Executive produced by Audie Gemora and directed by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, the West Side Story will be brought to life in Manila with an exciting cast features Christian Bautista as Tony, Karylle and Joanna Ampil alternating as Maria, Rowena Vilar and Pam G alternating as Anita, and Gian Magdangal as Riff.

July 20: Julius Babao's Art 40 auction

This July, Julius Babao is mixing all the elements of passion, art, friendship and investments into a palette of noble enterprise.He has parlayed his connections into donating paintings for a fundraising auction where all proceeds will go into building an entire village for Gawad Kalinga in Bagong Silang, Caloocan.

To date, close to 100 artists have signed up and he's still getting calls from artists who wish to join the undertaking. The auction will be held on July 20 at Pintô Art Gallery, Antipolo.

After the houses are built, Babao plans to invite all the involved artists to paint murals on the façades of the house to inject public art into the community.

"Art is not just for appreciation," he says. "I have a lot of passion for it and I want to use it to help those who need it."

June 25-July 6: Virgin Labfest4 at the CCP

The Virgin Labfest 4, the most awaited theater festival in the country today, will be held once again at the Cultural Center of the Philippines from June 25 until July 6, 2008, with a stellar roster of writers, directors and actors headlining the performances of 18 one-act plays and staged readings of six other works. Now on its fourth year, the Virgin Labfest, has earned a solid reputation for its exciting and provocative line-up of "untried, untested, unpublished and unstaged" plays from playwrights both young and old. Complementing these are a workshop for high school students who wish to learn more about the craft of playwriting, a contest for owners of blogs (web logs or online journals), the launching of Ma-Yi Theater Company's anthology Savage Stage, and a public interview with National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose by journalist Howie Severino.

The Virgin Labfest 4 runs from June 25 to July 6 and is presented by the Writers Bloc and Tanghalang Pilipino with the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, in cooperation with Boysen Paints, Japan Foundation Manila Office, and Miss Mae Paner. OTHER EVENTS
National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose will share his thoughts with Howie Severino in a forum titled "From Page to Stage: The Novelist in Front of the Footlights" on July 5.

Staged readings of six other "virgin" plays will also be presented every night from June 25 to 29. On July 3, there will be a reading of selected excerpts from Ma-Yi Theater Company's anthology Savage Stage, most of which have been performed by the company.

The Labfest Blogfest offers active bloggers to win prizes. All they have to do is attend the first weekend performances and write a web blog or online journal within 48 hours after watching the program they saw. Winners will be chosen for each set of Labfest plays and receive gift certificates and other merchandise.

In the Virgin Labfest Lab, high-school students who are interested in theater and playwriting will be mentored throughout the festival by writer-director Njel de Mesa, after which the students are expected to write short plays to be presented in a staged reading on the last day of the Festival.

But beneath these secrets and lies are more secrets and lies and it seems the death of Gloria, no matter how sanitized, would only leak their foul stench even more.

Dong-ao is a traditional Ilokano funeral ceremony where relatives and friends pay tribute to the deceased. In this short play, Pepe Samson, the lead character in F. Sionil Jose's novel Mass is dead. Several characters speak in front of his coffin, before he is laid to rest: Senator Reyes, Pepe's Aunt Bettina, his college professor-mentor Badong Hortenso, his parish priest friend Father Jess, Colonel White Sidewall, and an old woman Tia Nena who served in the parish where Pepe once stayed. The divergent views uttered by the characters depict a fragmented nation, teetering between complete collapse and newfound hope and direction.

Framed by an unfinished game of chess between Vera, a highly decorated military officer, and Guzman, an esteemed activist, the play unfolds as an interrogation of Gomez, a younger militant. In layered scenes that shift from intense examinations to harrowing scenes of humor, budding fascism, and brutish attacks on human sensibility, 'Masaganang Ekonomiya' offers an emasculated contemporary look on the age-old conflict between the establishment and the insurgents, in the context of a globalization- obsessed nation.

