One of the questions we frequently receive is why three? Through our own personal experiences we realized it was much easier to pick a business when we had fewer options - and it's even easier when they are the best in the biz! :^) We didn't want to go too low, say like one, because we understand that every person has their own likes and dislikes and one or two would be too limiting. We didn't want to go too high, because having too many choices becomes overwhelming making it difficult to decide on which business to go with. At Three Best Rated®, we want to make it easier to find the best businesses, not harder, so three felt like the perfect number.

Welcome back to the sixth - and final - part of the Three Best Rated® 50-point inspection explained! You are on the final frontier to having a comprehensive knowledge of our inspection! Good job! If you haven't seen part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, or part 5 be sure to check them out. Now let's jump right into...

Our tenth and final category: Miscellaneous

Miscellaneous is comprised of 12 sub-categories that didn't quite fit anywhere else.

Real Discounts - Authentic discounts or offers for customers

If discounts are offered, we want to ensure they are legitimate. You aren't penalized for not having discounts, simply rewarded.

For restaurants obviously this is more applicable. Restaurants usually have a promotion or discount running at all times in order to draw customers in. Like I said earlier, you aren't penalized for not having them, but if your competitors are all getting full points in this area, you might feel like you are.
For doctors this is less applicable. However, a surprising amount of doctors do have some sort of discount going on (free flu shots anyone?) so it is still considered.

If you don't run discounts, don't worry about it too much. However, pay attention to what your competitors are doing and what customers are reacting to. If you do run discounts, ensure they are current and legitimate.

Price Comparison - Fair prices for the services

We want to ensure prices are fair for both customers and businesses. Part of what makes a great business the best is being able to accurately price their services or products based on their market, competitors, and own cost curve.

This is applicable to all businesses! I would dare say there's not a single business owner that hasn't agonized over what to price their products or services :^)

Finding a fair price for your business is paramount to creating a successful business!

Location Proximity - Within city limits

When listing a business as one of the best in XYZ city we obviously want them to reside in XYZ city. If they don't, they will not be considered for that city.

This, again, is applicable to all businesses.

At Three Best Rated, we believe local businesses deliver superior services, experiences, reliability, and convenience! Of course we want the businesses we list to be local to the area they're listed under!

Specialization - Unique services offered by the business

This refers to a unique specialization the business offers the customers

For our restaurant, this refers to a dish that is unique to the business. For example, if a Chinese restaurant offers a special shrimp and taro root dumpling and no one else does then this would be their specialization.
For our doctor, this would encompass unique or difficult treatments, procedures, or surgeries that are performed by only a few doctors in the city.

Specialization is a unique service that sets the business apart from their competition.

Gift Vouchers - Authorized, authentic gift cards or certificates

Gift vouchers are an excellent way to generate interest in your business or make a sale that you wouldn't have otherwise. Plus, going through the whole process of setting up gift vouchers and the infrastructure needed to redeem them is a small way to signal that there is interest in the business.

This is applicable to any business that has gift vouchers. If you have them, you will get points!

Gift vouchers are a great way to direct money to your own business that may not have been spent there otherwise. Plus, people like gift cards!

Multiple Branches - The number of locations within the city

Having multiple branches usually means the business is popular with the customers so we like to commend those businesses!

This is more applicable for our restaurant. Restaurants have an easier time of branching to multiple locations then say a doctor would.
That being said there's plenty of doctors that do have multiple branches and they are commended here!

Videos - High-quality, trustworthy videos about the business

Videos are an excellent way to generate interest in your business. High-quality videos show that extra attention to detail that makes a good business a great business!

This is applicable for all businesses. Every type of business can make a video without it being out of place!

Videos are a way to connect to customers on a personal level!

Call Inspection - Responsiveness and quality on the phone

A phone call is probably the most popular way for customers to communicate with a business without simply showing up. A business should be polite and helpful on the phone.

This is applicable for every business that has a phone.

A lot of phone calls are what I call "discovery calls," as in customers are trying to get information from the business to decide if they want to shop there. It's important for a business to be polite and helpful on the phone or risk losing a potential customer.

Insurance Acceptance - Covers major, most, or both insurances

We want the businesses we list to cover a wide range of customers so naturally we want to see major insurances and a wide range of insurances covered.

For our restaurant this is not applicable. You do not need insurance to go to a restaurant. (It would be nice if insurance companies paid for my meals though!)
For our doctor, this is heavily considered. For most people, medical procedures are out of reach without insurance so we want to ensure the doctor is able to take a wide range of customers.

We want to ensure doctors (and everyone else that accepts insurance!) are able to cover a wide range of customers. This means the doctor covers major insurances and a wide variety of insurances!

Address Validation - Physical location validation

This is part of Three Best Rated's commitment to due diligence. We want to ensure the business is where it says it is, hasn't moved, or isn't closed down.

This is applicable for business that have a brick and mortar storefront. Obviously this isn't applicable for online business or mobile businesses.

Website Source - Reliability and completion of the business website

The website should have full and clear information about the business. The website should be reliable (should not be down often) and should be safe for visitors (no viruses, spam, or inappropriate/dangerous ads).

This is applicable for all business!

Three Best Rated gives first priority to the business's website, second priority to social media, and third priority to other local websites.

Let's start on our ninth category: Reviews

Reviews has 9 sub-categories

Legitimate Ratings - The legitimacy of the ratings and reviews from customers

We want to ensure we are only considering real reviews. Three Best Rated has systems in place to detect fake reviews. They are then thrown out.

This applies to all businesses!

A real review needs to be from a real person about a real business and a real service.

Current Evaluation - The recent ratings and reviews from customers

Older reviews are usually not as relevant. This is why we look at more recent ratings! Of course, we would like to see recent positive reviews.

This is applicable for all businesses!

Reviews are one of the only ways customers can provide the business (and other customers) feedback on their experience. We want to see recent positive reviews.

Fake Reviews - The prevalence and frequency of fake reviews as well as the type (positive or negative)

Nobody likes fake reviews. Businesses don't like fake reviews. Customers don't like fake reviews. A large amount of fake reviews will result in less points being awarded.

This is applicable for all businesses.

Reviewer's Info - Reviewer's identity and history

Reviewer's information (profile picture, name, history, etc.) should be real.

This applies to all businesses.

This is a part of Three Best Rated's commitment to due diligence. We want to ensure that the reviews are real and are made from real people.

Reviews Study - the spread of reviews throughout the years

A consistent spread of reviews throughout a long period of time shows repeated and sustained interest in the business.

This is applicable for all businesses!

We look for reviews to be spread across the operating years with no sporadic reviews and ideally increasing in number as the business increases in popularity

Responsiveness - The quality and responsiveness of the response to customer feedback

Most review sites allow for business owners to respond to the reviews they receive. The way a business owner responds is telling to how they value their customers.

This is, as before, applicable for all businesses!

At Three Best Rated, we are not going to tell you how to respond to customer reviews. A business should take into account their mission statement and respond how they feel is right by the business.

Negative Reviews - The amount of negative reviews

A business will never be able to satisfy everyone. There will always exist at least one negative review. However, if the majority of the reviews are negative, that isn't a good sign (unless your this guy)

This is applicable to all businesses

A large amount of negative reviews shows that the majority of the customers are not satisfied with the services they are receiving. We want to list business that customers want and like going to!

Review Analysis - Analysis of the detailed reviews from customers about their experience

We do a detailed analysis of all the reviews (both positive and negative) with the fake reviews thrown out to determine how customers feel about the business and the general feedback.

This is applicable to all business.

