News from the Cobbles

Corrie’s executive producer Kieran Roberts has defended the Molly-Kevin affair storyline while answering readers’ questions in the Radio Times.

He revealed that despite a number of viewer complaints, he and the writing team felt that the storyline was “plausible”.

"In Molly's eyes, Tyrone is a lovely lad, but also immature, even boring.

“In Kevin, Molly sees a more mature man who can bring romance into a life that's become dull” Roberts said, adding, "I don't imagine many viewers will sympathise, but I think Molly's behaviour is understandable and consistent."

Roberts’ defence of the plotline comes as news that Vicky Binns who plays Molly was recently booed and heckled when she took part in a charity run. Clearly some people can’t separate fiction from real life!

The X Factor: The confounding and cackling monster event (Or: Lucie gets the chop)

Just when you think you've got the measure of The X Factor, it turns on you and bites your hand.

This weekend saw the usual mix of pleasing and preposterous and then sucker punched an entire viewing nation. The show is a writhing monster of an event which sees people foaming with confused, giddy glee... leaving everyone else to fill up entire pages of social networking sites with hackneyed vents about How Terrible It All Is.

The fact is, in The X Factor, we have a show that no-one is able to stop talking about.

The X Factor Series 6 Week 5 – The Results (aka I like to Movie It Movie It)

20:01 It's the results and our predictions at TV Throng HQ? Lloyd and Lucie in the bottom too. Possibly Jamie. Tonight's musical guests – Leona Lewis and the Black Eyed Peas. Ms TV Throng doesn't mind the Black Eyed Peas, I'd rather get a punch up the bracket than listen to them.

20:02 Here come the judges, introduced with the Superman Theme. Grandiose much?

20:04 Watching the group performance is like being trapped in the Butlins on the South coast of Hell. This week it's Katy Perry's Hot And Cold. It's…luke warm.

20:07 The recaps and once again, Ollie's performance has made Ms TV Throng leave the room!

20:08 Louis and Cheyl arguing over Lloyd. Sorry Cheryl but the leprecaun is right, he's bobbins.

20:09 Recap of Louis all angry about Gummo. People need to send him DVD copies. "Louis should be a traffic warden," says Simon. I think he's under-qualified.

Lucie leaves X Factor

Hi all, the acts in the bottom two this week were Lucie and John and Edward.

First to sing was Lucie who sang One Moment In Time

Second were John and Edward singing Rock DJ

Louis of course voted to save John and Edward while Dannii voted off the twins. Cheryl also saved Lucie so it was down to Simon's choice. Yet again he sent it to deadlock.

The public vote decided that - by having the lowest number of votes - Lucie would leave. Oh my....

Live blog: The X Factor Series 6 Week 5

19:43 Fifteen minutes until this week's cavalcade of movie song perfomances, fake controversy between the judges and Jedward sliming someone in the face (Simon "Someone" Cowell, I suspect). Frankly, I very nearly didn't turn up tonight after the public failed to vote for my beloved Rachel. I hope she becomes the British Rhianna – she's got the haircut already – but you know, without the lashings of domestic violence. I'm shifting my loyalty to Lucie.

Predictions:

Olly with take Twist And Shout and twist it into something utterly unrecognisable.

Jamie's Crying will be passable but as Louis has said before, pub singer-like.

Danyl will do a version of Prince's Purple Rain that will make girls swoon and me gag.

Joe will do a seriously schmaltzy version of the Circle of Life, more sugary than Elton John could ever have imagined.

Rhys, Josh, and Hayley

Heading round to see Josh in halls, Rhys is keen to know if Josh has any interest in India, Josh is adamant that they’re just friends though, and Rhys therefore looks for an opportunity to try and get in there with India.

As the students go out to the SU Bar, Rhys has his chance to try and speak with India, Rhys is in for a bit of embarrassment however as India isn’t even remotely interested.

