"Cousins in Clay" A show and sale at Bulldog Pottery, Seagrove, NC

The “Cousins in Clay” are sprucing up their studio in central North Carolina in the rural pottery community of Seagrove with "Cousins in Clay", a sale of Contemporary Ceramic Art at Bulldog Pottery. Seagrove Potters Bruce Gholson and Samantha Henneke will host pottery artists Dan Anderson, Michael Kline, and Blair Clemo. This special two day event begins on Saturday from 10:00am – 5:00pm and Sunday 10:00am - 4:00pm. On Saturday, Chronis Pou Vasiliou of Greensboro will fill the air with his enchanting Greek Bouzouki music. Blair Clemo will present a pottery demonstration on Saturday from 3:00-4:00pm. The annual potters’ potluck will be on Sunday at noon, all are welcome to bring a dish to share. On Sunday from 1:30-2:30, Dan Anderson will present a pottery demonstration and talk about his icon inspirations.

“Cousins in Clay” is a pottery kinship based on a shared appreciation for the pursuit of excellence within the diverse language of clay. May 31 – June 1 will be an opportunity to meet these five potters; come and ask questions, add to your pottery collection or begin one. Each of these artists makes “utilitarian pots” --- pots you serve in, store in, drink out of and ones you may just want to look at --- all with an artistic beauty of their own design.

Pick up a Seagrove Potters map while at Bulldog Pottery’s “Cousins in Clay” and make it a weekend of visiting Seagrove Potteries. Seagrove, North Carolina is synonymous with ceramics. A unique group of over 100 potters and over 65 open pottery shops are located within a short distance from the town of Seagrove, making it a destination for serious pottery shopping and a time to meet the potters, who are proud to make art you live with.

The Celebration of Seagrove Potters kicks off the weekend with an exciting and festive Friday night Gala event.

This is your opportunity to browse and shop the booths before the marketplace opens Saturday morning. Featuring a catered reception, live music and the popular "Seagrove Collaborative Auction" - artists from different potteries working together to make one of a kind pieces, all created here in Seagrove!

The 6th Annual Celebration of Seagrove Potters is November 22nd – 24th. Seagrove potters have been working for months in preparation for this big event. This year’s Celebration features 57 Seagrove pottery shops and more than 100 authentic Seagrove artists. The Celebration, held in the historic Luck’s Cannery on N.C. Highway 705 in Seagrove, is one of the most spectacular pottery events in North Carolina. Approximately 5,000 people visit each year throughout the weekend.

The Friday Night Gala, November 22nd, provides customers the opportunity to preview all the pottery available and to be first in line to purchase. Additionally, they enjoy live music and meet and greet with Seagrove potters during the catered reception. This year the menu features local restaurant, "Something Different" of Asheboro, live music and festive beverages.

Ticket information at Celebration Of Seagove Potters. Tickets for the Gala are $40 in advance purchase here. The Gala ticket price also includes Saturday and Sunday admission to the Celebration.

Saturday and Sunday event tickets can be purchased at the door for $5, with children 12 and under admitted free.

The collaborative auction is an extremely exciting aspect of the Gala. The auction offers the rare opportunity to bid on special pots created by two or more potters working together. These unique pots showcase each individual’s talent, creating one of the most diverse and exceptional groupings of highly collectable pots available. Among the collaborations are works by:

The North Carolina Pottery Center will be contributing to the day by showcasing the tradition of pottery through demonstrations and other activities! Please join the North Carolina Pottery Center as we help to celebrate Seagrove’s 100th anniversary.

All NCPC activities will be taking place on NCPC property except for the

Pottery Identification by Dr. Terry Zug and Steve Compton (Inside the NCPC) Dr. Terry Zug is a pottery expert who is the former chair of Southern Folklore at UNC-Chapel Hill and author of Turners and Burners: The Folk Potters of North Carolina. Steve Compton is an avid longtime pottery collector who was the first president of the North Carolina Pottery Collectors’ Guild.

Native American Pottery Demo by Caroleen Sanders (On the grounds of the NCPC) A Catawba Indian master potter, Caroleen Sanders, learned to make pottery in the traditional Catawba method by watching her mother and other family members and will be demonstrating her craft for visitors.

Raku Firing Demo by David Garner & Dan Triece (On the grounds of the NCPC) David Garner is a life-long local potter who has stretched his creative boundaries and is known for his horsehair and Raku pottery. David is the owner of Turn & Burn Pottery in Seagrove, N.C. Dan Triece is another local potter who makes use of a variety of colors and glaze combinations and is known for his copper luster Raku pottery. Dan is the owner of DirtWorks Pottery in Seagrove, N.C.