This category takes into account information about the business owner(s), how the customer was treated, the general atmosphere... basically everything other than the service they received. All business (even doctors) are reviewed and we at Three Best Rated want to find out exactly what the customers like or dislike about each business!

Reviews Accuracy - The detailed reviews from customers about the unique services they received

This is a detailed analysis of the reviews over the unique services the customers have received.

This is applicable to all businesses, however for doctors, customers typically will not reveal the exact service they have received.

We want to know if customers liked or disliked the unique services they have received from the business. Clients of doctors usually don't want to reveal to countless strangers their private medical procedures so they don't typically share this information. However, if they do it is taken into account as well.

You might notice as you continue to read on, but the next two categories are typically applicable to everyone. These two deal with the good (awards) and the bad (complaints).

Let's discuss our seventh category: Awards

Awards has three sub-categories

Awards History - Consecutive awards in their area of business

This refers to any particular award the business receives consecutively

This is applicable to every business! While the awards may change from business type to business type, the acknowledgement doesn't!

Receiving an award for years in a row shows a pattern of excellence no matter who you are!

Multiple Awards - Awards from a variety of sources

This refers to the variety of awards a business receives

Again this is applicable to everyone. As discussed above the nature of the awards may change, but the acknowledgment doesn't.

Receiving different types of awards shows that many different organizations agree on one thing - your business is pretty darn great!

Achievements - Endorsements and honors

Achievements refers to the number of rewards received by the business

This is applicable to all businesses!

The more awards a company receives the better. It shows a large amount of people agree that the business deserves awards!

Next is our eighth category: Complaints

Complaints is made up of 4 sub-categories

Three Best Rated Complaints - Complaints received by Three Best Rated

Every now and then we receive complaints about a business. We do encourage everyone to let us know their thoughts on a business, good or bad. This helps us refine our list and keep it accurate. Of course, we do our due diligence to ensure that every review we receive is accurate.

As is the running theme, this applies to everyone.

When we receive a complaint we will ask for permission to share it with the business (with all personal information removed, of course) so they have a chance to address the complaint and are made aware of the feedback. The response is evaluated in the next sub-category.

Response from Owner - The response to the complaints above

When given permission, the complaints from the sub-category above is given to the owner. The owner now has the chance to respond to the complaints. Their response will be evaluated and noted here.

This applies to everyone.

There's no right or wrong way to respond to the complaints. We suggest responding however you feel is right for you and your business. Please understand that these complaints aren't made by Three Best Rated, but by customers.

Fake Complaints - Complaints that are well, fake.

Complaints received from competitors, customers who misidentify the business, dissatisfied employees or business partners typically are fake complaints.

This is applicable to all businesses.

Fake complaints are typically identified by business owners during this process. Fake complaints are not rated, but are noted and filed. They are not held against the business.

Lawsuits - Lawsuits the business is involved in and the outcome

When evaluating lawsuits we take into account the nature and outcome of the suit. When deemed appropriate, the lawsuit will result in the immediate removal of the business from our list.

This applies to everyone.

When evaluating lawsuits we take into account the nature of the case, the defendant and prosecutor, and the outcome of the case in order to make any decisions regarding the removal of the business.

Welcome back to the Three Best Rated® 50-point inspection explained! If you haven't seen part 1 or part 2, I highly suggest you read through them!

Now with that out of the way, let's jump right in!

Our sixth category: Website

This one is a doozy with 8 sub-categories

Compete Information - The website contains complete and detailed information

The world is online (sorry cavemen!) and a complete website is important for customers! Your website will typically be the first thing people will visit when they want to learn more about your business and having a poor, incomplete website will speak volumes about you.

For our restaurant, this is obviously important! Websites let customers browse your menu, learn delivery options, location, and history. This is also the perfect place to show off your delicious food.
For our doctors, this has less weight but is still important to let customers learn about the practice, the procedures available, and other information customers need to know.

Pretty much all of your customers will visit your website at one point or another. Don't let incomplete or vague information turn your potential customers to your competitor's customers.

Online Chat - has real-time transmission of text messages preferably on the business website

For websites that contain online chat this is considered and is a perfect chance to quickly answer any questions customers have.

This isn't typically considered for restaurants. Most restaurants won't have an online chat and they typically don't need one. It's more important for them to be responsive to phone calls and have a complete website.
This isn't typically considered for doctors. Due to variety of legal and other reasons, doctors don't usually chat through online chat features.

Online chat features are more important for mortgage brokers, real estate agents, and the like as these features are common in these professions. Again this go backs to the theme of paying attention to what your competitors have, what customers want, and what you offer.

Online Appointment - Ability to schedule an appointment through the website with appointment confirmation

This sub-category deals with online appointment. Not only does it take into account the ability to make an online appointment, but if the appointment was confirmed and how quickly it was confirmed.

If a restaurant takes reservations then this sub-category is considered, but otherwise it is not.
It has become the norm to be able to make online appointments for doctors so this typically holds weight. Usually doctors do not take walk-ins so an easy way to make appointments is very important!

This category is important for doctors, hair salons, lawyers, contractors... basically anyone who takes appointments! However it's not so important for restaurants.

Website Standard - The website is up-to-date and "stale" information is updated

Customers want to up-to-date information that is still relevant, not old and inaccurate information. It creates a huge hassle for both you and the customers to go through the process of getting the correct information. Plus, an updated website just looks better!

This is important for every business!

Customers don't want to have to dig to find correct or updated information. Keeping your website up-to-date looks professional and shows the customer that you care!

Emblem - The distinctive logo of the business

Arguably one of the most important part of branding is a logo. It is used to cement the business into the customer's mind. This is more important for businesses such as handymen, plumbers, electricians, contractors, etc.

For our restaurant, this has less weight than it would for a contractor but it is still considered and evaluated.
For our doctor, this typically holds little to no weight.

A distinctive logo is more important for contractors then it is for restaurants or a doctor, but it is still considered and should be given proper attention by all businesses.

Contact Information - Contact information is up-to-date and accurate

Customers will want to get in touch with businesses and nothing is more frustrating then calling a business you know is open to hear "Sorry this number is not active"

This is important for all of our businesses as customers need to get in touch with the business regardless if they are a restaurant, doctor, lawyer, and anyone else!

How are businesses going to get customers if there's no contact information?!

This is part of our due diligence! We want to make sure the businesses are not doing anything illegal. Plus, if a business cannot bother to keep these maintained, what else isn't maintained?

This is important for all businesses!

If a business cannot bother to keep these maintained, what else is not maintained? At Three Best Rated® we want to ensure the businesses we list are the cream of the crop! This includes making sure they have maintained all copyrights, licenses, and trademarks.

Acknowledgements - The business has been recognized through other ranking websites in their area

Being recognized by other ranking websites really shows a businesses excellence!

This is important for all businesses!

Having more acknowledgements really shows the business has been working hard and delivering the best products and services!

Welcome back to part 2 of the Three Best Rated® 50-point inspection explained! If you haven't seen it yet, you should really read part 1. There's not much to say other than diving right into the next three categories!

Our third category: Images

Images consists of three sub-categories

Business Images - authentic business images to help customers learn about the business before visiting

Pictures help customers get a feel for the business before they even step in the door! This helps the customers know which businesses they want to go with and what to expect.

For our restaurant, pictures are very important. First, customers can see the type of food that's being served (honestly if a restaurant doesn't have high-quality, appetizing pictures of food they are doing themselves a disservice! Nom nom nom!) Second, it helps customers to see the restaurant so they know what to expect when they walk in.
For our doctor, I would dare say having pictures is just as important. I've needed a number of doctors in my life and let me tell you, doctors that don't have pictures or really bad ones usually never made my short list. Why? I didn't feel as though they cared. If they don't care enough to get one nice head shot and one nice picture of the office, then how will I know they will care about me? Plus, it helps those pre-appointment jitters to know what to expect when I walk into the office.

