We are really sorry to disappoint our readers but we won’t be posting on Three Tips a Day for a few days. We had been trying really hard to finish this Twitter Week and make it a success but somehow we’ve hit a unavoidable roadblocks.

We have been trying hard to be regular with our posts, but something urgent has propped up and unfortunately, that has to be attended to. We have no choice but to stay away from regular blogging for a few days.

We promise that as soon as we come back, we’ll continue with the last 3 days of the Twitter Week(for which I have a lot planned for you all!). Till then, keep tweeting and reading the other tips at Three Tips a Day.

Now that you are pretty familiar with tweeting, remember five things that you must do once in a while on Twitter:

Share a link

Share a pic

Retweet

Share some statistics

Share anything!

How to share links on Twitter:

Twitter has a limit of 140 characters which makes sharing of longer links difficult. However Twitter uses the service of TinyURL to automatically shorten long links. You can use some advanced features which TinyURL has to offer(which most tweeters miss!):

1. TinyURL:

Its one of the most famous URL shortening services. You must use it because:

It lets you create really short URLs

It gives your users a chance to preview URLs

It also offers a bookmarklet for faster use

2. SnipURL:

Offers mostly all the services TinyURL offers. It also has a bookmarklet. It lets you customize your shortened URL – so I can have something like snipurl.com/threetips. It also lets you shorten more than one website at once.

3. Doiop:

Another great URL shortening service which lets you add your custom keyword.

4. memURL:

Creates a mnemonic link from your URL. Also offers a bookmarklet.

5. DwarfURL:

Dwarfurl also offers you statistics as to how many times your link was clicked. These tracking and traffic statistics can help you a lot in your business.

Other services:

Shorl

URLtea

TraceURL – the only service that needs you to register and login, but gives you good tracking and traffic results

Tiny.cc

Note: One word of caution, do not post porn, racist, spam or virus-infested links on Twitter. Nothing will lose you followers as much as this.

How to share pictures on Twitter?

1. TwitPic:

Unarguably the favourite tool for sharing pictures on Twitter. Send pictures from a mobile phone to Twitpic and it will be posted on Twitter.

2. TwitPickr:

This is actually a TwitPic tool which posts your pics to Twitter as well as Flickr. This will save a lot of your time for sure!

3. Pixim:

Pixim not only lets you add your pics to Twitter, you can also tag your friends in the pics. It has a lot of social sharing and tracking build into it.

4. Snap Tweet:

Share Flickr pictures on Twitter.

5. Twitr Pix:

Share photos with your status updates.

Other Photo Sharing tools:

MobyPicture

VisualTwitter

TweetPhoto – Still in private beta.

One that does them ALL!

We just crash-landed on one tool which claims to do all of the above – their idea is simple – share everything from one place! Welcome to Tweetube!

Tweetube lets you:

Share webcam videos

Share Photos and Pictures

Share YouTube videos

Share Website URLs

Share via. email, from your phone and also share your links and bookmarks

Check it out here.

How to Retweet?

Retweeting means sharing or repeating interesting tweets by your friends or followers. A retweet is used to pass on links, quotes, pics, witty lines or breaking news on twitter.

Here is how you do it:

Choose the tweet you’ll want to retweet

Type RT @username the update you want to retweet

Yeah, its actually as easy as that

How to find and share Twitter statistics:

Twitter, like any other social network, is a lot about numbers. The recent CNN vs. Aston Kutcher race to a million was a glaring example of the number frenzy.

1. Twitalyzer: One of the best Twitter Statistics and profile analyzer with loads to teach you(previously known as TwitCalc)

We wrote about it once upon a time here and here.

2. TweetStats:

TweetStats is another great service which lets you monitor your Twitter statistics and offers a lot more than that. We did a nice, lengthy piece on it here.

3. Twitter Grader: Gives you your Twitter grade and your Twitter rank.

4. Twitter Counter: Graphs your followers and makes predictions. Gives you loads and loads of statistics.

Other services:

Twinfluence – the interface can be pretty irksome but their statistics are not!