Pottery Turning Demonstration by Chad Brown (NCPC Education Building) Chad Brown is a local 5th generation potter who is recognized as an up and coming potter and who has been invited to show at this year’s Potters Market Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. on September 7th. Chad has purchased some land recently and is also in the process of building a kiln.

Agate-ware Turning Demo by Eck McCanless (NCPC Education Building) Eck McCanless, a local potter, has been turning pots since the age of 18 and is known for his distinctive “agateware” pottery. He and his family were the subjects of Jim Sharkey’s film, The Fourteenth Shop, which won the Award for Creative Excellence at the 2002 International Film and Video Festival in Redondo Beach, California. Eck is the owner of Eck McCanless Pottery in Seagrove, N.C.

New Exit Numbers and New Signs for the Seagrove Potteries

New Interstate Number for Seagrove, NC

The Exit numbers have been changed

There are new signs along Interstate 73/74 - U.S. Highway 220. The signs have brand new numbers on them. Whether you are are new to our pottery shops or a seasoned pottery visitor, the number change can be confusing when driving to visit the Seagrove Potteries.

The main exit to the Seagrove Potteries and the North Carolina Pottery Center is the Seagrove/Robbins Exit.

The Seagrove/Robbins exit is now Exit 61 (previously Exit 45)

Driving down from the North there is one exit before the Seagrove/Robbins Exit called New Hope Church Road Exit.

The New Hope Church Road Exit is now Exit 66 (previously Exit 49)

Driving up from the South there are two exits before the Seagrove Exit you can take to get to the Seagrove Potteries.

The Ether/Steeds Exit is now Exit 56 (previously Exit 39)
The Black Ankle Exit is now Exit 58 (previously Exit 41)

Meet the Potters

David MacDonald Platter

David MacDonald is an emeritus professor from Syracuse University and lives in Syracuse, New York. MacDonald received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) in 2011.
"For more than four decades, David MacDonald has masterfully created richly patterned utilitarian objects from clay that have come to symbolize tremendous integrity and endurance. Despite the national recognition MacDonald has earned for his superb work, he remains committed to, and most content when he is producing, functional works of art in beautiful forms that will be touched, held, and most importantly used by people who will admire and appreciate their inherent beauty."

Jack Troy Vase

Jack Troy is an emeritus professor from Juniata College and lives in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Troy received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) in 2012.

He began teaching young artists in 1967 at Juniata College, has taught over 185 workshops, written 2 books about clay, a book of original poems titled "Calling the Planet Home", published over 60 articles and book reviews, all while producing a constant stream of pottery at his Pennsylvania studio. Jack Troy gives homage to our state of North Carolina in his Wood-fired Stoneware and Porcelain book (1995), “If North America has a pottery state it must be North Carolina”.

Michael Kline Yunomi

Michael Kline, a studio potter from Bakersville, in the mountains of North Carolina. He creates inspired traditional forms that are graced with his elegant floral brushwork giving a botanical theme to his wood-fired pottery jugs and jar forms. Sometimes his pots are covered with a honey amber color glaze that is as appetizing as maple syrup. His work has been published in many books and magazines and he has written several articles for the Studio Potter, and writes regularly for his blog Sawdust and Dirt.

Michael Kline will be presenting a demonstration along with Bruce Gholson on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.

Samantha Henneke Covered Jar

Samantha Henneke, the host of "Cousins in Clay"in Seagrove, lives and operates Bulldog Pottery along with her husband Bruce in Seagrove, North Carolina. She wants her functional work to be both beautiful and comfortable to use. She likes to decorate her pottery with a simple swirl and at other times the form becomes a canvas for a dotted effect which can show how tight patterning can affect ones vision, creating an op-art effect of movement and vibration. She is fascinated with macro photography and exploring her garden in the summer time while collecting images of insects in their environments. She utilizes this activity to capture stories among the foliage, to create colorful insect compositions on her porcelain canvases, forming a snapshot in time and imagination.

Bruce Gholson Pitcher

Bruce Gholson, the host of "Cousins in Clay" in Seagrove, NC, lives and operates Bulldog Pottery along with his wife Samantha in Seagrove, North Carolina. He has been fascinated with fossils, fish, reptiles and insects since childhood. Recent interests have included fossilization in amber, Chinese scholar stones, and arrowheads from the region. Researching the chemistry of other arts such as fabric dyes, analog photography, and pyrotechnics provides him with inspiration in the form of comparative formula based cabalistic ceramic mediation. These interests blend into an esoteric mix that is hopefully evident in the overall feeling and imagery found in his work. Success is of course a matter of perception and opinion, but for Bruce having the goal aids in facilitating an aspect his journey- "Making pots in my own voice".