Of course, a business can be great without great pictures. It just shows that extra attention to detail that makes a great business the best!

Fake Images - Pictures must be original with no fake images

While stock images have their place, representing them as your business images is not that place. 0 would be excessive use of fake images and 10 would be no fake images at all.

For our restaurant, there's really not a place for them at all. You should want to show off your food and your restaurant - not someone else's! Plus, customers have the expectation that the pictures you present will accurately represent your restaurant.
For our doctor, we like to see pictures of your practice and your office! We understand that it's not always possible to have pictures of your customers in the middle of an appointment, but trying to pass stock pictures as your own will result in less points (or no) being awarded.

It's always better to take some time and have high-quality professional pictures done!

Ownership Proof - Documents, licenses, permits, etc. proving business ownership

This is a standard check to make sure the business is what you say it is and everything is in order

For our restaurant, this encompasses the normal paperwork you need to own and operate a restaurant
For our doctor, if you own a clinic this will include the normal paperwork you need to own and operate a restaurant. However, this will also expand to ensure you have the proper education and licenses to act as a doctor.

As part of our commitment to our customers, we make sure our due-diligence is done. This allows us to provide up-to-date, accurate information!

Onward to our fourth category: Operating Hours

This category has only two sub-categories

Business Hours - Maximum working hours to benefit customers

Basically how long are they open?

This category is the same for both a restaurant and a doctor!

Having long operating hours almost always provides more value to the customer.

Less Operating Hours - Customers wants businesses to have longer operating hours as to make it more convenient for them.

For this one, if the business has shorter operating hours the business is assigned a lower amount of points

For our restaurant, there is no set amount of hours a business must be open to receive the maximum amount of points. Instead it is based on a comparison between it's competitors.
For our doctor, this is more relevant for doctors with more than one location. As the doctor splits their time between the various locations, it's important for us to award a higher amount of points for doctors who spend the majority of their time in the location we are listing.

Less operating hours differs depending on category, but it's always a good idea to see what your competitors are doing and what your customers want.

Moving onto the fifth category: Social Media

Social Media encompasses 3 sub-categories

Social Media Presence - Reputation on social media networks

I'm sorry for all the social media haters out there, it's here to stay. It is an excellent way to connect to past, current, and future customers as well as increase brand recognition. When used effectively social media can be an excellent tool!

For our restaurants this has more weight than our doctors. A social media page is a great way to put a "voice" to the restaurant and make it more relatable
For a doctor, having a social media page isn't as important as having a great website so we don't put a lot of weight into this one.

Overall social media is a great way to connect to your customers - as long as it's being used correctly of course!

Page Maintenance - regular announcements and updates to the social media page to make it unique and brand-worthy

An updated social media page is a happy social media page! Nobody likes to scroll across a page only to find out the last update was three years ago. It often makes the page look clunky and gives the impression that the business doesn't care.

No matter the business, if they have a social media page this category holds the same weight.

Some may argue that as long as you have a social media page you are right as rain, but unfortunately an outdated or abandoned social media page does more damage than not having one at all!

Followers Ratio - High follower-to-following ratio shows credibility and popularity

For social media a measure of success is the followers ratio. You want to have more followers than you are following. This shows actual interest in your page from people who like what you are putting out!

If a business has a social media page this category holds the same weight.

In the end, we use social media for one reason - to share things with other people. A high follower-to-following ratio shows that people are looking, and liking, what you are posting!

The Three Best Rated® 50-point Inspection Explained - Part 1

Welcome to the six part series of the Three Best Rated® 50-point inspection explained! There seems to be a great deal of confusion around our inspection and how it is used so I wanted to take the time to break it down and show the differences between how Three Best Rated would rate a restaurant and a doctor.

An Introduction

Our 50-point inspection uses indicators to pinpoint the best local businesses. Similar to how indicators will let you know which cities are the safest to live in or what universities result in high-paying jobs, our 50-point inspection lets you know which businesses are the best.

At Three Best Rated, picking the best businesses boils down to 50% algorithm and 50% our human employees. First, the algorithm will run it's magic and spit out a score. While we could be done here and just say "Hey this is what our machine told us," we know from experience that machines make mistakes. (Like when my coffee machine decided to auto-brew at 3 AM because the clock reset. Cold coffee = bad coffee. Fight me.) Our employees meticulously go through every category to ensure the algorithm was accurate. This is where the "handpicked" part of "handpicked using our 50-point inspection comes in."

Now, it's important to realize that as a business, you aren't being compared to every single business out there. Just the businesses within your category in your city. Every category and city has slightly different standards on what it means to be the best so to do a straight comparison would be ridiculous. In this same vein, a doctor and a restaurant have different requirements on what makes them great and as a result our 50-point inspection varies slightly from category to category to ensure accuracy.

A final note, since businesses are being compared to other businesses, you don't have to score a perfect score to be the best. A business should be reacting to customer feedback and needs, what their competitors are doing, and supply and demand. This means if you decide to not do something on the inspection, because nobody in your area cares about it and none of your competitors are doing it (because no one cares about it) then you won't be docked points. You will be given zero points and so will your competitors, and the things that matter will make the difference.

Bottom line if you're a business: Pay attention to your customers, competitors, and market, and react appropriately and the 50-point inspection will naturally factor these in.

Let's start with our first category: History

History is comprised of three sub-categories:

Experience - How many years of experience do they have in their craft

Usually a business that has had more experience will be able to provide higher quality services to their clients - after all, it's what they have been doing for years!

For our restaurant, it can be the years the business has been open and serving food.
Now, for our doctor, it would be how many years they have been a doctor and how many years of schooling they have.

Already I'm sure you can tell that's a little different from the restaurant category. This is because the 50-point inspection is dynamic and changes based on category. This ensures the list remains accurate. Remember experience is only one piece of the puzzle! Just because someone has more points in one area doesn't mean they are better than the other businesses listed.

Online History - How long has the business maintained an active online presence through websites and pages and how well they are kept track of.

With so much of our lives online, it's important that business are also online. This category says nothing about the looks or features of the website (that comes later) but simply the business has had a consistent online presence

For our restaurant, it would be the length of time they have had an online presence.
For our doctor, it's a little trickier as not every doctor will have their own unique web-page if they are working for a large hospital. However, most will have profile talking about them somewhere so that will be looked at. It usually doesn't hold much weight.

Overall, online history doesn't tend to hold a huge weight, but it is still considered.

Ownership History - This pertains to the type of business ownership (ex. family-owned, LLC, etc.) and how long has it been under that ownership

At Three Best Rated we believe that local businesses give the best services. While you will see some chain corporations on our website, rest assured that is taken into account here.

For our doughnut shop, it is pretty simple to determine the business ownership and how long it's been under that ownership and assign the appropriate amount of points.
For our doctor, it's a little bit trickier since many great doctors don't always work on their own private practice and work for large hospitals instead. It wouldn't be right to put a lot of weight in this category simply because they didn't want to own a private practice. While we typically believe that smaller clinics offer a better service experience, we understand that some doctors choose to go to larger hospitals because they feel that is where they can make the most difference; therefore, we typically don't put a lot of weight in this area.

Ownership History matters more to a restaurant then a doctor.

Moving onto our second category: Services

Services is made up of three sub-categories

Exact Services - This is how well the businesses specialize in their unique services. For example, a vegetarian restaurant serving meat isn't well-specialized.

