TOEFL Score for US Colleges

If you are applying to to U.S. Schools, colleges as an International Student, where English language is not native language, then TOEFL Score is mandatory application requirement. All the schools require you have to minimum TOEFL scores to be considered for admission. Students post lots of questions like

What is the minimum TOEFL Score required for admission into U.S. Universities
My TOEFL Score is 79, can I get admission in MS
What is the Minimum TOEFL score required to get admission with scholarship
What is acceptable toefl scores required for admission
What is minimum toefl iBT score required for admission in US colleges

Though all the questions are different, it refer to same question.
Where to Find Minimum TOEFL Scores

If you look at International Student admission page in any college, university web page, they will list the minimum TOEFL scores required to be considered for admission.

Total Score: 83

Auburn University
Total Score: 80, with the following minimum section requirements
Reading: 20, Listening: 20, Speaking: 20, Writing: 20

Case Western Reserve University – School of Graduate Studies
Total Score: 79, with the following minimum section requirements
Reading: 19, Listening: 15, Writing: 22, Speaking: 23

Some students will have taken TOEFL CBT (Computer Based Test) which will have scores to 300 points. In that case usually universities requires atleast 213. Alos, some in countries Paper Based test is also offered which scores ranging from 310 to 677 and 0-6 in writing.

Manchester United canceled the schedulle in Indonesia

Kaboom! Two bombs were exploded at two premium hotels in Jakarta on Friday morning. And that's make the superb football team Manchester United canceled the match against the All Indonesian Superstars.
Disappoint? Off course!!
The MU players were planned to stay at Ritz Charlton hotel near the JW Marriot hotel, but unfortunately the hotel was bombed too. Sir Alex Ferguson was said that he should prioritize the safety of his players. That's why he decided not to go to Indonesia.
The local committee which led by Mr.Agum Gumelar were shocked when he heard that Ritz has been bombed. He has tried to talk to the MU management but they still refused to play in Indonesia. Well..see you sometimes MU.

Tips sukses berdasarkan pengalaman saya dalam mengikuti English Proficiency Test (EPT) di ITB:
Begitu tes ini dimulai kami diberikan penjelasan oleh panitia bahwa EPT akan dilaksanakan dalam 3 (tiga) section:
- Section 1 : Listening
- Section 2 : Structure
- Section 3 : Reading and Vocabulary
dan semuanya multiple choice
Lahh?? Kok sama aja kayak TOEFL??
Iya betul, section-sectionnya memang sama tapi ada yang berbeda yakni jumlah soal dan waktu pelaksanaannya (masa siy cuma itu bedanya?).

Mari kita bahas lebih dalam...

Section 1 - Listening
Terdiri dari 20 (dua puluh) soal, dilaksanakan dalam waktu kurang lebih 25 menit, disini memakai istilah 'kurang lebih' karena soal disampaikan menggunakan media yang recorded (rekaman).
Kalau listening TOEFL, soal diperdengarkan dalam bentuk conversation antara dua orang dan berdurasi pendek, kemudian baru ditanyakan soalnya. Nah, kalau EPT, soal diperdengarkan dalam bentuk penjelasan oleh seseorang (bisa cowok atau cewek). Jadi disini kita diminta untuk mendengarkan sebuah penjelasan tentang suatu hal yang spesifik (mirip dosen yang lagi memberi kuliah) dan durasinya cukup panjang kurang lebih 2-3 menit. Waktu saya ikut tes, tema yang dibahas adalah tentang biologi, chemical/kimia, politik, dan penjelasan tentang bagaimana melakukan registrasi untuk masuk ke asrama. Setelah materi disampaikan, barulah kita diminta menjawab pertanyaan sekitar 2-4 soal. Jadi disini kita dituntut untuk betul-betul paham dengan penjelasan materi yang disampaikan. Seru kan???
Disini Saya mengalami kesulitan karena kami susah sekali berkonsentrasi, apalagi kalau suara yang muncul adalah suara pria yang berkesan 'tebel' dan 'nge-bass', bener-bener susah untuk dicerna orang ini lagi ngomong apa karena pronunciation (lafal)-nya ga jelas. Soal yang diberikan pun tidak semuanya 'tersurat', jadi untuk bisa menjawabnya kita harus menyimpulkan dulu penjelasan tadi.

