Too Soon and It Is All Over

It seems like just yesterday when I was putzing around

the house trying to finish packing.

In that time my guineas have had keets,

one of my Australorp hens will have had chicks,

and I will have grown so much.

(Literally and figuratively. Gee thanks Tom, Becky and Ben)

We boarded our trusty tour bus at six o'early yesterday morning.

Normally this would be sleeping in, but when staying up working

on one's journal for repeated nights in a row ......

Once again our trusty bus driver was Ernie Griffiths.

We headed for The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs.

Ben and I kind of ditched the tour group

and hung back to watch this woman.

She was so very nice and explained

that she was chasing a theory she'd

developed based in a rock that

she had found in the lower left hand corner

of her work area. She also uncovered the

large bones that were being protected.

After the tour we had the opportunity to browse around the

exhibit hall and visit the labs.

Since I had already read every possible word in every exhibit

with Draven and the Germans (kind of sounds like a rock band),

I opted to go out in search of the elusive South Dakota cache.

It still eluded me.

All I found were turkey vultures.

There was also a lot of muggle activity

that was making it much more difficult.

Yeah, that's it. I'll blame it on the muggles.

I am proud to announce that I correctly

identified a member of the Loyal Order of the Water Buffalo.

This guy had a part in Dances With Wolves.

He also takes part in Civil War re-enactments.

Bet his regiment would pay big bucks for this picture!

Drove on to Custer, but couldn't actually get into Custer

because of the forest fire so we had to approach it from another direction.

I was frantically scrambling to get a picture of

the helicopter in this field

only to discover that there were 8 or 10 of them.

We continued through Custer.

I could easily go for a bunch of greenhouses in my backyard!

I wouldn't have minded stopping here ....

We drove past Crazy Horse, stopping long enough

for a photo opportunity.

Then it was on to Wade's Gold Mill.

I've spent a lot of time in the Hills and I

had never heard of this place.

We were given a tour and then panned for gold.

It isn't as easy as it looks.

After touring the gold mine in Lead,

we checked out the night life in Deadwood.

If teaching doesn't work out ....

I could run the "Miss T's Sweet Treats" brothel.

A group of us opted to go to the cemetery

but after it began to rain, only the strongest

choose to go.

After nearly dying on the way up the 136 metal steps,

I was rewarded with a friendship cemented by hysterical laughter.

During the course of this week, I discovered that most

of my GEON-mates don't know the meaning of phallic.

Shari does. She had no trouble whatsoever

when I pointed out the phallic tombstone.

Upon closer investigation, Shari

noted this:

We were soaked to the skin by the time we got back downtown,

so we did the only logical thing to do. We ate.

Then we went and bought matching t-shirts.

I was lucky to be part of two GEON groups.

Pine Ridge Reservation

Yesterday was another full day.

But, then, it always is in GEON.

We left CSC early and headed north to the reservation.

We passed through White Clay on our way to Pine Ridge.

It's claim to fame is the astronomical amount of beer

that they sell to the residents of the reservation.

I have read different figures --

ranging from 11,000 cans to 13,000 cans DAILY.

That is just mind-boggling to me.

The tribe has filed a $500 million lawsuit against

the four liquor stores on up to the beer distributors.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this

and how long it gets bounced around the

court system.

Our guide for the day,

Carol Rempp, warned us

that we could see people passed out on the sidewalk.

There were three men, but they weren't passed out but I'm

quite sure they were well on their way. They were sitting on

the sidewalk, leaned up against the metal of the liquor store,

with their drinks in their hands. All three waved.

When we came home, there were several sprawled out ---

obviously out cold. Many more Lakota were walking, either toward

or from the liquor store. Still, every single one waved.

Their faces reflected the hard life and I'd venture to guess

that each one was younger than they appeared.

From there we went to the Red Cloud Indian School.

Upon entering, we noticed that the bricks were engraved with names and years.

Three of us spent almost thirty minutes looking at

and photographing names and dates on bricks.

We found as early as 1952 and a current 2012.

Some were simple.

Some were in script.

Some were carved in reverse.

And Marsha graduated the same year I did.

I loved this and I think we should do this at my school.

I'm sure the administration wouldn't mind.

But think about it .... a kid moves into your school

and they are taken out to carve their name and date

into the "community wall". They would instantly

feel like they were a part of the school.

You can't even tell from a distance ....

From there we went to the gift shop

and I let the "GEON green flow"

to quote Randy.

I bought postcards for each of my students.

I bought a woven bracelet.

I bought some books.

No wait, that can't be ---

I've taken a vow to not buy any more books!

With that out of the way, I could enjoy

the 44th annual juried art show.

I fell in love with a new art --- ledger art

I had a very enjoyable discussion about this

with both Carol and Chris, but not at the same time

and obviously not when this picture was taken.

When the Indians were placed on reservations, those on the Plains

that hunted no longer were able to do so and didn't have access to

animal hides so they were given ledger books to use.

I could have spent a lot more time in the gallery,

but I was afraid that I was going to miss the cemetery

if I did so I grudgingly pulled myself away and walked

up the hill with Lonnie. We talked about the layout of the

headstones and the differences in the materials.

Markers ranged from simple wooden crosses

to Red Cloud's stone marker.

I looked for stories and found a pair of graves

that were obviously children -

one young boy and one young girl - twins perhaps.

I took a lot of photos for my final project.

Now I just need to get them organized.

Guess what I'll be doing next week while

I'm at the leadership conference in Denver?!

We went to Wounded Knee and saw the site

of the mass burial

The one thing that I noticed which Lonnie said was just a coincidence:

EVERYTHING was uphill.

There was supposed to be a geocache there as well,

but my GPS put me in the middle of the asphalt road.

