Answers to questions I've received.

Q: How can I download a copy of the poster so I can hang it at my office (your technology baffles me)?

A: If you click through to "all sizes" there is a link that says something like "download photograph." Before you do, however, wait, as I need to fix the times. Our show is @ 1430 on Sunday; I believe I have the wrong time on the poster.

Q: If I do grab some more people, how can I get other tickets?

A: Let Heidi or me know you need more tickets, and we'll get them to you.

[cism-tems] CISM TEAM: TICKETS TO COMMUNITY PLAY PRODUCTION TO BENEFIT TEAM

Team,

We're back on for selling tickets. To review, there are 150 tickets
and they have a face value of $8. We keep 100% of what we sell.
That's $1,200, if I've done my math right.

The production is "Over the River and Through the Woods" by Joe
DiPietro. Here's a summary I found online written by Mark S. P.
Turvin: "Nick is the last of the younger set not having fled from the
controlling influences of his grandparents Frank , Aida , Nunzio, and
eternally house coat-clad Emma. When Nick receives a promotion that
will send him to the other side of the continent, the four come up
with a plan to keep him around by setting him up with the sweet
Caitlin O'Hare without telling him during one of their Sunday
dinners."

My wife tells me it's really about food. She said it's about family
(Italian families, actually) and food. She asked me to make a poster,
and from what she told me, this is what I came up with:

We're selling the matinee on Sunday, the 8th of March. The production
is at Monumental United Methodist Church on Dinwiddie Street (at Queen
Street) in Olde Towne Portsmouth. That's Dinwiddie between High and
London. Parking is actually in a lot behind the restored former school

Yes, we;'re selling tickets for Sunday, March 8th, and, yes, that
means we have just four weeks to sell all the tickets.

I figure if we make it a meeting, and everybody buys two tickets and
comes with their significant other or a friend, then we've sold 110
tickets right away. Okay, so maybe you don't want to by tickets
yourself. Hawk them to your friends, family, and co-workers. I've
already convinced my boss to buy a pair... okay, that wasn't so hard
as he's on the board of the Council; if I can get the admin assistant
to buy a pair then I'm really doing well.

But seriously, what a great opportunity. They put on the play, and we
benefit from the ticket sales. That's, well, a win for these
community thespians and a win for us. There are five other
non-profits selling tickets; one organization for each performance.

To help us get this moving quickly, I've created a form for you to
fill out to tell us how many tickets you want to sell and how you want
to connect with those tickets. Go to

tickets on Monday or Tuesday.

Thank you for your help. With the state's dire budget situation, I'm
not sure we'll receive a grant this year, and the money from this

coffers for the fiscal year starting this June.

the conversation for us to think about. While the focus was on veterans
and post-traumatic stress, much of the discussion is applicable to our

[cism-tems] CISM Conference shifts to State EMS Symposium

TEMS CISM Team: Next year's CISM conference typically held in Virginia Beach in the late spring will not be held; however, a dedicated CISM track is being added to the statewide EMS symposium held in Norfolk in November 2009. At this time topic and speaker suggestions are requested from the CISM community for this track. This is your opportunity to impact the newly added CISM track and to identify relevant and interesting topics. Please forward any and all ideas for the November 2009 CISM track at the Virginia EMS Symposium to Laura Walker walker@vaems.org who will pass them along to the track leader (Laura is our regional representative to the EMS symposium program committee). The deadline for input is coming up fast...you need to provide this input by November 3 (same day as our next CISM team meeting). Yes, planning for next year's conference is well underway and topics are decided almost a year in advance.

In his previous email Peter mentioned the idea that our team may have opportunities to fill gaps created by an absent state CISM conference. This may be true, and the team will certainly want to explore such ideas. Greetings, all...

I hope this turn into autumn finds you well and that you will join me in re-engaging with the CISM team. We've had a somewhat slow couple of months, but things are now picking up. As such, we must all rededicate ourselves to this important work.

QUARTERLY TEAM MEETING

Our next team meeting is set for Monday, November 3rd, 5:30pm, at the TEMS offices. Heidi will be ensuring we have a light dinner available for us all. If you will be unable to attend, please let Heidi know as soon as possible. This is the Monday before election day.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE

Last night, Diane, Heidi, and I had the opportunity to interview two new team members. One of those new members is Dr. Benjamin Keyes, a professor at Regent University and the director of the Center for Trauma Studies at the university. The Center for Trauma Studies is affiliated with the Figley Institute and Green Cross. While the intervention models taught by the Figley Insitute and Green Cross are not exactly the same at the models and interventions taught by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, they are certainly in synch and extremely worthwhile.

The Center for Trauma Studies is offering several Green Cross courses over the next few weeks, and as members of the CISM team, I urge you to consider these for your continuing education and professional development. The information and skills aligns well with the ICISF-model, and these can do nothing but help you serve better.

Here are the courses, all of which provide some or all of specific training requirements for various Green Cross qualifications:

* Compassion Stress Management. 10/25, 0830-1700.

* Treating Traumatized Families. 10/31, 0830-1700.

* Compassion Fatigue Therapist. 11/1, 0830-1700

* Disaster Stress and Trauma, 11/21 & 11/22, 0830-1700

This additional course is for people interested in being a part of the Center's First Response Trauma Team:

* Trauma Training: Orientation to Global Aid Network and Orientation to Operation Blessing.

