The Xx "Chained"

El día Xx se acerca y, cuánto más cerca está, más canciones podemos ir escuchando. Han estrenado varias canciones en directo, pero no hay pruebas con suficiente calidad. De momento, "Angels" y éste "Chained", son los lanzamientos oficiales que el grupo ha querido hacer, y tanto como la primera como la segunda, siguen el camino del debut del grupo. Sin embargo, "Chained" es más corta y más "ligera", por así decirlo.

The Xx day is coming and, the closer is, more songs we can listen. They have played some new songs in concert, but there isn't proof with enough quality. By the moment, "Angels" and this "Chained" are the official releases that the band wanted to do, and the first and the second one follow the way of the debut album of the band. However, "Chained" is shorter and "lighter", as a way of saying it.

Dragonette "Live In This City"

Ese sonido tan personal de Dragonette vuelve a repetirse en "Live In This City". Es el segundo single extraído desde "Bodyparts", el tercer disco (disponible en septiembre) de estos canadienses que han ido ascendiendo en popularidad desde que Martin Solveig decidió utilizar a Martina para poner voz a varias canciones de "Smash", el último disco del DJ francés. Hay que reconocer que, a pesar de mantener la esencia Dragonette, parece que el próximo disco será mucho más comercial.

That so personal sound of Dragonette is repeating again in "Live In This City". It's the second single extracted from "Bodyparts", the third album (available in September) of the Canadian band that were rising in popularitys since Martin Solveig wanted to use Martina's voice in some of the songs of "Smash", the last album of the French DJ. No Doubt "Settle Down (Major Lazer Remix)"

Seguro que No Doubt no se esperaba el recibimiento que están teniendo con "Settle Down", quizá, el regreso que, después de haber escuchado el primer single, más ganas se tiene de escuchar el disco entero. Major Lazer (o lo que es lo mismo, Diplo y Switch) han puesto la oreja a la canción y le han añadido su espíritu, dejando esta maravilla de remix que haría que lo diésemos todo en una fiesta.

I'm sure that No Doubt didn't expect the reception is having "Settle Down", maybe, the comeback that, after listening the first single, more desire has the people to listen the whole album. Major Lazer (or what is the same, Diplo and Switch), put the ear on it and they added to the song their spirit, leaving this wonderful remix that would make us give everything in a party.

Damian Marley (uno de los hijos del ultraconocido Bob Marley), Tarrus Riley, TOK y Wayne Marshall se han reunido y compuesto este "Independence", canción tributo a los 50 años de independencia de Jamaica, país del cuál son originarios todos ellos. Mezcla muchos sonidos, pero el género que más evidente se nota su influencia es el reggae, género que ha marcado y sigue marcando al país.

Damian Marley (one of the sons of the ultrafamous Bob Marley), Tarrus Riley, TOK and Wayne Marshall met and composed this "Independence", tribute song to the 50 years of independence of Jamaica, country from where all of them are. It mixes a lot of sounds, but the most evident sound from where the influence comes is reggae, genre that marked and keeps marking the country.

No es el videoclip oficial de la canción, sino un vídeo que ha subido para promocionar en un primer momento a la nueva "All Night Longer". Con raíces más raperas, Sammy Adams se está empezando a encaminar por el pop y el sonido más comercial y, si sigue por este camino, le va a salir genial porque este "All Night Longer" es mejor que cualquier canción anterior.

It isn't the official music video of the song, but it's a video that he has uploaded for promote inicially the new wong "All Night Longer". With rap roots, Sammy Adams is beginning to get the way of the pop and a more mainstream sound and, if he follows this track, it's going to be great because this "All Night Longer" is better than any previous song of him.

Jhameel, ese gran desconocido para el gran público pero conocidísimo de este blog, ha estrenado el videoclip para "A Maiden Calling", otra de tantas buenas canciones que ha presentado ("Shut Up", "White Lie" o "Shadow Of A Man"), esta vez, más tranquila, pero siendo evidente ese estilo tan personal que tiene. Si por mi fuera, este hombre ya tendría un contrato para, al menos, cinco discos, porque parece que creatividad le sobra.

