Tiburon-TV’s Viktoria interviewed the mobile social location expert on trends in mobile and applications.

„We’re seeing better and better datasets – a lot of tools for developers to build things with“ explains Matt. „Also, the devices and what you can do with them is expanding. There are phones with compasses and GPS and we’re playing with augmented reality. The phone is becoming something that is not just a communication device but part of your social life.“

According to Matt, the next big thing could well come from a small startup. „A downturn is a great time to start a startup. It’s a time to be daring and make a new company on no money“ Matt says. His tip is: „ Get outside the valley bubble, start a company in a little low-rent East Berlin back office and change the world from Europe!“

Andy Budd is founding partner and Managing Director of Clearleft, a Brighton-based user experience design consultancy. In his interview with Tiburon-TV’s Viktoria he provides a summary of topics he discussed during his design & UX session at Web 2. 0 Expo New York.

For Andy, the key factors for creating the perfect customer experience are an amazing first impression as well as a quick and easy website which enables game-like behavior and is fun to use: „At the end of the day it’s all about thoughtful design and seduction. Bring in emotion, personality and humanity to the site and try to create an holistic experience“, the user experience designer says. But Andy also looks at the importance of small things: „Big stuff is easy, it’s the small things that get left out. The devil is in the detail: It’s the details that really mean stuff to people.“

Andy is also the author of the best selling book CSS Mastery and curator of the dConstruct and UX London events.

There is more to come from Web 2.0 Expo New York! Click here for all interviews.

Inside the New York startup scene: At Web 2.0 Expo New York, Tiburon-TV’s Viktoria met with Roger Wu – co-founder and president of Big Apple-based KlickableTV. The interactive video platform allows users to create „klickable“ videos and lets viewers click on anything inside a video, interact with and find out more about the objects displayed. „We want to make video interactive and then last but not least help monetize the long tail of it“ Roger explains.

According to the young entrepreneur, anybody who can tag a Facebook photo can make a clickable video: „The easier it is, the better. Think of our solution like plastic wrap – we put this invisible wrap around the video with our technology so you can embed it anywhere you want. We really want to open it up so you can get as creative as you possibly can with it.“ That’s also what gives Klickable an edge over competitors: „We feel that we have the easiest product and the most portable solution out there“ Roger says.

Stay tuned – more interviews from Web 2.0 Expo New York will follow in the coming days.

Easy communication across cultures and language barriers: Multiculti social network XIHA Life allows users to communicate with friends in various languages and meet new people from different cultures. After developing the XIHA brand in the European market, the Helsinki-based startup will now be pushing its service in the US, co-founder Jani Penttinen says.

To get the word out in US and to target more effectively its core user group, immigrants, XIHA hired an American PR firm. „It’s worth it – the U.S. market is far easier to monetize than most other nations“ adds Jani. His recommendation for other startups is to be in the US in person and not operate only from Europe: „Visit Silicon Valley for a few weeks and go to the PlugandPlayTechCenter or other incubator-type of places with a high of concentration of startups.“

Jeff Jarvis – author of What Would Google Do? – is writing a new book centered around living in the state of constant beta. In his interview with Tiburon-TV’s Viktoria at Web 2.0 Expo New York, he introduces the customer-centered approach: „When we create a product, the sooner in our process we can bring in our costumers, the better. Beta’s are both a call for collaboration and an active openness. People give you value in the form of good ideas.“

According to Jeff, even startups are beta and have to learn what they are as they develop: „They start up with one vision and end up with a different vision. That’s what matters. There is no such thing as perfection.“ But he also makes it clear that the internet demands specialization: „Specialization brings efficiency, higher targeting and higher value. If you try to do ten things, you’ll do each one badly. You have to decide what your best value is.“ This boils down to Jeff’s golden rule: Do what you do best, link to the rest!

Stay tuned! There’s more to come from Web 2.0 Expo New York…
