Unity of Believers

Scripture: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. -John 17:23

Prayer: Lord, You are God of heaven and earth, and Lord of all the nations. Every person and every family owes their well-being to You, and You alone are the source of all blessings.

Lord, I pray for Philippines, I know You want to bless this place, that Your blessings flow best when Your people are in unity. I lift up the believers of Philippines and I ask Lord that You would break down the walls that divide them. I ask Lord that You would tear down those things that have been built up to protect and isolate.

Lord, bring Your body in Philippines into a place of dependence on You and one another, and remove the obstacles that stand between them. I bind the spirit of fear, that brings division and ask for a fresh boldness to step over these ancient boundaries and embrace one another. May You be glorified Lord through Your people. In Jesus name, amen.

The Toy Repairman

Children make a fuzz when their toys get broken.They have varied reactions ranging from crying to violent tantrums.And most of the times,parents end up making repairs of their broken toys. If their toys get repaired,they end up with winning smiles in their faces.If not, kids feel something very important was lost.

In life,we often commit mistakes.There are past misdeeds which can't be undone.And we end up confused,embittered,remorse and living in regret. But our heavenly Father is just around the corner watching our every move and simply waiting for us to call upon Him for assistance. Jesus Christ is not only the great provider,He is also our great healer and the greatest repairman this world has ever known. He has the full power to heal our wounds and repair broken lives. And like little children, we must have complete trust in Him.

HEAVEN'S TRIUMPH

Once a little cherubim was looking at God in heaven. God was watching the whole earth and His face was full of sorrow and pain. He was very sad and the angel thought a tear was welling in the eyes of the Lord. The angel decided in his heart to make the Lord happy and bring a smile on His face. The angel swooped down to the earth to search for something that will make the Lord smile. In a medium size church, he heard an outstanding sermon by a pastor and he saw that all the church goers were mesmerized by his Gospel message. They were all clapping so loud because of his earth shaking sermon. The angel decided to scoop the sermon in his tiny hands and brought it to the Lord. When he faced the Lord, he bowed down and opened his tiny hands and the sounds and sights of the earth shattering sermon penetrated the whole heaven . The Lord smiled a little but afterwards He became solemn again. The frustrated angel went back to earth and roamed its four corners to seek what will make the Lord smile. From a little cathedral he saw a huge choir singing a heavenly praise and worship song to the Lord as the whole congregation joined in the mighty song. Surely, this will bring a smile to the Lord, the angel thought. He scooped up the praise and worship song of the choir and hurried up to heaven. Facing the Lord again, he opened his tiny hands and there erupted a mighty song of praise and worship that reverberated throughout heaven. The Lord smiled a little but again returned to His somber expression. The angel became desperate. He roamed the whole earth to and fro in search of what can make the Lord smile. Going back to the first church he came from, he heard a faint cry of anguish and pain. Curious, he swooped down to that church and there at the farthest and darkest corner of the church was a solitary man who was beating his breast and was full of tears. He was crying to God and was asking for forgiveness for all his sins as he bowed down to surrender his entire being to God. Suddenly a flash lighted up in the mind of the angel. He scooped the repentance and surrender of the sinful man and flew straight to heaven. When he opened his tiny hands in front of the Lord, the sob and cries of the repentant sinner reverberated throughout heaven and a wide smile broke out in the face of God as He wipes the tears in His eyes. He embraced the tiny angel as the whole heavenly host erupted in triumphant shouts of joy and singing.

Humility is a virtue every Christian should possess, if we claim to walk in the image of our Lord Jesus Christ. For our Savior was of a meek and gentle spirit. He was never arrogant or proud. Neither was He rebellious, boastful nor disrespectful to others and to His Father. He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross. He showed complete and total obedience to the will of God.

But what is humility?

Humility comes from the Latin word “humilitas” and translated as “humble”. It is defined as “A quality by which a person considering his own defects has a humble opinion of himself and willingly submits himself to God and to others for God's sake." It is the quality of being respectful to God and to others. Moreso, it is the art of putting the welfare of others before our own welfare.

Humbleness is the exact opposite of egocentricity, pride, arrogance, vanity and boastfulness. It is an expression of man’s intrinsic self-worth. The act of humility makes us kneel and bow down before our Creator--a virtue God wants us to have for us to claim His promise of undeserved grace.

