If I Knew Then What I Know Now: Blogger Conference For the Newbie

Are you a blogger headed to your very first blogger conference this year? If so, two words:

business cards. Business cards are a blogger conference must and make sure to have lots of them on hand.

I attended my first blogger conference last year and brought 100 business cards with me. I thought I had more than enough. However, I handed out most of them by the end of the first day and spent the next day handing out the remaining cards sparingly...very sparingly. Blogger conferences are a great way to meet bloggers and make connections with companies - large and small - and a well designed business card is a great way to leave a lasting impression.

Besides having plenty of business cards, you should also plan early. If you are planning on attending a major conference you should begin planning way ahead of time. Many blog conferences offer special early bird conference pricing and some even offer volunteer opportunities for bloggers who respond early. Check out some of the blogger forums, Facebook and Twitter to connect with other bloggers who are attending the conference. Last year, I saw several bloggers looking to sell their conference tickets because something came up. I was even more amazed to see how many bloggers used blogger forums and Twitter to find roommates to cut down on conference expenses.

Lastly, realize your value as a blogger and a means of promotion. Last year, I had no idea how to get sponsors but a simple internet search and voila, I found several companies I partnered with earlier in the year that were looking for a blogger to represent their company at upcoming blogger conferences. You never know UNLESS you ask. Update your promotion package and use those marketing skills you've gained while blogging. Companies realize the power of the blog and how it reflects in their bottom line. An appearance at a major blogger conference could result in huge profits.

Yea, if I knew THEN what I know now I would have packed more business cards, started planning a little earlier and began getting sponsors a little sooner.

Safe Winter Driving Tips from #Esurance

With daffodils blooming in my backyard and tips averaging in the low 60s, it doesn't really seem like Winter here in the South. However, I've lived here long enough to know that Old Man Winter is coming and it's best to be prepared. I spend a lot of time driving - for work and personal - and I know the importance of being prepared for hitting the roads no matter what season it is, but exercising extra caution during the Winter when the potential for snow and ice may occur.

I found a ton of Safe Winter Driving Tips on the Esurance blog site and hope these tips will prove helpful should Old Man Winter make an unscheduled appearance in your town.

Winterize Your Car: Your car has different needs during the winter time. Check with your local mechanic to see if an oil change is needed and make sure you have ample tread on your tires. This will help grip the road during icy, snowy or rainy weather.
Slow it down: Whether it's ice, snow or rain, slowing it down is one of the easiest ways to stay safe on the road. If other drivers are zooming past you, don't worry, just pull over to the far right lane and maintain a speed that feels comfortable for you.
Check the Spare: Spare tires get little love until we get a flat but you need to make sure your spare tire is properly inflated. I had a friend who had a flat tire and when he went to change the tire discovered his spare tire was flat. So next time you visit your local warehouse club store stop by the auto department and have your tires checked...ALL of them including your spare.
Tow Insurance: Does your car insurance offer towing? If not you may want to add towing coverage to your policy during the winter months. Many dealers offer Emergency Roadside Assistance / towing packages with the purchase of a new car, but more and more dealers are offering Emergency Roadside Assistance on used car purchases as well. Also, check with your auto insurance carrier to see if they offer Emergency Roadside Assistance.
Winterize Your Trunk: Time to remove the sandals and sand buckets from the trunk and replace them with a blanket and boots. I usually keep a small blanket in my car at all times, but during the winter we have a thermal blanket that we keep tucked in the trunk just in case. You never know when you'll need that extra source of heat. Like the time we were stuck on I-40 just outside Nashville. A snowstorm had come through and traffic came to a halt. After a while Hubby realized the cars and trucks in front of us weren't moving and we saw people exiting their vehicles to go play in the snow. We waited thinking the traffic would move soon and the kids started to get anxious so we turned the car off and let the kids play in the snow. After a while the kids started to get cold and fortunately we had our thermal blanket in the trunk. We got some fresh socks out of our luggage bags and put the old wet socks in the trunk and grabbed the thermal blanket to cover the kids in the back and waited for traffic to move again.

The Sigh Book Review and Giveaway

The Sigh is a fable from Marjane Satrapi, the accomplished author behind the international bestseller, Persepolis (the honest and moving story of a girl escaping a turbulent Iran during the Islamic Revolution).

The Sigh follows Rose, one of three daughters of a rich merchant who always brings gifts for his girls from the market. One day Rose asks for the seed of a blue bean, but her father fails to find one for her. She lets out a sigh in resignation, and her sigh attracts the Sigh, a mysterious being that brings the seed she desired to the merchant. But every debt has to be paid, and every gift has a price, and the Sigh returns a year later to take the merchant’s daughter to a secret and distant palace.

The story is a vivid fairytale, packed with vibrant artwork and a timeless moral about the magic of childhood.

My Thoughts: We enjoyed reading The Sigh, the story is one filled with allegorical references that an adult will appreciate and a story line simple enough to entertain an upper elementary school-aged child. The illustrations are simple and intricate and compliment the story very well. Although The Sigh is a fairytale it is dark and deep but makes for a suspenseful read. There is definitely a message to the story and hopefully one readers will grasp and appreciate. I enjoyed this book and it was interesting enough that one of Los Tres Amigos shared it with his class during Share & Tell.