I really hadn't done my homework on this because I was too

busy doing my "real" homework which irritated me because

I have yet to log a find in South Dakota.

Our next jaunt was to the Badlands.

I had never been through there before.

It was quite the experience ---

especially at 111 degrees!

Of course we were in an air-conditioned bus,

but sadly the air conditioner quit working

just as it had for GEON 2010!

We were all thrilled to get to the Badlands National Park.

I visited with a gentleman named Conroy Corbin.

He was a sweetheart.

And then there was this character.

This is Tom. He takes care of all the meal prep planning.

I'm trying to convince him to let me help him with this next year.

I explained that I'm an exceptional worker.

I think he laughed.

Can you believe that?!

We took a long time at this museum because no one

wanted to leave the air conditioning.

How would you like to meet this while you were out hiking?

Yeah, me neither!

Wouldn't want to meet this one either!

Chicken? What chicken?

It wasn't long before Carol was pointing

out our day's journey and showing us

the road we would be taking back to our

rooms in Edna Work Hall.

We arrived back in Chadron and were on our own for supper

so we checked out the local watering hole

that is known for their burgers.

This nice young man who plays football for CSC

waited on us and I

think he was a bit overwhelmed.

We finally called it a night since we had

to be on the bus by 6:00 a.m.

A Birthday to Remember

I have had some pretty incredible birthdays.

Mardell surprised me with a party when I turned thirty.

When I hit forty, I threw a big ass party and invited forty people.

(So what if 32 of them were perfect strangers and the rest were family?!)

Next year when I turn 50, I will also be celebrating 25 years with

my best friend and soul mate and we have talked about doing

something special to commemorate the two milestones, so I had

no problem being in GEON on my birthday.

I had no clue it would be a memorable day as well.

When I walked into class, Shari had a birthday cake

drawn on the board.

She made my day right there because I've

never celebrated my birthday at school before!

Tom even made sure that I had a cake

and Lonnie served it up for everyone.

It was German Chocolate and very, very good.

The day consisted of more lectures

and activities before going into the field.

(See Mary Alice ... knives are good for Play-Doh as well as candy!)

We had to use shaving cream or play-doh to make a land feature

that we had seen the previous two days.

Let's just say that the sculptors of the world needn't

worry about competition. I'm not quitting my day job!

I have learned more than I can hold in my head .... I have

pages of notes of things to look up once I get back next week.

The team made time for us to visit the

Mari Sandoz Historical Society Center here on campus.

I enjoyed this a lot and I am quite sure that

Marishe and I could have been good friends had

we lived in the same time period and place.

I wish school didn't start until after Labor Day

because there are so many places that I want

to come back to so that I can poke around some more.

We ate lunch and returned to the classroom.

We didn't exactly mind since it was

We got to visit the Museum of the Black Hills which is

the baby of Dr. Leighty. It spanned 10,000 years of the Black Hills

and was very interesting, but I was more entranced

with watching the scientist sort out mosquitoes to send off for West

Nile testing. It looked about as tedious as cataloging books.

(But don't worry Vicki, I haven't bought any more books. No sirree!)

Then we drove out to the Museum of the Fur Trade.

You'll never guess what I found out there!

Jen told me that I could at least wait

until the engine stopped

before I started looking for geocaches!

My goal is to find at least one cache

on each date of the year within the next four years.

(It's good to have goals, you know.)

I've already gotten leap year

out of the way so I think it's doable.

I think the curators must use an extensive amount

of mothballs in order to preserve the furs. I began

seeing an aura within fifteen minutes of being inside and I

had to have Traci take me back to the college.

My motto is "Better living through chemistry".

No, wait ... maybe it's "Twenty minutes of sleep will fix anything."

At any rate, I was as good as new again so we walked to the park

for our exotic cook-out.

We had alligator, wild boar, Rocky Mountain oysters,

venison (four or five different ways), bear, crayfish and frog legs.

I tried a bit of everything, but my favorite is still wild boar.

All too soon, the sun sank below the horizon and we had to head back.

The culminating event was the movie "I Left My Heart at Wounded Knee."

I only made it through about thirty minutes and I just couldn't watch anymore.

Reading about the atrocities is horrible enough without visualizing them.

Those images are going to be stuck in my head for a long time.

Tomorrow we go to the Pine Ridge reservation.

I've tried to prepare myself for it,

but I know that I won't be.

It was horrible enough watching the ABC special

on Pine Ridge this past spring.

She Who Disappears to Geocache or Dances With Ticks?

Today's lectures centered on Native Americans ---

specifically the Lakota. I have been very interested

in the Lakota heritage because of our foster children,

Laura, Chris, and Kody.

This is Laura with her first daughter, Victoria, in 2006.

She abruptly left us in November of 2005. It wasn't until

she showed up with Victoria that we knew why.

It was easier for her to return to her family than to

tell us that she was pregnant.

She and her brother Chris lived with us on two separate occasions.

The first time they were with us was for a period of two years.

Then when Laura was in the fourth grade,

they came back and we ultimately became their legal guardians.

Chris wasn't coping in school because of one

teacher (yes, one teacher can make or break a child's education)

and he elected to go live with his brothers and Laura

chose to stay. We didn't want her to lose her heritage, but we

also wanted her to be able to function productively in a white

world without falling prey to alcoholism.

I was interested more in the culture of the Lakota and attended

several of the Pow Wows at Fort Robinson and in Scottsbluff.

Laura was a jingle dancer and enjoyed it immensely.

I am Kody's god-father.

Now that you have quit laughing, I
can explain that his mother had already
picked out a godmother but he was insistent,
so I agreed to be the god-father.
From tomboy to god-father in thirty years.
Not too shabby.

Even though the kids no longer live with us, I am still

very interested in the heritage and culture.

In the mid 18th century there were about 20,000 Sioux.