Twitterholic – I think we did mention it here somewhere.

Phew! Now for step no. 5:

When we say ‘Share anything’, we mean it! Share an idea, share a thought, share a feeling, share your opinion, share tricks, memories, solutions, advice – share something on Twitter and you’ll be heard. Go ahead, say something!

We’ve come a quite a long way, and a lot still needs to be told about Twitter. So, Hang on! Also if you are finding these posts even remotely useful, don’t forget to digg it, stumble it, share it and most of all – TWEET it! Happy Twittering!

In the last post we discussed various ways in which you can find friends and followers on Twitter, using search. However sometimes searching can be a pain in the you-know-what. To make things easier we’ll use Twitter directories where you can browse for people really easily.

Here is a list of Twitter directories you must put to use immediately:

1. Twitr:

Twitr claims to be the number 1 Twitter directory and even though we are not quite sure about it, Twitr is pretty useful. You can find popular users in categories like Social media, Tech, blogger, entrepreneur, marketing etc. You can also add yourself to Twitr directory, you’ll need to explain your interests with three hashtags.

2. WeFollow:

WeFollow would be our pick from the Twitter directories. It has a very uncluttered design and works on the same lines as Twitr. You can add yourself to this directory easily. It also gives you a list of top 10 twitterers. Its search results are extremely detailed with lots of information about the user. Definitely worth a try!

Here is what a WeFollow search looks like:

3. Twellow:

Twellow is the yellow pages for Twitter. Though it has a yucky look, like most yellow pages, its quite useful. There are loads of categories to search from and add yourself to. It has a vast user base and you can put it to good use.

4. Just Tweet It:

They say they’ll help you ‘find other Twitter users like you’ but they are much more than a directory. Just Tweet It is like any other Twitter directory just that it has more to offer in terms of useful lists of Twitter tools, twitter news and more.

Location bases Twitter Directories:

If you are looking to find users in your locality, try the location based twitter directories like Geofollow or Localtweeps:

1. Geofollow:

Geofollow is another very useful Twitter directory. Like other directories it will give you:

Option to search by City, State, Zip, Country, Tag, Name, Twitter Username, Keyword

A Google map of tweeple

list of popular users

The location based search in Geofollow is pretty robust and can yield some good results. Such a service is very useful in organizing events like a Tweetup or a Twestival.

2. LocalTweeps:

This service is presently in beta stage and offers search in only US and Canada, though they’ll be adding more soon(they claim)

As we write we hear about another Twitter wiki: TwitterPacks – Twitter Packs is a wiki where people can add themselves and remove others. This is a glaring disadvantage which we noticed. But there are loads and loads of categories to choose from. Go wild!

There are more(the list is never ending):

TrackingTwitter – seems to be concerned with – “brands, media, television, celebrities, and electric artists” – only.

Social Brand Index – Directory of Twitter accounts of companies.

Twitter Link Up – is a very closely knitted directory which is pretty personalized. You’ll have to part with your username and password though.

Who should I follow? – Works a lot like Twubble.

Tweeter Tags – a tagging service which is not user-driven.

Other stuff you could use:

Twitterholic: Claiming that they aren’t associated with Twitter, this is a site which ranks Twitter users on basis of their activity – if you are lucky, you’ll probably be on it.(though I found their statistics a bit out of order, or older to be precise, still this is worth using)

TwitterVision: Uses Google Map API to display random tweets from across the world, even if you don’t use this, its fun to watch!

With this post, we’ve almost exhausted ways to find new friends and followers. If you have some more tricks up your sleeve, do let us know.

So tweet and make friends, be active and be happy(and keep reading Three Tips a Day). Next up in Twitter week, we’ll talk a lot about Twitter apps and more geeky stuff.

In the previous post we talked about the importance of effective communication in building networks on Twitter. But the question remains: Whom must we follow and how can I gather followers?