No institution is sacred, and everything is subverted, as persuasion fails and spirals downward to an orgy of brutality and excess.

To Denise's utter dismay, the condition turns out to be a half-forgotten joke. This melodramatic (and literal) reversal of fortune becomes black hilarity in the hands of George Kabristante. More like his reprise and variation on a theme that he started in last year's Labfest, My Padir is an OCW.

J. Dennis C. Teodosio's Gumamela

"Gumamela" is more than just about hibiscus rosa sinensis or its botanical characteristics and pharmacological effects. It tells the bitter-sweet- campy story of man who contemplates what's there in 40 missed calls, in 40 minutes of waiting, and in 40 years of loneliness, love, and life, between serious bouts of suicide attempts and the desire to eat a sumptuous slice of chocolate cake.

The play is a bitter yet funky peppered with a Radio Active Sago Project kick-ass take on the cruelties of our society that condones discrimination which is definitely not so cool.

The elegance of decadence and its inevitable slide into self-destruction introduces one of this year's Labfest's most endearing/terrifying characters.

To settle who among the two is stronger in a woman, Harmony and Discord was given a scenario where their counterparts Ms. Ferra and Georgia Oh influence the lives of Porcelaine and Virni. Porcelaine is an egoistic woman who got a Toobright Scholarship. Virni is a manipulator, but when she met Porcelaine, they somehow agreed on what constitutes art. The interplay of the women and the "Goddesses" results in a battle where no one is the winner and the loser. The politics of women are hard to define, they can betray each other and they can come together. In this world of faux art, what is real and what is unreal?

This play is based on a true story that happened in Malaysia. An old Malaysian Chinese businessman dies leaving his wife and son the beginning of their troubles. In the middle of funeral, following the traditional Chinese ceremony, two Muslims come to claim the body of their brother Muslim insisting that the dead man should be buried in proper Muslim cemetery. They have proof that the deceased Lin Shunfu has converted to Islam. His official I.D. bears the name of a Muslim. Thus begins the travails of a family caught in between two faiths and a government unable to address the problem that has turned into a national issue.

This is a retelling of the Manobo version of the sky maiden who marries a mortal lad. Terengati, the protagonist whose name means bird hunter, does exactly that - he hunts birds for a living. Like other folktales, this story is rich in fantasy and has a touch of romance. Terengati's search for his wife is as an adventure that may be hard to believe but its resolution is realistic and is drawn from actual family experience.

REPERTORY PHILIPPINES AND FRIENDS OF REPERTORY

Festival of Raw Artists

forArtists is a showcase of original, raw and innovative works of playwrights and scriptwriters. The festival will be a collaboration of theatre artists and aims to provide them with the opportunity to develop and exhibit their material on the REP stage.

This year Friends of Repertory or simply F.O.R was re-launched as a partner of Repertory Philippines (REP), comprised of theater performers and aficionados from various backgrounds and orientations. The group holds together for the love of REP and the long-term goal of instilling within the Filipino a key appreciation of theater and the performing arts.

With the aim of raising theater awareness and bringing the experience of theater to a broader audience, F.O.R.'s forArtists will highlight Repertory Philippines' thrust in building a theater industry that can provide actors, directors, designers, choreographers, musicians, dancers, and all those who would like to work in theater the opportunity to do so.

forArtists will continue F.O.R.'s mission to open up avenues in which all theater and non-theater-oriented members of the community may interact and collectively recognize the importance of theatre in society today.

Mechanics:

Present a script of a one-act straight play, musical, or musical revue (attach a brief summary/plot). Include all the necessary music (song clips, CD accompaniment, etc.)
Material must be original and must never have been staged by a professional company.
Material should live up to the standards of Repertory Philippines---
high-quality and meaningful.
Material must showcase fresh, raw, and innovative ideas and storylines.
Material must be in English.
No less than 30 minutes in length.
Must not exceed 45 minutes in run time.

The materials chosen will be featured and staged at OnStage Greenbelt 1 as part of forArtists in October 2008.

