Indre Mission Society completes sale of the Ebenezer Mission House

After 106 years the Ebenezer Mission House at Holmsland Klitvej, Hvide Sande has been sold by the Indre Mission Society to Gadshill DK Filial, the Danish branch of the UK company Gadshill Ltd.

Gadshill Ltd is 100 per cent owned by Charles Enevoldson, the Grandson of Thyge Andersen Enevoldsen.

In 1910 Thyge Andersen Enevoldson donated the necessary funds to enable the Mission House to be built to honour his mother and father. Since that time the house has served as a place of worship for the local community.

However following a recent decision by the local church members to build a new church in the town centre the old building was no longer required.

In order to preserve the building, 63 year old Charles Enevoldson agreed to purchase the house from the Mission Society and the sale was completed in July 2016.

Mark Temple, the Grandson of George Temple who served and sadly died onboard the Lord Deramore has contacted the site. This is what he has to say.

My name is Mark Temple, my grandfather was George Temple, he was the 22 year old Trimmer who also died onboard the Lord Deramore and was close in age to Harold Enevoldson. I read with much interest the material you have posted with regard to the trawlers, it's all so tragic. I would like to pay my respects to my grandfather although I doubt there is a grave of any description. When I was a child I heard a story that there was a grave stone on "some island" but this seams unlikely. Would you know?
I gather moves are afoot to establish a memorial at St Andrew's Quay, Hull. I will chase up on that later. I now live in Australia.

During World War II, Harold Dean Enevoldson served in the RNR as Skipper of a Mine Sweeper Trawler. During the War many trawlers were commandeered by the Navy to carry out the role of Mine Sweeping and many trawler skippers and their crew were enlisted. Following the sinking of the Lord Deramore, Thyge Andersen Enevoldsen's son Harold and the other surviving crew members were rescued by a Norwegian navy patrol boat. They had survived for 12 hours in a terrific snowstorm and stormy seas.

Here is a copy of a letter sent to Harold's mother and Thyge's wife to tell her how her son was coping after his traumatic experience.

NOTICE is hereby given that all creditors and

other persons having any claims or demands

against the estate of Thyge Anderson Enevoldson,

late of 210, Park Avenue, in the city and county

of Kingston-uppn-Hull, Fisherman (Skipper,

deceased (who died on the 6th day of March,

1933, and whose Will was proved in the Principal

Obituary to Enevold Thygesen written by Mr Jens Vang Andersen 13 February 1922

Old Enevold Thygesen, the oldest man on Holmsland Klit - a veteran from the war of 1848 - 49, has passed.
He died on Thursday, 9th February 1922, at the age of 94 years and six months.

Old Enevold Thygesen as he was usually called, was born at Sonder Lyngvig in the year of 1827. In his young days he was a fisherman like most people out here. Only 21 years of age, a short time before the war started in 1848, he married Mariane, but being of no means, and Enevold soon to go away to serve as a soldier, they could not afford it, nor did they have the time to start a home of their own.

He went to war serving on one of the navy gun boats and fought in the battle of Fredericia. Later on they bought a small lot of heath where they set up a small house with rooms with mud floor. In this same house, which has certainly undergone a few changes since, Enevold and his wife who died less than three years ago, lived their whole long lives.

They had about 70 years of married life together and lived to celebrate their golden as well as their diamond wedding and even the 65th anniversary of their wedding.

For many years they struggled hard to fight poverty, especially as they had a family of 12 children to raise. But with Enevold and his wife it came to pass as the old truth has it; with the industrious man poverty may get as far as to look through the windows, but she never crosses the threshold. When there was nothing to be fetched from fishing Enevold tackled other tasks and for several years he worked as a diver together with his brother in law, Niels Andersen who was his neighbour.

About 40 years ago, when the children had grown up, he handed the property, large enough to allow for the keeping of 3 cows, to one of his sons by the name of Iver, but the parents stayed on with the son and daughter-in-law with whom they had always had the best of relations.

Many years hence Enevold kept on fishing, until 28 years ago his legs grew weaker and he could no longer stand walking. Then he started making fishing nets, and with this work he busied himself until last autumn, when he had to go to bed.

