A more versatile option than the headband, halos can be worn to achieve the same look as the headband, but offer more comfort. On Bended Knee

We all know this tradition....you're in a crowded restaurant, at a landmark, someplace special, and out of the corner of your eye, you spot a fellow getting down on one knee. Sure enough, you see looks of surprise, excitement, possibly tears and eventually a ring, followed by an answer (and you know you're always rooting for a "Yes!"). So many of us have dreamed of this moment, the moment where you see your special someone bending down on one knee, only to swoon you with a tender proposal, and - hopefully, one hell of a ring.

So, where did this tradition of proposing on one knee come from? To be honest, it appears as though no one knows for certain; however, there are definite theories as to its origin.

Dating back to a time when there were actual knights in shining armor, it was customary for knights to dip their knee when receiving an honor from a king or queen, demonstrating servitude. It was also common for Knights to kneel before a tournament, until their ladies tossed a memento as an indication of her favor.

The act of kneeling is also a very symbolic and important sign of virtue within many religions. Whether it be kneeling before entering a church, participating in ceremony or bending down to pray - the act of kneeling demonstrates goodwill, respect and devotion. The other comparison made is the act of bowing before a victorious enemy - an act of surrender.

Regardless of its origin, this act itself is very sweet, and in most cases, hoped for. I like to interpret it as a symbol of one's surrender to love, the willingness to be forthcoming with everything you are, humbly asking the best person you know to walk this life with you. So, when the time comes where you ask yourself whether or not to follow this tradition, by all means, do!

SIGNATURE COCKTAILS FOR YOUR RECEPTION

More and more couples enjoy adding personal touches to all aspects of their wedding ceremonies and receptions. One of my personal favorites - a signature drink! What better way to set the tone and let the celebrating begin as your guests move from ceremony to reception, than to offer your signature cocktail! Here are a few suggestions, selected for their deliciousness and lovely color:

Yellow:

Lemon Drop Martini - resulting in a beautiful and tasty light yellow drink.

2 parts Lemon Vodka

1 part dry Vermouth or Triple Sec

1 part lime juice.

Combine ingredients and ice in cocktail shaker and shake. Strain into sugar rimmed martini glass and garnish with a twist of lemon.

Green:

This is my absolute favorite cocktail - The Mojito.

1 oz Vodka

3 oz Mojito Rum

3 oz club soda

Mix rum and vodka with ice in a cocktail shaker and shake. Rub lime wedge around glass and muddle mint and remaining lime juice in the bottom of the glass. Add ice and strain the alcohol into the glass. Delicious!

Pink:

The Pink Elizabeth - Strawberries and Lemonade, you can't help but think of spring and summer.

2 parts ginger ale

1 part pink lemonade

1 oz. Vodka

3 strawberries

Mix Ginger Ale and Pink Lemonade. Add 1 oz vodka to glass. Drop in a few strawberries and let sit a few moments. Last, fill glass with juice mixture.

Red:

Red Apple Martini - A bright shade of red, perfect for an autumn wedding!

1.5 oz Sour Apple Schnapps

1.5 oz Canadian Whiskey

1.5 oz Cranberry Juice

Fill shaker with ice and pour in all three ingredients. Shake well and strain into martini glass. Yum!

For the Chocolate Lover:

Sealed With A Kiss.

2oz. Chocolate Liqueur
1.5 oz Vodka
Hershey's Kiss
Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice, shake well and pour into a chilled cocktail glass, garnished with a Hershey's Kiss.

My Love Affair With The Royal Family

Today is truly a day for Celebration, as England's King-To-Be has wed the beautiful Catherine Middleton, who walked into Westminster Abbey a commoner, and exited a princess. The sort of thing that girls, old and young alike, dream of.

