Are you ever in a Funk?

I hope you’ve had a GREAT summer! I’ve had a very busy one, GOOD busy! But I found myself in a funk. There’s not really any other way to say it, FUNK. Not quite right.

I had some projects I needed to work on and had a free afternoon so I sat down to my machine and began sewing. Half way through the afternoon I realized “I’m feeling really good” and it dawned on me – I’d been so busy I hadn’t taken the time to CREATE in awhile.

I ran across this on Pinterest that evening and it completely summed up my Funk. That built in yearning to create had not been meet. I’m at my best when I can spend a little time each day (or at least often) to meet that inner desire.

What is your inner desire that feeds your soul? Is it creating, writing, serving others. If you don’t know…give it some serious thought.

Be sure to make the time to nourish your soul.

Antique Quilt gift

Hello Everybody!

Once again I’m apologizing for being gone so long. I’m back and reinvigorated to blog. Life’s been crazy and it’s always hard to know what to share and so I just got stumped, but….. I’m truly a teacher at heart. I love to teach, create and inspire so here goes.

I L-O-V-E quilts of any vintage. I’ve collected quilts from different eras. I buy a quilt because I love it. Not because it’s perfect or a particular pattern. If it speaks to me I consider it.

I’ve purchased quilts from private parties, garage sales, resale shops, ebay, you can find them anywhere. I’ve also received them as gifts which brings us to the little lovely below.

My sister and mom gave me this quilt as a gift for my birthday.

It’s all done by hand. Definitely 30’s fabrics.

Here are some close-ups of the sweet little appliqué's.

I love the “binding”. It’s not really binding in the sense that it’s fabric stitched to the front and folded around to the back as we do today. The blue edge is only on the front. It’s stitched to the front edge and then the back is stitched to the quilt “pillowcase style”. You probably can’t see but there are OODLES of miters on that blue edge.

In the picture above the quilt edge is folded back so you can see what I was talking about. The only way I could think this was done included a whole lot of work!!

When you see an old quilt do you ever think about its life? I always do.

70 – 80 years ago, probably a woman, thought so much of a special little one they made this enchanting little quilt for them.

Was it for a baby that was on the way? A special little toddler in someone's life?

Did the child's mother make it? Grandma? A special friend?

What was its life like? It’s in very good condition. The corners are not worn out from being snuggled with or drug around by a child. Was it passed down through a family, or just packed away and forgotten about.

Whatever its story, it’s now living in a home where it is loved and appreciated. I will display it along with other quilts in my home. I’ll always wonder what it’s life was like before coming to live with me.

When I’m not quilting, designing or creating I love taking pictures. I loved taking pictures as a kid on an old box camera that had been my grandparents. I have albums of pictures I took as a kid.

I’ve never stopped taking pictures. Boy have things changed over the years. Today there are such fun programs and applications that can edit and enhance photos. I’ve been playing around with one that’s available as an app for the ipad and also an online site that you can go to and play with your photos. I love that I don’t have to download anything to my computer to use the product.

I took pictures this past weekend at a family gathering. My daughter had a beautiful bouquet of yellow tulips on her table. thought I’d show you the original and a few of the enhanced versions.

Bag LOVE!

In the studio this weekend we had one of the monthly “Sleep in your own Bed Retreats”. Among all the fabulous projects being worked on there was a lot of bag stitching taking place.

A group of us made the "Tango" bag by Silk Road Creations. Love the bag!! It goes together smoothly and we all loved the finished product. What I personally like about it is my ipad fits in the interior pocket perfectly and there’s plenty of room left for anything else I want to carry.

Here’s a peak at our “Tango” bags.

Shirley’s bag (not pictured in the line up above). Shirley was leaving and threw her bag over her shoulder and I just had to take a picture. Is it not adorable on? Thanks for modeling Shirley!