Leading up to the showcase of the playwright/author's work, the play will undergo intense workshops, from script revision to final staging, by notable Repertory Philippines Directors and veteran theatre artists (Baby Barredo, Joy Virata, Robbie Guevara, Chari Arespacochaga) at key points in the rehearsal process. This will give the directors of the chosen shows a chance to polish and flesh out their staging while
providing the playwright/author time to perfect their material come stage time.

Each playwright/author whose work is chosen will be given 10,000 php to use for the staging of their work. They will be in charge of choosing the director, actors, crew, and whomever they wish to be part of their artistic and production team.

They may also hold auditions or invite theatre artists from Repertory Philippines or any professional and amateur theatre companies.

Participants will be able to earn money through ticket selling and soliciting sponsorships for the said event.

Tentative Schedule:

July 15 – Awarding of Chosen Plays
October 10 – Show Day

Theatre artists, critics and aficionados will be invited to watch and review the shows featured in F.O.R.'s forArtists.

During the rehearsal process, FOR will schedule consultation and preview dates in which REP directors and theatre veterans will be able to watch and critique the raw material (at least three times a month) and provide the playwright/author/director insights in staging to help polish the shows in preparation for the event gala.

Contest Guidelines and Mechanics

1. The contest is open to all Filipino citizens, 13-35 years old.

2. All entries must incorporate the slogan: "The Tobacco Industry Catches You Young: Break the Tobacco Marketing Net."

3. Entries should be submitted in jpeg digital format, 300 dpi.

4. Participants may submit a maximum of two entries.

5. Entry forms are available at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila. Contest guidelines and application forms may be requested at tobaccofreeyouth@gmail.com.

6. The entry form must be accompanied by a duly signed waiver, which is provided with the application form.

7. Contest entries with duly accomplished entry forms and waivers may be submitted personally to the Metropolitan Museum of Manila until May 27, 5:00pm or via email at tobaccofreeyouth@gmail.com.

8. All entries must be original. They must have not been previously exhibited or awarded a prize in another contest.

9. Awards given to works which are subsequently proven to be non-original, with plagiarized compositions, will be revoked/reclaimed without prejudice to other legal actions.

10. The decision of the Board of Judges shall be final and is not subject to appeal.

11. Judging of entries will be on May 28.

12. Fifteen (15) finalists will be chosen from among the entries. The winning entries will receive the following prizes:
First Prize – PhP 20, 000
Second Prize – PhP 15,000
Third Prize – PhP 10,000
The non-winning finalists will each receive P2,000.00.

13. Select entries will be printed in large-format and exhibited at the Museum from May 30 until July 2008.

14. Announcement of winners and awarding of prizes will be made during the exhibit opening on May 30.

15. Failure to comply with the rules and regulations shall automatically disqualify the participant.

16. The DOH reserves the right to use the winning entries in its Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign.

THE CCP OPENS ITS DOORS TO NEW PERFORMANCES IN WAITING IN THE WINGS

Once again the Cultural Center of the Philippines opens its doors to new works and artists with WAITING IN THE WINGS, a festival of works in progress. If you have a never-been-staged dance, music or theater piece which is between 30 and 45 minutes in length, you are qualified to join this program. Works in progress, pieces which are not quite finished are welcome!

We will provide you the use of the venue for the day so you can stage your work. After each show, a brief interaction with the audience will be held so that you can get their feedback, and in this way, improve your work-in-progress.

Among the alumna of this program are award winning playwrights Edward Perez, Njel de Mesa and Jose Victor Torres, Felimon Blanco who went on to stage his "The Last Tape" in the Singapore Arts Festival and world renowned dancer Enrico Labayen.

The Virgin Labfest 4, the most awaited theater festival in the country today, will hold open auditions at the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Bulwagang Amado Hernandez on May 28 and 29, 2008 (Wednesday and Thursday), 6:00 – 9:00 P.M.

