THREADS: FACTORY by Erik Hart SS12 Presentation

Yesterday I attended the FACTORY by Erik Hart SS12 Presentation. It was located in The Highline Room at The Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District. I liked that after I checked in, they told everyone to wait on the patio. We sat our there and enjoyed the sun for a bit and actually were able to get a preview of the models before they hit the stage as far as hair and make-up. THREADS: Custo Barcelona Illuminates NYFW

CUSTO BARCELONA presents its new Spring - Summer 2012 collection named "TRIPOLAR" at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week in Lincoln Center.to a standing-room-only crowd of international editors, photographers and fans of the brand. In this SS 2012 collection garments are divided into three groups, each with its own identity and theme. This created spectacular presentation on the catwalk, empowering the collection with a triple personality.

The first group is called DUAL and proposes a casual look, suitable both for men and women, dominated by contemporary graphics. Key garments from that line are shorts, blazers and knitwear for women; blazers, shirts, knitwear and comfortable trousers for men. All the pieces immersed in a colour palette of greys, bieges, blues, khakis and blacks, designed and made with natural raw materials such as linen, cotton and silk; and synthetic fabrics such as nylon, acetate rayon and Lurex. Textures are shiny with mirrors, holographics and metal effects combined with washed and distressed textures.

The second group presented was KALEIDOSCOPIO. It is a collection based on micro-pieces of different materials, assembled to create a geometrical universe inspired by the kaleidoscope. Key garments are tight-fitting and elastic dresses, swimwear and jackets in different tones of beige, brown, ochre, coral pink, turquoise and acid green. For the line it is been used fabrics handcrafted based on raffia, cotton and silk, and combined with synthetic fibres such as acetate rayon and touches of metal, Lurex, paillettes and mesh net.

The third and last group is named MÍRAME, and comprises evening and occasion wear. It includes pieces of graphics inspired by the feminine fashion universe, created with 3-D technique. The most significant garments are long and short dresses, shorts, tops and swimwear, made of silk and linen combined with nylon, acetate rayon and manual applications to achieve 3-D effects. The colours dominating Mírame include purple, turquoise, pink, orange and grey. The textures in this group are shiny: gold, silver and copper.

The accessories line includes clutch bags and sunglasses. There are three types of shoes to combine looks: high heel open ankle boot, platform sandals with ankle straps and open sandals. For men, moccasins that go with any look.

A new dimension by Custo, inviting you to be transported, to feel and to enjoy following the trend of this contemporary graphic language that dances to the beat of electronic music.

A fascinating proposal full of energy and new approaches that has dazzled in New York at the hand of the designer and which has been attended by more than 900 guests and fans of the brand like Matthew Settle from Gossip Girl, Carrie Preston from TrueBlood, Miss Jay Alexander from America's Next Top Model and the Spanish super model Almudena Fernandez.

Truthfully as a designer I never really liked the idea of modeling my own clothing. I get really nervous being in front of a camera with a photographer I barely know and then people are watching me from the sidelines, it's nerve-wrecking for me ! But this weekend worst came to worst after my model couldn't make it and I had to jump in and keep things moving. My dear friend Nike (designer of EKINEYO) was on set and she hooked up my make-up and then the photog Stefon Miller started shooting the Summer 2011 Ad Campaign.

Another thing about me is that I'm very particular so I know I was probably getting on the photographers nerves telling him what to do lol, but hey that's what you get when you shoot a designer in their own clothing. I had sooo many ideas, I even brought my cat, Abby, who I love, into the shoot and it was a lot of fun. Honestly, I couldn't believe how well-received this shoot was, sometimes it's good to step outside of your little box and just be spontaneous, it can be good or bad and I'm actually happy that the model canceled because then we wouldn't have gotten these amazing shots ! What Have You Been Up To ?

I don't know what you guys have been up to, but I'll fill you guys in on what I've been doing for the past month. I always say quality over quantity, and I won't update my blog for the sake of keeping it current. My life is getting more and more busy with this whole designing thing.

I'm in the May issue of Essence Magazine's style section with my friend and fellow accessories designer Melanie White (www.melaniemarie.com) :)

I've been doing test shoots and working on some projects leading up to one I'll be releasing soon, stay tuned for that ;)

Blackberry Diaries: I Like To Remind Myself....

Shopping & Style: Punk & Pearl Boutique !

During New York Fashion Week, I took a trip to Punk & Pearl Boutique. I remember last summer I started hearing buzz about Punk & Pearl and I saw all these really cute tops and then I heard about an actual boutique opening. My MÚS by Mali Ro bandage skirts and dresses are actually sold there and I never got the chance to actually visit the store until recently, and I really loved it !