The answer to this question lies in your Twitter goals. Suppose:

You use Twitter for personal use: Then you’ll try to find your friends on twitter, celebrity accounts, popular blogs, news accounts and people with similar interests

You use Twitter for business use: Then you’ll be looking for experts in your niche, people with common goals, interests, technologies, businesses, specializations etc.

To illustrate our point, we’ll try searching for people who play ‘golf’ and for professional search we’ll look for people associated with ‘CSS’.

Finding Friends using Search and Trends:

Use Twitter Search:

We can use Twitter’s real time search to find people playing golf. Firstly we look for the keyword ‘Golf’.

The results of the above search is:

But I’d like to follow people who play golf or are planning to do so. So I search for ‘I play golf’. The search result will be people who have said ‘I play golf’ in their tweets:

In this way you can use Twitter search for usernames or keywords in real-time tweets. You can then go ahead and add people who have similar interests like you.

This help in many ways:

You get access to tweets that you can use

You can provide assistance to the person because you have a common area of interest

It is easier to strike a conversation

Apart from the generic twitter search, you can also search by user name and hashtags. There are several other services which lets you find people based on several keywords:

Twitseeker:

Twitseeker lets you search for terms in tweets as well as Twitter profiles and then sorts results by frequency of keyword occurrence. It will however require your Twitter ID.

Flaptor Search:

Flaptor Search is another Twitter search tool based on the Twitter API. Its got one of the most pleasing interfaces we’ve ever seen.

Twitterfall:

Twitterfall will give you a rush of Tweets in the form of a waterfall based on your search terms. Every search result is accompanied by a lot of options like retweet, follow, watch on Twitter etc. Extremely usable.

Twubble:

Twubble will take your Twitter username and find you people whom you can follow from the friends and followers list of your friends. It lets you expand your network from within your network, so that you have a common thread with your new friends.

Twitscoop:

Twitscoop shows you popular Twitter trends and lets you track conversations, conferences and updates based on your keywords.

Whostalkin:

Who’s Talkin searches for keywords not only across Twitter but across other social media platforms like blogs etc.

In our next post we’ll talk about finding followers from Twitter directories. Till then check the Twitter search options out and add some new friends.

Now that you have learnt the basics of Twitter and (hopefully) have built your Twitter profile, its time to build your Twitter network. In case you still have some confusion in using Twitter, here are the links to Day 1’s posts:

What is Twitter?

Twitter basics for beginners

Basic terms and features of Twitter

Now getting down to the task, the process of building an effective twitter network can be divided into four stages:

Make sense when you tweet

Find people whom you like

Let people find you

Repeat the above three

How to make create an impact on Twitter?

Twitter is another form of communication and like other ways of communication it needs to be effective to make any impact. Twitter is like a huge classroom without a teacher, so some people are talking to each other, some are talking to themselves and others are talking in a group – without any moderation.

Imagine yourself in such a classroom and try to emerge as one of the popular students. The same approach will lead you to a more effective Twitter presence.

Some important things to remember that will help you in conquering the attention of Twitter users worldwide are:

Look Good: Looking good is very essential. Just like shabbily dressed students would often go unnoticed in class, similarly a shabby looking twitter profile will largely go unnoticed. In order to look good follow these steps:

Choose a nice twitter handle: Choose a twitter username(called handle) which identifies with you or your work/niche or something which stands out of the box.(this is immaterial if you are Lance Armstrong or Al Gore, but cool_guy_10 sounds too lame to make any mark on Twitter

Put a profile picture: Putting a profile picture goes a long way in connecting with your visitors. Adding a profile picture makes a profile more genuine and adds a personal feeling to it. It also tells the visitor about your creativity and personality(avoid putting a celebrity’s picture, unless you are a celebrity yourself, or your account is a fan account)

Complete your bio and profile: Complete your profile and add a link to a blog/website/profile on a social networking site which has more details about you or your work. This tells the visitors about your interests, field of work and other social parameters. It is very difficult to read someone from his tweets, but a good profile, or a blog can change the mind of any visitor who was just about to ignore you.

