Through the lens of a camera

Bravery

2013-10-30T16:42:00.000-07:00

Bravery beads are a part of a program that is run through the child life department at Sick Kids hospital in Toronto. For every procedure that a child goes through they receive one bead; each bead has a special meaning. For example, all those pink beads are for infusions, the little red ones are 'special pokes' or blood tests to the adults. Life for kids at the hospital is often not fun, it's a painful, confusing and scary time for them but these beads are a reward and together they make us a road map of the journey these young ones have been on, a very visual reminder of how brave they are, for today but also when they are older.

That field...

2012-06-22T18:04:00.001-07:00

Every June for the past 6 years I have passed this field on the way North for holiday. Back before kids, before marriage, just after returning from my years in Europe. I pass it a number of times each year, and either I am too busy, or I don't have my camera. Whatever the reason, this is the first year that I actually had the time and the camera at the same place together. It was worth the wait. The colours, the shadows, I love this field! The temptation to put the camera down and run through this field... well let's just say it was hard to resist but in the end I decided that it would be better to leave that field untouched for the next photographer that happens along.

The window

2012-06-22T15:29:00.001-07:00

There is something so whimsical and dreamy about a child and a window. They stare out a window and you can almost imagine them staring into the future, or wishing for something more than what they have right now, or as is the case in some of these shots, they are simply enjoying the reflection they are creating. Windows, mirrors, or maybe even a lens can be some of the most whimsical things we have in the world.

There is something really exciting about opening a magazine and seeing one of your images on the shiny pages staring back at you... I have had a number of images printed but I have always know it would happen ahead of time so the thrill is not quite the same (though still fun). A few weeks ago my Dad handed me a magazine and there, staring back at me was one of my photos! I would think that the thrill is akin to being a musician and one day hearing your songs on the radio... Always exhilarating!

Sometimes the best portraits are caught without trying... but simply taking part of a moment and then capturing it. This particular one was right before an outdoor paintball game...

Love in action

2012-05-29T14:29:00.000-07:00

I have been thinking about 'love in action' these days. What does that look like if you were to create an image of it? On my facebook page I have been asking people to share their own photos of 'love in action'. In an attempt to kick start the onslaught of creativity I shared one of my own. I am putting the challenge out there to my Blogger friends too. I want to see your idea of what this 'love in action' thing looks like to you!

Feel free to visit my Facebook page (Horizons Photography) and post your own image there to share. The best image will be published here!

Children can either make a shoot difficult or easy... but ALWAYS FUN!

2012-02-27T11:02:00.002-08:00

The best part about being a photographer is the people you meet, and getting a glimpse into what means the most to them. The look of love shared between a husband and wife, the smile of a child to their parent, or a friendly shove from a sibling. To catch those moments, to be a part of capturing that moment for people to cherish in the years to come is what makes this job my passion and not work at all.

2 dollars

2012-02-11T11:23:00.000-08:00

I led a photo walk downtown today, we hit St. Lawrence Market and wandered about taking photos of food, people and the architecture. It was a great time, I was looking for that 'shot', the one that makes you leave an outing like this feeling satisfied! I got it when I threw a toonie in a trumpet case.