The Meerkat Wars by H.S. Toshack Book Review

Sheena is a clever and cheeky little black-and-white cat who secretly stows away (again) in the Allen Family’s Land Rover when they set off on safari to Baragandiri National Park.

Her adventures begin when she helps to rescue Pebble, a young meerkat who has been stung by a scorpion. She befriends Pebble’s tribe, the Duwara, then finds they are fighting a vicious war with the Utongo, who hold the territory on the other side of The Gorge – a deep and terrifying valley cutting this part of Baragandiri in two.

Each tribe believes it lives under The One True Sun, the sun they see on their own side of The Gorge. Sheena decides that the only way to help them is to prove that there is only one sun, and that both tribes share a common belief and a common future. To do that she must persuade the tribes’ leaders, Tuft and Slash, to come with her on a dangerous journey around the end of The Gorge.

Our Thoughts: Sheena's adventures begin when she takes a ride with Mr. Allen, unbeknownst to him. Sheena journeys to various parts of Baragandiri National Park. Along the way she meets a menagerie of animals we'd probably see if we were to journey to the Baragandiri National Park including our favorite, Spickle the Porcupine. Hoshack does a wonderful job bringing the animals of Baragandiri National Park to life. Each has a distinctive personality and a specific role in Sheena's journey.

The book seems to capitalize on the popular series "Meerkat Manor", which fueled a huge interest in the highly sociable animal. However, the sheer wit of a common house cat in his new surroundings away from all things familiar makes for quite a good read.

Prepare to expand your vocabulary as you try to pronounce many of the words in The Meerkat Wars. Trust me it was quite a feat at times. However, not such a task that it detracted from the story in any manner but this is definitely something to consider if you plan on gifting this to a new reader. It's a testament to the continent Hoshack once called home. This book is probably one best read in a small group or perhaps as a tale you can share with your child(ren).

In the Land of Darkness by C.S. Lakin

Author C.S. Lakin is back with The Land of Darkness, the 3rd installment in her The Gates of Heaven book series.

In this story "Twelve-year-old Jadiel is forced by her evil stepmother to fetch the rejuvenating leaves from the Eternal Tree by next full moon or her father will be killed. On her journey, she encounters Callen, her uncle's apprentice, a young man looking for a mysterious bridge. Together they chase after confusing clues, which lead them into danger and ultimately the treacherous Land of Darkness. In the end, they find more than they are looking for. The Land of Darkness is a fairy tale rich in biblical allegory and points to the bridge that links the mortal with the immortal life—one that can be seen only with eyes of faith."

Our Thoughts: The middle of Los Tres Amigos has taken quite a liking to Lakin's books. He enjoyed reading The Map Across Time [check out our review here] and once the latest edition arrived he immediately began reading it.

Lakin's story brings to mind C.S. Lewis and the Chronicles of Narnia series, yet there is a spiritual aspect to her tales that seems to distinguish her from C.S. Lewis. The story is appropriate for early teens and the characters are well defined. Jadiel and Callen embark on a path full of action and readers will love immersing themselves into this magical world. Like the previous books in the series In the Land of Darkness is full of Biblical allegories. It's an adventurous tale which will keep readers captivated from cover to cover anticipating Lakin's next entry in the series.

Upon reading the first few pages the story of Cinderella comes to mind. We have poor, little Jadiel living with her dad, stepmother and two step sisters. However, a few pages later any similarities between the two quickly disappeared. Jadiel is a very headstrong character and when matched with Callen, the brother of a character from an earlier tale, a perfect pair ensues.

In the Land of Darkness is a great read and one I'm sure you and your early teen reader is sure to enjoy.

Just when I thought I had discovered every single last succulent EdenFantasys bubble bath, I chanced upon Cake Beauty Products "it's a slice" duo. The "it's a slice" duo gift set has earned a spot on my favorite EdenFantasys bubble bath product list. It's a little orange-ey, a little vanilla-ish and a whole lotta sweet.

The bubble bath creates a ton of huge, frothy, long-lasting bubbles that lasts akk the way through a long, long soak and the scent is like taking a bath in cake. I guess I stand corrected as calling this product a mere bubble bath is an injustice. It's described as a "Supremely Rich Bath and Shower Froth" and I cannot think of a more apropos description. According to Car and Driver , texting while driving is more dangerous than driving under the influence* and those who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash**. Then Sings My Soul Book Review

The long-awaited third installment! In 2003, Robert Morgan released what would become a future classic for over a million readers, a unique book entitled Then Sings My Soul. This collection of the world’s greatest hymns and the stories behind them stirred an entire generation to better understand the heritage of our faith through song.

Now, in the long-awaited third volume of this series, Morgan expands his material to include the great history of worship, the first biblical hymns, biographical sketches of the most interesting composers, and almost 60 generations of hymn singing. The new book also includes a collection of the greatest hymns you’ve never heard, with lead-sheets included.