Get a good Twitter background: Twitter provides you with some custom backgrounds, however there are several services available on the internet which will help you in making a customized background(they are lined up somewhere down this week, we hope to see you here). By doing this you can add a lot of creativity and information to an otherwise wasted background. Some Twitter profiles with amazing backgrounds are:

Make sense while talking(tweeting rather): As we earlier said, Twitter attracts a lot of noise. You can either add to it or convert noise into useful communication. Successful tweeting is an art to be mastered by yourself, there is no one-size-fits-all thumb rule, but we did cook up some recipe for you. The important components of a tweet are:

Quality(error free, friendly, focussed, non-abusive, lucid language – NO ALL CAPS here)

Quantity(the more you tweet the more your chances of staying on the public timeline, however do no overload or spam, we don’t want to know a ball-by-ball update of a game, we really don’t! – Quality precedes quantity here)

Timing(tweeting in peak times, during famous launches for example, is better. its easier to start a conversation when such an oppurtunity strikes)

Information(links, images, quotes, news – these tools add value to your tweet and often have the privilege of being re-tweeted)

Use @replies so that your tweets show up when people search for their @replies(you might get a reply from Kim Kardashian and some retweets too if your tweet is really good)

Use hashtags to classify your tweets and make them searchable

Simplicity is often important too. The KISS(Keep It Simple Stupid) principle rules here too.

Using abbreviations like BRB, LOL and more are also advisable to breach the 140 character limit

URL shorteners come in handy too – expect to hear more from us on that soon!

Make good conversation: Make sure you engage in useful conversation by:

Helping people out if they are looking for help(but avoid telling people things you’re yourself not sure of)

Retweet if you like someone’s tweets, retweet links and @replies

Reply to people who talk to you and send direct messages once in a while for a private greeting or piece of conversation

Don’t talk about petty things, avoid discussing bodily functions(eating could be an exception)

Share some insight or personal experience or some useful link(from your blog or anywhere else) once in a while

DON’T SPAM

Shut up if people are not in a mood to listen to you – accept that everyone has bad days

Avoid racist remarks

If you have auto-responses, make sure you follow them up once in a while with a more personal direct message

Don’t be wary of forming relationships – you can always unfollow people later!

Don’t just talk – take out some time to listen, space your tweets, read past tweets – there is a very thin line between noise and conversation

Vary a bit – some emotional talk from a geek can be a good surprise and can get you many followers and conversations.

Know what you are using Twitter for: Understand what you want from Twitter, whether you’ll use it for personal or professional use or both. Understanding your Twitter Goals can take you a long way in building a superb network on Twitter.

I read somewhere that Twitter is better than email in the sense that it is more open and public. You need not think twice while tweeting someone, while sending an email can be tricky business, something very personal.

We’ve talked at length about how to talk or rather tweet effectively on Twitter. Once you understand the basics of this communication, you are ready to search for people, which we’ll cover in the next post.

At the end of the Twitter week, will publish loads and loads of links and resource, replete with articles to help you master everything that you’ve read here today by one of the best in the business. Till then keep learning and keep twittering.

We’ll be waiting to hear from you. Send in your comments and do subscribe to our RSS feed.

Here is a list of Twitter feature and basic terminology which will help you understand Twitter better.

# sign
The hash sign is used to mark a word as a keyword, which denotes a “hashtag”. We’ll tell you what a hashtag means just down this article. So if your Tweet(a Twitter update) relates to a popular quote, you’ll add the #quote hashtag to denote it as a quote.

@ reply
The @ sign is used to indicate that you are replying to a specific username. For example, if you want to pass a message Barack Obama, you’ll send your message to @BarackObama. Remember that @replies are public, so will feature in the timeline as well as homepage and profile. If you want to send a private message, send a DM(direct message)

140 character limit
Twitter messages are meant to be short because it was designed to support mobile devices. However you can circumvent this limit by using services like URL shorteners(something we’ll cover later this week)

Block
This refers blocking a particular user name from following your tweets. You block someone by clicking on their profile and choosing “Block” on the right sidebar. This is usually done in case of spammers or bots following your profile. Or if you really dislike someone.

