Canon has announced that they are developing a new mirrorless DSLR, more advanced than the current Canon EOS R. Some things are known:

Will be able to shoot 8k video

In-body image stabilization

2 card slots

20fps (electronic shutter), 12fps mechanical

Some things are not known, like if it’s full-frame, what those card slots are, Wifi, release date, and price, but it sounds interesting. More links to other sites are below:

Adobe announce Lightroom CC Classic, Lightroom CC

I have been an Adobe Lightroom user for, well, many a year. I bought a few boxes and downloaded editions (I still have a box of Lightroom 3 here on my desk!) and when CC and the “cloud” editions came out, i bought the Photography bundle, and have been using that since. Over the years, they have added many features, including mobile apps for iOS and Android, but performance on the desktop has, in some cases, suffered…

Well, today, Adobe have announced not 1, but 2 new versions of Lightroom: Lightroom CC Classic and Lightroom CC….. and to make things easier to figure out, Im going to refer to them as CC and Classic… just make life easier…

So, First things first: Boxed and perpetual editions of Lightroom are, well, on life support. Adobe will release some updates to the current perpetual edition (Lightroom 6) but there will be no perpetual version of either CC or Classic. So, moving to the monthly option is your only option. The Photography plan still exits: $9.99 per month with Classic, CC and Photoshop, plus 20Gb storage (more on that later) or an extra $10 a month gets you 1Tb storage. The alternative, if you need the rest of the Adobe suite is the full plan, but i wont go into details here…

Right, so CC and Classic. Whats the difference? Essentially, Classic is an existing Lightroom desktop (Mac and Windows), updated and made faster and more powerful. I have not had a chance to play with it yet, but there are some reviews and more details below from other photography sites. I will add my 2c when I get around to playing with it.

As for CC, its a complete rewrite of Lightroom. New code base, new design, v1.0 application. probably closer to the iOS and Android versions than the old desktop version, so a lot newer code base, and should be a LOT faster. again, still not got to play with this, but links below with more.

I mentioned above about storage and how much you get with the plan. Well, this is important for both CC and Classic. Both, like the existing Lightroom CC 2015 and Lightroom Mobile, sync with the cloud. But while CC 2015 syncs a Smart Preview (from what i can gather, its a DNG type file) new CC syncs the entire RAW image. Depending on the app you are editing on you may still use the DNG (probably phones and smaller tables) but if you are on a larger device (might be a setting somewhere) you get the full RAW from your camera. Essentially, plug your memory card into your PC, open CC, and download images, they get uploaded to the Cloud. You can then edit on your PC, your Phone, your tablet, or anywhere!

Now, CC will allow you to sync the full RAW image, but Classic only does the smart preview images. Classic will, however, download the full RAWs… Whether Classic will get an update to allow it to upload in full is unknown.

So, there you have it. There was an update to Photoshop too… full disclosure: I have it installed on my machine (not the new one, current version) but I have no idea how to use it, so I don’t… the links below include some details on the Photoshop update.

Nikon D850 announced

So, as you probably know, i am a Canon Guy… I have had a good few since i started shooting, and well, i am happy with them. My main shooter is currently a 5Ds, and i have a 5D MK II as a backup and a plan of possibly getting a 5D MK IV soon… Anyway, that being said, Nikon have announced their latest camera, the D850, and, well, after reading the sepecs, it sounds interesting…

So, first, specs:

45.7 MP CMOS

ISO from 64 - 25,600, expandable to 32-108,400

4K Video at up to 30FPS, 1080p @ 120FPS.

8K in-camera time lapse

7 FPS body only (9 with a battery grip)

153 point AF system

SD and XQD card slots

Wifi and Bluetooth, no GPS

So, not having much knowledge about previous Nikons, and thinking (based on the price of $3296.95 BHPhoto pre order) it seems to be somewhere between a 5D MK4 and a 5Ds. MK4 is around the same price, but less MP, same FPS (without battery grip) and shoots 4K Video. the 5Ds, on the other hand, has it beat on MP, does not shoot 4K Video, and shoots slower FPS. But, I think the D850 is aiming at the MK4, not the 5Ds… So, based on that, it will be interesting to see the reviews.

So, with that, i will leave the usual links to other sites who know what they are talking about.

PetaPixel: Nikon D850 Announced: First 45.7MP BSI Sensor, 4K Video, $3,300

And Nikon released the following video too:

Sony a9 - 20 FPS shooter!

Sony have just announced their new mirrorless flagship: the Alpha A9, and man, this is impressive!

shoots 1080p @ 120fps with full autofocus tracking too…

Canon EOS 6M, T7i and 77D announced

Canon have announced 3 new cameras today. First, the EOS 6M, a small, mirrorless camera, which looks, well, interesting… Its been a while since i had a Mirrorless camera (had a Sony one a few years back… cant even remember the name of it!) and for me, i have no use: I either shoot on my 5Ds or iPhone… Anyway, someone out there will find the specs interesting:

24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor

Digic 7 processor

100-25,600 ISO

Bluetooth

NFC

WiFi

3 inch tilting LCD

Optional EVF (electronic View finder…)

Shipps April, and will set you back $780 body only or $900 with a lense. more at Engadget and DPReview.

Canon also announced 2 “full” (not full frame, but more fuller) DSLRs, the 77D and the T7i (AKA the EOS 800D). specs are as follows:

both are speced as follows:

24.2mp APS-C CMOS with Digic 7

Dual Pixel AF

6PFS shooting

ISO 25600

45 point auto focus

Wifi, Bluetooth and NFC

Video @ 60PFS 1080P

Both arrive April, and the 77D will set you back $900 and the T7i/800D will set you back $750.