Section 2 - Structure
Terdiri dari 25 (dua puluh lima) soal multiple choice, dilaksanakan dalam waktu 20 menit saja, jadi waktu untuk mengerjakan satu soal tidak sampai 1 menit.
Pada TOEFL, terdapat bentuk soal yang mencari bagian kalimat yang structure-nya salah, misalnya hanya mencari bagian verb-nya saja atau 'to be'-nya saja tergantung tenses. Pada EPT, semua soalnya tidak mencari bagian yang salah, namun mengisi bagian yang kosong alias melengkapi kalimat dengan pilihan berupa kata atau kalimat. Yang membuat EPT lebih susah (menurut saya) karena bagian yang kosong itu harus diisi mulai dari bentuk yang sederhana (kata) sampai yang kompleks (kalimat). Yang sederhana siy paling cuma mengisi 'a', 'is', atau verb bentuk I, II, III. Kalau yang kompleks, kita disuruh untuk mengisi kalimat utuh. Jadi pilihannya adalah bentuk-bentuk kalimat dengan structure yang berbeda-beda tapi basic noun dan verb-nya sama. Jadi kita harus memikirkan seluruh komponen structure kalimat secara lengkap karena hampir semua pilihan jawabannya betul! Pusing deh..sumpah!

Section 3 - Reading and Vocabulary
Terdiri dari 30 (tiga puluh) soal multiple choice, dilaksanakan dalam waktu 25 menit saja, jadi waktu untuk mengerjakan satu soal tidak sampai semenit juga!
Disini saya benar-benar dikejar waktu, waktu saya mengerjakan section ini, saya sampai stress, gimana nggak stress baru ngerjain kira-kira 10 soal tiba-tiba diumumkan sama petugas kalau waktu tinggal 10 menit lagi??!!
Di section ini diberikan 3 (tiga) buah bacaan yang (menurut saya) semuanya panjang-panjang. Pada halaman contoh diberikan bacaan yang tidak lebih dari 10 baris, nah pada soal sebenarnya yang muncul malah lebih dari 20 baris! DamN...!
Biasanya kalau mengerjakan TOEFL, saya punya trik untuk langsung membaca soalnya dan mencari jawabannya di bacaan. Nah di EPT ini, di bacaan yang pertama saya menerapkan trik ini tapi gagal karena ternyata jawaban dari pertanyaan yang muncul harus dipikirin dulu alias diolah dulu baru bisa dijawab. Soal yang muncul kebanyakan diawali dengan 'Why' yang artinya 'kenapa' nah ini kan pertanyaan yang tidak bisa dijawab dengan 1 atau 2 kata. Benar saja, jawaban yang tersedia di multiple choice itu tidak ada jawaban pendek tapi panjang alias satu kalimat! Pantesan susah kalo mau menerapkan trik yang pertama. Akhirnya di bacaan kedua saya ubah triknya, yaitu membaca dan memahami dulu semuanya secara lengkap, baru deh jawab soal. Dengan cara seperti ini ternyata (menurut saya lagi) dirasa lebih mudah dalam menjawab soal. Jadi kunci sukses di section ketiga ini adalah kecepatan membaca dan memahami bacaan dalam bahasa inggris.

Kesimpulan (lagi-lagi menurut saya):
EPT benar-benar menguji kemampuan berbahasa inggris lebih komprehensif.

Tips-nya adalah:
Untuk section pertama, harus sering berlatih mendengarkan penjelasan dalam bahasa inggris yang berdurasi panjang. Contoh latihan-nya bisa dengan mendengarkan berita bahasa inggris, film dokumenter (nonton Discovery Channel atau National Geographic Channel sangat disarankan), atau mengikuti seminar berbahasa inggris.
Untuk section kedua dan ketiga, harus sering membaca tulisan-tulisan dalam bahawa inggris yang panjang. Jadi jangan malas baca bacaan berbahasa inggris yang panjang, soalnya ini penting buat Anda yang ingin melanjutkan studi S2 atau S3 karena literatur yang up-to-date tidak ada yang menterjemahkan. Baca buku Harry Potter yang berbahasa inggris sangat disarankan, karena biasanya dalam buku cerita banyak sekali contoh tenses dan structure.

Some of my students ask me a question about their future "Sir, if I take this major, which company that I could get in?"
My answer seems like little bit arrogant, "Well, you could work at any company, now computer becomes their basic need."

I keep thinking why those students pursue higher education to get a job? Which means, they couldn't see another chance except job. They should know about going to college means they go to the 'school of thought'. At school or college, they've been taught about how to think and learn, after they know how to think and learn there is something more to do: contribute.

