This month at Threshold Studios the multi-talented Sophie Auster finished mixing a six song EP with Producer Jeremy Sklarsky. Sophie is the daughter of well known Brooklyn author Paul Auster, and Sophie is a fabulously talented singer, songwriter, and lyricist in her own right. We are very much looking forward to seeing this awesome effort released!

Threshold Recording Studios NYC- Perfect for Singers, Songwriters and Bands!

Here are some of the highlights of our recent artist development productions-

Mike Billiot
Always a pleasure to co-produce with the über-talented Heather Holley at Threshold Studios. Early this summer we completed two songs with singer and songwriter Mike Billiot from New Orleans. The beats were co-produced by Andrey Jandy Prudnikov from the Ukraine. Check out his youtube page which already has hundreds of thousands of views. Heather, James and Jeremy have been doing quite a few projects together lately. If you are interest in working with us as a team, and we cover a lot of ground in a unique way as a team, make sure you give us a call.

Alana Kessler
Produced another beautiful song with Alana Kessler called "Holding On To You." We will definitely be posting this one after it comes back from mastering. Check out Alana's yoga studio at Sangha Yoga Sala.

Brett Macdonald
What an incredibly productive 3 day session with Brett Macdonald of Virignia! Featuring Tom Welsch (Rock of Ages) on bass and Dan Barman on drums. Really looking forward to sharing some of these songs.

DESSI!
Awesome August co-production sessions with the fabulous Dessi - co-written and co-produced with Heather Holley, Jeremy Sklarsky and James Walsh. Dessi has such an amazing voice! Special touches by Oli Rockberger on keys, and Dave Eggar on cello.

Seems like a million years ago, and just like yesterday....

The friends and family of Jeff Buckley included some

history of Jeff's relationship with the Threshold Recording Studios facilities in the latest JBIN (Jeff Buckley International Newsletter). Jeff and his band rehearsed here at our facility on 41st for many years, right up until his trip to Memphis where we lost his physical presence on this earth.

I've never really gone too far into the subject in the written history of our studio, missing him more as a fellow musician and friend -and choosing instead to embrace all the new related friends we have made over the years instead.

Jeff, was Jeff... Intensely unique and all so rare...

One of the occasional pleasures i have is relating the history to artists that come in to the studio that cite Jeff as an inspiration in their musical development. Having rehearsed across the hall from him for all those years I have a couple of stories i like to share:)- and it is always a great moment to connect with artists on that level.

What I would share at the moment is that the control room at Threshold was partially tuned to Jeff's music during the design and construction by Aj, myself and Steve Koontz- and the weekend Threshold Studios partners AJ and I closed the doors to let the paint and floors dry before our grand opening, we spun Jeff's music on loop for the 4 days we spent at the beach dreaming what the studio would eventually become. The 'MUSIC AINT NO PRODUCT' writing on the wall had to be covered when we built the floated control room, and no one can say for sure who was the author, but it was one of those things we knew was a part of Jeff's time in the space, and couldn't let it go without a picture. I think this is the first time i have published it. The artwork on the inside of the main studio door also is from Jeff's era.

Jeff's legacy continues at our studio through this day, some of them secrets:) including our ongoing mentor, facility and studio relationship with Road Recovery, founded by former Jeff Buckley manager and road manager Jack Bookbinder and Gene Bowen. RR does such great work, and having been conceived while Jeff was on this plain, we know he would have approved:) I also share a special relationship with Jeff's mom, my close friend and Road Recovery Co- Board Member Mary Guibert. Love you Mary:)

In our daily production and recording projects we also stay in touch and work with many of the musicians that played with Jeff- including Parker Kindred mentioned in the JBIN article. (Parker makes cymbals, and me, cry when he plays...) Special thanks to Jay Matsueda for penning the piece included in the newsletter. All special players and wonderful people. We are humbled to be able to share a small part of the legacy, even more humbled that it continues to translate into the vibe of the studio, staff and productions- and encourage everyone to stay in touch with Jeff's music through his authorized website JeffBuckley.com. Keep an eye out for the authorized Jeff Buckley biopic movie being developed by Mary. Don't be confused by imitators!

Dave Eggar is always up to something interesting. Last night he was in along with Heather Holley (Christina Aguilara) producing a track for a very talented young singer Jacob Baine Fields that he met in southern Virginia while touring through Appalachia. They'll be back to finish off the song this weekend and we hope to have many more sessions with Dave.

An amazing couple of days with rock legends Mick Jones and Foreigner in Threshold's NYC Recording Studio A. With Jeff Pilson and Mick Jones of Foreigner producing, Jeremy Sklarsky engineered the mostly overdub sessions for their upcoming acoustic album. Among the many things the band has been working on is an unplugged album of many of their most well known songs and we were thrilled to be a part of it.

Very excited this is being released. In anticipation of their impending North American tour with Foals, Freelance Whales and Foals are releasing a 7-inch vinyl split. Both songs are covers - with Foals covering Mafia's "One" while Freelance Whales lent their version of Devo's Girl U Want." The track was recorded and mixed by Jeremy Sklarsky at Threshold Recording Studios NYC.

Freelance Whales were back at Threshold Recording Studios NYC this month. This band is so great, it is always a pleasure to have them in the house. Big chunks of their highly regarded debut "Weathervanes" were done here at the studio with seasoned Threshold Producer, Engineer, Multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Sklarsky at the helm.

We'll post a link to the song they recorded here upon its release, which should come sometime during their upcoming tour with Foals (which takes them across the continent including a co-headlining show at Terminal 5!).