There is a tuition charge for these courses; for additional information, including contact information to register, see http://www.regent.edu/acad/schcou/trauma/training.html.

ADDITIONAL BITS

With the current budget crunch with the state government, we can expect to see some changes in the state's oversight of the CISM program for the Commonwealth. I suspect we will see some staff changes and, perhaps, some cut-backs in funding and programs, but we are to be assured this initiative is still important and still vital. Budget constraints at the state level will not impact the delivery of our services, at least in a negative way. As a matter of fact, these constraints may actually provide us with some opportunities to expand our own offerings. For instance, as we have discussed previously, if the state does not continue with the state CISM conference in 2009, we might step up to fill the gap. We will talk more about this at the team meeting on November 3rd, so bring your ideas and enthusiasm. This serves as a reminder regarding the status of all incident reports. If you could check and make sure all reports have been submitted to me I would greatly appreciate it. A quarterly report is due to the State Office of EMS by the end of the month and I want to make sure that I am up to date on anything that may be outstanding.

Hello Heidi
I do get all the CISM email stuff and smile every time. As you may know I retired from Rescue 5 a few months ago, it was very hard to do so, Dave Coulling was a great help, I loved running rescue with him. It is will great sorrow that I have to also retire from CISM, my job is very demanding and takes all my time.
I have years of great memories and friendships. I have been using stress management techniques from CISM for years in my counseling with my clients from the Court. My past experiences as a team member will always be in my heart, it's a very effective tool and as a long time friend of many Fire & EMS providers who used CISM, I have seen a difference in their lives. Please pass on to the team my pleasure at having been a part of them for all these years, keep up the good work.

Tidewater CISM Team:

I wanted to pass along a couple of items for your information -

The team was honored as a recipient of $3050 contributed by the Continuing Concepts in Prehospital Emergency Medicine Conference in Suffolk held recently. The contribution was developed from a silent auction held during the conference as well as from income by event contributors and registrants. Another $3050 was contributed to the National EMS Memorial via sponsorship of a bike rider, EMS humorist and conference key note speaker Steve Berry from NY to Roanoke during National EMS Week. Several of our CISM team members donated items for the silent auction which very much helped make the auction such a success. Several other team members assisted at the conference at the registration table. Another was a speaker. Several others were conference attendees. Overall, a really strong showing from CISM, and a really good result for CISM. Thanks to everyone who helped.

The result of the contribution means we now have some funds to assist members with their CISM education. At the team meeting this week it was decided to make funding available to help pay for member registration to the state CISM training conference later this month. We ask that you first try to get your employer or organization to fund your expenses for the conference. But if you still need assistance, please send an email to Heidi Hilchey hilchey@vaems.org with your specific request. The request will be quickly reviewed by a committee of Peter, Heidi, Diane and me. To receive the funding, you'll then need to present a paid receipt for the registration. We'd prefer to pay it after you've attended the conference, but if you need the funding sooner, that's ok. (If you don't show up for the conference you'll owe it back.) June 7, 9:00 am - noon Free team inservice at Tidewater EMS with two topics: Mock debriefing/role play scenario and Compassion Fatique. Let Heidi know if you plan to attend so we can plan coffee, pastries, etc.

June 23 - 24 Advanced Group Crisis Intervention at the Hampton Fire Training Center, Hampton. Sherry Todd, Instructor. Call 727-1094 to register by June 2. $50.00 Check payable to City of Hampton.

Summer, TBA Basic Group Crisis Intervention at Norfolk Naval Base. Roosevelt Brown, Instructor. No cost. More details to be provided later.

Eastern Shore CISM team meeting May 13 at Northampton County EMS office in Machipongo.

Next Tidewater Team meeting: August 5 is our annual awards dinner at Tidewater EMS in Norfolk.

Virginia EMS Symposium November 12-16 in Norfolk. We will be seeking members to staff the state CISM display. More on this later.

Two other news items:

Wendy Rubbo will donate $5.00 to the team for each stained glass Star of Life symbol sold. Thanks Wendy...and more on how to purchase and how to sell these will be forthcoming.

Congratulations to our own Heidi Hilchey. She wasn't at our team meeting this week because she was in Washington receiving the American Ambulance Association's Star of Life Award. She was one of 108 recipients worldwide, and in her case, for Outstanding Contributions to Medical Transport. Heidi's "real" job, in case you weren't aware, is working as a Paramedic with Medical Transport, LLC. In addition to receiving the award, she spent several days in Washington meeting members of Congress and educating them on issues related to EMS. Thanks and congratulations, Heidi!!

Hello Heidi

I do get all the CISM email stuff and smile every time. As you may know I retired from Rescue 5 a few months ago, it was very hard to do so, Dave Coulling was a great help, I loved running rescue with him. It is will great sorrow that I have to also retire from CISM, my job is very demanding and takes all my time.

I have years of great memories and friendships. I have been using stress management techniques from CISM for years in my counseling with my clients from the Court. My past experiences as a team member will always be in my heart, it’s a very effective tool and as a long time friend of many Fire & EMS providers who used CISM, I have seen a difference in their lives. Please pass on to the team my pleasure at having been a part of them for all these years, keep up the good work.