After Rhys’ failed attempts to woo India, he settles down in a seat next to Hayley at the SU Bar, and soon discovers that Hayley isn’t exactly India’s biggest fan.

Hollyoaks Cast News

Digital Spy is reporting today that Hollyoaks co-stars and real-life couple Ricky Whittle and Carley Stenson have split-up after two years together.

A Hollyoaks spokesperson told DS, "Carley Stenson and Ricky Whittle have announced their decision to separate.

“The pair remain good friends but do not wish to comment any further."

Ricky – who of course plays hunky woman magnet Calvin Valentine in the soap – is currently working on both Hollyoaks and BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and is apparently “struggling” to cope with the increased workload Strictly has brought, though there has been no official confirmation that this has played a part in his split from Carley.

In happier news, former Hollyoaks star Terri Dwyer has given birth to her second child.

Ross Kemp is referred to as a TV Hardman. This is probably because he looks like a hooligan and played the part of Grant Mitchell. However, being a bone-headed thesp does not a hard man make.

That said, he's at least shown he's got balls like King Kong (which is certainly more than you could say for a wimp like me) by going into dangerous wartorn places to bring us his own slant on our most recent bloodshed.

Review: Slips (Viva)

You know what I was thinking the other day? I was thinking that the world really needed a show hosted by a washed-up late-nineties pop star featuring scallies razzing the crap out of jumped up rust-heaps.

And by God, Viva came up trumps for me by showing a show called Slips.

The show features Huey from Fun Lovin' Criminals and, unsurprisingly, he hams up his Noo Yoikness and for all the world, believes himself to be a wiseguy from a Hollywood mafia flick. Honestly. He sleeps with a severed horse-head in his bed for faux-authenticity. He probably says 'capiche?' to his toaster.

Tuning in for Nevermind The Buzzcocks (BBC Two) has filled me with trepidation of late. Since the departure of Simon Amstell and Bill Bailey, it certainly seemed like the show was doomed. However, it survived the departure of Mark Lamarr... so maybe, like Have I Got News For You?, the show is bigger than any one person... right?

Recent shows have felt very hit-and-miss and it seems like a long time since I heartily snorted over the show... however... last night gave me some hope as ...Buzzcocks hit vintage stride with a decent mix of guest and weirdly, the presenter.

When I discovered that Claudia Winkelman was heading up the show, my heart sank. However, on the strength of last night's show, I could easily buy into her becoming the permanent resident of the host's chair.

Ant and Dec to Push The Button

Ant and Dec (it's never 'Dec and Ant' is it? I wonder if they ever argue about it, Lennon and McCartney style) and ITV folks are knocking their many heads together to make a new family challenge gameshow as the long-term replacement for Saturday Night Takeaway.

With a working title of Push The Button (a keeper, I think), the show is all but commissioned from the presenters’ indie production company, Gallowgate.

The duo will front the new show and start each episode by surprising two families in their homes (a bit like Noel's House Party used to do). The format is still evolving but will see the families go head to head in a series of challenges.

Each family begins the show with a prize fund, which is reduced according to how long they spend on each challenge.

Lord Burns is new Channel 4 head honcho

Channel 4 have announced that C. Montgomery Burns will take over as Channel 4 chairman 27th January. Ofcom have confirmed his appointment.

Burns joins the broadcaster’s board immediately as chairman-designate and will be a key figure in appointing Andy Duncan’s replacement as chief executive.

He currently owns Springfield Nuclear Power Plant and is also a leading member of the Stone Cutters. He has also been involved in the Lil Lisa Recycling Plant, Burns Slant Drilling Co, owner of a basketball team and Burns Media. It is thought he may have to step away from the latter for fear of compromising his role at Channel 4.

The news has caused some controversy with animal welfare supporters angered at Burns' use of flying monkeys and attack dogs... not to mention the poisoning of the local environment and the blocking out of the sun with a giant machine.

