pulled my hip muscles while bowling and ended up on crutches---I am banned from bowling FOREVER.
I broke my collar bone while jumping off a swing (age 37--the swing was actually at fault, but that doesn't change a broken bone).
I have many more stories....but these few are to give you an idea of how I have been injured through the years & how all those joints, muscles, tendons and bones are reacting the older I get. They are not happy.....
Mom was right, all that nagging she did about the posture and being good to your body.
I just hope my face doesn't get stuck "like that".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I feel an "M" fest coming on~~Menopause, moms, moods....funfunfun
Damn Monsanto anyways!
It's all about the money.........
I tried to grow my own tomatoes this year, but the weather was too crappy.  I am getting my garden set up for next Spring so I can have a successful crop...making a mini-greenhouse out of chicken wire and some thick plastic.   Until then, I shall visit the public markets that have the local gardeners wares for sale.  Not many things tastier than a home grown tomato.
(couch) Potatoes & Onions
I wish the Reality shows of today were on in the early 80's~~I would have applied for most of them.   I am just a couch contender now...telling the contestants what they should be doing &  shaking my head at all the stupid moves.   Who would know better than I, a tired lady with gray stripes in her hair and a closet full of sweats?
I was quite athletic "in the day", but that day is over.  I have settled into the butt-print in the couch with my laptop, while the Television entertains me between Mafia Wars & friend catch-up on Facebook.
                                             ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have returned from the kitchen with a very good question...are there any Onions as sweet as the Walla Walla Sweet Onion? Are there?
Walla Wallas are only available for a short time...I bought two small bags of them & they went rather quickly. I eat them like I eat an apple.... yumm...just thinking about eating one gets my salivary glands working. I have bought the other "sweet" onions at a variety of grocery stores & have not found any that are as edible raw as my sweet Sweets.

While you are checking on onions, I will take a short break.