Jhameel, that big stranger for the big public but very known in this blog, has premiered the music video for "A Maiden Calling", another one of those great songs he has presented ("Shut Up", "White Lie" or "Shadow Of A Man"), this time, more quiet, but being evident that personal style he has. If it was for me, this man would already has a hire for, at least, five albums, because he seems to has so much creativity.

Guilty Pleasures: Calle 13

Ya son 1400 las entradas escritas en este blog y, por tanto, toca cumplir mi parte al escribir acerca de uno de mis guilty pleasures (placeres culpables).

It's already 1400 posts written in this blog and, so, I have to fulfill my part writing about one of my guilty pleasures.

CALLE 13

"Pa'l Norte (feat. Orishas)"

Calle 13 es la propuesta centroamericana más interesante desde mi punto de vista. Han conseguido mezclar reggaetón, cumbia, rock y pop acercándose al gran publico a la vez que conquistaban a la crítica con temas políticos, sociales y, sobre todo, inteligentes. En algunas ocasiones aparentaban hacer un estilo de letras muy ordinario y vulgar, pero nada más lejos de la realidad, cuándo esconde un tratamiento de la sociedad más cercano y personal que la mayor parte de las letras actuales. Otra característica de Calle 13 son los elaborados videoclips que estrenan para cada single, incluyendo en este post algunos de ellos.

Han recogido muchísimos premios, entre otros, Grammy o Festival Internacional de la Canción Viña del Mar (en varias ocasiones), y han conseguido incrustar su canción "No hay nadie como tú" en la publicidad corporativa del diario nacional español "El País", aumentando su popularidad en este país.

Es un grupo que no se conforma con transmitir su filosofía y pensamiento a través de la música, sino que no tienen ningún problema para enfrentarse a líderes políticos a través de la palabra como ya ha ocurrido en varias ocasiones. Todo eso hace a Calle 13 un grupo a tener muy en cuenta.

Calle 13 is the most interesting Centro-American proposal from my point of view. They have achieved to mix reggaetón, cumbia, rock y pop getting closer to the big public at the same time they were conquering the critics with politic, social and, specially, smart topics. Sometimes, they appeared to be treating lyrics too much rude and vulgar, but that's far from reality, it hides a closer and more personal treating of the society than actual lyrics. Another characteristic of Calle 13 is the elaborated music videos they premiere for each single they launch, including in this post some of them.

They have earned a lot of awards, some of them, from the Grammy Awards or the International Song Festival Viña del Mar (in more than one occasion), and they achieved to put their song "No hay nadie como tú" in the corporative advertisement of the Spanish national newspaper "El País", making grow their popularity in this country.

It's a band that doesn't get satisfied with passing on their philosophy and way of thinking beyond the music, but thye don't have problem to face politic leaders with their words like already happened in some occasions. All that makes of Calle 13 a band to bear them in mind.

Amelia Lily "You Bring Me Joy" (Music Video)

La sorpresa que ha supuesto Amelia Lily es mayúscula, superando a sus compañeras de edición en X Factor UK Little Mix. "You Bring Me Joy" puede pecar de repetitiva, pero es genial, también puede no ser la canción más adecuada para aprovechar el talento de Amelia, pero sigue siendo buenísima. Tanto que se ha colado en el cuarto puesto de la lista de lo mejor de Julio. Ahora queda disfrutar del videoclip hasta que llegue el siguiente single.

The surprise of Amelia Lily is enormous, walking over her edition partners on X Factor UK Little Mix. "You Bring Me Joy" can sin of repetitive, but is genius, can't be the rightest song to make the most of her talent, but it keeps being excellent. So much good is that has slip in the top of the best songs of July. Now we have to enjoy it until she launches the next single.

Nicki Minaj "Pound The Alarm" (Music Video)

Es muy raro lo que está sucediendo con los singles que está sacando Nicki Minaj, porque son muy directos (también se acepta facilón) y muy efectivos a la hora de hacer mover al personal, incluso enganchan mucho, pero no consiguen el ansiado número 1 en Estados Unidos, el país dónde más éxito tiene. El caso es que para promocionarse durante el verano ha elegido "Pound The Alarm" que tiene la básica estructura de las canciones actuales, y para el vídeo ha vestido de Carnaval a su isla, Trinidad.

