Jane Van Ryan

Author Bob McCarty tells a searing story of a perversion of justice. Army Special Forces Sgt. 1st Class Kelly A. Stewart swore to protect his country only to suffer indignity at the hands of a military court. In this classic case of he said/she said, it is clear that “the system” abrogated its responsibility to a man in uniform at the pinnacle of his career because it was more interested in political correctness than the truth. This book is an excellent read for everyone who supports our troops. Could a movie be in McCarty’s future?

I respect Van Ryan’s opinion for many of the same reasons I respect that of Richard Miniter, who recently offered a glowing review of the book.

Like Miniter, Van Ryan is an author [See The Seduction of Miss Evelyn Hazen].  In addition, however, her diverse career in media has included work as an award-winning broadcast journalist — including several years experience in Washington, D.C. — and more than two decades of success as a communications executive.  In short, she knows how to communicate.

According to the article, journalist Franz Feyder testified in court about the investigation he conducted that led him to believe Arid Uka, the 21-year-old man charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, had spent time in Bosnia-Herzegovina prior to the shooting spree and, while there, was likely involved with radical Islamists.

Why would attorneys on both sides discount the journalist’s testimony?  Most likely, because German government officials are pressuring them so as to appease Muslims in the country and avoid having Uka being labeled a “radical Islamic terrorist.”  Political correctness.

Here’s the “once again” part:  Similar political pressures resulted in the court-martial conviction of Army Green Beret Sgt. 1st Class Kelly A. Stewart during three days in August 2009.

German government officials pressured U.S. military officials to “throw the book” at Stewart despite the fact that his accuser, a 29-year-old young German woman, could produce no physical evidence or eyewitnesses to corroborate her claims that the highly-decorated combat veteran had raped and kidnapped her in his Stuttgart hotel room a year earlier.  As a result, Stewart ended up being convicted on several counts, sentenced to eight years in prison and branded as a sexual offender for the rest of his life.

On Friday, I ran into John Brunner (photo above left), a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, when both of us were speaking to a local Republican gathering.  The former Marine officer told me he had purchased a copy of my book at Amazon.com, in part, because he was very concerned about the detrimental impact of things such as political correctness and untenable rules of engagement on our troops in uniform.

This evening, I learned from a good friend that a good friend gave Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich (photo above right) a copy of the book during a campaign event in Florida.

Brunner and Gingrich join 35 members of the House Armed Services Committee among the ranks of politicians who’ve received copies of my book.

Hopefully, some of them will join former Green Beret Sgt. 1st Class Kelly A. Stewart, the man whose life is chronicled in the Three Days In August, in his fight for a new trial and a chance to clear his name.

Sergeant Wuterich was on trial for manslaughter and related charges for his role in the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians in 2005.  After spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on legal fees, seven other Marines, including LTC Jeffrey Chessani, either had the charges against them dropped in exchange for their testimony or were acquitted entirely during courts-martial proceedings.

Though the collective prosecution of the Haditha Marines can only be described as a “Charlie-Foxtrot” at best, it pales in comparison to what Army Sgt. First Class Kelly A. Stewart went through during three days in August 2009.