Direct Messages
Direct Messages are sent from twitter by entering d RECIPIENTUSERNAME Text of Message. You can read about sending a direct message here.

DM
This stands for Direct Message, which is the Twitter equivalent of E-mail. You may only send direct messages to those following you. Learn how to send a DM here. Keep in mind that you cannot send Direct Messages to people that are not following you, even if you are following them. This is Twitter’s built-in spam protection. Direct Messages are also limited upto 140 characters.

Failwhale
The whale logo that pops up when the Twitter service crashes. Twitter usually suffers a lot of downtime due to overcapacity, especially during product launches or breaking news. They are trying to overcome it but we still meet the failwhale a lot.

FAV
You can favourite a tweet by typing FAV in all caps plus their username. This will automatically favourite the last tweet from that user.

Feed
Your posts on Twitter are commonly referred to as your “Twitter feed”, or “timeline”. People can subscribe to your updates through the Twitter RSS feed.

Followers
People who follow your Twitter updates.

Hashtags
Hashtags denote popular topics or trends on Twitter. Suppose you want to share a popular quote on Twitter, then you mark your tweet with #quote. So that in real time trend, people looking for quotes can search it. This feature is used for trending and grouping.

You can visit Hashtags.org to know the popular hashtags and trends:

Locking Your Profile
You can “lock” your profile so that only friends can see your updates by scrolling down to the bottom of your “Settings” tab on the Twitter website and clicking the box beside “Protect My Updates”. This may deprive you of followers who would have otherwise followed you based on keywords in your posts and isn’t advised for general use. You would only want this if you wanted to use Twitter, but need to avoid public communication for a specific reason.

Microblog
Twitter is a microblogging platform. A microblog is a shorter and usually more immediate version of a blog.

NUDGE username
Reminds one of your friends to update.

Public Timeline
The timeline of all public Tweets. You can see the public timeline here.

RT/Retweeting:

This stands for retweeting, the process whereby you repost someone else’s Twitter post on your feed. This is done by typing RT @username/ RT #username and typing the message. This is done to share popular links, witty lines or news.

Search
Go to search.twitter.com to search tweets for a specific keyword. Also, http://twitter.com/invitations/find_on_twitter will allow you to search by name.

An update on Twitter or a Twitter post is called a Tweet.

Tweeps/Tweeples
A cluster of friends on Twitter. Frequently used to address all of your followers at once, e.g.”Morning, Tweeples!”.

Tweeter
A Twitter user.

Twittering
To send a Twitter message or a Tweet.

Twitterstream
The Twitter timeline, both your own and the public one.

Twitosphere/Statusphere/Twitverse
The community or universe of Twitter users.

Twittworking
Networking with other Twitter users.

Twoops
Sending a private message to Twitter by accident.

Twoosh
A full 140 character Twitter message.

Twype
Typing a Twitter message.

If you’ve never heard of Twitter before this, we’ll give you a quick guide on how to start. Go to Twitter.com and click on the ‘Get Started – Join!’ button:

On the next screen, you’ll be required to fill in your account details. You must be at least 13 years of age to use Twitter. You can choose a Twitter display name (also called the Twitter Handle). You Twitter url will thus become http://www.twitter.com/your_handle:

You can then check which of your friends are on Twitter from your Yahoo, Gmail, MSN, AOL and Hotmail contacts. This step is very useful in finding your first friends and followers:

If unluckily none of your friends are on Twitter(which is highly unlikely), don’t fret. On the next page, you’ll be offered suggestions to follow some of the popular Twitter users. The likes include Britney Spears, Demi Moore, popular websites like CNN Breaking News, Woot, The New York Times and other celebrities like Lance Armstrong, Evan Williams(CEO, Twitter) and more. We even found Coldplay there.