Today there are about 70,000 and only one-third speak

the ancestral language.

Lonnie gave us a brief overview of the history of the Lakota
including treaties, encounters with various soldiers and battles.

Did you know that there were 720 treaties with the Native Americans?
The number just boggles my mind and also impresses
upon me the need to be aware of what our
government is currently doing. If we broke them
back then, chances are that we still are .... just with a different group.

After Lonnie finished talking, Shari presented a
fantastic lesson on finding stories in cemeteries.
I had been kicking around some ideas for our final
project that we have to present in October,
but nothing had grabbed me.

Shari's grabbed me! Instantly I saw how I could
set up a scavenger hunt for my kiddos, which she later suggested.
It just goes to show that great minds think alike!

In fact, Traci and I went out tonight and started my field study for this.
Yep, you guessed it ---- geocaching in and around cemeteries.
Okay, so there is more to it than that, but it is geocaching that
really got me interested in nosing around tombstones.

To start our field study for the day, we arrived at the Drifter's Cookshack.

It was a beautiful day.

If you can call 100 degrees beautiful.

We ordered our lunches

and then were free to nose around the town.

I started with the blacksmith ....

and moved on to the jail ...

and then on to the Post Office .....

and then to the Mercantile.

Hmmmm ......

Traci seemed to be stuck at the saloon.

There was also a school house .....

however, I don't think they quite have the 11,500 books
in their classroom like Vicki and I do .....

I could see myself as a settler here ....

... especially with this view!

Give me a few donkeys and I'd be happy.

.... I think House Hunters might have had some trouble!

I'm going to need this sign in exactly one year.

They showed how settlers had to raise their own food ....

and chop their own wood for the season!

They also raise buffalo

and chickens.

my pants when I stayed overnight
with her because I was too damn
scared to go out there!

Because it took longer for lunch, we were forced to
skip Hudson-Meng and move on to Fort Robinson
so that we didn't lose our reservations.

The green trees are the site of a geocache.
My wonderful classmates covered while I snuck
off to look for it. They lingered at the far edge
of the mowed area looking at a blue sign with four words
on it for fifteen minutes.

When Laura's grandmother died, we attended
parts of the wake with her. I couldn't believe
how strong that was when it was burning.

By this time, we were all hot and grumbly
(Yes, I know that's not a word, but it's my blog and I can use it if I want to!)

and we gratefully sank down into the shade

for a break before leaving for the buffalo stew cook-out.

I especially liked the cook-out because I slipped away

(do you notice a theme here with the title?)

and looked for a geocache during the sing-a-long.

After traversing a marshy, swampy area three times,

I was successful! I also saw one red fox, two cottontails, three

white-tail deer and a ~~partridge in a pear tree~~ turkey vulture.

I returned just as everyone was loading up;

however, as we returned to the bus I discovered a multitude of ticks.

By midnight I was up to a count of eleven.

If I were given a Native American name, it would probably either be

Sand Dune Buggy Bus

Let me re-introduce myself since it has been so long since I have blogged. I am Sister One, the oldest of four girls. Three of us are still alive and we began blogging as a way to keep in touch with each other and our fast moving lives. It was also an excellent way to keep in touch with Mom without actually having to pick up the phone and call. As soon as a new post went up, she would be one of the first to comment and then she'd call to see if we had seen her comment yet. I didn't realize how much I had come to expect her comments until she died and then I didn't write nearly as much because it just wasn't the same. Aunt Sue died a short time later and our audience of two readers was gone.

GEON is a perfect reason to blog once again and I am going to try to post about each day's events. They are fully packed and we don't finish until 9:00 some nights, so I'm not going to promise anything. As one of my students would tell me, "Suck it up, cupcake and just do it." So I'm just doing it.

I was so excited when I first learned that Vicki and I had been selected for this year's GEON "Frontier Adventure". That sounds so much better than Geography of the Frontier: Northwest Nebraska and Connections. We had both gone in 2010 when it was in Scottsbluff and you can read about those adventures here: Part I and Part II.

After our intense two weeks of Primarily Math in Grand Island, I was a lot less excited. There were only two weeks in between events and I spent the first week finishing up my End of Course projects.

The Monday before we were to go, Vicki found out that she had a detached retina and had to go IMMEDIATELY for surgery and would be unable to go.

I moped for the rest of the week. To make matters worse, we had to put Pudge (aka Fluffbutt) to sleep. Traci helped console us at the Silver bullet in Morrill.

The special was beef and noodles. Beef and noodles will fix just about anything. I was telling Traci all about GEON and she was very envious. When I got home that evening, I checked my e-mail to discover a message from the infamous Dr. Randy Bertolas

He is the coordinator for GEON but his real job is being the best geography professor at Wayne State College, not Wayne State University, but Wayne State College. Notice the camera in his hand? I don't think I've ever seen him without one. At any rate, several people had to back out for various reasons, and he was soliciting suggestions for replacement "frontiersmen and women".

I shot an e-mail to Traci, my friend from childhood and our student intern last year.

Then I called her to tell her about it. She claims it was midnight. I don't think it was past eleven. She should just feel special because I DON'T call people very doggone often.

She was accepted, so the prospect of a Vicki-less week brightened.

~~Traci wanted to drive because she has control issues.~~ Traci volunteered to drive.

I must say it was the fastest trip I've made from Scottsbluff to Chadron since I owned my Trans Am. I think she must be related to Mario Andretti (I think I just dated myself, didn't I?!)

We did arrive safely and carried all of our junk to our dorm room. I've now experienced dorm life twice. Not bad for all of the hours that I've racked up! We went downstairs and the evening started with an icebreaker. God, how I ABHOR those! Then we had a brief lecture outlining institute expectations, the five themes of geography, and he dropped the bomb that we are also required to present at the state Social Studies conference in Omaha on October 13th. Sorry Nicki, but I probably won't surprise you on your 40th birthday unless I learn how to clone myself before then --- and I just don't think the world is ready for two of me!

