Carnival Party Details Galore!

I am known in my circle of friends as being an avid crafter and planner of parties! The previous year's theme was Candy Land and this past year was no exception! It took me two months to strategize and conceptualize this grand idea deemed, "Carnival Extravaganza." From table linen, to chair covers and sashes, striped canopy ceilings, festively edible as well as custom doll and plush cotton candy centerpieces, games, a retro candy bar, excessive take-home loot, quality cupcakes from a local baker with custom toppers, custom invitations, name cards, a photo booth with mustache and mask props and enough sugar to make a parent question my parenting priorities, it all came together quite successfully! I have to confess the celebrated person is only 10 years of age, but every participant, onlooker and parent who had the energy to witness the event was blown away by all the exquisite crafting details of the party. Many of the centerpieces, posters and blurs of extravagant color were the works of amazing Etsy artisans. I also have to admit that while I highly prefer uniquely handmade items to emphasize the party theme I was harnessing, it did add up. You get what you pay for, and in this case, it was and still is, STIMULATING PERFECTION...and, I am reliving every moment of this carnival party in my mind even though this event was 8 months ago. Call me crazy...for cotton candy!

Holiday Ornaments from Original Collages!

I was wracking my brain the day before my art class this week. My loyal students keep coming back for more creative inspiration and projects. We have covered the theory and history of collage, the variations and open interpretation of collage, 3D collage, functional collage, handmade stencils - creatively applied to bookmarks, stationery, journals, t-shirts, totes and aprons. We've also discussed the concept of graffiti and how it can personally be interpreted to represent an idea or perspective. We used Sharpie to convey this idea. Well, with the holiday season upon us and the flagrant surrounding of festive decor and song, I came up with the idea my students would create two or three 5"x5" collages on recycled cardstock, let the collages dry, cut them into 8 equal strips, hot glue the strips on one end, while creating a star-like structure. They rendered these star-like, partial ornament shapes to me and I drilled a hole through it using my awesome Dremel tool. The other ends would be glued to create a simple yet organic looking orb. I used rusted copper wire to create the hanger. Voila! Beautiful and original works of art!

Hello, Collage Enthusiasts! I just wanted to let you all know I finally uploaded all the web content to our new website, Twin Soul Art Studio. I am especially excited about my collage classes starting up again. I love, love, LOVE teaching art! It is incredibly fun, engaging and I thoroughly enjoy communicating the intricacies and finer points of collage composition to my students. I love how determined and creative their minds become and how purposeful their hands become when they lay down each piece of paper or imagery. It really is a lovely sight to behold.

Listen, if I read this blog and heard the art instructor talk this crazily about teaching, I would SIGN MY KID UP! Shameless plug, but I had to say it.

Collage Exhibit at KALEID Gallery in San Jose!

I was recently invited to exhibit my collage work at a gallery that features about 60 local artists, ranging from student work to new to seasoned artists. You might pay $1 for an ACEO print or $4000 for an original painting. Kaleid Gallery is located in downtown San Jose on 4th Street; a place where you will find just the right amount of art with enough visual energy to make you a patron for life. Join us on Two Buck Tuesdays, the 3rd Tuesday of every month, where you can shop for cool $2 items from various artists.

32 Hours of Collage Art Camp!

I had the funnest week with my collage art students this past week. They ranged in ages 8 to 10 and they LOVED creating collage art. The collage projects included 5"x5" canvases, wood panels, wood blocks, photo frames, notebooks, bottle cap pins, pewter pendants, resin paperweights, bulletin board tacks, pocket mirrors and table tops! I played 80's music throughout the camp and had two breaks in a nearly 8 hour day of camp. I love seeing kids pouring their creative energies into art. I also think I have given them a new perspective on how everyday images can create the most amazing compositions of art.

Collage Table Top

With so many leftover scraps from my collage classes this summer, I decided to create a custom collage table top. It took about 5 days to complete. I just ordered a custom cut square piece of glass to cover and protect the table artwork. What do you think? I think recycled rocks!