What a pleasure it was to visit old Enevold Thygesen and his wife and to listen to them telling the story of their lives and struggles, which had not made them dull and stubborn, but led them to their God and Saviour. Old Enevold always had a look of content in his face and you always saw him with a gay smile. He liked reading, without glasses, in his Bible and other devoted books, and he enjoyed singing hymns and songs.

It is true that since his wife died he sometimes saying it with a small sigh, found it lasting too long before God could use him, and lately, bed-ridden with his limbs aching, he might exclaim: "Oh, my Lord and Saviour, have you entirely forgotten me, the old sinner. Oh, let me go home to meet all my dear ones who went before me." And when now calling him the Lord has surely said to him: "Come home to me you old and faithful servant to meet all your dear ones."

The Cuckoo serves in World War 1 as a minesweeper.

The Royal Navy requisitioned the Cuckoo from the Yorkshire Steam Fishing Co. of Hull in 1914 for use as a minesweeper. The ship was returned to commercial use in 1919. At some point in her RN service she was renamed Nightjar.

Thyge Andersen Enevoldsen was skipper of the Cuckoo. The steam trawler was built in 1896 by Messrs Cook, Welton and Gemmell at their yard on Humberside. The firm was founded in 1883 on South Bridge Road, Hull, on the Humber bank. The founding partners were William James Cook, Charles Keen Welton and William Gemmell. In 1901-1902 the firm moved to a new yard at Grovehill, Beverley.

Cook and Welton were both born in London, and served apprenticeships as boilermaker and plater respectively in London shipyards. After years of talking about their plans and their vision for how the industry could develop, they scraped together enough funds to form a partnership.

In 1872 they moved up to Hull together when they obtained the contract for the iron work on two warships being built by Earle's Shipbuilding and Engineering Co.

William Gemmell was born in Scotland, and served an apprenticeship as a shipwright at Earle's in Hull. Cook and Gemmell found a kindred spirit and the three went into business together in 1883, leasing property at Sammy's Point, Hull – where The Deep stands today.
Their first ship was an iron sailing smack called the Precursor, built for Robert Hellyer in 1885. The vessel was a success at a time when iron-hulled boats were still in their infancy. Cook, Welton and Gemmell (CWG) quickly showed they could handle any size of contract and more orders followed as their workforce grew.

Thyge writes about the Cuckoo in his log. These are his own words.

"Commenced with the ss Cuckoo on the 24th of Feb 1896 in which I had a ⅛ or 8/64 shares. I paid one hundred pound down and the rest I paid 5% on with the Yorkshire S.T Co. and in one year and six month I was clear. It was then turned into a limited Liability Company of £30000 in 3000 ten pound shares. I got my share one hundred and eighty seven shares which was my share in the Cuckoo. The sum of two pound ten shillings been paid up and Mr. C Pickering & H Russel and of course Mr J. McCann being directors. J. McCann was also the manager, we were seven of us what formed the company all shareholders in the “Cuckoo” and the “Lord Charles Beresford” the only two ships what the company had up till then. "

Many friends, relatives and followers of this site have recently asked me about the significance of Vardo, a small town off the Norwegian coast and why it warranted a mention. I should have explained at the time that Thyge Andersen Enevoldsen's trawler ran aground off the coast of Vardo on 6th March 1933. It was Vardo that the surviving crew members were taken and indeed the local Vardo hospital were they received medical attention.

Harold Dean Enevoldson was one of the survivors and as Thyge's son it must have been a traumatic experience for him to observe his Father waving farewell before the trawler sank. On 8th March 1933, the Fiskerhjemmet Betel of Vardo visited the survivors in hospital. In a letter to Thyge's wife, he writes that he had the opportunity "to talk a little to the two young men who lay there, and who were so distressed after 12 hours terrible experience in terrific snowstorm and stormy sea"

He continues by explaining that Harold Enevoldson had asked him to pray for his father and for him. After praying Harold explained that his Father was a good Christian. The prayers appear to have provided Harold with some consolation and the Fiskerhjemmet Betel thought that Harold's young heart, so torn by sorrow, received some comfort from the words of God.