Did you happen to notice a theme in the bags? There was a lot of Sweetwater Love going on when we made these bags. 5 out of 6 of the bags were made with fabric by Moda designers Sweetwater. This happened just by chance, we just showed up with our fabric and ……. you saw what we had! They’re such fun fabrics and they make great bags.

Julie not only finished her “Tango” bag but made this adorable "Pocket Parade Tote" by Penny Sturges of Quilts Illustrated. She made it to be used as a diaper bag.

Sandy also finished 2 bags this weekend. Along with her “Tango” bag she finished this "City Zipper Tote" also by Penny Sturges of Quilts Illustrated. More on this bag in my next post.

Parquet Tablerunner

We had another fun day of Christmas Club classes in the Sweet Treasures studio yesterday. I have 14 women who come to the studio the second Monday of each month to make something for gift giving or decorating with.

This month we were working on tablerunners. I try to plan projects that we can get close to finishing in the three hour class. Most of the time we’re not completely done but just about. Depends on how fast we work ~ or should I say….. how much we talk!

Two tops were finished in class and I thought I’d show you their runners. Barb and Maridell were very good sports. They were so close to finishing and dare I say, umm….. I cracked the whip a bit and encouraged them to push on through and finish. I love their runners!

Well it’s about time my grandma introduced me here. She’s been helping care for me and taking all sorts of pictures so here goes~

My name is Joseph Emmett (Joe for short)

I ~ was born 5 weeks early ~ SURPRISE!!

love my big brother Sam (I look a lot like him)

grunt and squeak a lot

smell really good

really love being held while I sleep

don’t like having dirty diapers

don’t like having my diaper or clothes changed. Exposure’s not my thing!

Well that’s a little about me. I’m thriving and adjusting to this, out of womb life. Everybody seems to think I’m pretty perfect. I’m sure you’ll hear more about me as I grow and change. Grandma’s are kinda that way.

Yes I have 10 toes and 10 fingers.

This is my big brother Sam and I. He loves me so much.

Free Valentine Pattern

For me Valentines Day has always been a day to show those I love how much they mean to me. It’s never been a mushy “couples only” day. My Mom always made the day special for us and I’ve tried to continued that tradition with my kids. We’d have heart shaped Calzone for dinner, maybe some red jello and a special Valentine themed dessert. At each person’s place, a small gift to show my love.

I loved reading about what you’re doing at the beginning of this new year! Thanks so much for taking the time to write. You’ve inspired me.

Reorganizing seemed to be the theme. From crafts, sewing, even priorities (loved that). Some were looking forward to travel and some just trying to survive.

Thanks to those who talked about reflecting and rearranging priorities. Often I’m just “full steam ahead” and need to be quiet and reflect and reorganize priorities. That’s just as important as all the reorganizing of stuff!

Hi Terri. I was having pain and hip problems the last few months, so I mostly stayed in and sewed-easier to make the gifts than shop for them. New Year Giveaway!

Have you started a new project yet! The beginning of a new year just seems like the perfect time to begin a new project. I know it is for me. I thought I’d show you my first little project.

A tablerunner I’m calling “Parquet Tablerunner”. We’ll be making this tablerunner for our February project in the Studio’s Christmas Club. The focus of the Christmas Club is projects for our home or gift giving that isn’t to time consuming. This little guy will fit the bill!

Blessings in the New Year!

Been thinking a lot today about the new year. Really it’s just another day, week, month …… but it always seems to be the time we try and make fresh starts. It’s good to think back a little and plan for the future but most importantly, make the most of today.

As I think of acquaintances and those I love – the things we’ve all experienced of late, there’s only one constant and that’s our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He will always love me, take care of me, help me, and be there for me, and if I allow Him, He will give me joy.

I know one thing about this new year, I choose JOY. I know it will come in many forms and some days the Lord will have to work really hard to give that to me but I know He will if I allow it.

I love Him with all my heart and trust him with my life.

It’s going to be a great year!