This has been an exceptionally tremendous event in my household, as I was raised to love the Royal Family. My mother and mother's family are English, with my mom's childhood home just twenty minutes away from Buckingham Palace. My mom and her family moved to the states when she was just eleven, but the English culture never left their hearts, and was ever-present in my upbringing. English accents are as comforting as a warm embrace and a cup of tea, and I take delight in all that is prim and proper. More than just the trifle at Christmas and roses in the garden, I was raised to respect both the English and American Cultures.

So you can imagine the excitement thirty years ago when Lady Diana wed Prince Charles. Even though I was only three, I still vividly remember its beauty, as I watched in awe alongside the rest of the world. That gorgeous fairy tale gown and twenty-five foot train, I fell hard and fast, right then and there. My Nana later presented me with the most gorgeous set of Princess Diana paper dolls, and I have to tell you, even at that young age I could tell you which event each of those darling little paper outfits was from.

And so we have been eagerly anticipating the joy of today's event. From the Royal Guard to the gorgeous hats, carriages, Sultans, little bridesmaids following behind and the beautiful children's choir, I am still moved by the beauty of the event. I couldn't control the goosebumps as the horns blared at the arrival of the Queen, who looked so pretty, draped from head to toe in a gorgeous shade of canary yellow. Why the vivid yellow? It has been said that the Queen says it is her duty to be seen, and therefore, must make herself as visible to her public as possible. I don't know why, but there's even something romantic about that.

Now, I mustn't forget the men. Prince William and Prince Harry looked so smart and handsome, two real-life Prince Charmings. I can't help but smile inside at the site of those two handsome men, so brilliant in their uniforms, smiling and sharing comfortable banter back and forth - two friends, perhaps in part, because I sit here typing as the mother of two little princes myself, wishing the same sort of friendship (and grand weddings) for their futures.

And, of course, the bride! The true center of this glorious event. I think it's safe to say that we all agree with Prince William, whom we saw blushingly whisper "beautiful" to his lovely bride. I couldn't hold back the tears as I watched the bride, who presented herself with such sophistication and simple grace. From the perfect cut and fit of her gown, to the gorgeous selection of lace - one can't help but reflect on that lovely image of Grace Kelly from her wedding day. Simply stunning, Ms. Kate. Simply stunning. If we didn't love you already, you stole our hearts when you bowed to the queen, and then ever-so-sweetly shared a kiss with your prince. I think we've all found our new sweetheart, and offer our best wishes for the newest marriage in The Royal Family. A sincere congratulations to the Duke and Duchess. Thank you for including us all in such a wonderful and happy event.

Now, this designer's got some work to do, I have to try and interpret that gorgeous tiara - at a fraction of the price!

The Top 3 Things We Wish We Hadn't Registered For.

Following last week's posting, "The Top 5 Things We Wished We'd Registered For," it seems only appropriate to follow it with the top 3 things we wish we hadn't registered for.

1. Extremely Expensive Bedding - You must know that I LOVE luxurious bedding, and cannot wait until the day I get to walk into Pottery Barn and purchase the complete set of whatever collection I happen to be coveting - including every single accent piece, blanket and pillow that goes with it. However, if you have anything other than a king size bed, a pet that sleeps with you and/or you would like to have children - you might want to opt for a less expensive set on the wedding registry.

You see, my husband and I registered for the most gorgeous set of Calvin Klein bedding - with the entire set accompanying a very hefty, four-digit price tag. It really was gorgeous; however, we had a dog, a queen size bed and plans for kids. Well, the dog got to the bedding first. He developed a weird chewing habit that caused him to decorate nearly every piece with holes. I know, I know...there were things we could have done to prevent this (trust me, I'm kicking myself still). But to be fair, we were young, busy and loved our puppy! So, soon we had bedding resembling swiss cheese. Then came the kids, which really goes hand in hand with the problem of not having a king size bed. You see, we wake up many mornings not only with each other and the dog, but also our two little boys who have wandered in after a bad dream, a scary noise or simply because it was 5am and they just needed to get up. The upside, now we wake up in a king size bed - room for all, and no need for thousand-dollar, swiss cheese bedding.

