You may remember designer James Lillis from the interview I did with him in February last year, or my critique of his subversive t-shirt designs. Today's post is about his other creative outlet, the ladies leggings fashion label Black Milk.

Stop Shark Finning

Andy was kind enough to let me run riot on his blog, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to write about shark finning. I found out about shark finning a couple of years ago, and to be honest I found it difficult to believe that mankind could be so barbaric and wasteful. Maybe it was a little naive to expect anything different - after all, hundreds of thousands of bison were slaughtered in the US, just for target practice, elephants and rhinos have been hunted for their ivory, and come to that, we have slaughtered innocent people in death camps. But there was something so vile about the practise of shark finning - which is the slicing off of the sharks' fins and the dumping of the animal (often still alive) back into the ocean, as if it were some kind of living trash - that is just so disgusting that I felt compelled to create a website about it and do my best to spread the word about it so that people can inform themselves before they decide to eat shark fin soup.

The numbers of sharks involved are staggering, a common estimate is 70 million sharks killed per year. Most of these are killed just for their fins, so that they can be used in shark fin soup. Shark fins fetch hundreds of dollars per kilo, but the rest of the animal is of low commercial value and is difficult and expensive to store on a fishing boat. Fins can be sun-dried on deck or frozen. A cargo of shark fins can fetch thousands and thousands of dollars. So why is shark fin soup so popular? It is a traditional Chinese dish that only a small number of Chinese used to be able to afford - however, with the increase in prosperity it has become extremely popular among the Chinese middle class and is served at business banquets, weddings and any formal occassion.

So what is being done about it? There are organizations such as Wild Aid and Sea Shepherd doing their best to increase awareness, with one or two high profile Chinese personalities getting involved to persuade people not to eat the dish. However it is not only a Chinese and Asian problem. Shark fin soup can be found in restaurants across the world, you may even have tried it yourself. I have been trying to increase awareness of the problem through my website and social network prescence and have successfully campaigned against business-to-business organizations like EC21 and TradeKey to remove shark fins from their sites. The problem needs to be dealt with from my different angles - reducing demand, increasing awareness, boycotting companies and restaurants, improving legislation, and so on. Species of some sharks have fallen by well over 90% in some cases in just 20 or 30 years - sharks take several years to reach maturity, so they cannot survive with the current level of slaughter. The Ultimate Warrior On A Tee

When is the last time you heard someone mention the Ultimate Warrior? Arguably one of the best wrestlers from the 80's and 90's, the Warrior was most famous for his unbelievable energy and incoherent interviews. I hadn't thought about him in a long time until I saw this recent design by Fat Mouse on Emptees:

Thanks to good ol' YouTube I was taken back to my childhood and view some more of those bumbling rants aimed towards Hulk Hogan and other wrestlers. The best one I found was an interview with Arsenio Hall where it appears Arsenio is visibly apprehensive towards the Warrior. This guy had to have been a loose cannon. Enjoy the vid!

Ok, so maybe I was a little hasty in declaring my disinterest in the t-shirt world. Here's one of a slew of unlicensed Popeye based designs released since the copyright expired in January.

It looks like Popeye has been hitting the synthol like Greg Valentino judging by his swole muscles in this tee, £24.99 from Urban Retro.

If you stand by Popeye's favourite maxim, this could be the t-shirt for you. Personally, I believe that an "I am what I am" attitude is restrictive of growth and development, and underestimates the human capacity to adapt. Popeye's propensity to solve his problems with violence is another character flaw in my view, though I guess sometimes "a man's gotta do what a man's got to do", if you'll forgive another tautophrase.

The Three Wolf Moon Goes Primetime

I know I sound like a broken record because I'm starting to feel like one. I just can't let an update on this t-shirt meme go away without me sharing it with you guys. Just when you thought the Three Wolf Moon T-shirt had gone away by dropping out of the top 10 at Amazon (#13 on the apparel list), it is poised for a comeback.

It was recently worn by the very popular character Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson in real life) on the hit TV show The Office. The shirt is really making the rounds!

Welcome Back Big Bang Theory T-Shirts

James from t-shirt connoisseur here, doing a guestblog for thunderfrogs. In honor of season three starting, I thought I'd round up a few of my favourite Big Bang Theory t-shirts!

First up is an instructional t-shirt from Think Geek on how to play Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock.

Sheldon wears some great shirts on the show (and unlike other TV shows, he re-wears them on a later date, just like real people do), and my favorite is easily the Ames Bros tee (shown in eggplant here) from Anonymous Venice.

And last but not least comes a t-shirt inspired from a recurring situation of extreme social deficiency.