A little Burlap & Bling project

I promised down here a tutorial on my project for the Homespun and Holly event. Here it is in detail. Hope you have fun with it. It’s a great little craft project to make as gifts or do with friends. Once everything is prepared (as it was for the participants) it took about 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

Burlap & Bling Framed Tree

Supplies needed:

5” x 7” picture frame

6” x 8” piece of burlap

3/4” x 42” strip of fabric with pinked edges (tree shape)

1” x 5” strip of fabric with pinked edges (tree trunk)

1 – 3/4” blingy button (tree top)

20 – 30 beads (tree decorations)

craft glue

thread and hand sewing needle

black paint

tweezers

rotary cutter with pinking blade or pinking shears

Notes on supplies:

This is a great project for repurposing items. Especially frames and blingy objects. Remember, you can always paint a frame. Watch for cool frames and jewelry that could be used for the top of the tree.

I’ve had the “pinking” rotary blade a long time and finally used it on this project. I love it! It cuts great and is the right tool for this job. Pinking shears will work also if you prefer.

You may use black spray paint or use a sponge applicator with black acrylic paint.

Tweezers! If you don’t own a pair of the tweezers with the point as shown in the picture – you need them (more detailed picture below). They’re great for crafts but if you’re a quilter they are wonderful for holding ends together as they go through the machine.

Step 1:

Take your frame apart. Throw away the packaging and glass. Paint the frame insert black. (the side the picture would lay against). This is painted because they typically come brown, and black looks better faintly showing through the burlap.

Step 2:

Glue the burlap piece flat against the frame insert (over the black painted surface).

Step 3:

Run a basting stitch through the center, the length of both fabric strips (my stitches are 1/8th – 1/4” long). Gather the tree strip to 12” and the trunk strip to 1” and tie off the end.

Step 4:

Trim any overhang of burlap on the frame insert and insert back into the frame.

Step 5:

Don’t stress to much over this next step. The pieces can be adjusted a bit while the glue is still wet. Lay a generous line of glue in an elongated triangle on the burlap. Begin with the center of the tree strip at the bottom center of the triangle and lay the strip along the glue line with the ends coming together at the tip of the tree. Press the ruffles into the glue. Now stand up your frame and really look at your placement and adjust if you’d like.

Step 6: if your button has a shank on the back, cut it off. Most are plastic and you can use a pair of old scissors. If you can’t get it off just use lots of glue and it’ll work. Watch the positioning as it dries.

Glue the button to the top of the tree.

Using tweezers, pick up the beads, dip in glue and place on the tree as desired. Bling it up as much or little as you’d like.

TAA DAA!! You’re done!

As you can see, I like the shabby chic look but this has been done in all sorts of colors and combinations. Also the same technique could be used to make different shapes. Wreaths were made in class. If you haven’t checked out the post from Homespun & Holly be sure and check it out. There are different color combos and wreaths pictured.

FABULOUS Homespun & Holly Event!

Sorry for the absence for the last couple months. I’m back and am committed to make this social media thing a much higher priority. It’s a challenge for me but I love reading others blogs so I need to keep up myself. I’ll catch you up in the next few days but I want to share with you what I did this weekend.

Saturday I had the privilege of teaching at the third annual Homespun and Holly event at Hollyhill Quilt Shoppe. This was my third year and it just keeps getting better and better! Jan and Brian Hill, the Mother ~ Son team that IS Hollyhill do everything BIG and it’s awesome!

I’m going to give you a little tour of the evening through pictures~

We were welcomed by a beautiful tree and “Door quilt”.

Jan and Brian welcomed everyone and had left a gift at each persons place at the tables. They told them to open and you should have heard the response!! When the packages were opened the participants found a jelly roll in their boxes! What a wonderful gift.

I walked around the room taking in the amazing set up for the event. Four designers were teaching and each had their own station to teach at.