The official portion of the evening concluded with a picnic. We had two fun teamwork activities and then we gorged ourselves on hot dogs, hamburgers, and venison sausage while getting to know the other participants.

I love it when people from the eastern end of the state come out west. They are always taken with the tranquility and beauty of the area. I just hope that they don't go back and tell anyone because unlike Jules Sandoz, I don't want a bunch of people moving in!

This morning we had lectures from Randy. I wish I could produce power point talks like he does. He had us laughing right away. After that we heard from a retired soil conservationist. He discussed the formation of the Sandhills. Did you know that the Sandhills covers approximately one-fourth of our great state?

They span 19,600 square miles. 80% is range land grazing for 535,500 cattle. 10% is wild hay and another 5% is used for planting crops. 1% is said to be wetlands comprised of lakes and marshes. There are literally thousands of lakes. The majority of them are very shallow and are ten acres or less.

Because of all these lakes, the Sandhills are part of the Central Flyway for 24 to 27 different migratory birds. In fact, we saw American White Pelicans on the lake just above.

The Sandhills are considered to be the largest sand dune in the Western Hemisphere. They can be as much as 400 feet high and stretch as far as twenty miles. Some dunes have a 25% slope ... wouldn't that make for great sledding?!

Following that, we heard from one of CSC's English professors who is the resident expert on Mari Sandoz. We were required to read Old Jules, Crazy Horse, and Cheyenne Autumn.

I hadn't ever read anything by Sandoz before, so I tackled Old Jules first. As much as I disliked Old Jules (he was really quite the bastard), I ordered three more books by Sandoz. I couldn't put the book down even though I disliked him. Crazy Horse is exceptionally good too, but it makes me rather ashamed to be white. I really have a hard time with some of the atrocities committed by whites.

One of the highlights of the day was going to where Old Jules had a dugout.

It was across the Niobrara, but that didn't stop us.

Naturally I had worn my boots instead of my toe shoes.

It didn't stop me though, I just took them off and plowed ahead.

This is Karen on top of the spot where Old Jules' dugout was that he lived in before he had a sod house. We were both surprised at how small it must have been.

I, of course, found an exceptional spot for a geocache.

We waded back to those waiting on the other bank.

I was soaked up to my knees, but it was well worth it!

We have to hand it to our bus driver ...

... she didn't even flinch when she was confronted with this:

It's hard to see, but it was pure mud.

"No problem," she said and we forged ahead, only fishtailing a slight bit.

She made it through very narrow auto gates ---

and yes, they are auto gates --- not cattle guards.

She went up steep inclines (which we now know could be as much as 25%) to get us to the middle of nowhere. She drove through pastures on non-existent trails.

Of course, if any of the administrators from this school district should be reading this blog, rest assured that I just made all of this up and photoshopped the pictures!

We dubbed the bus our Sand Dune Buggy Bus!

I just wish that the driver worked for our district! She was fantastic.

We also had a very spunky guide who personally knew the Sandoz family because he left home at nine and ended up living with one of the brothers.

He entertained us with stories while on the bus.

Our first stop was the historic well where Old Jules was seriously injured.

Shari read us the part where he was dropped into

the well and then basically left to die.

I have to say that she appears to be doing much better than she was in 2010.

We visited the cemetery of the Sandoz graves and signed the register.

Shari read to us from Old Jules pertinent parts regarding each relative. I enjoyed listening to her read. I have to admit that I've never been read to in a cemetery before.

Mary, you'll be happy to know that I thought of you today!

We continued through the Sandhills. Last April I bought a truck

on an on-line auction site unseen.

I don't recommend that anyone do this --- my truck doesn't look quite this bad, but I still don't recommend anyone do this.

As a kid, my family spent many, many week-ends at Smith Lake.

I was so happy when we got to stop by I texted Sister Two with this message, "I don't want to brag, but I'm at Smith Lake."

She responded with, "I don't want to brag, but I'm in an air-conditioned office."

I definitely got the better end of the deal here. It was beautiful.

I can remember lots of camping trips in the old turquoise Studebaker camper.

Somehow, Jen (our dear departed sister) always seemed to find the snakes and leeches.

Sister Two and Sister Three usually ended up with this scene:

and Dad would be overjoyed. I don't think he enjoyed fishing with us much.

Camping yes, but definitely not fishing.

We continued our drive

and eventually wound up

at the gravesite of Mari Sandoz and Old Jules' orchards.

Here we learned that Traci is a Grasshopper Whisperer.

After a brief stop at a water tank for a quick, refreshing drink and a toast,

we headed home, thinking about all that we had experienced today.

I know that we all set wonderful examples for our students

and didn't engage in any climbing activities that might be dangerous.

We got back to Chadron and went to eat at my favorite restaurant, Angela's where I got to visit with Dr. Blundell. It's always so much fun to see professors that you have had. She is going to help me out with my plan for the dark side studies.

We got back to the dorm and Jedidiah Smith came to visit.

It was a great day and I can hardly wait until ~~tomorrow~~ we

have to report back to class in six short hours!

Fairy Town

My super over-achiever friend Julie inspired (guilted) me with the cool fairy garden she made with her girls for a contest on the Magic Onion blog.

So I thought I'd give it the ol' slacker mom try and throw something together with my kids in case any fairy folk happened to be passing through the neighborhood.

We broke out the toadstools and even planted some creeper moss for our little fairy friends. Of course that was a month ago, and those fairies forgot to water it, so now their lawn is looking a little parched. I guess they were off chasing bedbugs or fireflies or whatever it is they do, sadly neglecting their watering duties.