Click finish and you’ll be taken to your twitter homepage:

On the right hand sidebar you can various statistics on the number of people you’re following, your follower count and your updates. (if you don’t know what an update is, you’ll do so pretty soon) Below it are Twitter’s notifications of various twitter apps and services.

In the lower part of the sidebar, you’ll see the various update management tools like your @replies, direct messages, favorite tweets, everyone(the link to the public timeline) and a mosaic of your followers.

@replies: Whenever someone replies to your profile on twitter, he does so by @username. The @replies link filters all the @replies you receive to show who’s talking to you

Direct Messages: Also called DM these are like 140-characters long messages which are delivered to your inbox and which do not form a part of the public timeline. There are private messages.

Everyone: Everyone link takes you to the public timeline which is a real time display of tweets from around the world.

Status Updates for devices: Twitter was originally intended to be focused on mobile devices also(which explains the 140-characters limit to some extent). You can configure

RSS Feeds: You can also configure the RSS feeds for your Twitter account. (Click here if you don’t know what RSS means?)

Now for some profile tweaking: Go to the Settings tab on the top right.

You can now change your profile picture.

You can also change your Twitter Background:

Later this week, we’ll tell you about ways to create your personalized Twitter background and make that awesome first impression.

Once you are set in, you can now find some people or follow the suggested users. People follow you back if they like you(or your updates) and you start building up your community.

Making your first update:

Type your message(upto 140 characters) and click on update. To send an @reply, type @username and type your message. Alternatively, you’ll notice a small arrow next to the user’s tweet, clicking on it will auto-fill the @reply entry.

How to mark favorite tweets?

Click on the star next to the tweet to mark it as a favorite tweet.(the @reply arrow is just below this star)

How to send a Direct Message(DM)?

Click on the Direct Messages link in the sidebar

It shows the DM inbox and the DM’s you’ve sent

Choose a user from the drop down list

Type a message and click send. Its as easy as that.

One of the most difficult things to do in a Twitter guide is to define Twitter. That’s because Twitter means different things to different people. At the heart of it – Twitter can be called a ‘micro blogging’ service under the umbrella of social networking tools centered around the basic question – ‘What are you doing?’

We’ll begin our Twitter week with an attempt to answer the question ‘What is Twitter?‘ We aim to make the meaning of twitter clear to the beginners and also to discover different interpretations of twitter from the experts. We welcome all comments and feedback in order to understand Twitter better and use it effectively.

Let the joyride begin!

To give you a better idea of Twitter, here are few definitions of Twitter from around the web:

Wikipedia:

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users’ updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user’s profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

Twitter.com:

What? Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

Why? Because even basic updates are meaningful to family members, friends, or colleagues—especially when they’re timely.

Eating soup? Research shows that moms want to know.

Running late to a meeting? Your co–workers might find that useful.

Partying? Your friends may want to join you.

BBC:

Twitter is an online service for letting people know what you’re up to at any time of day or night.

Summing up:

Summarizing the available information about Twitter we can safely conclude that Twitter is:

A micro-blogging service – collection of really short(limited to 140 characters) posts

A social networking tool

A informal collaboration service

A tool for quick information sharing

A great way to keep in instant touch with friends and acquaintances

A community and relationship building tool

An extremely powerful marketing platform

A way to take branding further

A medium for promotion

A tool for breaking news and trends

A tool for idol-worship

A real time medium of communication

MOST IMPORTANTLY – Twitter can be everything you want it to be!

Twitter in Plain English:

Watch this Twitter video here by Commoncraft titled ‘Twitter in plain english’ – http://www.threetipsaday.com/2009/04/what-is-twitter-in-plain-english/

This will definitely clear any doubts that you still have regarding how Twitter works!

Having understood what Twitter is, in the next post we’ll try to understand how Twitter works, and basic Twitter terminology and features. We hope you’ll be around for company.

We look forward to hearing from you – your comments and feedback are welcome.

P.S.: We just discovered an article on TechCrunch on the hype around Twitter: Read here.