Photographing The New Releases

Many times when I talk about Sweet Treasures I’ll often refer to “we” or “our”…… even though I’m the name of Sweet Treasures there are so many other people who help me make it all possible. There’s no way I could do it all myself. One of those people is my fabulous friend and photographer Sue Keith.

I’ve known Sue for years. She’s a “get it done” sorta gal. A few years ago when her daughter was in high school she saw a need for affordable, quality senior portraits so in true “Sue” fashion, she made it happen! She bought the equipment and taught herself photography. Well – check out her website and you’ll see ….. the rest is history (and some incredible portraiture).

We had the pleasure of taking a little trip to Victoria BC in June where we photographed some of the quilts for my newest publications. Thought you might like to see what our photo shoots for the quilts look like.

Look at the INCREDIBLE quilting by my fabulous long arm quilter Loretta Orsborn! She’s the greatest. Loretta’s another one of those people that is truly part of Sweet Treasures designs. More on her another day.

The pictures were taken at Beacon Hill Park in Victoria. It’s a beautiful sprawling park in the middle of the city. As we were walking down a path we noticed that in the grass along the path was a mama duck and nine fluffy little ducklings in two piles just sleeping away. They didn’t care one bit about us. We were much more enthralled by them. Truly they could care less that we were there! They were darling!

Sue is very serious about getting the shot.

Don’t tell anyone but she had a little kau kau on the front of her vest. Shhh

In true Victoria fashion…..

This was a learning trip for me. One of my goals for this summer is to begin REALLY learning how to take good pictures. I’ve muddled through ok but I’d really like to be better - soooo this trip was my first lesson. I bought a new camera and Sue taught me so much on our trip. One of my covers actually features a photo I took!

SYOB and Recipes!

SYOB ~ Sleep in Your Own Bed Retreat is the most popular function at the Studio. We have so much fun! 8 students get to work on any project they’d like. I’m there to help if needed, keep the snacks and meals coming ~ the support person! I love it! It’s always such a great group of ladies. If I haven’t said it before (and I’m sure I have) quilters are GREAT people!

These are paper pieced. I would have never thought to make Christmas trees in black and white but these are going to make a great wallhanging. With a little spot of red ….fabulous!

Here are a couple recipes from Saturday lunch~

Mexican Chef Salad

Throw first 5 ingredients in a large bowl~

1/4 onion chopped

1 bag of romaine hearts

3 tomatoes cut up

1 avocado

1 cup grated cheese

**********

1-lb. ground beef

1 can black beans

Brown the ground beef. Add the drained can of beans to the beef and simmer 10 minutes.

Add beef mixture and 1/2 bag of crushed Nacho Cheese Doritos to the bowl.

Pour 3/4 bottle of French Dressing over all.

Wash you hands good and then mix it all up using your hands to turn all the ingredients and mix together.

This recipe could be modified in many different ways depending on your taste. Play with it and make it your own.

Tip: This is a salad that isn’t good made ahead of time. Mix this all together just before serving.

To get a jump start on this salad I brown the beef and simmer with the beans ahead of time. Then refrigerate until I’m ready to put the salad together. Pop the beef mixture in the microwave to warm it up and in a couple minutes it’s ready to go.

You could also do the chopping ahead so all you have left to do is mix it all together.

Margaret’s Berry Trifle

6 oz. box of vanilla instant pudding

1 1/2 c. buttermilk

large tub of cool whip

pound/angel food cake (about 1 1/2 purchased pound cake loafs or 1/2 angel food cake)

1 pint assorted berries

Wash berries and allow to dry or blot gently with a paper towel.

Cube the cake into bite sized pieces.

Mix together the buttermilk and pudding mix. Stir in cool whip.

In a large straight sided glass bowl layer the three different items making sure you can see cake and berries through the side of the bowl.

Tip: Adjust this to your liking. I’m thinking peaches and blueberries will be the next try! Yum!