When pride comes, then comes dishonor, but with the humble is wisdom. The integrity of the upright will guide them, but the falseness of the treacherous will destroy them. (NAS, Proverbs 11:2-3)

My heart bleeds for my country and my people. Barely recovering from the aftermath of tropical Typhoon Ondoy, millions of terrified and grief-stricken Filipinos braced on another typhoon heading towards the country. Can we cope up with this series of natural and man-made disasters? Honestly, neither by our might nor by our strength.

It is my earnest prayer that the Filipino people, specially our national leaders, will do what the people of Nineveh did at the time of Jonah. The people of Nineveh gathered to fast in order to show their sorrow for their sins. They stood and began to confess the sins that they and their ancestors had committed. The King of Nineveh proclaimed a national day of prayer and fasting. Everyone from the greatest to the least prayed fervently to God and gave up their wicked behavior and their evil actions. The great God of Israel changed His mind and stopped from being angry. God saw what they did and the nation of Nineveh was spared from further destruction.

In my carefree childhood, I knew nothing about life's storms. On warm Sunday afternoons, we sailed our catamaran. In a strong breeze, my dad would let my brothers and me hang from the sailboat's center bar. As the boat skimmed the lake, we loved to drag in the water. Water splashed all around us. My dad even taught me how to sail.

But my idyllic childhood changed when the first real storm hit. One day after returning home from middle school, I discovered that my dad suddenly had moved out. He abandoned my mother, my two brothers, and me.

New waves of fear, loneliness, and anger pounded against me like one breaker after another. Before I could catch my breath from the first wave, the next incoming wave toppled me over.

With my parent's separation, my entire life changed. Overnight I lost everything I valued. My dad rarely came home; during the day, my mother avoided home. At night, one brother and I would sit in the dark, crying.

To cope with the storm, I began eating. I would sneak a can of frosting and spoon from the kitchen pantry and hide them under my bed. Soon 25 more pounds hung on me. My food addiction didn't numb the pain. I only felt more miserable.

For the first time, I began to understand my extreme need for something bigger than myself. With my dad gone, the agonizing pain awakened me to a new emptiness. As a child, I had heard of Jesus Christ. But this storm helped me realize that I didn't know Him.

A couple of months later, I knelt alone in my room and prayed, "Jesus, I feel so alone. Please come into my life. Thank you for dying on the cross and rising from the dead. Please fix my family." Through this simple prayer, I traded in a worthless religion for an invaluable relationship.

But my life wasn't perfect after I met Jesus. Although my dad did return home during my high school years, a few years later he divorced my mother. I hated my dad for being selfish. He broke my heart.

Through the years, I discovered that there was no real lasting relief from painful memories and bitterness apart from Jesus. Though it took a long time, He began to lead me gently down a path towards healing. And He helped me begin the process of forgiving, especially my dad.

Many times during those turbulent years, I thought the storm would destroy me. I desperately wanted to be rescued. But God didn't rescue me the way I wanted, and He didn't answer every prayer the way I wanted Him to either. My parents still divorced.

Although at times I longed for the carefree days of my childhood to return, the storms gave me a new perspective and ultimately led me to Jesus. And He began teaching me how to navigate through the fierce storms by relying upon Him and clinging to His promise: He won't ever leave me or forsake me.[1]

My father was in confinement at a government hospital in Manila because of persistent cough associated with weight loss and intermittent fever. A thorough medical exam was done on him to include chest x-ray, bronchoscopy,ct-guided biopsy and a lung scan. Bronchial washings and minute lung tissues were submitted for biopsy. The entire family was restless and apprehensive. I, for one, was feeling all sorts of emotions ranging from anxiety to fear.

December 20, 2003

I went to another hospital in Manila to pick up the lung biopsy results of Papa. As a physician, I know deep inside what the results would be. Yet, with palms sweating and heart heavily pounding, I slowly opened the white envelope containing the typewritten biopsy results.It states: Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma. In layman’s terms-Lung Cancer.

I was dumbfounded…I stood still for a few minutes not fully grasping the reality looming in front of me. Tears started streaming down. And I’m getting frank stares from other people. Frankly, I don’t give a damn! My mind was in a topsy-turvy, totally confused and bogged down. How will I break the news to Papa and the rest of the family?