Fortunately, the extensive collection of lavender that was planted is still hanging on.

What fairy house would be complete without a nice little outdoor shower? We picked up those ebony stones from a local gnome, who pretty much raked us over the coals with the markup. Nothing else really complimented the abalone tub, so we had to fork over a fist full of coins for those babies.

The real downside with this property is that it is on well water, which is fine if you don't mind a bunch of sand in your sink every time you run the tap. But I think most city fairies prefer regular plumbing--and don't even ask me about the septic system. What a nightmare.

Once we got started I realized what we really needed around this place were some laundry fairies.

Sadly, our laundry pile is as big as ever.

On the bright side, the kids had a blast and now we're entered into the contest. Maybe we'll win something like a fairy kitchen. Someone keeps sneaking into ours and leaving the fridge open.

A Moment of Silence

You know those times when it gets really quiet around the house and you suddenly realize that your children are either unconscious or helpfully decorating the side of the garage with that pack of Sharpies you shoved in the back of the junk drawer? I noticed a moment of silence kind of like that today and got a little worried.

I went outside to investigate and the absurdity of this scene left me speechless.

Just as he was heading into the home stretch, Number 24 decided to bale.

No snails were harmed in the making of this blog post.

Geocaching

As some of you know, I have fallen in love with the sport of geocaching.

It's kind of funny if you think about it .... as geographically challenged as I am I love it.

Really geocaching is nothing more than using million dollar satellite systems to find tupperware in the woods.

Two weeks ago I went to Denver to the reading conference.

I convinced my room mates to go out with me at 10:30

the first night because a big blizzard was predicted for the next day.

We cached until after midnight and then decided that

we should probably get some sleep so we didn't fall asleep

during our conference sessions.

We found one cache and searched high and low for another to no avail.

I convinced one room mate to join me to look again.

We braved the weather, but we came up empty-handed.

We got back to our motel and I re-read the clues.

I was just sure after reading the clues, that the

cache was in a fake flower.

I tried to convince the others to go look with me again,

but I didn't have any takers. So I went alone.

The snow was blowing sideways at about 40 m.p.h.

and the visibility was nil. Fortunately, the cache was only about

three blocks from the motel.

Once again I came up empty-handed.

By this time I was frustrated,

so I e-mailed the cache owner.

The next day he e-mailed me and we had the

right location, but the cache had been muggled.

(That simply means that a non-cacher found it and took it.)

At any rate, I have enjoyed puzzle caches and theme caches,

so I combined the two and came up with this puzzle.

The word lunatic is derived from the word lunar.

My students have been been out of sorts the last couple of days.

Now we know why!

My equine friends don't seem to mind it though!

A friend on Facebook posted that this is the

Full Moon of the Wolf.

Named by Native American Tribes,

this moon arrived when howls of hungry wolves could

be heard outside of villages.

Here, it should be known as the Moon of the Coyote.

They have been yipping and carrying on like crazy.

Last night they were right across the creek.

of the moon for timing and finding their path of migration.

I looked this last one up to see if there was any truth to it

in regards to my dear sisters. It was within three days.

There have been countless studies about the effects of the full moon,

but most have proven inconclusive or have shown that there is no effect.

Colonel Cluck

Yes, I said Colonel Cluck,

not Colonel Klink.

Last summer just before school started I began hearing roosters.

Trust me when I say my hearing roosters was nothing

like when my better half began hearing kittens.

(I hadn't been exposed to pain killers and anesthetics like she had been

but that's another story for another day. It's a great story though!)

I had heard crowing roosters for about a week.

We live about a quarter of a mile from our closest neighbor

and we never hear their poultry.

So I set off on a walk to find my early morning alarm clock.

North of us I discovered a big white rooster and his hen,

so naturally I gave chase.

It pretty much sucks when a rooster can outrun you.

I was disgusted and hot so I went home.

I began to call the white one Colonel Crow
and the red one Madame Cluck.

I sat and pondered how to catch them.

I knew I would have to be wily,

so I channeled one of my favorite cartoon characters.

He always used bird seed,

so I decided to use grain.

Let's just say that didn't work

and since I was

fresh out of dynamite,

I wasn't sure what my next step would be.

About a week after my grain bribe,

one of my faithful companions squeezed under the fence

and went on a walk-about.

I discovered my escape artist had escaped
and so I went to look for him.

I found him down the road a piece, crouched over the hen
and just a 'chewing away. I was mortified.

I could see the hen was still breathing

but looked to be in bad shape and I suspected that I would have

to put the poor bird out of it's misery.

When I pulled Sammy off, the stupid bird took off running.

Now I figured even I could catch an injured bird, but

that stupid hen led me on a merry chase.

However, I was ultimately successful

and I carried the bloody bird back to the farm.

I put it into a small dog crate

and allowed it to settle in.

It made all sorts of chicken noises and sounded much

like a hen.......

until bright and early one morning I heard the crowing of a rooster.

A weak, very hoarse crow, but a crow it was.

Seems like I'm not any better at sexing poultry than I am at sexing goats.

Turns out our hen was actually a rooster

and became Colonel Cluck at that time.

He's been very lonely so I've been watching

Craig's List for some hens.

I finally asked a co-worker if she could spare just two hens.

She could, and so I picked them up last Friday after school.

I took them to the pen and Colonel Cluck

began scratching and throwing dirt like crazy.

Let's just suffice to say that he's very, very happy.

Bi-Annual Visitor

I have written a lot about the beasties that share our lives,

but I tend to write more about the dogs.

Our most popular post of our blog since we began writing

way back in 2008 was about our cat crew.

About once a week somebody does an internet search

and then clicks on

Tryptophan Overdose.