News from Hollyoaks

Hollyoaks star Stephanie Waring has told Reveal magazine that she felt “insecure” about her body when she returned the show after having her daughter, Mia in 2005.

30 year old Stephanie told the magazine, "I think any woman has hang-ups about their body after having a baby. “The one area I've never really been comfortable with since having Mia is my boobs because I breastfed.

"It was always in my head, but I was more conscious of it when I rejoined Hollyoaks."

Stephanie went on to describe being a mum as “the most rewarding thing" she’s ever experienced, and she added that she remains “happily in love” with her partner, Dan.

New from the Dales

Max Caulfield to leave Emmerdale

It seems that Maxwell Caulfield, who plays bigamist Mark Wylde in Emmerdale is due to leave in the New Year, giving the show’s writers the chance to think up a really juicy ending for the character.

Max originally signed a 12 month contract and has decided not to renew it this year, although the rest of his on-screen family are believed to have renewed theirs.

Max told the PA, "I can't believe how fast my year in beautiful Yorkshire has flown by!

“But there was only so long Mark could keep those two women on the boil before he was the one getting burned!

“I'm confident the viewers will find this story gripping to the very end. Emmerdale is in great shape and I'll miss them all."

Corrie’s Kym Marsh has been named Celebrity Mum Of The Year, and was “delighted” to receive the honour.

And it seems that despite news of a rather unpleasant break-up last month, Kym announced that she’s officially back with long-term partner and ex-Hollyoaks actor, Jamie Lomas.

Kym told the PA, "Yes we are back together. Jamie’s got a son of his own and he’s a very good father, but he can't win Celebrity Mum Of The Year!"

33 year old Kym, who has two children, David, 14, and Emily who’s 11, added, "It’s a real honour to get this award.

“It’s nice to know I’ve got a lot of support out there. It’s been a really difficult year.

"I’ve been a single parent in the past and I’ve had struggles, so hopefully, people still think I’ve done the best by my children.

Scarily thin ice for two Mitchell women…

Scarily thin ice for two Mitchell women…

Daniella Westbrook looks more than a little bit nervous in this picture from The Sun as she practices for Dancing On Ice with coach Jayne Torvill...

Let’s hope she doesn’t come a cropper, on that thin ice or the whole bunch of it that Archie’s setting her up for…

Another Mitchell who’s doing all the clichés – walking on thin ice, playing with fire, etc etc – is Ronnie who next week decides it’d be a great idea to sleep with Owen!

Her desperation for a baby is clearly sending her doolally; why else would she want to get involved with a bloke who tried to kill his own daughter and is only just out of the nick for it?!

The couple get all jiggy with it after Ronnie tells Owen she doesn't hate him, unlike the rest of the Square’s residents, and Owen reveals to Ronnie that he tried to commit suicide in prison.

News from the Cobbles

Coronation Street Chief Kieran Roberts has told the Radio Times that it wouldn’t be “realistic” if nobody was shown smoking on the show.

He told RT, "While we have a duty not to glamorise the habit, it would be realistic to see nobody smoking - but only a few regulars do."

He added that since the smoking ban in was introduced in 2007, characters such as Deidre Barlow tend to most often smoke outdoors, and we often see her in the back yard of her home or in the smoking shelter at the Rovers.

Roberts added, "Just as in real life, that makes the habit more visible, but it's not actually more prevalent."

And an interesting little factoid – sort of – is that the Rovers was one of the first soap pubs to show its patrons abiding by the new regulations.
Are you tired of Gordon Ramsay?

Gordon Ramsay returns to our screens tonight with his big, rubbery, gnarled face. Out of his face will tumble a volley of expletives and his infamous tics...

"Uh?" "Big boy!" "Yes chef?" "Uh" "Big boy!" "Uh?" *hand slap* "Uh?" *throat slitting movement* "Uh?"

Yes. Chef.

See, Gordon Ramsay was once the king of TV cookwits. However, over the past year or so, he's turned into something of a parody of himself. We don't need Spitting Image anymore because our celebrities send themselves up better than anyone else!