You could also serve this in individual goblets as pictured below. (No we don’t use crystal at the SYOB). :-)

Pound cake is the traditional cake for a trifle but angel food is good and less fat! You could also use a sugar free pudding mix, fat free cool whip and fat free buttermilk. It’s possible to make this so it’s not to sinful!

Final Market Post

Crabapple Hill always has an incredible booth. I love stitchery but don’t seem to be able to sit still long enough to stitch! I’m working on that. Lord knows I have enough patterns to keep me busy for awhile!

Bunnyhill Designs is so sweet. Anne’s new fabric line with Moda Fabrics incorporates gray with the lovely pastels she uses. I love gray with pastels so of course I was drawn to her booth. So soft and lovely.

Curby's Closet new to Quilt Market and the pattern industry. The baby shoes are to die for!! People were nuts for these precious little treasures! If you are local we will be making these in the Studio!

Cotton Way and Thimble Blossoms are a mother daughter team that design fabrics for Moda. They each have their own pattern line. I really like their fresh clean look. Their last line “Bliss” was one of my all time favorites!

Wooden Spool Designs owner Debbie Busby is one of my favorite people to see at Market! She’s a friend and designer of another one of those types of projects that I can’t sit still long enough to stitch! Wool projects of all shapes and sizes. Her projects are fabulous!

She introduced this new Block of the Month at market. Sooo cute! I’d have to do mine on a light background but I think it would be so adorable. That’s the thing with these projects. You can make them your style by playing with the color.

as you can see the wool projects make such fun seasonal accents. OK….I’ve gotta sit still long enough to make some of these sweeties! I love seasonal decorating.

Debbie wasn’t at the booth when I stopped by to take pictures :-( or she’d be in them!

Every once in awhile a quilt just jumps out and GRABS me! The one below did just that. My living room is reds and golds and this beauty would fit right in.

The beauty of cameras is….. just take a picture of the details and you’ve got all the info you need.

So below is the fabulous quilt and followed by all the info. So simple! if you feel the urge to order a kit like I’ll be doing…. all the info’s there.

At market there are awards given for best single booth and best double booth. Here’s some shots of the winners. So deserving. They were great. I wish my photography did them justice.

First place single booth ~ Crazy Old Ladies ~ Beachy and fabulous! Love those red adirondack chairs!

First place double booth ~ Sandi Henderson Designs ~ Pretty Home Dec and clothing.

Last but not least Don't Look Now. This is from a pattern designer in Australia. So AMAZING! The quilts are raw edge applique with very tight quilting in the background. So impressive!!

We ended market on a good note. Happy with the way everything went and looking forward to getting home to try and resume a little normalness (nothing’s normal before market).

Day 4 in Salt Lake City

Today was a fun day at Market! We were very busy and received great comments on our booth and patterns. It’s nice having been in the industry a few years now. People recognize the brand and seek us out to see what’s new.

I took some pictures of our booth before market started this morning. You’ll see so familiar projects and lots of new ones.

There’s a small exhibit of incredible quilts at market. Here are a few of my favorites.

This puppy quilt is soooo amazing! Most of it is done with thread. I’ve never seen anything so realistic!

Tomorrow market is from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. Then we pack up and move it all out. If I don’t get a chance to blog forgive me. I’ll be back on Monday. I have lots more to show you!

Day 3 in Salt Lake City

Opening Day! We had a great day visiting with shop owners, giving them ideas and sharing stories. Quilters are fabulous people. Those we visited with seemed to like our new patterns and that always makes me feel good.

Here’s a couple shots of the show floor from above. This will give you a little idea of the magnitude of this show!

I didn’t get out of our booth much today but here’s a few shots of some pretty impressive booths we saw on our way out this evening.

First up Jillily Studios. She’s from Utah which definitely makes it easier to go ALL OUT. You don’t have to ship everything. So Adorable! She has a new fabric line out so she got really creative displaying the different prints in her “Soda Shop”.