This is Trey, one of Willowby's (now Mama Kitty) kittens

all stretched out after his indulgence.

He disappeared about a year ago

and showed up in late July or early August.

We had decided that coyotes had gotten him,

but evidently he had found better digs elsewhere.

After a few days he disappeared again just as

quickly as he had appeared.

Two nights ago he popped through the pet door

as if he owned the place and had never been gone.

I have no idea who we are sharing ownership with,

but he seems content to let us know that he is still

alive and well.

Student Intern

This year I am teaching 2nd and 3rd grade as I have done for the past few years.

To say that this class is a challenging bunch is an understatement.

It seems like there isn't enough of me to go around.

When the opportunity arose for me to have a student intern,

I jumped at the chance.

It didn't hurt that I've known said intern since the fifth grade.

This is Mrs. Fast on her first day with the kids.

(She's more proper than I am.)

We had spent the entire day on Sunday planning.

Then I recommended that she not touch anything school

related until Wednesday morning when she began.

Believe it or not, she actually listened to me.

I assured her that she would start out nervous,

but after the first hour she would feel much more at ease.

I threw her right to the wolves.

She was reading to the kids the first day.

Today when I had a student experiencing a melt-down

and I needed to work with him, she got right into the thick of things.

She has taken two reading groups on and is doing guided reading.

The kids just love her.

I expected her to be dead tired the first night.

I was.

I went home, made supper, had a glass of wine and crashed.

She stayed up past 10.

I hear there is news on the television at that time!

And yet she looked like this on Friday ....

..... at the end of the day!

New Year's with Sister Two

This is George, he is a cowboy at the feed lot

His family and friends are making us one of their favorite meals.
He started with a half of pig, cut and trimmed, salt, and some grease. There
could have been a little bit of beer added for flavor.

Stirring the pork with his board.
After it had cooked he melted and browned some sugar.
Then poured over the cooked pork.

The wives came in next with a huge bowl of pico de gallo,
green chili sauce, and dough for fresh tortillas.

She used a wooden press and turned the dough into flattened tortillas.

They placed the dough on a heated grill until the tortillas turned golden.

They worked hard for about an hour. While the rest of us enjoyed the New Year's feast.

Mean while Krista mixed up a pitcher of Cherry Limeade.
We enjoyed a great food, drink, and desserts.

Here is to a great New Year.

Today we spent the day at Brandon and Kristle's.

With our varied schedules we had not been

able to get together to celebrate Christmas.

We had asked what we could bring and Kristle had it all under control,

but humored us and told us we could bring bread and ice cream.

On our way to their house we stopped at the

Evil Empire and picked the two items up.

The first thing I heard upon entering the much

despised big box store was,

"Tttttrrruuuuddddyyyyyyy!"

I turned around to see one of my students grinning his mischievious grin,

and happy as all get out to see me.

That alone makes all of the endless meetings at school bearable.

I quickly grabbed what we needed and then

drove to Kristle and Brandon's new house.

They recently moved into a log cabin.

I loved their new place --- it was so cozy and homey.

Brandon, the boys, and I went out to talk about where he should

put his garden next spring.

Talking with Brandon about gardening transported me back a year or two ...

surely it couldn't be more than that!

The day was beautiful and Nathaniel showed me his "King of the World" pose.

We went in and enjoyed chicken chili and then the kids opened their gifts.

We got Kaleb a dinosaur chair.

The dinosaur looked happier than the kid

but I managed to get a tiny grin.

The older boys were happy with building their heroes,

but the real hit of the day was Trinity's knitting machine.

Okay, so I lied.

The real hit of the day was playing with their new pups.

New Year's Resolutions

and I really am going to try, but I have decided that I have really missed writing the blog so I am going to try to begin writing more regularly again.

It's a great outlet and I do enjoy it, but tend to have trouble coming up with ideas. My kids complain about the same exact thing and I tell them to suck it up and to look at their idea book.

Now I'm going to take my own advice.

I just need one of those darned idea books!

All ideas for topics and stories are welcome.

If you don't make suggestions, then you can't complain when you're bored!

What's One More?

About three or four weeks ago Sister Three called me and asked if I would consider taking a dog that was a known biter. She knew that we had experience with a biter and she was hopeful that we could keep the dog from being put down

. She sent me a picture because she knew that I'd be a goner.

I was a goner once I saw this grin.

This picture was taken by Stephanie Rausser, a world famous photographer.

Sister Three is the office manager for Stephanie and heard of Harry through her.

Sister Three is convinced that I am on my way to becoming a "dog whisperer".

I do have a way with animals and dreamed of becoming a vet when I was in grade school, but I don't think I'm necessarily a whisperer .... although I do whisper my hopes and dreams in their ears as we're cuddling in a chair. Does that count?

At any rate, I talked to my better half and her response was, "What's one more?"
so I emailed Sister Three and she set the wheels in motion.

We met Harry's family in Cheyenne yesterday.

They drove him to us. Can you believe that?

That is true devotion on their part.

After a tearful parting, we headed home.

The beasties didn't quite know what to make of our newest member.

After lots of sniffing and checking each other out, they have all decided that

Harry is okay and have started to try to play.

He is still a bit overwhelmed and doesn't want to play yet,

but he went hiking with me this morning.

Yesterday, somebody found my geocache, but reported that the coordinates were

450 feet off. I figured Chip or Maybelle had carried off the container, so

Maybelle, Harry and I set out to find it.

We checked out the first stage of my multi-cache and it was securely
in place just as I had left it. We trudged on to the second and final stage.

Along the way Harry startled a heron, which in turn perplexed him.

We found the cache and put it in it's rightful place.

Then we hiked to the end of the pasture.

It was beginning to snow a bit, but nothing to speak of.