When you are looking for a particular service, you want that service. Keeping that in mind, this typically holds more weight electricians, plumbers, etc.

Now restaurants typically will serve a wide variety of food with a focus on their core menu. For example, a pizza place might serve pasta as well. To harshly grade a restaurant on this criteria would be unfair. However, it is still considered. If that same pizza place served mostly pasta and only had one type of pizza, then they really aren't a pizza restaurant.
Doctors are typically very well-specialized. After all, they have to be trained in their particular specialization in order to practice in that area. The theory is if a doctor stretches themselves too thin, then they will struggle to provide top notch service in each area.

This category is more important for contractors, but is still considered for everyone.

Special Features - This refers to extra complimentary services to the customers.

Think free breadsticks at a restaurant or free vacuums at a car wash. We are in no way telling businesses they need to offer free things to get a high rating; instead, businesses need to look at their competitors and see what customers expect. For example, I expect a free coffee when I get my oil changed. I've never been in car repair shop that didn't have coffee. This category is more about making sure customer's expectations are met instead of encouraging businesses to start giving away free things.

For a restaurant, something as normal as free refills won't really make a difference in this category. Free breadsticks on the other hand... nom nom nom! We aren't telling the businesses to start giving away all their food away for free. Just keep in mind what your competitors are doing and what seems standard in the eyes of the customers.
For doctors, this category isn't really considered. When's the last time you went into a doctor's office and received a free check-up? Probably never. What about a lollipop? They keep telling me I'm too old for that. :(

Special Features is about making sure customer's expectations are met instead of encouraging businesses to start giving away free things. Keep in mind your customers, competitors, and market, and you'll do fine in this category.

Service Diversification - This encompasses the additional, but related, services offered.

Many places offer more than just their core services. For example, dog trainers may also offer dog sitting, house cleaning services may also deep clean carpets, estate planning lawyers may also deal with divorce. This allows a business to address a wider range of customer needs

For our restaurant, if they cover a related service (such as delivery) then it has a higher chance of being awarded more points
For our doctor, it all depends on the treatments they provide to patients!

As long the business offers a related service, they have a higher change of scoring well in this category. This category is all about addressing a larger number customer wants and needs!

Tips From Award-Winning Lawyers: How to Pick the Best Lawyer

When picking a lawyer, it can be difficult to know which one will be a perfect fit. A client needs to consider their needs and wants, then find a reputable lawyer that matches that. Easy right? Well, it's more like “easier said than done.” Between reviews, specializations, track records, and more it can be extremely easy to feel lost and confused. Three Best Rated® wants to help everyone feel a little less lost, and interviewed three award-winning lawyers to learn their tips on what a client should look for in a lawyer!

Specialization

When picking a lawyer, the client should look at what the lawyer specializes in and choose accordingly. “[For example,] a criminal law firm dedicated to criminal law – not as a combined family law firm and not as an add-on to a commercial law firm,” says Michael Perrella, founder of Perrella Legal. Many areas of law are highly specialized and require dedication to be competitive. “People should be wary of lawyers who dabble... [they should have] at least 10 years’ experience specializing in that field,” notes Mr. Perrella. Specializing in a field allows lawyers to be able to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses of particular cases that other lawyers might miss. “[For example] at Testart Family Lawyers we will give you an honest assessment of your case including its weaknesses,” says Marc Testart, founder of Testart Family Lawyers. Reputation

With a lawyer, reputation is important! There are lawyers with big egos, lawyers who put money first, and lawyers who love to put other lawyers down, so they can get the job,” says Michael Kuzilny, founder of MK Law, “Ring around and find someone that best suits your needs.”

Fees and initial consultations

While fees should not be the first thing a client looks for in a lawyer, it would be silly to not factor it in. Different lawyers have different pricing schemes and some will leave the client with a hefty bill at the end. “Look for someone who offers a fixed fee so there is no scope for overcharging,” advises Mr. Perrella. It's important to discuss payment, fees and budgets before signing a contract or hiring the lawyer. Usually a client can discuss this during the initial consultation. “A great lawyer will offer a free, no obligation initial consultation because they are confident about what they can achieve for you,” says Mr. Perrella. The initial consultation is also a great time to identify how the lawyer works and the attitude they have towards the case. “Be clear and organized about your situation, and explain what you are trying to achieve,” advises Testart, “Interview at least two or three [lawyers] and make your decision based upon their initial advice.”

Most people never imagine that they will need a lawyer, however it happens more and more often. People use different types of lawyers for a variety of needs. No single lawyer will be able to have all the technical and expert knowledge that each field of law requires. However, by specializing in one field a lawyer is able to gain the knowledge needed and understand the nuances of the particular field. What does this mean for their clients? Higher success rates! Three Best Rated® sat down with three award winning law firms to learn more about their respective specializations.

Family law encompasses divorce, child-custody disputes, adoptions, common law marriages and separations, and much more. Pretty much, if it involves the family, it involves a family law lawyer! Even in Court, family law operates differently then other areas of law. Of course, like other areas, clients must be prepped for hearings prior to Court so they know what is expected of them. “Unlike other areas of law, clients are expected to attend all Court cases,” says Machaalani. The consequences of failing to do so will depend on each particular case, but almost always gives the opposing side an advantage.

A typical case will start with drafting extensive representation. “[Extensive representations is a] detailed formal letter to the prosecution calling for the withdrawal of the proceedings or downgrading of the charge, and the basis for the request,” Nedim says, “This is often overlooked by lawyers to the detriment of clients, as they often lead to the speedy finalization for the cases.” Next, the lawyer will devise and implement an effective case strategy aimed at maximizing the potential of the case being withdrawn or thrown out. Lawyers will send a large amount of time preparing their clients for Court. “We... [provide] them with relevant guides depending on the type of case and what is likely to occur on the day,” explains Nedim, “For example, we provide character reference guides and guides for letters of apology to the Court... We also guide our clients to undertake various programs in the lead up to Court, depending on their particular situation.” Finally the key towards success? “Preparation, preparation, and more preparation; preparation is the key to maximizing the likelihood of achieving the optimal outcome,” says Nedim, “Sadly, many lawyers are criticized for adjourning cases from Court date to Court date, while doing very little in-between.”

When searching for a criminal defence lawyer, it's extremely important to look at their track record and the type of cases they typically deal with. The client will want to pick one that is familiar with their type of case and has a good track record. They also want to find a lawyer that is willing to put in the work in-between the Court dates. Behind the Brand: The Sacrifices Made to Build a Successful Business

Often times, customers have a hard time appreciating the sacrifices business owners put into their businesses. For a business owner, it's not a 9-5 job – it's their life. For these three award winning business owners, they know the sacrifices all too well.

Christina Katsouri-Paxinos and Constantine Paxinos are co-directors of PAX Migration, a migration firm in Adelaide, SA. Christina originally had a successful career as a teacher and coordinator of English to international students at university. She became interested in migration law after hearing the difficulty her students faced obtaining visas to Australia. When she started PAX Migration in 2013, Constantine originally joined to help her start her business, but soon found himself more and more interested in legal work and decided to join his wife in becoming fully-fledged migration agents.

When they started the business, they knew they wanted to focus on their clients. They invested a lot into their website initially to ensure it looked great, and contained useful information for their users. “We started the business with our home office and shared office in the city,” Constantine says “Sharing our office space meant we didn't' have to spend a great deal of money on accommodation and other overheads.” This allowed them to deliver a first class office experience, while keeping their cost low. “Eventually we grew into a full time office space, but we still utilize the shared office space so that our overhead cost remain variable,” Constantine explains, “Our clients also appreciate it as it allows us to keep our fees down.”