Seagrove potters have been hard at work in preparation for the big event. This year’s Celebration features 65 Seagrove pottery shops and more than 100 authentic Seagrove artists. The Celebration, held in the historic Luck’s Cannery on N.C. Highway 705 in Seagrove, is one of the most spectacular pottery events in North Carolina. Approximately 5,000 people visit each year throughout the weekend.

The Friday Night Gala, November 16th, provides customers the opportunity to preview all the pottery available and to be first in line to purchase. Additionally, they enjoy live jazz music and meet and greet with potters during the catered reception. This year features local restaurant, "Something Different" of Asheboro, music from "The Gary Woodard Band" and samples from local Asheboro brewery "Four Saints".

You can purchase your Gala tickets here online. Tickets for the Gala are $40 in advance. The Gala ticket price also includes Saturday and Sunday admission to the Celebration. Event tickets can be purchased at the door for $5, with children 12 and under admitted free.

The collaborative auction is an exciting aspect of the Gala. The auction offers the rare opportunity to bid on special pots created by two or more potters working together. These unique pots showcase each individual’s talent, creating one of the most diverse and exceptional groupings of highly collectable pots available. For a preview of what will be offered during the Gala auction, visit Celebration of Seagrove Potters.

Among the collaborations are works by Bruce Gholson and Ben Owen, Pam and Travis Owens and Jennie Keatts, Sid Luck and Stacy Lambert, David Garner and Jeff McDowell, Michael Mahan and Will McCanless, Frank Neef and Paul Ray, Donna Craven and Susan Greene, Janice and Bruce Latham, Crystal King and Jeffery Dean, Bonnie Burns and Chris Luther, Michael Mahan and Phil Pollet. The Celebration of Seagrove Potters can also be followed on Facebook. Potters regularly post updates and photos of what they have been working on.

The Celebration continues November 17th, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and November 18th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday visitors will have the opportunity to bid on special pots donated for the silent auction, which takes place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Potters will demonstrate throughout the weekend event. Demonstrating potters include: Eck McCanless, Michael Mahan, Sid Luck, Ben Owen, Charles “Doc” Tostoe, Frank Neef, Jared Zehmer and David Fernandez.

Children are encouraged to attend the event with two booths designed with them in mind. In one, children have the opportunity to explore their creativity with hands-on activities. The other features donated pots that only children can purchase, priced from $1 to $5. The proceeds benefit art programs in local schools.

The Exhibition showcases the high quality and rich diverseness of clay art created by faculty who are instructors of ceramics at universities and colleges throughout North Carolina. At the same time, it gives evidence of the experience available to college students in North Carolina’s Universities and Colleges and aptly reflects the spirit of design and the faculty’s commitment to North Carolina’s ceramic education.

Also on Saturday, November 10^th, the Center is opening its doors and grounds for the education and benefit of the public with 5^th generation Seagrove potter Chad Brown of the Chriscoe family, firing the groundhog kiln on the pottery center lawn. The firing of the groundhog kiln takes approximately 15 hours and uses 2 cords of wood. The public is welcome to come out to view the firing and see how the process was done over 200 years ago and still continues today.

SEAGROVE — “The Collector’s Eye, Series II: Seven Perspectives,” which explores the state’s pottery heritage through examples of pottery selected by seven women from their personal collections, will be on display at the N.C. Pottery Center in Seagrove, beginning Aug. 10.

The collectors include Cynthia Brown, Hope B. Haywood, Patricia H. Hyman, Eleanor Owen, Bunny Andrews Schrooer, Peg Wiebe and one collector who chooses to remain anonymous. These collectors provide a unique and interesting perspective on North Carolina pottery, filling a special niche in preserving the state’s clay heritage.

This is the second installment of the “Collector’s Eye” series (the first included seven collectors who are men and ran from Nov. 23, 2010 through Feb. 12, 2011) that takes the viewer on a visual journey around the state’s potteries through selected collectors’ eyes. Nearly 140 objects are displayed in the exhibit, including historic and contemporary North Carolina pottery made by some of North Carolina’s finest potters.

The exhibit will open Aug. 10 and continue through Oct. 27.

An opening reception will take place at the center Friday, Aug. 17, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public. A full-color catalog, including all of the exhibited pottery, will be available for purchase. Special thanks to catalog sponsor, Daisy Wade Bridges.