It's really strange what is happening with the singles Nicki Minaj is launching, because they are very direct (also accepted dead easy) and very effective making move the people, even they are addictive, but they aren't achieving the wanted number 1 in United States, the country where she has more success. The thing is that for promotion in the rest of this Summer, she has chosen "Pound The Alarm" that has the basic structure of the actual songs, and for the video has disguised her island, Trinidad, onto carnival.

Sigur Rós "Varúð" (Music Video)

Por segunda vez, "Varúð" se convierte en videoclip para el Mistery Film Experiment y, además, a lo grande, porque, de momento, es uno de los videoclips más ensalzados de lo que llevan de proyecto. La cosa es que no es difícil realizar un vídeo de ocho minutos en el que, enseñando prácticamente lo mismo, se comunique algo tan personal como es el amor a una ciudad, en este caso, Nueva York.

This is the second time that "Varúð" becomes in a music video for the Mistery Film Experimet and, besides, in style, because, by the moment, is one of the most extolled music videos from the videos premiered. The thing is how much hard is to make a eight-minute-long video where, showing practically the same, comunicate something so personal like the love to a city, in this case, New York.

Passion Pit "Constant Conversations" (Music Video)

Passion Pit han vuelto a conquistar a la sociedad con "Gossamer", el segundo disco que los ha alzado hasta algún lugar dónde se codean con los grandes. Imagino que este tercer single lo han lanzado debido a las cancelaciones de los conciertos que, por fuerza mayor, han tenido que realizar (la bipolaridad de Michael Angelakos tiene que ser tratada). Mientras vuelvan con las mismas ganas y eso no perjudique a nadie, los fans esperamos lo que sea.

Passion Pit has conquered again the society with "Gossamer", the second album that has launched them to someplace where they are rubbing shoulder with the greatest. I imagine that this third single has been launched due to the cancellations of the tour, owing to things out of their control (the bipolar disease Michael Angelakos suffers has to be treated). If they comeback with the same strength and that doesn't causes anything to nobody, we, the fans, will be waiting anything.

Felix Cartal "Higher (feat. New Ivory)" (Music Video)

Esta canción apareció en una de las listas de mejores canciones de principios de año y, a día de hoy, me sigue pareciendo igual de genial que el primer día y, varios meses después, estrena un videoclip que, según palabras del propio director, representa "nuestra rabia interna que se manifiesta insanamente". Tiene un final bastante radical, pero hasta llegar a ese punto, el videoclip ya ha volado.

This song appeared in one of the tops of best songs from this early year and, nowadays, I keep thinking that's still great like the first day and, a few months later, premieres the music video that, based on the director comments, represents "our anger manifests in unhealthy ways". It has a very radical final, but until that moment, the music video has already vanished.

Example "Say Nothing"

Example siempre me ha gustado, aunque este "Say Nothing" es un paso atrás en su carrera a mi modo de ver. Se pasa a un sonido más pop dejando más de lado el dance y la electrónica, aunque todavía quedan secuelas de su mejor época. Su última colaboración con Calvin Harris sobrepasa demasiado a esta canción que parece un intento a acercarse mejor a las radios y listas de todo el mundo.

I always liked Example, but this "Say Nothing" is a step back in his career from my point of view. He goes into a more pop sound leaving aside the dance and electronics, although those sounds are still present as consequences of that era. His last collaboration with Calvin Harris overpass too much this song that seems a try-out of go closer to the radios and the charts of every part of the globe.

Arctic Monkeys "Come Together (The Beatles cover)"

Para la presentación de los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres de este año, Arctic Monkeys hicieron una aparición estelar tocando el "Come Together" de The Beatles, canción que encaja perfectamente en la estética de todo el acto y, concretamente, con la escena en la cuál ellos aparecieron. No han hecho grandes cambios a la canción, pero aportaron un poco de su estilo a una canción que jamás pasará de moda.

