Superbly situated in a spacious and sunny historic building, Restaurant Holder has all the energy and appeal of a bustling French bistro. The edifice itself—a bank built in the nineteenth century by renowned Montreal architect Luc Laporte—has been converted to take advantage of the open spaces, tall windows, and classic architecture.

It must be said that the acoustics of the interior (combined with the continually crowded character of a bistro that is always booked to capacity) make for a clamorous and vibrant environment. It may not be your choice for a quiet or intimate dinner, but the animated energy of the place is practically contagious.

The Restaurant Holder menu offers all the best of the time-tested traditions of Bistro cooking. Relish the hearty and flavorful soups, salads, appetizers, entrees, and desserts, not to mention a tasteful wine list. Whether you intend to enjoy a lunch or dinner—or even the weekend brunch, you will need to make a reservation to ensure a place at this popular dining spot.

Check it out here.

Top 3 Ways to Drink Whiskey

Any Irishman will tell you that there’s no “bad” way or “wrong” way to drink whiskey. The real wrongdoing, they would tell you, would be not to drink it. As one Irishwoman jokes, her idea of “alcohol abuse” would be leaving a good whiskey untouched. With that frame of reference in mind, there are certainly a number of ways for you to enjoy your whiskey, and these three are among the best.

Drinking Whiskey Thoroughly and Thoughtfully

Some folks like to get the most out of their whiskey-drinking by savoring every aspect of the experience. Particularly when the liquor in question is a well aged single malt—expensive as well as exquisite—it would seem a shame to rush through the enjoyment. A connoisseur luxuriates in every sensation the whiskey affords, beginning with the sight of the amber angles of light through the glass, and the smoky scent of the liquid.

Tasting whiskey is almost a different activity from drinking it. Try a small sip of the liquid and move it delicately around your mouth. Experts refer to the sensation as “mouth feel.” When you swallow the sip, you can often feel the burn or the glow move downward, and a good whiskey will leave a lingering flavor in your mouth (a sensation experts call the “finish”) even after you have swallowed it.

Whiskey is notoriously difficult to treat in a “tasting” manner, in contrast to other alcoholic drinks like wine, because whiskey packs a heavier punch in terms of alcohol content. A taster’s judgment can become rapidly impaired—but if you are merely seeking to eke the most enjoyment from your experience, you don’t need to get hung up on the procedures of proper tasting protocol. Just take the time to appreciate your drink.

Drinking Whiskey Neat

“Drinking it Neat” refers to whiskey undiluted by water or ice or mixers or flavors. The Irish refer to whiskey as uisce beatha—a Gaelic phrase that translates to mean “water of life.” Many people see no need to add anything in order to enjoy their whiskey, and purists go so far as to think it’s somewhat sacrilegious to adulterate the liquor by adding anything into it.

Drinking Whiskey

If you are not a purist and you’re interested in some different tastes and experiences, there are many mixed whiskey drinks to try. Whatever your taste in drinks—from sweet to sour to fruity to coffee—there is a whiskey recipe to fit the bill. If you really want to find the perfect drink for you, enlist a bartender to help you try some different tastes. A good bartender will ask about the things you like and determine some likely candidates for you to try.

At the end of the day (sometimes literally), the best way to drink whiskey may be simply to pour a glass and enjoy it in a place you love. Sip some whiskey in your back yard hammock, or sitting by a campfire, or in your favorite chair at home. Simply enjoy it.

This unique alcoholic beverage is distilled in a Mexican village using traditional brewing methods that result in a one-of-a-kind drinking experience. The primary component of Sombra Mezcal is the heart of the agave plant, which is also used for making tequila.

In this case, the agave hearts are baked on an oak fire in a rock-lined pit, covered with mats of banana leaves. The baked hearts are ground with a millstone, fermented with wild yeast and spring water, and then doubly distilled in a still made of copper. The resulting beverage is sweet, warm, and spicy in your mouth, with overtones of wood smoke and citrus, followed by a salty and fruity finish.

February can be a tough month for guys. There’s the pressure of Valentine’s Day if you have a sweetheart to please, and the dead certainty that you’ll have to sit through at least one romantic “chick flick” to celebrate that Hallmark holiday. This February, though, you can balance things out by enjoying some great action and comedy new releases. Here are five films for guys to check out in theaters this February.

Bullet to the Head—Feb 1

This one just came out on the first, starring Sly Stallone as a New Orleans hitman. Bobo (Stallone’s character) is out for revenge on his partner’s murderer (Jason Momoa, known for his roles in Stargate: Atlantis, Game of Thrones, and Conan the Barbarian). After some confrontational run-ins with Officer Kwon (Kang Sung), who has been chasing the same guy, Bobo and Kwon form an unlikely, albeit prickly, alliance to achieve their shared goal. Stallone has never ceased to be fun to watch, and this project by the filmmaker who brought us 48 Hours is another enjoyable showcase.