They have really great accessories in there as well as some amazing brands like Brian Litchenberg, Pavon NYC, Robin Jeans, Motel, MOB, Vintage items and also Punk & Pearl is a brand designed by Tyrese Anderson. I chopped it up with the owners LaToya Williams and Sherin Brown. They were so welcoming and showed me around the store.

I love to visit new and fresh boutiques to let my readers know where they should definitely check out and Punk & Pearl has been added to the list, I'm excited to see how they will grow as a store and brand.

Lifestyle: Does Social Networking Ruin Relationships?

Facebook ruins relationships. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that about one social networking site or the other. It seems that people blame the problems that they have in their personal lives in what happens online. Social networking does not ruin relationships. Putting your business out there does. I’m not saying to hide everything that goes on in your personal lives. However, you shouldn’t put the negatives out there for other people to comment on.

When Myspace first came out I did notice a lot of relationships having unfortunate ends. Was it Myspace fault? No. It was in fact that more was being found out about your significant other that they tried to hide. People exposed things on their friend’s pages. The introduction of social networking also opened up the dating world immensely. So people would “talk” to the opposite sex online but say it wasn’t cheating because it was just online. Not knowing the truth about who your significant other is what destroyed these relationships.

There’s nothing wrong with showing your love for your significant other online as long as that’s not the only place that you show it. Believe me ladies when I say if a guy still has single on his Facebook regardless of him saying it isn’t important he doesn’t want anyone to know he is dating you. When someone loves you they don’t try to hide that love. I always think it’s funny when a female claims that she doesn’t want to “cuff online” or wants to “keep her business private” knowing that it’s not her decision but is in fact the guys.

All in all everyone’s relationship is different. People have different things that work with them. Don’t blame your problems in your relationships on the internet. More than likely the problem is just you.

THE DOMINO EFFECT | Gather Round Fashionistas, It's Storytime...

When I look through my work from time to time, it still hasn't really hit me yet how much I've grown from when I first began designing. When people ask me "How did you become successful as a designer so quickly?" I really don't even know how to answer that question, I always start off with "Well it's like a domino effect." Keep reading to see what I mean. It all began when I was in highschool and they offered a Fashion Illustration course, so I took it. I used to draw all kinds of things I had no idea my teacher was keeping such a close eye on me, one day she handed me a paper and suggested I take the Summer Live courses at FIT. So I did just that, I took Intro to Fashion Design and I have to say it was by far the best experience ever. I learned all the basics of forecasting trends, I learned about different textiles and even went to museums and studied clothing from all over the world. After that summer I told my mom once I graduated highschool that I wanted to go to FIT. When I got the package in the mail for the school it was a bit much and I didn't feel like I was ready so I attended a private college, Wood Tobe-Coburn, where I learned things at a great pace and the teachers were more intimate with their students. I did my first internship at Pow Wow Inc. and the head designer took me under her wing and showed me and taught me so many things. She took me to the Coterie show for the first time and sent me out to trend shop and do research. Oh yea, I almost forgot, before any of this, I made a Black & Gold Collection. I designed these pieces specifically for me because I'm tall and I dress a certain way. I decided to shoot the pieces, thanks to Elesia & Karen and my lovely friends Vashti, Jemi & Saachi who modeled my clothes.

My next internship was with Bongo Jeans, I used to wear those jeans when I was like 12 lol. I worked heavily in the design and production department, even did some technical design. I was creating overviews and doing tech packs everyday and I did stuff for Forever 21, Sears and even a few things for Chip & Pepper's lower priced line. After that I interned at Charley 5.0 for a short time and learned a lot by being there and then I was completely exhausted so I was planning on taking a break. Then Victoria from Paper Doll contacted me and I created these pieces for Paper Doll Boutique and then I met a stylist and editor from Hot 97's Trend Report after she saw my dress in the store, I didn't know she was an editor at the time.

Then my friend Brooke told me that LIU was looking for designers and asked me if I wanted to do the show, I agreed and I created a bunch of eclectic and bright pieces in odd colors. It started with the dresses, then I made skirts and tops and cropped tops. It was completely out of my comfort zone and the reason why it ended up being so colorful was because my last collection was Black & Gold and I really was fiending to play around with color.

I was going on vacation the following week, so I made sure that weekend that I shot my look book. Thanks to Tajuan, Franceleslia, Steph, Roman and Shantee etc. for helping me that day. I posted the look book online and then when I got back from vacation I had an email from Clutch Magazine requesting an interview.

I was totally caught off guard when Clutch Magazine contacted me for a feature and after that it was a domino effect, everything just started happening so quickly. Next thing I knew all these blogs started contacting me, and my first printed press was American Dreaming Magazine. One day I was relaxing in my studio and then my brother says "Malika my friend said you're on The Fashion Bomb." I was like "No wayyy".