By the time of writing the letter the young Harold was out of danger, only his fingers were "still a little dead after being frostbitten". Given that Harold was only wearing a few clothes it was a miracle that he survived such an ordeal. He was terribly distressed and spoke the whole time of his Father, and even at the hospital even when he was nearly unconscious and being attended to by the medical staff he spoke of his Father.

The source of the above is taken from a letter that Fiskerhjemmet Betel wrote to Gertrude Enevoldson dated 8th March 1933. The original letter was recently donated by Helen Enevoldson to the Hull History Centre.

This very short movie shows Audrey Enevoldson visiting the homestead in Denmark where her Father was born. The visit appears to have taken place in June 1978. I think Krista Veise, Audrey's cousin is also in the movie and possibly other relatives. It is interesting to see the old homestead which was recently renovated. The homestead in 1978 seems to be still very isolated whereas today it is surrounded by modern houses in the middle of a housing estate.

Vardo

Vardø is the eastern most town in Norway and the Nordic countries, east of Saint Petersburg, Kiev and Istanbul. The eastern part of Finnmark is in the same time zone as the rest of the country, even if it is more than an hour at odds with daylight hours.
The port of Vardø, on the Barents Sea, remains ice-free all year round thanks to the effect of the warm North Atlantic drift. Vardø is usually referred to as Norway's only mainland town in the Arctic climate zone, although this is not strictly correct since the town is located on an island about 2 kilometres (1 mi) off the northeastern coast of the Varanger Peninsula. In July, the 24-hr average temperature is only 9.1 °C (48 °F), while the January average is a modest −5.1 °C (23 °F).

Kathleen Irene Rawdon was the wife of Harold Dean Enevoldson. Harold was the second eldest son from Thyge Andersen Enevoldsen's second marriage to Gertrude Emily Dean. Kathleen was born in Hull in 1911. She was the daughter of Harold Percy Rawdon and Ann Asher. Kathleen married Harold in 1932. They had 6 children. Kathleen died in 1959 aged 48 years.

Leslie Ivor Enevoldson (B. 1916 - D. 1983)

Leslie was the fifth child born to Thyge and his second wife Gertrude. He was born in Withernsea which is a small coastal resort to the east of Hull. In 1938 he married Olga Edith Ellis.

Leslie was accepted as a pupil to William Poskitt Watson etc. Architects and Surveyors of Monument House, Hull on 28 January 1933. He registered as Probationer RIBA on 17 August 1933 and completed Pupilship 26 September 1936. He was elected as Student RIBA on 19 October 1937.

He visited the homestead of his Father Thyge in 1978. Below is a photograph of Leslie sitting in his GrandFather's chair.

Leonard Enevoldson 1933

Leonard Andersen Enevoldson was born in 1910 and was the second child born to Thyge and his second wife Gertrude. This photograph of Leonard was taken in 1933 when he returned to the Holmsland to visit his Danish cousins. The young lady with arms draped over Leonard is Krista Andersen, his 1st cousin once removed. Krista would have been 15 years of age at the time of the photograph. Krista later married Andreas Veise and she maintained contact with her English cousins up until her death in 2001.

Leonard lived in Hull all of his life, working as a Fish Merchant on the Hull Fish Dock. He married Patricia and they lived happily together until January 2001 when sadly they both died with days of eachother. Leonard was affectionately known as Uncle Tubby by his many nieces and nephews.

This is the house where Thyge Andersen was born.

The Bible

On the day of the consecration, Gertrude Enevoldson, Thyge's wife, presented a Bible to the congregation. The Bible has been lovingly cared for by each passing generation and is still present in the Mission House today. Over the years, when the children of Thyge and Gertrude Enevoldson visited the Mission House they signed the Bible.

First to sign was Thyge's son Leonard Anderson Enevoldson when he visited the Mission in August 1933, not long after Thyge's death. Daughter Audrey and her brother Leslie visited in June 1978. Son Stuart and his wife Vera visited in June 1985. Son John visited in October 1996 and Iver and his wife Marian and sister Audrey visited in 1993.