Gathering my strength, I headed towards the elevator and proceeded to the hospital’s chapel at the 7th floor. Once inside the chapel, I poured out my questions and denials. Why Papa? He’s not even a smoker. Why so sudden? A lots of why. It couldn’t be true! Maybe the pathologist made a mistake. I broke down and cried my heart out to God.

Suddenly, my eyes were turned and got fixed at the wooden cross in front of me. It was a spiritual battle. I prayed hard to Jesus Christ for comfort and strength.Then,calmness engulfed me.I remembered God’s words: “Come to me,you who are heavily burdened and I will give you rest”.

I have found total acceptance and obedience to His will.

December 26, 2003

Papa spent Christmas in his hospital bed. He insisted that he be discharged from the hospital. I recalled his words: “I don’t want to spend New Year’s Eve in this cold and lonely place. Bring me HOME".

December 30, 2003

Papa was scheduled for chemotherapy. But before initiation of treatment, liver function test and liver scan were requested. A primary carcinoma was found at his liver. (Damn these cancer cells!!!).Further results revealed derangement of liver and its functions to 70-80%.The doctors informed me and my mom that treatment is impossible. There’s no way Papa could tolerate chemotherapy and its side effects. Cancer cells have spread and his illness beyond cure.

January 3, 2004

By this time, Papa was resigned to his fate. He prepared for his forthcoming reunion with our Creator--seeking forgiveness from all whom he has offended and forgiving all who have hurt him. He confessed his sins and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior.

It was so typical of my dad. Nobody knows what’s going on his mind. He was preserved, quiet, calm and so BRAVE….

January 15, 2004

At two o’clock in the morning, Papa succumbed to his illness. He died peacefully. I’m just thankful God answered our prayers. HE didn’t let my father suffer much. No aching pains, no groaning, no howling, no chemotherapy and its effects, no morphine…..Just a beautiful smile on his face.

Six years has passed and the only thing left is his memory. And the gnawing pain and truth that still hurts: I am just a human being living in a borrowed time.And I'm a physician who couldn’t even cure her own father.

It was God who healed him of all his earthly pains…..

Jesus Christ on one of his sermons taught his disciples (and would be disciples) to work for food that gives eternal life. And the kind of food that God gives is the one who came down from heaven to give life in the world.

‘Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her “Give me a drink”. (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you ‘Give me a drink’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water”.’ John 4:1-10

As faithful servants of God, how then do we feed our hungry and thirsty souls?

First and foremost, is by daily reading of the Bible and contemplating on His words.Second, is by reading a variety of Christian literature and articles. Third, is by listening to sermons and preaching during Church services. Meditate on each one of them....

And like the Samaritan woman at the outskirts of Sychar, God’s words will quench our thirst and satisfy our gnawing hunger.

The Sound of Heavenly Music

The sound of music refreshes our hearts and minds. But Christian music kindles up our downtrodden and desperate spirits!

The Book of Psalms consists of 150 prayers and hymns that were used by Hebrew people as part of their worship. Rich in beauty and wisdom, they continue to be an important part of Jewish and Christian worship.

David, the great King of Israel, composed a great number of psalms and songs to express the longings of his soul. He played a number of musical instruments to show his love and reverence to the great God of Israel.

After thousands of years, Christian worship remains the same. Music is still an integral part of praise and worship. And today’s Christian music expresses a wide range of human emotions ranging from joy to fear, from anger to trust and from despair to hope. Music Ministry continues to be an important part of true Christian worship.

Children are God’s greatest gift to any family. They are a true source of joy to every parent. Who among us will not agree that their smiles,kisses and hugs drain us out of fatigue and anxiety? Our kids serve as our inspiration and motivation. They are the primary reason why we strive hard to build a better life, a better society and a better world to live in.

No Christian men and women, therefore, should deprive a child of love, guidance and a caring home. Neither should we allow the exploitation and abuse of these innocent yet blessed little ones. It is the responsibility of every grown-up and responsible adult to guide their paths and to help them achieve their dreams and aspirations. It is also our responsibility to lead them to their spiritual growth and personal salvation.

This is the very essence of Children’s Ministry—to train children in becoming partakers of God’s holy kingdom.

“Train a child in the way he should go and when he is grown up, he shall not depart from it” Proverbs 22:6

THY CUP OF SUFFERING