Next is Patchwork with Busy fingers from Australia. What a lovely booth and I adore their projects! Their specialty is English Paper Piecing. I love their look. Wish I liked to sit still long enough to hand piece like that. I did see a little project I liked so much I might just give it a try! (I’ll try and get a pic).

The fabric companies always do beautiful/fun displays for their customers to enjoy. Here’s Art Gallery’s booth.

Here’s a Maywood Studios display that I especially liked! :-)

The two quilts hanging at angles on each side of the display are new patterns of mine. I love the little pieced cabin quilt that’s down low on the left. Soooo cute!

This is a new line from Maywood Studio’s called “Fresh Fallen Snow”. It’s supposed to hit stores June or July. Here at Sweet Treasures we will be doing up kits in some of our new patterns in this snowy fabric!

The little hexagon “Centerpiece Tablemat” is also a new pattern of mine.

Day 2 in Salt Lake City

Day 2 is a L-O-N-G day! We continue/finish setting up our booths and in the evening Market official begins with “Sample Spree”.

Here are what the isles look like as we try to maneuver and set up. The larger companies ship there booths in huge crates that make getting around a little tough for awhile.

Sample Spree is 2 hours of insanity!! Women shoppers at……well I hate to say it but – their worse. Lets say….very enthusiastic shoppers. Sorry not everybody but it is a bit crazy!

Sample Spree is where the vendors can sell samples, discounted patterns, fabrics …… We had samples of our smaller projects with a dozen patterns for the shop owners to take back to their stores. Samples sell product so they love to get samples.

It’s 2 hours of intense shopping.

They line up hours ahead of time to be the first in!

My favorite long arm quilter Loretta got to come to Market and she helped out in our booth. Here she is hauling our pumpkin samples to Sample Spree.

The Moda booth always creates a stir. It is a very large rectangle of tables with the employees in the center and fat quarter bundles stacked about 3 feet high solid on the tables. This is where a lot of the shoppers head to get the latest fabrics from moda as soon as the doors open. They literally RUN!

They are often 6 people deep solid around the outside of the tables all trying to reach in and grab the fabrics they are after. It’s a MOB!

At Market men become the bag holders!

Tired and happy shoppers checking out their purchases. My sister Brenda said it looks like Halloween when we’d sit on the floor, spread out our candy and trade. Good memories! I’m sure these ladies will make some good memories this weekend.

At 10:00 pm we all pack up our tables and take things back to our booth and then back to the hotel to get a little shut eye so we can be bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning when the full market opens!

Day 1 in Salt Lake City

We had a long day traveling yesterday. 14 hours from Keizer Oregon to Salt Lake City Utah. We were full to the brim!

When we were unloading the car this was in the parking lot. How fun is that?

This is the view from our parking garage. Wow! Salt Lake City is surrounded by beautiful snow covered mountains.

So I got so consumed with getting set up I forgot to take a “before” picture of our booth.

I have been afflicted with what I refer to as “Market Brain” lately. Forgive me. I’ll have much better pictures for you from here on out.

I’ll be naughty and end with my dessert at dinner tonight. Don’t worry. I split it with my sister. It was FABULOUS!

Chocolate Truffle Cake with strawberries and ice cream. Mmm mmm mmmm.

Happy Mothers Day to all the MOM’S out there!

This is my most FABULOUS mom! She is one of my favorite people in the whole wide world! She’s the constant in my life. Always there for me. Loving me and praying for me.

~I love you mom with all my heart~

No matter what your "mom” situation is today I’m sure there’s some mom out there that you can hug and give a word of encouragement to. Support her in some way. Mom’s have the most important job there is.

Here’s another very special mom to me ~

My daughter (by marriage to my son) not my daughter-in-law. She is my daughter! She’s an AMAZING mommy to my first grandbaby. I could not have picked a better mommy for Sam. I love her to pieces!