I had the pleasure of meeting Claire at Fashion Week last month. I told her like I tell everyone, I've been reading The Fashion Bomb since it was a blogspot and I thanked her for the feature :)

After the Fashion Bomb, stylists started pulling my clothing and then my friend Kidear styled his client Kendra in one of my skirts, I posted it on Facebook and then the owner of DLUX, Dorian Grace contacted me to have the skirts in her store. I was psyched. Then a week later, I get a message in my inbox, from this girl named Danielle, she started telling me how she works for Hot 97's Trend Report and she wanted to feature me, she told me about her partner, Meredith who just so happened to be that stylist that pulled my pieces after she saw my dress in Paperdoll Boutique, as I mentioned earlier. Do you guys see what I mean when I say 'It's like a domino effect' ? Anyway, Danielle knows Dorian and she saw that my pieces were going into DLUX then I ended up doing the feature :) To top it all off things felt so surreal when Nicki Minaj wore one of my pieces during her Summer Jam performance. R&B artist Paula Campbell was the first artist to wear one of my pieces, then Nicki, then Felisha and Fallon King from R&B group Cherish and R&B artist Baiyu, most recently. Thank you Jason & Chelsea xo.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their support. Coco & Breezy were the first to buy my skirts and then my clients both domestic and international started rolling in and I'm glad that I always asked them to take pics, that way I'm able to share them with you guys. Seriously thanks so much guys, I'm finally writing this now while I'm still new to this whole thing because I have big plans for myself, my line and my company and I know I will look back on this post one day.

I remember in the beginning there was both positive and negative feedback. I wasn't used to the negativity but it made me stronger, I didn't let it phase me. One thing I do know as a designer is that you have to stay true to yourself and your craft. Originality is key and they will either hate it or love it, but you must stay true to your craft through it all. Stay tuned for what I have in store for you guys, it only gets better from here :) !

Blackberry Diaries: My New Super Duper Cute White Desk

So ever since I turned my room into a design studio last year, I've been extremely indecisive about what furniture I wanted. I ripped out he carpet, replaced it with wooden floors and painted my walls white. I ordered a bunch of new furniture, including this white desk, I'm still waiting on the rest to arrive. I put it together all by myself and I added my knick knacks. I even did some spring cleaning yesterday, packed away the winter clothing pulled out a few brighter pieces. I'm really happy with the results, when I get the rest of my stuff I will post ! Check em out.

Blackberry Diaries: Meeting With Nina Zadeh

Last week, stylist Nina Zadeh came by and pulled some pieces from me for her next project. She is by far an amazing stylist, she styled the entire Richie Rich Pop Luxe show last September and I thought Ellen Degeneres looked so perfectly put together, we can thank Nina for that. Her other clients include Amber Rose, Tinsley Mortimer, Aubrey O'Day and much more. She tweeted these two cute photos of the pieces she pulled so I thought it'll be nice to share with you guys =] I'll start doing this whole Blackberry Diaries thing more often ;)

THRILLS: PSA Coco & Breezy's Anti-Bullying Campaign

If you haven't heard of Coco & Breezy by now, I suggest you get to knowing. These ladies have quickly taken the fashion world by storm with their unique handcrafted eyewear which have been on all your favorite celebs such as Nicki Minaj, Kelly Osbourne, Venus Williams and Ashanti, just to name a few. I attended their NYFW Presentation and they had this video playing basically it was a PSA to help make awareness that children are still being bullied and they want it to stop. With them being from Minnesota, they were really different from everyone else there growing up, as far as their way of dressing and such, so they've definitely experienced some bullying. Watch his video, it's really cool and I really love what the girls are doing. Check it out.

Editorial: Rihanna ROCKS Vogue April Issue

Rihanna is seriously rocking this cover of Vogue's April issue and is totally giving me Jessica Rabbit ! I really didn't like her red hair aat first and didn't understand what she was doing, but now she is owning the entire look. Kudos to Rih, this cover and the entire spread definitely screams LOUD !.

Threads: H&M Collaborates With Swedish HasBeens

I remember in my younger days I use to wear alot of clogs they were basically my favorite shoe to go out in, After all these years later their making a comeback. H&M announced a collaboration with Swedish footwear brand "Hasbeens" (pretty cool name) for Spring 2011, Reinforcing their ties with home grown talent. The Venture is the lasted example of a wider retail trend of brands seeking to collaborate with producers of original and authentic designs in order to add quality and integrity messages into their product ranges. By collaborating with "Hasbeens", H&M is tapping into the current fashion trends for clogs and 1970's looks, which is great because were so use to seeing colorful sneakers or a tall heel.

Swedish Hasbeens was founded in 2007 by childhood friends Cilla Wingard Neuman and Emy Blixt, who found 300 pairs of 1970s clog factory which is kinda ironic, then began creating modern revivals of them Emphasis is placed on utilizing hand crafted methods in combination with environmentally friendly materials. The three styles of 1970s inspired wooden-soled clogs are made exclusively for H&M and will be available around 150 stores World wide starting from April.