Christina and Constantine will both admit that being a migration agent hasn't always been easy. “The biggest struggle is navigating the changing landscape of the industry... Keeping up with the law and policy changes is a challenge, but not a serious issue as that's our core business,” Constantine says, “But our industry is very much immersed in the political world, and the whims of politicians and policy makers can be hard to predict.” When Christina, Constantine, and their two young children were packing for a well deserved week-long family vacation in 2017, the Prime Minister announced major changes to the employer sponsored visa framework without any prior warning. “These changes would take effect that night and would have major impacts on anyone who held or was going to hold an employer sponsored visa,” Constantine explained, “Thankfully there were only two [clients] that needed immediate attention.” They were able to contact the clients and advise them on the best course of action. While on a plane traveling to Queensland, Constantine had to have their assistant migration agent prioritize their application and prepare them. “After many phone calls after we landed, finally the visa applications were lodged at 10pm that night!,” he says, “The next day I had to make some phone calls to provide advice to clients as to what the changes would mean going forward, and after that it was a pretty good holiday!” Christina and Constantine has sacrificed more than just a peaceful vacation. “In [this] business you never really know how it is all going to pan out,” Constantine says, “There is a level of uncertainty that you have to become accustomed to otherwise it becomes too stressful.” He admits that sometimes he misses the comfort of a regular paycheck, but would never think about doing anything else.

Three Most Common Surgical Procedures to Give New Life to Joints and the Nervous System

Three Best Rated® sat down with three award-winning surgeons to learn about the three most common surgical procedures that give new life to damaged bones, joints and spines.

ACL Reconstruction

ACL Reconstruction, or Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, is performed in the knee joint to replace the torn anterior cruciate ligament with a surgical tissue graft (a semitendinosus tendon). “The knee joint has four major ligaments and two menisci. Among this, the anterior cruciate ligament injury is the most common ligament injury of the knee,” Dr. Prathmesh Jain explains. This ACL ligament can be injured through a common sports injury such as a high-velocity RTA or, less commonly, low-velocity twisting. “In India, many two-wheeler accidents lead to ACL injuries,” Dr. Prathmesh says. “A torn ACL makes the knee unstable and prone to injuries.” Physicians suggest to address the ACL injury within three months or it may result in further damage to the knee. Instability, locking, difficulty using stairs (specifically downstairs) are the most common symptoms for ACL ligament injury. When chronic ACL injuries are left untreated for a long time, it will lead to medial meniscal tears, whereas acute ACL injuries cause lateral meniscal injuries.

Once ACL reconstruction is done successfully, the chance of further injuries is reduced and makes the knee more stable and long-lasting. Astonishingly, most of the athletes are back to their sports shortly after surgery. In India, many desk-bound persons can also suffer from ACL injuries. “Lack of aerobic exercise and training may ... lead to joint injuries,” Dr. Prathmesh states. For a physically unfit person, it is essential to do some aerobic exercises and practice safe sports techniques to prevent injuries. If not, it may lead to weak quadriceps and hamstring muscles.

Minimally Invasive Total Knee Replacement

Total Knee Replacement, or Knee Arthroplasty, is performed to replace the damaged or worn surfaces of the knee with a prosthesis to relieve pain and increase mobility, allowing the patient to do everyday activities normally. Traditionally, a long vertical incision is used to view and access the joint for a knee replacement. However, minimally invasive total knee replacement takes a different approach. “The surgeon uses a shorter incision to expose the joints. It is a different and less-invasive technique, with the goal of reducing postoperative pain and speeding recovery,” Dr. Rajat Jangirstates.

Minimally invasive total knee replacement is not suitable for patients who are overweight, have already undergone any other knee surgeries, have significant knee deformities or have health problems that may slow the healing process. They may have a higher risk from this surgery. The physician will conduct a thorough evaluation and consider several factors in determining the suitability of the procedure with the person. A patient with a thinner and healthier body, as well as motivation to participate in the rehabilitation process, may be more suited for this type of surgery. “Minimally invasive knee replacement is one of the evolving areas and more research is needed on the long-term function and durability of the implants,” Dr. Rajat says. This surgery has many benefits including less damage to soft tissues, quicker healing, less pain and a faster recovery. A patient should always talk to their doctor before undergoing this procedure.

Microendoscopic Lumbar Discectomy Surgery

Lumber Discectomy is performed to remove a portion of a degenerative disc (herniated disk) in the lower back that can disturb or press the nearby nerve. This stress on nerves will create pain, weakness and numbness in the back, legs and arms. Complete rest, physical therapy and pain medication are common ways to deal with a herniated disk. However, for some, surgery may come as one of the best options. Whenever the patient experiences trouble standing, walking or difficulty doing everyday activities, the physician may recommend Lumbar Discectomy surgery as an option.

Discectomy is performed in two ways: Open Discectomy and Microdiscectomy. In the most common one, open discectomy, a small posterior incision is made in the back, or neck, and the degenerative disc portion is removed. In the modern Microdiscectomy, a thin tube is used to remove the disc through a smaller hole in the back. This thin tube has a microscope for visualization and better illumination, high-speed driller, Leksell Rongeurs and more. Building a house is a very exciting time for everyone involved. The homeowner is able to have the house designed exactly how they want it to look, with all the features and amenities they want. 5. Have Realistic Hair Goals

This is probably one of the most important tips out of all of them. “If you're planning to change your hair colour from dark to light, please be patient.” Victoria warns, “Nothing is worth jeopardizing the integrity of your hair.” Everyone knows a least one person who just couldn't wait to dye their hair blonde and ended up with frizzy, uneven-toned hair instead of silky platinum hair. It is extremely hard to recover damaged hair, but a lot easier to prevent the damage. “Most of the time, your goal will not be achievable in one session and it will cost a lot of money,” Victoria says. “You will thank your stylist when your hair is still healthy.”

Three Nails to Rock Your World

1. Bio Gel

“If you want a natural looking nail, bio gel is the way to go,” Mani N Nails says. Bio gel is also great for those who have weak or damaged nails due to the nutrients added to it. “[Bio gel] strengthens and promotes the growth of natural nails,” biosculpturegel.com says. Like UV gel nails, bio gel is cured through a UV light. According to biosculpturegel.com, it results in a strong but flexible nail. The downside? Bio gel nails can be fairly pricey.

2. Solar Gel and UV Gel

“This is a type of powder gel,” explains Mani N Nails. “They are stronger, but can still achieve a natural look.” Solar gel and UV gel nails are cured using a UV lamp and results in a strong, hard nail. It is usually more expensive but they cure faster than acrylic nails, according to Aprill Coleman of moreBEAUTY. “There is no odor, and gel nails can easily be removed with no damage to the nail bed by soaking in acetone,” Coleman adds.

3. Acrylic

“Acrylic is the cheapest in price and is made from powder,” says Mani N Nails, “This is a great option for customers that have a smaller budget.” Acrylic nails are the traditional fake nails everyone knows and loves. It typically is cured through air drying. Acrylic is a very strong substance, making it perfect for nails. “The biggest benefit of acrylic nails is durability,” Coleman states, “[however,] acrylics also emit a very strong smell during the application process.”