We got to the end of the pasture just as the wind came up and the snow let loose.
We headed for home and Harry was content to trot beside me.

About halfway home he began to frantically pull at his leash.

I had to jog to keep up with him.
The wind was howling and I didn't hear my better half calling my name,
but Harry did and he hurried me right along.

He's definitely going to be a great addition to the family.

I think we three sisters have mentioned it before that outside our little hometown sits 30 cars stuck in the ground to replicate England's Stonehenge- named Carhenge.

It was built in my junior year of high school and I remember going out to the field that used to be farm ground to get pictures of it for our year book.

The local towns people were split on it: " it was a great work of art in Western Nebraska." Others fell into the group: "it's a junk yard and why would anyone ever stop there and look at a bunch of old cars stuck in the ground."

The first elven years that Keith and I were married our farm was north east of Alliance, and we would drive by Carhenge to and from home. Keith's niece always referred to it as "car wreck." But the thing that always amazed me was that someone was always there pulling in and looking around. Always out of town license plates on their vehicles, usually out of state plates. People liked this? During the summer months it would increase in traffic ten fold.

A summer a couple years back, Sister Three and her family came home for a visit and we went out there so she could get pictures. We walked around and looked around. My kids were amazed as they had never done that. I hadn't walked around since 1987 when I took the year book photos, but it was really neat. You don't get that driving by on the road. You have to stop, get out of your car and walk around.

Last week the Friends of Carhenge announced they could no longer keep enough volunteers out there to man the visitor booth it now housed and would be offering it up for sale.

So if you have $300,000.00 you could purchase a local "land mark" and the sky is the limit on what you would be able to use it for. Some suggestions have been to have a RV camp ground, a go kart race track, and a restaurant on site to help generate revenue. All would be excellent ideas, but now we will wait and see what will happen.

It seems that the trio of sisters have gotten very busy.

I often sit down and begin a new post, only to abandon it.

I discovered that it wasn't nearly as much fun to write the blog after Mom died.

I knew she would comment no matter what and that once she did, Aunt Sue would.

It's hard to believe that it has been almost two years since Mom died and at that time I would never have suspected that Aunt Sue would be gone in two short years.

I have spent the better part of the evening rereading old posts.

I've laughed and I've cried. One might think that I'm feeling very sentimental and nostalgic.

The simple plain truth is that I am procrastinating!

Anything beats doing my math assignment. I mean, assignments.

I have one paper due on Monday, but it's only 3-5 pages long.

Of course I still haven't read the material that the paper is to be written on, but that's nothing.

By the following Saturday I have to have a lesson plan (also 3-5 pages) written out,

a math lesson videotaped and critiqued, and a summation of my student observations written.

Do I have my lesson plan planned?

Of course not.

Do I have my math lesson videotaped?

Of course not.

Do I have my summation of my student observations written?

Of course not .... but I have observed the students.

That's saying something.

So, what am I doing?

I'm dreaming of writing something a bit less stuffy.

Something a bit more uplifting than mathematical learning trajectories.

I'm hoping this might ignite the creative juices .....

but at this point, it's looking doubtful.

We Love New York

We took a little trip to the Big Apple. It was totally different than I expected. I thought people would be really mean because my friend told me when her mom went to New York, a bunch of people yelled at her while standing in line at Dunkin' Donuts because she was taking too long to decide. I purposely avoided Dunkin' Donuts for that reason.

Here are a few shots we took while walking around:

We're all happy and well-rested here since no one jumped on our heads at 6 am.

This was my favorite part. I love Danielle Radcliffe. He's so cute.

Broadway was rubbing off on Andrew and he started doing a little singing in the rain.

My feet are extremely wet in this picture.

What I really needed was a good foot back rub.

I think I need one of those right now too.

Puppy Love

It's true that I think the best smell in the whole

world is puppy breath.

I go out of my way to find puppies.

Show and Tell is always good for

a couple of pups every year.

This year was no exception.

I met this one and was a goner.

The kids had named her Vanelope,

but we renamed her Latte.

You know the old saying, "when it

rains it pours"?

About six months ago, we had adopted Ginger,

a Papillion-cross who had to be caught in a live trap.

She was scared to death of people and

her first placement was upset because she

wouldn't warm up to them.

Naturally she was house-broken, spayed and

had all her shots, but very shy.

She finally decided that Mardell was okay

but she refused to have anything to do with me.

She blessed us while I was gone ....

I am in puppy heaven!

Especially since Ginger lets me hold her pups.

I'm just sorry that I have to go to Grand Island for Math!

Southern Hospitality

We experienced true Southern hospitality all day long.

Once again we started the day with the breakfast buffet that the hotel provides.

I'm going to miss grits when I go home.

I've become rather fond of them.

After breakfast we headed down the Interstate toward Montezuma.

We filled up with gas .... ouch .... and continued

our journey to Andersonville.

Along the way we kept seeing this soft ferny tree.

We finally figured out it was bamboo!

Did you know that there is a species of bamboo

that will grow in Nebraska?!

Our first stop was the Visitor's Center in Andersonville.

We had hit the Visitor Center in Perry last night and they

gave us such good information that we decided to stop.

They also had a unique tree that could make

it's way to Nebraska.

I'm sure my better half would appreciate that!

We went to the National Prisoner of War Museum first.

I thought we'd spend fifteen minutes and then move on to the Andersonville prison site.
Boy, was I ever wrong. We spent almost two hours in the museum.

One of the first displays was designed to give you a vague idea of what it might feel like to initially be captured and taken prisoner.

You're facing a concrete embankment with rifles pointing at and around you.
The slightest movement trips a sensor that starts a recording of people yelling,
shots being fired, directions screamed at you and spotlights dancing around and in your face.
It made the hair on my arms stand up.
It was hard to stand there through the full loop of the recording.

