Spring Day

I sit here looking out my frontroom window at Discovery Passage. The passage is quiet today. There are no tugs, no fishboats, no water taxis to be seen.

We, me, my guy and my dog, were going to go for a hike earlier today. Circumstance got in the way and our outing ended up being a hurried drive to the other side of the island(about six miles), and a five minute walk on the beach.

I sit here now, looking outside. The sun just popped out. It seems sacriligous to waste this gorgeous afternoon inside. I could go for my own walk but I allowed the spring to leave my step.

A perfect segue into my next thought, that Spring seems a long time coming this year. Grass, leaves and blooms are starting to emerge but seem reluctant to do so.

I can't say as I blame them. Our weather patterns are haphazard and unpredictable. I moved to the gulf islands around the end of the eighties. I remember going out into my yard on New Year's Day and seeing a rose blooming!

January 1st and I had a rose growing in my yard.

In this new century, climate change appears to be advancing rapidly on us. There are many things I do not understand going on.

All one can really do is hang on to their sanity and go along for the ride.

There are so many things changing in our world.

There are catastrophic events like the recent earthquake in Japan and the subsequent radiation leaks from damaged reactors. Add the conflicts in Libya and many other nations, chuck in the upcoming Royal wedding and we have a plethora of events, randomly covered by the media, to make out heads spin like Carrie's in the Exorcist.

Just another day in Paradise.

So far, I have written on how to bake yummy baking powder biscuits, how to love your dog, sew a medicine bag, and a handful of other topics.

I spend lots of time online and I am working hard to start generating an income from my online endeavors. I think eHow will afford me the opportunity to generate a modest income is I am persistant and focused with my approach.

Tunes on a Sunday Morning

I was doing some Spring cleaning a couple of days ago. Although I don't think I have a problem nearly as severe as some people I have seen on the show Hoarders, I have a tendency to hang on to useless clutter because of memories attached.

I was being disciplined on this day of cleaning, lightening the load. As well as tossing actual junk, old bills, empty boxes, and CD cases, I was throwing out old birthday cards, letters and journals that documented some of my personal history.

As the day wore on I became less and less discerning. I simply wanted to get to the end of the chore and enjoy the results of my labors.

As I was working away I came across an empty Zaca Creek CD case. Zaca Creek is a relatively unknown band that put out 2 CD's in the late 1980's then drifted back into obscurity. I became quite attached to the tunes on that CD during that time in my life. Each song on the Zaca Creek CD came to have a special meaning to me.

When I found the Zaca Creek CD case during my cleaning frenzy, I revisited many of those memories, marveling at my recall. I also remembered my head space at that time and realised just how much I have emotionally grown since those turbulent years.

Regardless of the dysfunction, it was a wild and crazy time, I also carry fond and loving memories. It is good to recognise it wasn't all negative. So, when I came across the CD case, I took a little trip down memory lane, wished I hadn't lost the CD, tossed the case and carried on with my cleaning, all the while reminiscing about the past.

About four or so hours later I was delighting over the fact I could see the light at the end of my de-cluttering day. I was going through one last tote. I tossed more than I kept as I was tired and ready to be done with the chore. I picked up an old journal that was bound closed with elastic. I handled the book for awhile, remembering I had eventually used it for writing down to-do and grocery lists, nothing of any great importance. I decided to flip it open and take a look anyway, before I deep-sixed it.

I loosened the elastic and cracked it open and out fell the Zaca Creek CD! I was surprised and delighted to see the CD. It felt like I had run into an old friend. I turned it over to look at the condition of it. It was pretty beaten up and scratched. I kept it anyway. I remembered, way back in the day, how difficult it was to find that CD when I wanted to purchase a copy.

This Sunday morning, as I sat here deciding what to write in my Blog, I popped Zaca Creek into my computer's CD drive and lo and behold, the complete CD played with not one scratch marring the tunes.

It was a revelation to me, that regardless of how scratched and beaten up we appear on the outside as time travels on and we age, inside we are the same vibrant humans we have always been. It is an epiphany to realise that our spirits remain true regardless of how used up and worn out and wrinkled our skin bag becomes, as we journey through our stint on this Planet.

Lord, I just want to say THANK YOU, Because this morning I woke up and knew where my children were.

Because this morning my home was still standing,
Because this morning I am not crying
Because my spouse, my child, my brother or sister, my parent does not need to be buried
or to be pulled out from underneath a pile of concrete,
Because this morning I was able to drink a glass of water,
Because this morning I was able to turn on the light,
Because this morning I was able to take a shower,
Because this morning I was not planning a funeral,

But most of all I thank you this morning because I still have life and a voice to cry out for the people of Japan.
Lord I cry out to you, the One that makes the impossible, possible,
The One that turns darkness in to light,
I cry out that You give those mothers strength,

That You give them peace that surpasses all understanding,
That You may open the streets so that help can come,
That You may provide doctors, nurses, food, water, and all that they need in a blink of an eye.

For all those that have lost family members, give them peace, give them hope, give them courage to continue to go on!
Protect the children and shield them with your power.
I pray all this in the name of Jesus!!!

To all friends, please continue to forward this so that we can pray together for the people in Japan.

Traveling into the Unknown

I admire anyone that has the resources and courage to travel our Planet in these frightening times.

There are so many catastrophic events happening.

Each morning when I turn on the TV I tune in a news channel. I am greeted with a media blitz of more death, destruction, war, earthquake, child, woman, animal abuses and atrocities.

South America

My 21 year old nephew Eric is currently traveling in South America. A young woman named Alina, is accompanying him on his adventures. She is writing a travel blog .

I am enjoying their experiences vicariously, reading the blog every time she updates it.

On her most current post she talks about she and Eric both getting tattoos, it is her first so she was a bit nervous.

She says she and Eric were very sad to see animals in the zoo in Beunos Aires.

She writes that most of the animals are alone in their dirty cages, staring out at the tourists taking pictures of them. I am sickened and saddened to hear of this.

She balances the sad by talking about and the beauty of Beunos Aries, the green surroundings, the lush gardens and the many outdoor markets.

I envy youth the ability to see the bigger picture. To be able to go to the other side of the Planet to see and experience something I will likely only ever read about.

I find that I feel safest in my own little corner of the Universe, here on Quadra Island. I feel like I am living in the best place on the Planet.

Our weather is a bit skewed lately. Winter is dragging it's heels, not ready to leave us alone yet. If that is the biggest problem I have to deal with then I am blessed.

I am wise enough to know that the peace and security I feel here is simply home grown.

I understand we could be hit with a catastrophic geological or environmental event, or perhaps evil on a smaller scale, such as robbery, mugging, an accident, at any time.

I prefer to keep the illusion that all is well, that we are untouchable. That we are safe from harm from any direction.

It's crazy that I feel as though I am tempting fate simply writing these words.