1. Teeth Whitening

It's true that no one naturally has perfectly white teeth; anyone with pearly white teeth uses teeth whitening procedures. “Over time, natural wear causes tiny micro-fractures to form [on your enamel],” says Dr. Andre Bisson of Bisson Dentistry. “These fractures trap pigments strains and other debris that can lead to discoloration.” Over-the-counter whiteners usually just don't cut it. “While they may be affordable, they contain very low levels of bleaching agents,” says Dr. Bisson. “They rarely help you to achieve the results you are looking for and often take a long time to even see a minor difference in the color of your teeth.” Instead, he recommends going to a local cosmetic dentist. This provides a much more natural appearance,” he says. “Porcelain is also stronger than composite resin and can last much longer.” Typically, veneers will take two visits, with a wait time of up to about two weeks in between. Some cosmetic dentists, like Bisson Dentistry, have the software and technology to do it in the office as a same-day procedure. “We take a digital impression of your mouth. The images ... provide us with exact one-to-one measurements,” Dr. Bisson says. “With the help of specialized software, we can custom design a perfectly fitting porcelain veneer ... As soon as the design is completed, the information is sent to an in-office milling machine, where your veneers are created.” Porcelain veneers also are stain resistant, won't irritate the gums and look almost identical to natural teeth.

3. Dental Bonding

Dental bonding a great alternative to porcelain veneers. It is used to cover minor imperfections such as chips, gaps, discoloration or misshapen teeth. “Dental bonding is one of the most affordable options for correcting imperfections in the teeth,” Dr. Bisson says. “The procedure is quick, often taking less than an hour to complete.” The dentist will clean and dry the tooth before putting an acid etch to the enamel. This creates a rough texture. After washing and drying the tooth again, they will apply the composite resin to the tooth. It is cured through a special light and buffed to give it a shine. “Dental bonding is the least-invasive restoration option and does not require any enamel to be removed from the surfaces of your teeth,” Dr. Bisson explains. “It will be able to stand up to most normal daily use.”

Three Mistakes to Avoid With an Estate

Any responsible person knows to plan for the worst while hoping for the best. Nobody wants to think about creating an estate plan and facing their own mortality until they are very old. However, it's the responsible thing to do. When someone passes away without an estate plan, it means they have no input to what happens with their possessions or money; the province will decide how the assets are distributed. This will lead to extra expenses and often takes a long time to resolve. Many people have never set up an estate plan and wouldn't know the first thing to do. This is why Three Best Rated® sat down with two award-winning estate lawyers and an award-winning financial advisor to learn three mistakes to avoid with an estate plan.

1. Not Having a Will

A person is (almost) never too young to have a Will. “[Many people think] they do not need to evaluate their estate for various reasons such as being young, healthy or even just procrastination,” says Justin Bussoli, an estate lawyer with Carr Law Personal Corporation. However, not having a Will needlessly causes extra time and money to be spent dealing with the estate. “It creates ambiguity and conflict surrounding the beneficiaries of an estate,” adds Joel Sinke, a financial advisor with Edward Jones. When a person passes, the last thing the surviving family members will want to think about is how the estate will be allocated; having a Will makes it so they don't have to worry and give them peace of mind they are acting according to the person's wishes. “First and foremost, a proper Will should always be included in your estate,” says Mark Epstein, the managing partner of Epstein & Associates.

2. Not Naming or Updating Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries are the people who will receive the inheritance once the client has passed away. “In most cases, named beneficiaries supersede the directives expressed in a will,” explains Sinke. Thus, even if the client changes their will to reflect their wishes, the inheritance could still end up in the wrong hands. “A mistake people make with their estate is if they have a Will, it doesn't reflect what they want to happen to their estate,” says Epstein. By regularly updating and reviewing beneficiaries, clients can be reassured that their estate is going to the right hands. “Often people don't properly plan for the death of beneficiary/attorney under a Will or Power of Attorney,” adds Bussoli. If a beneficiary passes away and the estate is not updated, then this can have unexpected consequences. “[This includes] the wrong person receiving an inheritance, unforeseen tax implications and estate having to go through Probate when this could have been avoided,” says Sinke.

3. Not Considering Taxes

“Taxes can be a significant estate expense,” says Sinke. However, they can be mitigated or even avoided altogether. “An effective estate plan and ... using life insurance as a means for planning for the tax burden can be useful in lowering the tax cost to an estate,” Sinke says. With taxes being such a large portion of estate expense it becomes even more imperative to follow the other guidelines above to have plenty of time to work through setting up the estate and Will. “We find people tend to inquire about [a Will and Powers of Attorney] at a time when it may be too late for us to help,” says Bussoli.

Overall, everyone should contact their estate lawyers and financial advisors to set up their estate plan before it is too late. As with most things, this process will take time and the sooner it is started, the better. Nobody wants to leave their loved ones behind with the headache of dealing with the estate and Will when all they should be doing is mourning. “People shouldn't be afraid of calling their lawyer because it's going to cost them money to speak to them,” says Epstein. “They should be more concerned with what the cost will be for failing to make that call.”

Jane Berry is the owner of Blueprint Home, a furniture store located in Ottawa, Ontario. Jane has always enjoyed the prospect of opening her own business. While attending university, she decided to make her dreams come true and opened her first business. She later decided to open Blueprint Home in 1999. She wanted to focus on a fresh and modern yet affordable style for her customers' homes. Jane decided on a boutique-style store to offer personal care and guidance with an experienced design team. She knew a home is at the heart of a person's life and wanted to help make the customer's furniture visions into a reality.

She has found that owning a business is filled with sacrifices. D avid Crane is the owner and founder of iBroken Canada, a phone and tablet repair service located in Calgary, Alberta. The idea to open a cellphone repair company came after he broke his own phone. David had previously owned an auto glass repair company and a window cleaning company so he was familiar with traveling to a customer's home to bring the service to them. “We started as a ... we come to you repair company,” David says, “I felt my idea of a mobile service for phone repair would be received well.” He worked hard to make his company a success. “I remember driving to customers' homes many nights past 9 p.m. to fix phones,” he says. “I remember fixing phones past 12 a.m.” His quality and dedicated soon spread through word of mouth and suddenly, iBroken Canada had three cars on the road before opening their first brick-and-mortar store in January of 2017.

iBroken Canada becoming a success wasn't easy. “There were many hard days,” David recalls. “With three cars on the road in a short time, it was prevalent that systems for inventory monitoring and route optimization were going to make or break the company. Many hours were spent testing software, coming up with a workflow and customer notifications on the status of their techs' arrival times.” He pushed through. For the first two years of the business, he was unable to take a salary. “Our family lived off my wife's income. I did not want to go into debt for the business, therefore, I reinvested 100 percent of the profits back into the business,” he says. He also refused to take a vacation for the first three years of the business. “Being self-employed looks glamorous on the outside, but it takes many years and a lot of hardship to make it really feel it was all worth it,” he says. David credits his work ethic and excellent customer service as the key parts of getting iBroken Canada off the ground. “My willingness to work hard non-stop got me referrals and repeat businesses,” he says. “It's a struggle making sure every staff member is trained on exactly how I take care of the customers and that the customers receive the same service every time and every day no matter what.” It is time well spent, however. “Without customer service and having our customers, the business would not exist,” he says.

Very early into their existence, they had their MPI accreditation suspended for 90 days. “We billed the insurance company for a part of a customer's vehicle that was on back order and actually turned up being obsolete,” Jim explains. “We explained it to the insurance provider and supplied call records for all the attempts we made to try and find the part. They decided this would be considered insurance fraud and they suspended our accreditation for 90 days.” Despite this setback, InterCity Autobody continued to grow due to Jim's ability to learn from his mistakes and adapt. Owning a successful auto body shop hasn't been easy. “As a small business owner, you wear all of the hats all of the time at your business,” Jim says. ”The high times can be pretty enjoyable and the low times can almost break you.”