At college (and some school), they've been asked to create something, it could be means, paper, assignment, etc. To contribute is to create something valuable to the (at least) themselves, then to the society and country. After making any kind of contribution, they will be 'seen', then the chances will open widely. The great news is, they could choose whatever they wanna be, not only job in a company.

Contribute first, and then...choose.

From today, I'm no longer the Coordinator of Studentship Affair in Telkom Polytechnic. Now I become the Coordinator of Research and Society Subjectiveness (Penelitian dan Pengabdian Masyarakat), sounds weird for me, specially the last two words. Well, that's the best I can do in translating bahasa into english.

Ride with bus

I usually go to my hometown using train, but now the price is getting more expensive. My GF asks me to use bus for the alternative and I try to follow her suggestion.
I'm using Pahala Kencana (name of the bus company), the price is much cheaper and the seats is comfy too plus a smooth blanket makes my trip more comfortable.
In the middle of the trip, the bus goes to the restaurant so the passengers could have dinner. The bus company gave us dinner ticket, so we can eat dinner with no price.
At the restaurant, the passenger from Pahala Kencana have special place, we're putted together in a big and air conditioned room with buffet menu, it makes us more comfortable while having dinner.

So nice...

Here is another edition of Eee PC machines which focus on delivering a relatively cheap laptop. It calles ASUS Eee PC S101. The S101 is essentially an Eee PC 1000 which forced into a smaller size and touched with fashion.

The appearance of the Eee PC S101 is different from its predecessors. It has the same features and components as the Eee PC 1000. The weight is about 1kg, and only 25mm thickness just like MacBook Air, but in a much smaller version. There are three colors available: Brown, Champagne and graphite.

The Eee PC S101 has a 10.2-inch LED-backlit display, and use low-wattage 1.6GHz Atom processor, I think it’s enough for basic tasks like surfing or PowerPoint presentations. This notebook equipped with Super Hybrid Engine, which allows the S101 to operate for up to 5 hours while runs on battery.

The Eee PCis now have more intuitive use, we can do multitouch variety at the trackpad. We could scroll, zoom and resize images by using two fingers. Other features are: Draft-N wireless radio, Bluetooth connectivity, three USB ports and a VGA output.

Super Sniper in Airsoft

I was an airsoft player before and I like the game very much. Airsoft battle which called ‘skirmish’ is kind of military simulation. When we did the skirmish thing, my friends and I were separated into two different group, one group plays role as the defender and the other one as the attacker that is the airsoft roles in battle game.

Each person in every team have their own role in battle. One of my favorite roles is as a sniper. Yup, a sniper is a man with a long rifle and with a big telescope attached on it. At first, I don’t know how to be a good sniper and what kind of rifle is perfect for sniper, but after I read this supplement from flyntairsoft.com I do now understand that to be a sniper there is an art that could create a successful sniper.
I finally know that a position as a sniper is one of the most favorite. For me, to be a sniper is better for me because I don’t have to run and do such difficult movement to ambush the enemies.

Another interesting thing in snipping is the “ghillie” or the camouflage as the airsoft gear, in “The Art of Being an Airsoft Super Sniper” said that super sniper typically customize their suits by adding plant-matter or rolling in the dirt of mud! Wow, it just remind me to Rambo who hides under the mud.
I just couldn’t stand to go back playing airsoft again.

Paradigm in Programming

The title above is one of my class subject in my study for master degree.
At first, I didn't get any clue with this subject. It says 'paradigm', what is the paradigm in programming? what's wrong with this programming thing? I still didn't get it.
But, after I followed the class, now I understand that there were so many programming language produced around the world. From 'A' language, 'B' language and 'C' language until Python as they claimed that Python is above high level language.

What is the difference between them?
Now, I know the answer, the difference is on their language of course (^_^)v
No,no, I am just kidding, the difference is on the grammar. How their creator created their grammar, structures and identifiers.
Languages in programming are built on specific grammar, that's why they can built style and many conformance in writing programs.
Basically, the grammars were built from two kind of thing : 'terminals' and 'non-terminals'.

What are the difference between 'terminal' and 'non-terminal'?
Terminals are the symbol or specific keyword provided by the language itself. And non-terminals are variables or one or more "productions" rules that map the non-terminal to a string of tokens (terminal).
The main idea is repeatedly replace the non-terminal with the productions strings until a set of tokens were formed.
Here the example for you to learn about grammar in programming language.

There were so many ways to describe or to present a grammar using set of notations. The most popular notation in describing grammar is BNF (Backus Naur Form).