Fearne and... Peaches Geldof (ITV2)

The prospect of following Fearne Cotton and Peaches Geldof around is enough to make any sane human want to end their life in the most painful way possible. Tuning into Fearne And... Peaches Geldof (ITV2) last night, I dreamed of slowly sliding into a tree-shredder and spelling out WHAT IS THE POINT? in my own innards on a wall.

You see, Fearne Cotton is a monumentally pointless TV entity. She is lacking in the most basic of human charisma. She's a hallowed out husk that inexplicably continues to get work from mediafolk, despite the fact that, in all my years on Earth (which is about 100 if you're wondering) I've never met a human who sails even close to liking her.

Yet, unfathomably, ITV has unearthed Peaches Geldof who makes Cotton look as complex as The Prince of Denmark.

The only thing more baffling than the idiots who peddle business speak is Donald Trump's hair.

It's mystifying.

For years I've stared at it wondering where the hell it comes from... and last night, I finally figured it out.

Emmerdale Cast News

Emmerdale’s Lucy Pargeter has been telling the Daily Mirror that she still finds it "weird" when she has to kiss someone on screen.

When Lucy was asked how her fiancé – Rudi Coleano – feels about her snogging on screen, Lucy said, "He seems fine with it. I still find it weird because you don't usually have somebody watching you when you are with your partner being romantic.

"Having to make things look convincing when you're not going out with that person is strange."

Lucy, who has a daughter with Rudi, also said in the interview that she hasn’t got any plans to marry Rudi just yet…

"Rudi is basically waiting for me to get my act together to let him know when!" she said.

Coronation Street Cast News

The new beefcake on Coronation Street, Jake - played by Kenny Doughty - has apparently been signed up to make another appearance on the Street’s New Year’s Eve episode.

Jake has recently been seen wooing and bedding Michelle, but he’s soon to be off our screens as he takes up a job offer in Scotland. However, Kenny announced his brief return on Twitter…

"Pleased to say I'm going back for one more episode on Corrie! Yipee! Will keep nudging them for longer though as I love it on the street!"

A Coronation Street spokeswoman told the PA that Kenny “would be seen again” in Weatherfield at other times, but she added, "There could be a future appearance but nothing's been confirmed yet."

In other cast news, Chris Gascoyne who plays Peter Barlow has apparently been advising his on-screen son Alex Bain to “stay grounded” despite what’s turned out to be his great success on the Street.

One of the former bosses of Hollyoaks, Bryan Kirkwood - pictured above in the centre - has been appointed EastEnders’ Chief Executive as the present CEO, Diederick Santer is retiring after overseeing the show’s 25th anniversary live show in February.

Santer has been at the helm of the show for three years and during his time, we’ve seen some of the most explosive storylines ever, including the hugely successful Max and Stacey storyline that came to a dramatic head in the 2007 Christmas Day episode which was watched by nearly 15 million viewers.

Santer also created the characters of Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell, the Masoods and he’s also responsible for bringing many of the much loved Jackson family back to the Square.

November 2 2009

Spencer has a big party at The Loft and gives out free drinks to all

Suzanne and Neville's godson Duncan shows up at The Dog

Archie moves back into the flat with Kris, Zak, and Elliot

Spencer and Dave

Wanting to find out what makes the SU Bar popular, Spencer turns up for a bit of research, and gets chatting to Dave whilst he’s there.

Shooting a few games of pool, Spencer asks everyone at the SU Bar back to The Loft, and takes the party back there where he happily provides all his new ‘friends’ with free alcohol.

Feeling that Spencer is being taken advantage of, Dave collects £20 from everyone in attendance, making sure that Spencer doesn’t finish the night too badly out of pocket.

Calvin isn’t at all happy when he returns to The Loft to find Spencer giving out free drinks, and is quick to accuse Dave of taking advantage of Spencer.