Three Best Rated® sat down with three business owners - Solomon Nordine of Complete Accounting Solutions, Joe Torbica of Tesla Computers and Shilpa Burad of Panda Flowers - to listen to their stories of what it takes to be a top-rated company.

Solomon Nordine is the president of Complete Accounting Solutions. Looking at him today, it's hard to see anything but a successful public accountant. However, like everyone, Solomon had to claw his way up to the top.

For Solomon, it all started with simply enjoying learning about businesses. He was fascinated at the thought of being employable by everyone in the world. “I was encouraged by my CGA father to become an accountant,” he recalls fondly. “Originally, I wanted to be an offshore accountant but after working in the public practice and saving people money on their taxes, I decided to work locally instead.” Solomon started as a controller during a slow period. He was starting from scratch, but he was determined to make his name known by saving his clients money. “By taking extra time to analyze potential tax savings and prior period adjustments, I ended up with happy clients that were more than willing to tell other people about me. My website also started to draw in business and by saving people money, I kept growing through referrals,” says Solomon. “By the third year, I needed two employees just to keep up with my referral growth.” Solomon has been incorporated since 2003 and operating as Complete Accounting Solutions since 2007.

Business hasn't always been easy, however. “[The hardest day of my business was] when our initial win at the B.C. Supreme Court to keep the word 'Professional' in our designation was overturned on appeal by CPABC,” Solomon recalls. They kept fighting and were able to get clarification of the final order in their favor. “We were able to re-brand the designation to Public Business Accountants and keep the PBA designation active in B.C.,” explains Solomon. “In the end, it was well worth defending the designation, but it would have been nice to avoid the hassle.” Even now, Solomon continues to make sacrifices for his business. “I've worked long hours, reinvested profits and taken additional programs so I can offer clients tax shelter services,” Solomon says. “Doing so may have increased my costs upfront, but it was well worth it in the long run.” He also goes the extra mile to resolve potential conflicts and issues to ensure his clients are given the best experience he can give. Solomon wants to continue to grow his business, but not for himself. He wants to grow his business for everyone that needs his services. “I would like to help everyone, [but] we need to prioritize the corporate small businesses,” Solomon says. “We're constantly hiring so we still take on small files by referrals, but I would like to get back to a position where we can take on nearly everyone that wants to use our services.”

Before opening Tesla Computers in 2007, he worked as a computer technician for a big corporation to build his skills.

Joe found out opening a business was no easy feat. “In the beginning, I was spending a lot of money for advertising and trying to find ways to bring the customers to my shop,” he says. “My first customer came in to repair their computer and they left happy.” That was the start of Tesla Computers' great reputation. “I always gave a good warranty for service and I make sure every customer is happy with our services and products,” he says. With that, Joe unlocked the key to a successful business.

It hasn't always been easy, however. “My biggest struggle is trying to keep the customers happy,” Joe admits. “A few years ago, a customer returned a computer purchased in my shop multiple times. He was trying to claim warranty because his kids physically damaged the PC and that isn't covered in the warranty. I fixed it anyway, without any problems, in hopes that he will send his family and friends to my business.” In his quest to provide excellent customer service, Joe has also made sacrifices. “I sometimes have to try and leave other jobs to help customers who need their computer fixed immediately,” he says. “Many times, if it's only a little issue, I won't charge them to make sure they come back.” This can cost him a lot of money up front, but it's worth it when the customer does come back and even refers their friends and family.

Shilpa Burad always had a mind for the arts and creativity. She always knew she wanted to do something art-related, but couldn't figure out what. She completed her education in the arts and went on to learn digital media to help her husband make architectural walk-throughs. In 2005, they took a big leap and immigrated to Canada in 2005. With two kids to raise, Shilpa decided to take a break from the digital media world. However, her close friend Sonal Raje, an artist, inspired her to pursue floristry. She completed her diploma from the Canadian Institute of Floral Design and hasn't looked back since. “Working with flowers is a delicate affair,” she says. “It's a labor of love.”

Shilpa worked as a florist for some nationally renowned shops in Toronto before she moved to the wild west (a.k.a. Alberta). She worked with a dozen floral shops before the owners of Panda Flowers decided to retire and were trying to sell their business. Shilpa jumped at the chance and started her first flower shop. She would soon realize that owning her own shop wouldn't be all roses and daisies.

The first struggle Shilpa had to contend with was how her shop could stay viable in the age of the internet. Many consumers where moving to online competitors. “We had to understand the ever-changing buying trends of the current generation and invest dollars where most traditional shops wouldn't even think of,” she explained. There's a lot riding on a successful Valentine's Day, for the shop and the customers. The past Valentine's Day was one of the hardest Shilpa had experienced. “We had hired three delivery companies to deliver flowers to three different areas of the town,” Shilpa recalls. “One of the delivery companies did not show up and we had to create an entire family and friends delivery crew within a matter of hours.” It was a very challenging and trying Valentine's Day for Panda Flowers, but it was worth it in the end. “It did end well with some really satisfied smiles,” Shilpa says. “And we learned a valuable lesson about the importance of delivery companies for flower shops.” She knows there will always be challenges and hard days, but there's always a lesson she can learn, too.

How to Find a Great Contractor and What Materials They Recommend

A home is a place to feel safe and secure, warm and cozy, loved and happy. People continually improve their homes to capture those feelings. However, what started as a loving home improvement project, can quickly turn into a nightmare. Everyone has heard horror stories about bad contractors, poor quality materials and finding out years later – when the work is out of warranty, of course – that the homeowners were lied to and deceived. This is why it's always important to find a reputable contractor to work on the house and to know what materials the professionals recommend for a long and reliable life of the project. Three Best Rated® teamed up with award-winning garage door contractor The Garage Door Depot, award-winning security system installer Protection Plus Inc. and award-winning roofing contractor All Star Roofing to learn how to find great contractors and what systems/materials they recommend.

Do The Research

Sorry folks, there's no magical way of getting out of having to do research. “[You should] check credentials, disciplinary history and reviews from a variety of sites and sources,” Rob Miller of The Garage Door Depot says. For many home improvement projects, contractors will need special training, licenses or experience to know how to do the repairs correctly and legally. An unlicensed contractor may be able to make the repair cheaply, but the price will be paid in lower-quality materials, incorrect installations or even making the problem worse. This can be especially important when paying for deposits for the work or products. “Be sure your contractor has a license to accept deposits and is bonded. In Alberta [where The Garage Door Depot is located], this is called a Prepaid Contractor License,” warns Miller. “You would be surprised how many contractors do not possess this.” Lastly, reviews are king and a good contractor will have positive reviews all across the board. Looking at a variety of sources means there's less chance of review censorship (which, of course, a great contractor will never do).

Get Multiple Bids (and do even more research)

A bid in the simplest terms is a quote. “Get multiple bids/quotes and get educated,” Miller says. “Be sure when comparing quotations that what is being considered is truly comparable.” That's where the do more research part comes in. The client should make sure that the quality, durability, performance and lifespan are all comparable. The cost over time should be factored as well. By dividing cost over expected life span, the client can get an idea of how much they are paying per year for the life of the project. In the end, it could cost more per year to go with a cheaper option than the more expensive option. Also, a more expensive but better-performing piece of equipment may be worth the extra money. A home is a long-term investment and it's worth spending a little extra money to make sure it lasts. In the end, compare apples to apples, not to oranges.

The Price is Not Everything

As with most things, the price only paints a portion of the picture. Supply and demand can be very tricky to get exactly right, so the price probably doesn't encompass all the benefits and all the costs for the customer. “Consider the contractor and what value they and their products bring to you,” Miller advises. The customer should consider how comfortable they are with the contractor – after all, they are inviting them to their home. If the customer feels uneasy, it may be a sign to find a different contractor. Value also encompasses support services, warranties and other programs the contractor may have.

