Here, There, Be Dragons, and The Search for the Red Dragon, the first two novels in the The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica series by James A. Owens, are being adapted into screenplays by The Gotham Group.

The story follows adolescent versions of novelist J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams after they find a map that reveals the secret locations of Myths and Legends, leading the boys on a series of quests where they encounter imaginary and real people such as King Arthur, Captain Nemo, Peter Pan, H.G. Wells, J.M. Barrie, Don Quixote and Harry Houdini.

I had never even heard of the novels before today, but they sound like an interesting read that were aimed towards young adults, but might just be mature enough to scratch any itch for myth and legend lovers. This definitely sounds like a project worth paying attention to.

5. Apocalypse Now - 1979 - Francis Ford Coppola - Vietnam - Army, Navy

The post traumatic stress we experience every time we watch Apocalypse Now speaks highly of the tone of the movie. From the openeing scenes of Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) attempting to adjust to life off the front lines to the shots of surf obsessed Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore's (Robert Duvall) men surfing a partially secured beach, Apocalypse Now never really lets you catch your breath. By the time Willard reaches his assasanation target, rogue Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando), the viewer has experienced the same trip to the brink of madness that the main characters of the film have already traveled as soldiers fighting a non-winnable war deep in the jungles of Vietnam. Apocalypse Now should, in many peoples opinion, be ranked much higher on U.S. War movie list, but the "Raging Bull" of War movies snail-like pace and stubbornness to release any of the tension that builds as the plot develops caused us to drop this marathon of a movie into the bottom half of our list.

4. Platoon - 1986 - Oliver Stone - Vietnam - Army

Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a a former College student turned Army Rifleman fighting near the Cambodian border in Vietnam who finds himself on the left wing side of a Civil war between two senior Squad Leaders that had been brewing long before he had arrived. The film follows him as the jungle transforms him from a green replacement solider to a seasoned veteran. Oliver Stone based some of the events of Platoon on his real life experiences of fighting and surviving the Vietnam War. The soldiers of Bravo Company were not only fighting the North Vietnamese, they were also battling the elements of their surroundings and the constant infighting that came with trying to survive the horrific reality that was there day to day life and doing your best not to leave your mind in the Jungle. If it were not for Apocalypse Now, Platoon would be by far the best Vietnam movie ever made.

3. Saving Private Ryan - 1998 - Steven Spielberg - WWII - Army
The recreated Invasion of Normandy is hands down the best battle sequence ever filmed. Historical inaccuracies aside, Saving Private Ryan delivered a heart wrenching semi-true story and made you thankful you were never asked to storm a beach over run with dug-in Germans. The detachment of Army Rangers Saving Private Ryan follows is one of the best ensemble casts ever in a War film ever and their selfless journey to re leave the last of four enlister brothers is unforgettable. Easily the best "War Sequence" film on this list, it could have been the #1 War movie if Stanley Kubrick did not have such a twisted take on Vietnam and if Patton weren't actually based on the outrageous real life exploits of Gen. George Patton.

2. Patton - 1970 - Franklin J. Schaffner - WWII - Army
There is nothing more satisfying than an historically sound war movie, and that is exactly what you get from Patton. Staring with his Campaign in North Africa, following him up through Sicily, and finishing with his 3rd Army re-leaving the 82nd Airborne at the Battle of the Bulge and eventually busting through Germany's "Western Wall" Patton shows you every side of the eccentric General that wasn't afraid to speak his mind or under-mind his superiors. Some of the battle sequences seem a little dated but you barely notice because of the highly quoted script and excellent portrayals of General George S. Patton (George C. Scott) and General Omar Bradley (Karl Malden). Not forgotten, but definitely under-appreciated, Patton ranks at #2 because of it's Historically accurate take on one of the most important and intriguing American Army Generals of all time.

1. Full Metal Jacket - 1987 - Stanley Kubrick - Vietnam - Marines
Based on the Novel The Short-Timers by Gustav Hasford, the story goes from bad to worse as the protagonists move from Parris Island Marine Corps recruit training to the front lines of the Tet Offensive. The physiologically draining training sequences of the soon to be Marines being verbally berated by their over-bearing Drill Instructor are hard to digest, let alone forget. Kubrick danced a fine line of genius/madness when he directed this iconic War film, and he makes his viewer feel the walk the same line by the time the end credits roll. The pure insanity of war fell into Kubrick's wheel house, resulting in the best combination of Battle Sequences/Story/Historical Accuracy/ film viewers have ever seen. The fog of war atmosphere created by Full Metal Jacket leaves you questioning what it is exactly you just watched and necessarily not wanting to remember.

REVIEW: Shutter Island

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio team up for the third time (Gangs of New York, The Departed) in Shutter Island, a genre movie about a U.S. Marshall searching a remote Mental Hospital.

We are big fans of both the Actor and Director here at TBR, but this effort, meant to be a "mind-bender", was unenthusiastic, slow, and worst of all, predictable.

Gangs of New York and The Departed were much more entertaining and better paced than Shutter Island, so that makes 2/4 quality movies for the team of Scorsese and DiCaprio. Hopefully they work together again because we would hate for this to be the last movie the pair make together. Who knows, maybe this one is going to be better on DVD?
