How to Tie a Tie, Knot Instructions from Ties by NELSON WADE®

There is a large variety of tie knots, but at Ties by NELSON WADE®, we have a few basic tie knots illustrated with the step by step instructions on how to tie a knot for;

By knowing a couple of these knot styles, it is a great means to match the right necktie knot with the right shirt collar that you may choose for the day.

So the most important aspect of choosing the right tie knot to fit the width of your shirt collar, a general guideline is, the wider the collar spread is, the thicker and larger the knot you should choose. Dress shirts with a narrow collar spread, or button down shirt collars should have a smaller tie knot.

To help make this simpler, we divided two necktie knot groups for Narrow and Wide tie knots.

Narrow Necktie knots;
- The Four in Hand Knot
- Half Windsor Knot or sometimes called a Windsor Knot

Wide, Fuller Necktie knots;
- Prince Albert Knot, sometimes otherwise called The Double Knot
- Full Windsor knot, which also is called a Double Windsor Knot

At Ties by NELSON WADE, we always recommend that when it’s time to put on a tie, it’s important to make your choice of tie carefully. The appropriate chosen necktie and pocket square can put the finishing touches to your ensemble with an exclamation point!

A great looking tie should create the right amount of contrast between the tie, your chosen dress shirt and custom suit.

A few ensemble recommendations to consider…rule number 1, simple is good! A dark-colored necktie should typically be worn with a light-colored dress shirt and vice versa. You can never go wrong with this rule of thumb.

Patterns, patterns and more patterns!

How do you match patterns. The most important factor of matching patterns with your ensemble is to find a color in the necktie or a desired theme, to bring the ensemble together.

An example of this, when matching a patterned tie to a striped colored dress shirt, select a necktie that has contains the same or similar color as in your custom dress shirt.

Another rule of thumb patterned dress shirts and necktie, is when you select a checkered dress shirt and you want to wear a necktie that will compliment your dress shirt, the larger pattern should be on your tie, the smaller checkered dress shirt pattern should be as a background.