For the London Olympic Games Opening of this year, Arctic Monkeys made a stellar appearance playing The Beatles' "Come Together", song that fits perfectly with the aesthetics of the whole event and, concretely, with the scene made with them included. They haven't made a lots of changes to the song, but they contributed with a little of their style to a song that never will be out of fashion.

Scissor Sisters "Let's Have A Kiki" (Music Video)

Presentado como un vídeo instructivo en el que se explica algo, en realidad es el videoclip de esta extraña canción con una introducción de más de un minuto pero que, a partir de ahí, se convierte en una canción tremendamente pegadiza. Lo que cuentan básicamente en el vídeo (y en la propia letra de la canción) es lo que significa "kiki", pero que lo que es una fiesta en Estados Unidos, en los países hispanohablantes no pensamos precisamente en eso.

Presentes as a instructional video where it's something explained, actually is the music video of this weird song with an intro of more than a minute but, since there, becomes in a tremendously catchy song. What they basically tell in the video (and in the same lyrics of the song) is what "kiki" means, but what is a party in the United States, in the Spanish-speaking countries we don't think in that exactly.

Para variar, The Veronicas también beben del dubstep para hacer una canción pop muy continuísta a lo último que pudimos escuchar de ellas, aquel fantástico "Hook Me Up" que nos dio temazos como "Untouched" o la canción que da título al disco. "Lolita" abre muy bien lo que no promete nada nuevo en el estilo de las gemelas, pero que nos deja con la miel en los labios queriendo escuchar el resto del disco.

As lately usual, The Veronicas drink from dubstep to make a pop song very sound-keeping to what they sound in their last album, that fantastic "Hook Me Up" that gave us hits like "Untouched" or the song that gave the name to the album. "Lolita" opens very good what is a promise of nothing new in the style of this twins, but leave us enough good flavor to make us want to listen the whole album.

Todos conocemos a P!nk y sabemos que, a la hora de hacer videoclips, hace lo que ella quiere y, por ello, en parte ella se diferencia de todas las "popstars" femeninas. El de "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" tiene una estética de película que hace que sea uno de los mejores videoclips del mainstream musical de lo que llevamos de año.

Por otra parte, también se ha presentado la cara B del single. Ésta se llama "The King Is Dead But The Queen Is Alive" lo que parece que hace clara referencia a Madonna, pero imagino que ya se pronunciará P!nk.

We all know P!nk and we know that, making music videos, she does whatever she wants and, for that, she's different, partly, to every female "popstar". The "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" video has a cinema aesthetics that make it one of the best music videos from the music mainstream of this 2012.

In other hand, has been also presented the B-side of the single. This is called "The King Is Dead But The Queen Is Alive" what seems to be referentiating Madonna, but I imagine that P!nk will talk about this.

Cheryl "Under The Sun" (Music Video)

Me ha costado dos singles darme cuenta de que Cheryl Cole ahora quiere ser llamada solo Cheryl. Cierto es que es más corto y, por lo tanto, más recordable, pero para mí va a ser siempre Cheryl Cole. "Under The Sun" es el segundo single desde su tercer disco en solitario y, al menos en mi caso, el single más inmediato, ya que a mí me gustó desde la primera vez que escuché aquel primer trozo de la canción.

It has taken me two singles to realize that Cheryl Cole wants to be called only Cheryl. It's true that is shorter and, by the way, easier to remember, but for me she's going to be always Cheryl Cole. "Under The Sun" is the second single from her third solo album and, at least for me, the most immediate single, because I liked it since the first time I listened to that first piece of the song.

The Killers "Runaways" (Music Video)

El primer single de "Battleborn" está creando muchas expectativas aunque las críticas se dividan entre aumentarlas o hundirlas, pero creo que los fans estarán de acuerdo conmigo unánimemente en que "Runaways" es el puro sonido The Killers. El videoclip, como en la línea de sus videoclips, da el absoluto protagonismo a Brandon Flowers, restando mucha calidad a lo que podría haber sido una gran combinación videoclip-canción.