They had information about POWs in every war from the American Revolution to the Gulf War.
I honestly hadn't thought about prisoners of war with the American Revolution nor the War of 1812.

During the Civil War, some of the women would go to the prisons where their
husbands were being held so that they could be together. They ended up nursing the prisoners because there was very little medical care.

It was very educational and interesting and we could have easily spent another two hours or so, but I was on overload so we journeyed outside to the site of the Civil War prison.

It was only 85 degrees so we decided to walk the trail.

Visions of Devil's Tower came back to us as we realized

what goes down must come back up!

We were rewarded with a heron or crane of some sort.

Fortunately, we didn't see any of these:

These were the stockades outside the wall of the prison.

I'm not sure what they used them for because if

a prisoner crossed the "dead line"

with so much as a hand or foot, they were shot

by guards in the pigeon roosts.

This was all the shelter they had from the elements.

45,000 men were imprisoned there.
12,913 died from starvation, disease, and malnutrition.

Captain Henry Wirz was convicted of war crimes after the war
and hanged in Washington D.C.

From there we went to the Andersonville National Cemetery.

During July and August, 1865, Clara Barton, a detachment of laborers and soldiers, and a former prisoner named Dorence Atwater, came to Andersonville cemetery to identify and mark the graves of the Union dead. As a prisoner, Atwater was assigned to record the names of deceased Union soldiers for the Confederates. Fearing loss of of the death record at war's end, Atwater made his own copy in hopes of notifying the relatives of some 12,000 dead interred at Andersonville. Thanks to his list and the Confederate records confiscated at the end of the war, only 460 of the Andersonville graves had to be marked " Unknown U.S. Soldier."

Every guide was helpful in answering questions. They were all friendly and very interested in what had brought us to Georgia and where we were from.

After I get home, I'll write about the Civil War Drummer Boy Museum, the site of Charles Lindbergh's first solo flight and our invitation to meet President and Rosalyn Carter.

Howdy Y'all from the Peach State

Did you know that on a typical day in Atlanta, 280,000 people pass through the airport?

Evidently they all pass through at 4:30 ... which is precisely when we landed.

They try to make your visit more pleasant with sculptures representing Zimbabwe.

It took over an hour for our luggage to arrive at the baggage claim area.

That was okay, because it took us that long as well.

From there we took the Sky Train to the Enterprise office.

They upgraded our ride for the week.

We drove and drove and drove until we reached Perry.

Finding the Ramada Inn was surprisingly simple .... for us!

Big ass signs help.

Our room was inviting ....

... of course, after traveling all day,

this would have been inviting!

Naturally we overslept .... but we still got ready with time for
the breakfast buffet at the Green Derby.

It was delicious .... and even had grits!

We easily found our way to the National Fairgrounds.

I was fascinated with the trees that lined their walkways.

The day was good .... full of informative, but humorous speakers ....

Danny Brassell started and ended our day.
He's every bit as funny as Lester Laminack, so we enjoyed him a lot.

The whole reason we chose this conference was to see Regie Routman again.

She reaffirmed everything I believe about reading.
The best part is that we get to see her again tomorrow .... twice!

We are getting a new science curriculum next year so we
went to hear Dr. Malcom Butler talk about Science Notebooks.

He was very good .... but he helped write the National Geographic series
so it was essentially an hour long commercial.

The only disaster of the day was lunch ....

Vicki and I were number 972 and 973 in line.

Lunch was catered by Sonny's Bar-B-Q.

Lunch started at 11:45.
The keynote speaker was to begin at 12:20.
We were served at 1:07.
The first afternoon session was at 1:15.

Because of the lunch snafu, the keynote speaker was unable to talk.
Needless to say, I doubt that Sonny's will ever be asked to cater
any event by the Dodge Learning Company again.

Fortunately, we have speed eating down to a science.

We attended Lori Oczkus' presentation and learned a great deal.

Unfortunately, most of it involved singing, dancing and acting.
Let's just say Hell hasn't frozen over yet and leave it at that.

Then we bought 50 books.
I know.

You're shocked beyond belief.

On our way to the fairgrounds, I had noticed some trees planted in rows
(Right now Sister 3 is rolling her eyes and muttering something about mom)
and I wanted to check them out further.

My guess is that they are pecan trees, but I'm not sure.

At any rate, we then saw this sign

and that is something we want to take in later this week
so we thought we would check out the hours, what there was to see and do, etc.

Important Note: We have discovered that in the east if there is a sign without miles, you can figure it will add several hours to your trip.

The same holds true for the south.
In Nebraska, we put the number of miles to an attraction ---
we don't just tease you with the name.

We drove forever .... only to come upon a sign that indicated
it was 22 more miles. By that time we were committed to
finding the #*$&#^ place, so we kept going.

In fact, after we found Andersonville, we kept on going
until we reached Plains, Georgia ....

which is famous for ....

We didn't run into the former president, but we intend to
go back on Thursday when the museum and other attractions
are open.

It was a beautiful drive and we saw lots of interesting things ....

A fruit stand .... where we had to buy some peaches.
The gentleman there asked if we'd ever seen melons that big
and I so badly wanted to say "Yes, in Pigeon Forge," but I refrained.

I thought of Sister Two when I saw this sign.

Yes, the Baptists

are alive and well

in Georgia!

We couldn't decide between attending the revival

or going to this hopping night spot,
so we settled on supper instead.

After supper we entertained ourselves in the gift shop ....

where there was a parrot that imitated our laughs.
At first we thought it was motion sensitive and that we kept causing it to laugh by our movements.

However, when we got closer we realized the damn
thing was parroting back all that we said.

If we had more room and hadn't bought 50 books, we would have
bought it. It would be great in our staff meetings.
Or just at the lunch table.