I think this a pretty dope idea I can't wait to see how this plays out with all the different styles.

Would You Talk To A Guy/Girl Who Isn't Over Their Ex?

Would you talk to a guy/girl who isn't over their ex? Personally, I think you can't kill fire with fire, basically you can't talk to a new guy/girl with hopes of getting over your ex. We all have a tendency to remember the pleasant moments with our ex and it normally outweighs the misery. The best you can do is to meet others. Get out into the world and find out how many others have been in your state and learn from them on how they resolved things. Sometimes it will take a while, but time has ways of healing things. Being with others will help you identify your problems and resolve them. As a female, I get over someone by completely cutting them out of my life and when I look at them later on, I feel normal. I think it's harder for guys because most of them hold in their feelings and it take much longer for a guy to heal. I wouldn't really want to get serious with a guy that isn't over their ex, because I would be longing for attention and if the feeling aren't reciprocated it's a complete waste of time. Anyway these are my thoughts.

CHANEL Hosts A Dinner In Honor of Blake Lively

As the new face of CHANEL, Blake Lively was gorgeous in Lorraine Schwartz jewelry at last night’s CHANEL dinner, which was held in her honor. She wore 450,000 dollar Lorraine Schwartz platinum, green emerald and yellow diamond earrings totaling over 40 carats. She also wore a Lorraine Schwartz pink gold 15 ct triangular rose cut ring, a platinum 5 carat center oval pinky ring and a pink gold and white diamond flower ring.

Perry Ellis Fall 2011: Timeless Pieces, Fluent Aesthetic

When it comes to timeless pieces with a fluent aesthetic, Perry Ellis wins. I got the pleasure of attending my first Perry Ellis show. It started at 11am. Most people aren't fit for the early shows, but this was a breeze since I attended the 9am Ruffian runway presentation with my good friend Ruben Hughes of Two Inch Cuffs. So I had company and we just lingered around till Perry Ellis began. I got to see everything up close since I had a front row seat and I must say, his collection was extremely wearable and he mastered the layering effect. Quilted bombers, twill blazers, lambswool turtlenecks and trousers in wool and denim came down the runway in neutral shades such as, charcoal, olive, brownstone, vanilla and black. The combination of those textures with that color palette with each piece tailored created the perfect military rustic look. Some looks were quite wearable and others were quite daring. There were trousers tucked into chunky socks and the finale walk was definitely something to see. The audience was pleasantly surprised as the models took a change of wardrobe and stormed down the runway like a team of rugby players in sweatshirts and Perry Ellis thermals.

Tadashi Shoji Fall 2011: Rhythmic Harmony & Nature

Tadashi Shoji is known for creating elegant and simple eveningwear and red carpet looks. This season his muse and inspiration was, the ancient gardens of the Far East. I couldn't describe it better myself. I attended Tadashi Shoji's Fall 2011 runway show during New York Fashion Week.

The show started off with simple cocktail dresses with floral detail and some plain, as the show went on the pieces got more and more detailed and more exciting. I noticed that there were zippers at the waist of some of the dresses, which made me wonder if the dresses also were separates, how clever ! His designs and the make-up had an understated elegance about it. It was quite refreshing.

The dresses were accessorized with with Danni Jo necklaces and kudos to Rodney Cutler's fabulous job on creating the sleek and bluntly cut hairstyles, which flowed as the models floated down the runway in the waterfall like dresses. Tadashi Shoji did not disappoint once again !

   There are lots of people out there that have tattoos and there are those special occasions and job interviews where some tattoos should be hidden. Thank God for Kat Von D's tattoo concealer ! Kat Von D is a famous tattoo artist mainly known for her show LA Ink and her body coverage of tattoos from her face all the way down to her sleeves on her legs. She's also known for her show "LA Ink".
   In 2008 Von D created and launched a makeup line for "Sephora", she has released new collections every year and has expanded her line which also includes Fragrances. The collection she has introduced exemplifies old-Hollywood glamour with edgyness. Kat was always into makeup & its beautiful texture but she also wanted something that would work well with her tattoos and came up with a brilliant idea for the average female.
   In 2010 she specifically designed a line for girls with tattoos which is complete GENIUS! Von Dee wanted to make a pigment makeup that conceals the tattoo with a natural look, she felt girls should be comfortable if their in a professional environment or just taking care of business at the time. Von Dee has a whole list of products from tattoo concealer brushes ; autograph eyeliner to makeup setting mist.

This is a great idea especially coming from a female with tons of tattoos, she actually has hands on to her own product knowing the feel of every inch, to what works and what doesn't .I recently got some concealer for a viable tattoo & I have to say this product is great!