The Virgin Labfest, now on its fourth year, has earned a solid reputation for its exciting and provocative line-up of "untried, untested, unpublished and unstaged" one-act plays from playwrights both young and old. The line-up for Virgin Labfest 4 includes plays by National Artist F. Sionil Jose, award-winning playwrights Layeta Bucoy, Tim Dacanay, Allan Lopez, Job Pagsibigan, Debbie Tan and Dennis Teodosio, as well as newcomers to Festival such as Carlo Garcia, Anna Marie Gonzales, Jovi Miroy, Khavn de la Cruz and Malaysian writer Koh Jun Eiow.

Among those tapped to direct the plays are Virgin Labfest "veterans" Niel de Mesa, George de Jesus III, Cats Racsag, Tuxqs Rutaquio, Roobak Valle, J. Victor Villareal and Toshiisa Yoshida, and festival first-timers Dennis Gupa, Chris Millado, Floy Quintos, Paolo O'Hara, Leo Rialp and Tiffany Santuyo. Rody Vera is the Festival's Artistic Director.

The auditions are open to all actors and actresses 18 years and above. Everyone is expected to bring two photos (a head shot and full-body shot) as well as a resume, and they may be asked to read scenes from some of the festival plays.

The Virgin Labfest 4 runs from June 25 to July 6 and is presented by the Writers Bloc and Tanghalang Pilipino with the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

Designed for the beginning photographer, students learn about camera handling and operation, principles of exposure, shutter speed, aperture, focal length, and basic composition and lighting. PHOTO 2 - EXPOSURE TO PHOTOGRAPHERS

A bridge class between learning technique in PHOTO 1 and Exploring Expression in PHOTO 3, this class is a mix of third world tips for first world images in terms of lighting, technique. Photographing our daily lives to make a journal of sorts is the best way to evaluate and transform the way we see things. Students will embark on a path to self-discovery, having to photograph everyday forthe duration of the course, regardless of other commitments. The contact sheet, whether analog or digital, will form a structure for seeing by mapping the daily evolution of perception. Students will produce individual journals that will provide a framework for their imagery and writing. By the end of the course, students will have uncovered new aspects of their creativity and themselves.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:

JOHANN ESPIRITU has had several exhibits, and is currently working on two books which should be out later this year. His work has been displayed in newspapers, magazines, billboards and even featured in limited-edition postage stamps. Two of his photos were named as part of the 200 Best Images of 2006 by Epson Philippines. A lawyer by profession, Johann was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 2001 and to the New York State Bar in 2004.

KIDLAT DE GUIA graduated with a degree in Broadcast Communications from the University of the Philippines. In 2003, his video "Banal Tubig, Banal Kahoy" received the Award of Excellence in the Aqua Planet Video Festival in Seian, Japan. Kidlat was also one of the 10 chosen participants of the Peter Bialobrezski workshop given by the Goethe Institut in Silverlens Gallery last January. He is currently working as a freelance documentary filmaker and photographer.

ISA LORENZO graduated from the New School University-Parsons School of Design in New York City with a Master of Arts in Media Studies and Photography. She has shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, and the Thomas Werner Gallery, all in New York City; and at the UNESCO House in Paris; and at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and Silverlens Gallery in Manila. Her work has been collected in the United States and Asia. She is currently the Creative Director of silverlens, inc., a gallery specializing in photography and new media.

RACHEL RILLO graduated from the Academy of Art College, San Francisco. In 2000 she moved to Los Angeles to work as a freelance photographer for the television industry. Her clients include FOX TV, UPN, CBS and NBC shooting publicity photographs for the news and shows. Her photography has been published in the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Magazine, La Opinion, and other major publications in the LA area. In the 15 years of living in the US, Rachel Rillo has shown her fine art work in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston. Her work has also been shown at the silverlens gallery in the Manila.

41st Season of PETA: subscribe now!

The Philippine Educational Theater Association presents 5 exciting new plays in its 41st Theater Season.