Threshold Studios - New Plugins and gear

We've got some new Waves plugins recently and have been really enjoying them here at the studio. At the top of the pile are the CLA Classic Compressors, featuring software models of Chris Lord-Alge's blue and black 1176's, an LA-2A, and LA-3A. They sound quite excellent. The studio already has 2 hardware blue plate 1176's, but having an unlimited supply in plugin form is quite convenient.

Our upgraded Waves bundle includes the Neve modeled V-Series. The clear winner here is the VEQ3, which is a model of the Neve 1073 EQ module.

Just a week prior we added two Neve 1073 LB preamps to our 500 series rack and been getting very positive reviews from engineers working in the room.

So between the CLA Compressors, the SSL bundle, and the Neve bundle (plus, ya know, some real hardware API and Daking EQ's, 1176's, and Summit, DBX, and Daking Compressors) the mix room is coming together nicely.

We've had a a busy 2011 recording at Threshold Studios. Here are some of the early highlights:

- Big Mosey

Brooklyn based blues-rock band was in to record their debut EP entitled "Homeward at Daybreak." A unique sound with an even more unique vocalist. It's been too long since we did some serious guitar work so it was a lot of fun breaking out the Marshalls...

- Neil Perlman was in to record some Scottish-jazz fusion! His piano jazz trio featuring renowned Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser. All these guys had some serious chops.

- The UN Jazz Band (working title). We recorded a small jazz ensemble composed of United Nations Staffers, including players from Madagascar, South Africa, Sweden, and Austria. The group's leader, Herbert Grubmair mentioned long time friend of the studio and fellow Austrian Hans Glawischnig. Hebert said about Threshold, "If it's good enough of Hans it's good enough for me!" We hope to have them back soon.

Mission Vertigo in Threshold Recording Studios Control Room

Newly formed Mission Vertigo was in Threshold Studios to record their debut singles "Shaken" and "Enjoy The Fireworks" with Jeremy Sklarsky producing and engineering. The band is comprised of Berklee College of Music students including Jesse Devine of The Ian Walsh Band. These guys are serious players! Congratulations to our artist Todd Alsup for landing in the Top 5 at the SongCircle songwriting and performance competition held in NYC this month. There were thousands of submissions- top 5 was a nice win.

Todd wowed the crowd with a version of 'How I'm Made' that just blew the doors off the place- prompting one of the other finalists to proclaim:

"I saw Todd Alsup last week, and I’ve never felt this way about a triple threat since Billy Joel. Read between the lines on this one — it could be this generation’s political anthem"

Nicholas' song "Safe In My Arms, produced at Threshold Recording Studios NYC with James Walsh and Jeremy Sklarsky, has made it into two top 10 lists on ourstage.com, including the Subway Fresh Artists National Competition. Atomic Tom 2 Million VIEWS! - Sometimes you do Always Get What You Want!

Congratulations to Threshold Studios Alumni ATOMIC TOM on their recent YouTube viral video success with their fab 'B Train' performance of 'Take Me Out'. In 2007 Producer James Walsh and his team recorded several songs with the band including 'You Always Get What You Want' and 'Dirty Girl'- playing a small but vital role in helping spin off the career of singer Luke White while he was getting his independent footing in the NYC's LES music scene. 'You Always Get What You Want' eventually landed the boys a well paid and vital AMC commercial trailer placement and both songs recorded and produced here at the studio enjoyed considerable success in various MTV show placements.

Quality recording and productions certainly provided some of the ammo they needed to build a strong team and eventually land a label deal- and now this smashing 1.7 million view success! They've been busting their butts for several years now and deserve this opportunity. Support them!

Freelance Whales - Twitter Video Goes Viral

In 2008/9 Jeremy Sklarsky produced the Freelance Whales debut album "Weathervanes" record at Threshold Studios. Twitter got a hold of the record and used the opening track in a video to promote the new twitter platform. A few days later, the clip had over 2 million views. They've also had songs on "Grey's Anatomy," HBO's "Bored To Death," "Chuck," and "Ugly Betty." It goes to show you what kind of licensing opportunities and exposure can be available to the right band with quality production. Jeremy is currently looking for the next big thing. Is that you?

In 2009/ 2010 Threshold Recording Studios in NYC began hosting the NY Times POPCAST series hosted by Ben Sisario. Recent sessions have included The Black Keys, Grace Potter, Junip featuring Jose Gonzalez, Josh Ritter, Jonsi from Sigur Ros, The Morning Benders. It has been awesome to have such varied and talented people come through the studio. You can check out POPCAST here on the NYTimes website or on iTunes.

Eric Lewis - Smells Like Success!

We must admit it has been a wonderful journey watching Threshold Studios client Eric Lewis receive much deserved recognition for his awe inspiring RockJazz stylized compositions in the last few years. Eric is a well loved fixture here at the studio when he is in town and we have had the pleasure of witnessing the birth of some of these fabulous performances- from his TED conference rooooaoarrarring bash to playing for the President and Mrs. Obama at the White House. Denis Leary Comes to Threshold; Not An A**hole

In addition to being a hilarious comedy band, Denis Leary and the Enablers have been big supporters of Road Recovery. Here’s a shot of Denis and the band with producer Jeremy Sklarsky showing off some of the Enablers merch they donated to Road Recovery.

Denis and friends were down at Threshold Studios tracking a couple of songs to be released in conjunction with their comedy special, filmed at Town Hall in NYC. The tracks will be released on Comedy Central Records and will be available for download on iTunes when the special airs on TV sometime this winter. Keep a look out for "Bless Me Father," "The D-bag Song," and "F**k You," all recorded here at Threshold Studios.