The Craig Woolard Band

The Craig Woolard Band is a Carolina-based beach group that also performs a variety of other music — from R&B to country to rock ‘n’ roll, from The Temptations to The Four Tops, Rod Stewart to Journey, Ray Charles to Otis Redding, Sam Cooke to Michael Buble, Ray LaMontagne to The Black Eyed Peas.

Frontman Craig Woolard spent years with The Embers as lead singer and frontman for one of North Carolina’s official ambassadors of beach music. For the past six years, he has co-hosted the Carolina Beach Music Awards (CBMA) at the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach. In 2010 and 2011, Woolard was honored as CBMA’s Male Vocalist of the Year.

African Children’s Choir

Since 1984, over a thousand children have toured as members of the African Children’s Choir. Their message of hope has touched audiences around the world, and changed the lives of thousands more of Africa’s most vulnerable children.

The African Children’s Choir is just one program run by Music for Life. The tour raises money to support educational and humanitarian programs across East and South Africa.

Music for Life currently works in seven African countries: Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana and South Sudan.

Black & Blue

Since 1968, Black & Blue has entertained audiences in some of the most elegant nightclubs worldwide — from the Virgin Islands to Puerto Rico, and across the eastern United States and Canada.

Eric & The Chill Tones

Lead singer Eric Chilton is probably best-known to local folks for his weather duties at WFMYNews 2. Some may also know Eric’s voice from his singing with the Greensboro Big Band for many years. But he is also a beach music fanatic.

Here’s what someone had to say about a performance by the group: “Eric and The Chill Tones played during a benefit at Reidsville Elks Lodge and it was one of the best dances ever there. Eric and The Chill Tones put on a great show with great music and kept the crowd dancing all night long! The Elks crowd liked them so much they booked them for New Year’s Eve that very night. Great band and great time!”

The Holiday Band

Sunday, Aug. 19

The Holiday Band was formed in 1991 in Burlington, N.C. For years, the group played part-time, mostly for private events. With its blend of soul, blues, funk and Carolina beach music, however, the band established itself as premier entertainers.

Due to the success of the group’s recordings, the number of appearances gradually increased. Now they play 175 dates — or more — each year.

The band has received several awards, including a CAMMY for best album. The Rhythm & Beach Top 40 countdown recently awarded the band for having the most songs to chart in the past 10 years.

They have played thousands of shows from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Cozumel, Mexico, with an ever-present theme: Keep The Music Alive!

The Embers

Monday, Sept. 3

For decades The Embers have been making music by playing a mix of rhythm and blues and heart and soul.

R&B became the foundation and essence of soul music and the Motown sound, but in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida and Alabama, the name that applies is “beach music.”

To say that The Embers play beach music is an understatement. After 18 albums and numerous single releases, The Embers are one of the most popular and active groups in the country, boasting about 250 dates a year from Toronto to Florida to California. They have played for presidents and princes, students and bankers, at the beach and in the city, on record and in concert, for the armed forces and audiences all around the world.

In December of 2007 and again in 2008, The Embers were invited to perform their Christmas program for troops and their families at military camps and bases throughout South Korea.

The Fantastic Shakers

Sunday, Sept. 16

The third week of September in 1978 marked the beginning of an era: The formation of The Fantastic Shakers. Since its inception, the band has performed more than 6,000 engagements from New York to Florida and throughout the Southeast. South Carolina’s Grand Strand has become the band’s summer home and their hit single, “Myrtle Beach Days,” catapulted The Shakers to the top of the Carolinas’ musical groups.

The group has won a laundry list of beach music awards over the years, including two-time show group of the year and three-time album of the year. Lead singer Bo Schronce has been named Male Vocalist of the Year on four occasions, as well as induction into the Hall of Fame.

The music is great, but what sets The Fantastic Shakers apart is the personality of the group. From start to finish every performance becomes a party.

Super Art Affaire!

April 21st, 2012

at Pinewood Country Club

Tickets are $50 each and are limited

An annual fundraiser for the Randolph Arts Guild, Asheboro, North Carolina

Art Affaire, held each spring, is an art auction (and really great party) to help fund the Arts Guild's projects and programs. We have a live auction that consists of original artworks made and donated by artists. There is also a silent auction with art work and commercial goods.

The In The Grove - April by Rhonda McCanless is out and she has written detailed information about all of the upcoming events for the Celebration of Spring in Seagrove Kiln Openings! You can read all about it at The Professional Page on Scribd.

On April 21 and 22, 2012 around 35 Seagrove Potters will have kiln openings at their individual studios. Hours vary with many shops open on Sunday.