Opening the season in July, Soxie Topacio directs Nic Tiongson’s NOLI AT FILI DEKADA 2000 (DOS MIL). The play is set in a small town in the Quezon province where the small town politics and social mores become the backdrop of Rizal’s novels. Performances are slated for July 18 to August 24, 2008, Fridays to Sundays at 10am and 3pm.

TOSCA (August 29 and 30, at 2:30pm and 7:30pm) is an adaptation of Puccini’s classic opera piece. PETA sets its interpretation during the Japanese occupation and Tosca becomes the battle ground of Japanese Imperialism, patriotic love and selfish greed.

Christine Bellen’s MGA KUWENTO NI LOLA BASYANG and BATANG RIZAL are back to back presentations of the Children’s Theater productions for September to October. Lola Basyang features three of Severino Reyes’ folktales: Ang Prinsipeng Mahaba ang Ilong, Ang Binibining Tumalo sa Mahal na Hari and Ang Prinsipeng Duwag, tackling the mythical journeys into self discovery and value formation.

Batang Rizal revisits the notions of heroism and love of country from the point of view of a child. Shows will be on September 19 to October 12, 2008, Fridays to Sundays at 10am and 3pm.

SAAN BA TAYO IHAHATID NG DISYEMBRE? is the featured play from November 14 to December 7, with Friday performances at 2:30pm and 7:30pm, and Saturday and Sunday performances at 10am and 3pm. The third of Tony Perez’s trilogy on friendship love and compassion, the play, directed by Nonon Padilla is about the unbreakable love and bonding between best friends and among family members, despite complications of betrayal, jealousy and anger.

The season ends with ADAPTING THE EUROPEAN MASTERS in a pseudo festival that will showcase an end to a ten month project that will take at least forty of our artists be they writers, directors and actors into the study of European playwrights. Shows from February 6 to March 15, 2009, on Fridays at 2:30pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 10am and 3pm.

Season subscriptions is available for only PhP1,000.00. Each subscriber will be entitled to one (1) entry pass to all productions at the Theater Center plus privileges including discounts for up to two (2) companions, regular mail or e-mail updates on the latest happenings in PETA, a subscriber ID and acknowledgment in the souvenir program of all productions.

The Arts Research and Training Institute in Southern Tagalog, Inc. (ARTIST Inc.), in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), will be holding a three-day workshop camp on heritage-based creative pedagogy for science teachers and educators from May 26 to May 28, at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Calamba in Laguna.

The project entitled TAGPUTIHAN Heritage Workshop Camp for Teachers aims to promote understanding of indigenous knowledge system through arts and increase appreciation of tradition-based practices as creative strategy for science education.

Coined from the local terms tagpo (“meeting of the people”) and pagpuputi (“season of harvest”), TAGPUTIHAN will gather one hundred teacher participants along th! e theme of “Climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness” in recognition of the serious effects that global warming cum global cooling could bring on the fragile tropical rainforest ecosystem in the Philippines.

Topics for plenary sessions are the following : “Culture-based Action for Climate Change Adaptation”; “Science as Story and Re-telling”, “Metaphor of Lesson Plan and Classroom”, “Developing Heritage-based Teaching Aids” and “Classroom Evaluation through Performance Art”. High School Musical: The Ice Tour comes to Manila

The Walt Disney Company and Feld Entertainment brings another Disney experience to the Philippines through High School Musical: The Ice Tour in Manila.

The ice show will be held at the Araneta Colisuem on selected dates this July. It is inspired by and will feature elements and songs from the popular American Television film “High School Musical” and its sequel “High School Musical 2″.

The UP Writers Club is proud to present its Summer Writing Workshop for Young Adults!

The workshop will be held from May 26 to 30, 9am to 5pm everyday at the College of Arts and Letters in the University of the Philippines. Participants will get to explore such genres as Sudden Fiction, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Creative Nonfiction/Online Writing, Poetry, and Comic Book Writing/Screenplay Writing.

The workshop fee is Php 3,500 and is inclusive of lunch and snacks, workshop kit and compilation of readings. Registration is open to all high school students, and is limited, so reserve a slot now!
