When 3G/HSDPA is present, Wi-Fi is absent (or vice versa) or when the rear camera is decent either the secondary videocall camera is not there or the video recording on the rear camera is at a pityful 15 frames per second. This is probably a vile marketing strategy from the Finnish manufacturer or simply the thin sizes of the devices prevents the recent Nokia phones from having comprehensive specs like the N79. This time Nokia makes two C5, one with a 3.15 MP camera and the other one called the C5-5MP, which obviously has a 5MP camera and the price difference between these two is of Rs 350. Not a big deal, but this eye candy smartphone could have been much better if only it had Wireless Fidelity support and its video recorder capable of 30FPS. The major advantage of the device is 2.2″ QVGA 16M display which provides excellent clarity, even in sunlight. Or else the usual specs it has that are commonly found on other mobile phones is the 50 MB internal storage, microSD slot of up to 16GB, VGA videocall front camera and Symbian OS v9.3, Series 60 rel. 3.2 which provides multitasking being supported by a 600 MHz ARM 11 CPU + 128 MB of RAM.

The 2MP is below industry standards in comparison to other low cost Nokia candybars, but this phone has some other good points like a large 2.4″ screen of 320×240 pixels (the Nokia E5 has a 2.36″ screen of same resolution), no 3G but has EDGE Class 32 + Wi-Fi 802.11b/g support. The 55MB of internal memory space can be externally increased with a microSD of up to 8GB (2GB is offered for free on purchase of the phone) and note that it also has Stereo FM radio with RDS support and a 3.5mm audio jack that will provide pretty good audio quality. There’s a microUSB port but that will be useless to many because the cable is not provided in the retail box and worst, the phone cannot be charged with it.

All these specs looks like a typical smartphone (except for the low RAM) but it’s actually just a mobile phone, with no multitasking, of course. What’s the point of a 1GHz CPU then? Probably to play games like Angry Birds smoothly? Yes because the 2D physics game is an exclusivity to the Asha, but the omission of a directional pad on the keyboard can be annoying for playing other normal J2ME games. The camera (rear only) has a 3.2MP captor and can record videos in VGA mode (640×480) at 15fps and considering the Nokia X2 can take photos in 5MP, that’s not a good job from the Finnish manufacturer. But still, if you don’t like typing on numeric keypads and would like to try a 2.6 inch touchscreen phone, why not give this a purchase.

Fortunately it tries to sort things out with its excellent audio quality, dedicated music keys and EDGE class 32. The battery life is level with the best smartphones on the market with a standby time of 624 hours. While many will complain that the Symbian Series 40 is old and lacks multitasking, its interesting to note that it does have more apps available than Series 60. Other specs include MicroSD card slot up to 16GB, 2.2 inches screen of 240×320 pixels, microUSB with on-the-go support, 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and Stereo FM radio with RDS.

Starting with its excelling abilities is the camera, its rare to find one that sports a 12MP (4000×3000 pixels) with autofocus and Xenon flash, but the bad news is that the video recorder isn’t on par with the top smartphones as it can only record in 1280×720 at 25 fps. Note that after installing the “n8 camera update” video recording in 30fps will be available. Concerning the CPU and amount of RAM, which is a 680 MHz ARM 11 and of 256 MB respectively, seems too little, well only if it was running Android, cause Symbian^3 OS (upgradable to Symbian Anna OS) runs swiftly on these specs. But still, for that price you would have expected a 1 GHz CPU and 512MB of RAM. The relatively low autonomy is the worst annoyance of this phone as it provides only about 400 hours in standby (top smartphones have +600h) and the battery cannot be manually replaced the user.

It does has the same CPU as the iPhone 4 (1 GHz Cortex A8), but as mentioned previously, the rear camera is a 8 MP one and can record videos in 720P. The screen size is of 3.9 inches and has a resolution of 480×854, the onboard storage (eMMC) is of 64 GB and the RAM of 1 GB. If you were looking for android on this phone move on because this one runs on MeeGo 1.2, a Debian-based Linux mobile operating system. As long as they don’t have dependencies, debian programs (.deb) should run be able to install and run. The disadvantages this smartphone are not very substantial but could have been avoided. Examples: Only a micro SIM card can fit in this phone, there’s no memory card slot, and the SGX530 GPU is older than the one in the iPhone 4.