Warm Bodies—Feb 1

This movie brings an engaging new twist to the “zombie genre,” even if—or perhaps especially if—you’re starting to feel like zombies have been done to death. (Or should we say past death?) Fans of zombie mythology will enjoy the fresh approach, and those who are more lukewarm on zombies will appreciate the humor being brought to bear at times on the genre itself.

Side Effects—Feb 8

Another dark drama from Steven Soderbergh, Side Effects explores the deep psychological disturbances brought about in a woman’s life by the side effects of a prescription anti-depressant. This thriller—involving murder, legal drama, twisted romantic relationships, and suspense—is scoring rave reviews from those who have previewed it.

A Good Day to Die Hard—Feb 14

Maybe you are one of the lucky guys who will actually get to see this film on its Valentine’s Day release, instead of getting dragged to some sticky-sweet sappiness like “Safe Haven.” Bruce Willis is back for a fifth installment of his Die Hard franchise, still kicking butt and making us laugh. You know you’re not going to miss this one—and if you’re one of the fortunate few who get to see it on opening day; you can rub it in the faces of the guys who suffered through the show in the theater next door! Oh, and one more bonus: you get to watch this one on the giant IMAX screen.

Snitch—Feb 22

The Rock (sure, he’s billed as Dwayne Johnson these days—but let’s face it, he’s always going to be “The Rock” to most of us) rocks this film in his role as an undercover narcotics informant, motivated by the need to get his wrongfully-accused son off the hook on charges of dealing drugs. In addition to its action-packed thriller of a plot, there’s a star-studded cast with names and faces you’ll easily recognize.

All in all, February is looking like a good month at the theater!

Set at the epicenter of Montreal’s downtown hotspot, the Deville Dinerbar attracts adventurous diners with its whimsical and charismatic décor, its appealing menu choices, its generous portions and reasonable prices, and its high standards of service. Imagine the marriage of a classic old-style diner with a chic upscale eatery—that’s the Deville!

Even the cooking manages to bridge the apparent gap between the “lunch counter” fare of yore and a more modish menu of modern meal options. Philly cheesesteak? Sure—but here it’s served in the form of spring rolls. Tacos? Absolutely—though these are prepared with ahi tuna. Mac and cheese? Of course—yet the Deville delivers it delicately tucked into wontons. The menu headings may be reminiscent of a 1950s lunch counter, but every dish is crafted with a clever twist on the classic café cuisine.

The undisputed place for Montreal diners to score poutine is the legendary restaurant Poutine La Banquise. The establishment opened as an ice cream shop nearly half a century ago, expanding its menu over the years and earning a widespread reputation as a dining destination. Its standing as a cultural and culinary institution is reflected in media nods like a Wikipedia entry (a rarity for non-chain restaurants) and a featured mention on the “No Reservations” television show hosted by famous foodie Anthony Bourdain.

The dish for which this eatery is most famous, the poutine, is a Quebec specialty of French fries smothered in gravy and topped with cheese curds. Poutine La Banquise has made the poutine uniquely its own, offering more than two dozen variations on the basic dish. Diners can choose from additional ingredient combinations like hot peppers, bacon or sausages, onions, mushrooms, guacamole, tomato based sauce, and more.

Every year the city of Montreal hosts one of the world’s biggest winter festivals. Sometimes called the Montreal High Lights Festival (a slight twist on the literal translation from the French) draws some nine hundred thousand revelers. With such numbers of vacationers and celebrants converging on the city, the festival puts Montreal in the spotlight—literally as well as figuratively.
When you join the Montreal merry-makers, your toughest predicament will be choosing from among the amazing events and entertainment, not to mention the marvelous menus by world-class chefs. In the space of a week, the city sees professional dance, theater, music and arts, even circus performing.
The streets are abuzz and ablaze with performances, art displays, family activities, braziers, and floodlights. Hundreds of chefs converge on the city from five continents, bringing the magic of their culinary art and feeding the foodies who flock to the festival. It is, indeed, a week of highlights under the city’s High Lights.

Now, Recipes can vary from joint to joint and trying all the different styles is especially exciting.

From February 1st to the 7th, PoutineWeekMontreal is in full throttle. 30 restaurants in Montreal will be offering discounted poutines of their own creation. You can go on PWK’s website to vote for your favorite. The highest rated will be announced for all Montreal to know.

You can get your heart clogged with cheap delicious food and the best establishments get advertising. It’s win-win.

p.s: It’s 5 bucks for a small poutine and 10$ for the large.

Thrilladvisor.ca will be hitting some joints so like our facebook page for updates!