Have a Contract

A contract is used to protect both the customer and the contractor. “This can ensure the contractor fulfills their duties to you,” Miller says. The contractor should want a contract, especially if they only accept money at the end of the job, as this protects them from non-payment. A contract also is physical evidence that the work was promised and money changed hands, which can be useful in a fraud case. It is always a good idea in any part of life to have a hard paper trail. The client should make sure they receive a copy of the contact. If the contractor refuses, it might be time to cut ties.

DIY is Not a Good Idea

There's a reason why contractors exist. They possess a skill-set most people do not have. “The dangers of DIY garage door repair are numerous and should be taken seriously before you engage in a project,” Miller warns. This is not a sales pitch, but a real and genuine warning. The parts on a garage door are under tremendous pressure and have a lot of potential energy stored. A wrong move while attempting to DIY can and has been fatal.

When picking a contractor, many different factors have to be considered. One contractor isn't perfect for everyone, so each individual's needs and wants will have to be considered. In the end, a client should feel comfortable and confident in their choice. After all, it's their home that hangs in the balance.

If the electrical system isn’t inspected annually, or ever, there’s a higher risk of the system failing. At best, it will leave the house without power for an indeterminate amount of time. At worst, it can lead to devastating fires.

Of course, homes don’t always operate on neat little schedules and there may be signs that the electrical system needs to be checked by a certified electrician before the annual check-up. Lara’s warning signs are:

A breaker or fuse repeatedly trips
Parts of your home are experiencing brown outs or intermittent brightening and dimming of the lighting
Your electrical panel is making a buzzing sound and is warm to the touch or smells like burned plastic (this is an emergency; call an electrician ASAP)
Someone gets a shock off an appliance, switch, or receptacle
Power is interrupted to a circuit (multiple receptacles/switches)
Power is interrupted to a single receptacle (kitchen, workshop, pumps)
A switch does not appear to control any electrical device, or controls a device improperly

A home is at a greater risk for an electrical problem if it is older. “The older your home, the higher the probability that wiring has been added after it was originally wired,” explains Lara, “Many times, these wiring additions have not been done safely or professionally.” It becomes even more important to watch out for warning signs and have the home inspected annually. Electricity is just too important for modern society to ignore the system’s general health and well-being.

Now for an often under-appreciated part of modern society, plumbing. Imagine how life would be

without plumbing. Without going into specifics, let’s just say it would smell bad. Luckily, plumbing does exist and there’s a lot a homeowner can do to make sure their plumbing system is happy! “We recommend regular drain cleaning/snaking of your drains to ensure no build-up of materials which causes blockage,” says Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain. Blockages are very common and can be caused by a lot of different things. “The most common issue we find is having blocked drains,” Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain says. “This is caused by... roots in drains, collapsed pipes, blocked toilets due to using wipes and paper towels, or kitchen drains being blocked because of grease.”

Some of those issues are harder to control such as the collapsed pipes, but others are easy to avoid by keeping the happiness of the home and plumbing system in mind! For example, never throw anything in the toilet that isn’t toilet paper. Even the flush-able baby wipes aren’t great for the plumbing. Toilet paper has been made to work in harmony with the septic system, while paper towels and the like are made to be sturdier when wet and thrown in the trash. “A common thing people do which harms their plumbing system is flushing too much grease down the kitchen drains,” Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain adds. Grease can easily coat the pipes, cause debris to stick to it, and thicken. This will eventually lead to blockages.

If a homeowner finds they deep-fry a lot of food, they should buy a jar and some cheese cloth. When the oil cools, they can use the cheese cloth to easily strain the oil into the jar to save for another day. When the oil starts to smell and becomes dark, it is easy for them to pour the jar into the trash. If a homeowner cooks a lot of fats, such as red meat, they can let the fat sit in the pan until it solidifies and hardens, then simply scrap it into the trash. Alternatively, they can also pour it into a jar and scrap it into the trash at a later time.

If the sink does end up getting clogged, don’t panic. “Identify the cause of the clog. Using a soft utensil like a spoon or rubber straw, gently probe the clog,” says Vesna Kolakovic of Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Mississauga, ON. “If an oily residue is left on your tools, it’s likely you are dealing with a fat-based clog. If the clog feels solid, you probably have a piece of food waste or another small object blocking your drain.” If it’s a solid object, a wire hanger should do the trick. If there’s any difficulty removing the clog, it’s best to call the plumber. If it’s a fat-based clog, hot water will do the trick. “Begin by boiling a large pot of water on the stove. Turn off the heat and let it cool for about two or three minutes,” Vesna says. “Carefully pour the entire pot down the sink drain.” The process can be repeated a number of times. However, if the clog does not go away, it’s time to call the plumber.

For both the electrical system and the plumbing, always proceed with caution. Always remember that these systems are sensitive and can easily hurt someone if mismanaged. It’s always a good idea to call the professionals before attempting a DIY project or if there are any questions.

Fiberglass shingles

The best roof for the lowest price will have to go to fiberglass shingles. Almost every single manufacturer makes fiberglass, so the customer will have a lot of options to pick the color and style they like. “They are affordable, quick to install, and easy to repair,” Mike Cheema of Busy Boys Roofing Ltd. explains. This roof is the best for a household on a budget. However, make sure you hire a reputable roofing company! “Every fiberglass shingle has a nailing zone,” Cheema explains. “If the installer puts nails outside the zone then over time it can start leaking, and with heavy wind it can be blown away.”

Synthetic underlay

Before installing the shingles, a roofer will put an underlay on. This helps give the roofs an extra level of protection that can’t be achieved with shingles alone. There are many different types of underlays available, with the two most common being felt paper and synthetic. “We... insist on using a synthetic underlay as opposed to felt paper,” said Kelly Matthews of Alpineroofs.ca. “Synthetic underlay carries a 20-year warranty, where felt paper has none. If you read the warranty specs for singles, the manufacturers require this product to be used to have a valid shingle warranty.” Also, synthetic underlays are more weather resistant than their felt paper counterpart.

Gutter Guard

While worrying about the shingles, many people often neglect to think about another important part of the roof – the gutters. A gutter guard is a simple solution to help keep leaves, sticks, and other debris out of the gutters. “This saves you precious time and money,” says Certified Roofing & Exteriors, “and will also prevent rusting of the troughs, maintaining beauty and extending the life of your investment.” A gutter guard helps homeowners by keeping the gutters clean, which will in turn help direct water away from the house.

Flat Roof (torch on)

A flat roof is made of 2 or more layers that is sealed using a gas torch (hence, torch on). It is popular with a lot of industrial buildings and modern buildings. “It’s waterproof, designed for all climates as it expands in heat and contract in the cold,” says Cheema. “This gives it a long lifespan.” This roof is great for places that experience all four seasons, all while giving the house a modern look. However, it can quickly get very expensive as it requires extra training for the crew and increased insurance cost. This roof can balance that out with its versatility and long life span.

Hot Dipped Nails

Everything on a roof, even down to the nails, are vitally important. “We use hot dipped nails,” Matthews says. “This may seem like a small difference, but it is actually important.” Hot dipped nails are made by dipping nails into molten zinc. The result is a stronger, rust-resistant nail. “If any moisture gets into the attic... regular nails will rust, then the heads can literally pop off,” explains Matthews. By using hot dipped nails, the nails will no longer rust and remain more viable for the roof’s lifespan.