All of this is in addition to even more standard hymns and the stories of the composers behind them.
Morgan’s conclusion guides the reader into enjoying all of God’s music, blending the old and the new into a symphony of praise that keeps the worship alive for a new generation.

My Thoughts: As a member of our church choir and a lover of hymns, I am always curious of the origin of some of the songs. It's hard for me to list a favorite story because there are so many to choose from. Then Sings My Soul books appeal to me on so many levels. For example, the historian in me appreciates the deep history of some of these songs dating back to the late 1600s. The musician in me loves the inclusion of sheet music for every song and the the Bible lover in me loves the biblical tie-in to the songs we love. I also loved the Index of first lines at the back of the book which makes it easier to search the story behind your favorite hymn.

There are two other books in the series and much like the current book they are informative and quite enjoyable. This would make a thoughtful gift for your church musician or choir member or any lover of hymns.

General Mills Whole Grain Cereal #MyBlogSpark Giveaway

Cereal is a sure fire way to keep on the right track to healthier living and ringing in the New Year often means new eating habits. Changes to the Dietary Guidelines recommend choosing products with a whole grain listed as the first ingredient and now every cereal with the white check has more whole grain than any other single ingredient with the same great taste. When you see “Whole Grain” as a part of the first ingredient on the ingredient list, indicating that whole grain is the first and most prevalent ingredient. General Mills offers 50 whole grain cereals to choose from!

According to Dr. Travis Stork, emergency room physician and host of “The Doctors,” identifying whole grain products can be challenging. Shoppers can look for nutritional cues on the front of the box, but they need to read the ingredient list to know if they are getting enough whole grain. Ingredient lists detail ingredients in order of prevalence, and if the words “whole grain” are followed by a grain like wheat or oats, it means the food contains more whole grain than any other single ingredient.

Dr. Stork has some additional recommendations to help you include whole grain easily into your diet.

Some of Dr. Stork's tips include:

Start Early! The Dietary Guidelines recommend people get at least 48 grams of whole grain in their daily diets. Get a jump-start on the day’s nutrition by incorporating whole grain into your morning routine. For instance, when choosing cereal make sure whole grain is listed as the first ingredient. One easy choice is cereal with the white check, which have more whole grain than any other single ingredient.
Make Simple Swaps. Choose whole grain versions of the foods you love. Great options include whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread or even whole grain crackers. Also, try different types of whole grain. Use brown rice instead of white rice as a side dish at dinner or popcorn, which is a whole grain, for a snack.
Don’t Judge a Food by Its Cover. The front of food packages provide good nutritional cues, but don’t forget to read the ingredients and check the nutrition label and side labels for additional health information. Cereals with the white check even include the amount of whole grain per serving on packaging.

To help with choosing products with whole grain, General Mills developed “Fast Lane for Whole Grain,” an online educational game. Consumers can navigate virtual grocery store aisles and identify products that have whole grain as the first ingredient, with the option to enter a sweepstakes to win one of each of the 50 cereals with the white check.

Our Thoughts: There are 3 modes of play in the Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Game for @Kinect: story mode, co-op dance mode and a free play mode. You have to option to select a player or answer a series of questions and let the game choose the player most like you. It was funny when I had my heart set on being selected as one of the Chipettes and the game decided I was more of a Simon. The kids loved it!

The music! Oh, the music is AWESOME! The free play mode seemed to be the fave in our home as the kids took turns dancing to their fave tunes...and a few of your faves. They're everything from the popular "All Star" to the classic "Shake Your Groove Thing" and our family fave "Witch Doctor".

Cereal is a staple in our household. General Mills cereals are a favorite cereal among the Three Boys and an Old Lady. I love it because General Mills cereals they're made with Whole Grain and the kids love 'em.

When MyBlogSpark offered Three Boys and an Old Lady the opportunity to try Frosted Toast Crunch, I jumped at the opportunity as we have been fans of Cinnamon Toast Crunch for years so I was curious to see what this NEW product was all about. It did not disappoint.

Okay, first let me explain that cereal is for breakfast, lunch and snack in our household. It's definitely an all purpose food. Finding a cereal everyone likes can be a challenge. The kids want something with sugary sweetness. I want something with at least a smidgen of something healthy. General Mills breakfast foods never disappoint.

The vanilla sweetness of Frosted Toast Crunch was absolutely delicious. I barely made it in time to sample the cereal myself and I'm glad I did. It is delicious. Lightly frosted. You know just enough to make the kiddos happy and just enough sweetness for a more discerning palate such as mine. (LOL!)

In addition to the box of cereal we received a bowl, spoon and pitcher and rather than decide which of Los Tres Amigos would be rewarded with the Spilt Milk Bowl and Lickety Spoon, we decided to gift it to my nephew. He was having a down moment and I thought the Spilt Milk Bowl and Lickety Spoon would cheer him up and it did. He couldn't wait to show his cousins his silly spoon poking out of mouth. Hilarious. I got the biggest kick listening to all the wholehearted gut-busting bursts of laughter coming from the kitchen. All of the kids were just laughing and munching.