The first single from "Battleborn" is creating so much expectations although the critics are divided between getting them higher or lower, but I think the fans will agree with me unanimously that "Runaways" is the pure sound of The Killers. The music video, like in their music video style, gives the absolut starring to Brandon Flowers, taking away a lot of quality to what would have been a big combination between music video and song.

Little Mix "Wings" (Music Video)

Son mi sorpresa de la última edición del Factor X británico y digo mi sorpresa porque no me terminaron de gustar a pesar de que ganaran, pero lo que me he encontrado tras aquella victoria ha sido muy bueno. "Wings" puede ser un auténtico éxito mundial con la promoción adecuada gracias a la energía que transmite, las cuatro buenas voces que tienen y la melodía hiperpegadiza.

They are my surprise from the last edition of X Factor UK and I say my surprise because I didn't really like them in spite of their winning, but what I've found after that victory is very good. "Wings" can a be a true global hit with the correct promotion thanks to the energy it flows, the excellent four voices they have and the hypercatchy melody.

Jennifer López "Goin' In (feat. Flo Rida)" (Music Video)

Pasando de una producción bastante modesta a otra mucho más elaborada (quizá tanto que puede superar en calidad a la película de la cuál es banda sonora). Jennifer López se entrega a Flo Rida para hacer este temazo que representa a "Step Up: Revolution", la película de las coreografías imposibles y que puede deducirse al ver el videoclip. La parte de Flo Rida en el videoclip no puede ser más ridícula.

From a very modest production to another much more elaborated (maybe can overcome the quality of the movie from its soundtrack goes out this). Jennifer López deliveries herself to Flo Rida to make this hit that represents to "Step Up: Revolution", the movie of the impossible choreographies, what you can deduce watching the music video. The Flo Rida part in the music video can't be worst.

Travis Garland "Settle Down (No Doubt cover)"

Con una producción bastante más modesta, llega la primera versión oficial de ese grandísimo regreso de No Doubt, "Settle Down", que la crítica ya le ha dado muchas de sus mejores palabras. Travis Garland se encarga de ponerle un toque más rústico y lento a esta frenética canción que parece tener más sentido así, pero, sin embargo, sigo prefiriendo a los originales.

With a so much modest production, arrives the first official cover of that excellent comeback of No Doubt, "Settle Down", that critics have already gave it a lot of their best words. Travis Garland does in this cover the function of giving the song a more rustic and slower touch to this frenetic song that seems to have more sense like this, but, however, I prefer it originally.

Trey Songz "Simply Amazing" (Music Video)

Todo el mundo debería tener claro que la originalidad es una carencia bastante grande en la actual industria musical y un claro ejemplo es "Simply Amazing", el último single de Trey Songz, el cantante r'n'b con una de las voces más sensuales. ¿Por qué digo lo de la originalidad? Porque imagínate a Bruno Mars cantando "Just The Way You Are" en el videoclip de "Halo" de Beyoncé y tendrás esto.

Everybody has to be clear with the originality being a pretty big lack in actual music industry and a obvious example is "Simply Amazing", the last single of Trey Songz, the r'n'b singer with one of the most sensual voices. Why I've said that about originality? Because you have to imagine Bruno Mars singing "Just The Way You Are" in the music video of Beyoncé's "Halo" and you will see this.

Hot Chip "How Do You Do?" (Music Video)

Es lo que les faltaba por hacer a Hot Chip. Un videoclip psicodélico, pero con imágenes a lo karaoke que les da un toque muy hortera que hasta les queda "cool" y todo. "In Our Heads" es un discazo, pero no de esos discos que desde el primer momento entran bien, sino uno de esos que de vez en cuando conviene volverte a poner para descubrir nuevos matices. Así que, recomendadísimo.

This is what I missed Hot Chip to do. A psychedelic music video, but with karaoke images that gives it a very tacky touch, and that even fits in them. "In Our Heads" is a very great album, but not one of those albums that since the first moments fits good, but one of those that it's better to listen from time to time to discover new arrangements and shades. For that, this is very recommended.