2. Extremely Expensive Glassware - I'm not referring to Crystal. I love Crystal and highly recommend it, but what I don't recommend is very expensive glassware for everyday use. My husband and I registered for some beautiful glassware at Pottery Barn - $6, $8 and $10 per glass, which we got. However, within 4 months all the glassware developed a strange foggy hue. This, I learned, can be attributed to dishwasher detergent containing citrus. Pottery Barn was wonderful, and let us exchange the glassware, for glasses from a different collection. After about 6 years, we were down to less than half of that lovely set. This was when I found out that all glassware, no matter how costly, has a lifespan. It's only going to last you so long. We replaced this glassware with a very simple and sturdy set from Macy's, which cost just a fraction of the price, and we are quite happy with their look, how they wash and the fact that we still have every single piece. I should let you know that I do love Pottery Barn - glassware and all! But, if you would rather complete the gorgeous set of Pottery Barn Silverware on your registry for, rather then the glassware - do that!

3. A Really Large, Expensive Toaster - Before I tell you why we despise our toaster, I need to tell you a little bit about my husband. Every single wedding he ever attended, prior to our own, he always gave the the couple a toaster. Whatever one they registered for. I'm still not sure why exactly, but it became his thing. So, when it was our time to select the toaster - you can imagine that we chose the most gleaming, shiny and expensive 4-slot toaster we could find. We were actually quite giddy about it, and were so eager to know which one of our guests would get us the toaster. I won't keep you in suspense - we still don't know. It was purchased from our registry; however, we never received it. We really were disappointed - NOT because we really wanted the toaster, but now that it had become my husband's signature gift, we were more excited about knowing WHO was going to follow his tradition. So, we purchased that very same toaster, using one of the many generous gift cards bestowed upon us. We continue to use that toaster every single day - and cannot stand it. It's huge, slow, super heavy and does a terrible job of holding the crumbs. I got so tired of looking at it on the counter that I finally stuck it in a cupboard. However, my family really likes toast. So I have to haul out that big, messy thing at least twice a day, only to wait 3 minutes for bread to toast. Personally, I think my husband should reclaim his title, purchasing a new, much smaller, quicker 2-slot toaster for this couple - the slighter older, incredibly wiser and still very, very happy one.

Top 5 Things I Wish We'd Registered For!

Oh the joy of Registering! Take a moment and just think about it - basically, it's like writing a humongous, grown-up Christmas List - knowing you are going to get nearly everything you want! It is wonderful - you can coordinate everything on your list to match your tastes, your style - and better yet, everything will match! And it doesn't stop there. All of these lovely items will come beautifully packaged wearing well-wishes for you and your new spouse to enjoy for years to come....or so I thought.

Nearly eight years into my marriage - three houses, two children and a completely different lifestyle away from that gorgeous day - I sooooo wish I could explore the likes of Macy's, Williams Sonoma, Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn with that glorious little scan gun, only to zap every single item my heart desires. (And let me tell you, what my heart desires today versus eight years ago is vastly different) Rather than spend the duration of this blog post telling you about what I wouldn't have registered for (Oh don't you worry - I'll be writing that soon), I'm going to tell you about the top five items I wish we would have registered for. Some of these items were actually on our registry; however, we opted not to purchase them....

Okay, here's the list:

1. Kitchen Aid Mixer. I think most of you plan on putting this on your list, if you haven't already done so. May you be so lucky as to receive this in your slew of gifts! However, should you not receive this, and the time comes when you need to return 5 toasters, 7 crock pots, duplicates of dish ware, the Waterford candlesticks ( I know they are lovely but really, wouldn't you rather something else?) and a whole cart of other thoughtful gifts - the time will come when you have to ask yourself, "Do I, or don't I?" My answer, Do!

I had registered for the lovely pale green - it matched my kitchen at the time (although now I secretly covet the vibrant tangerine!) With our very first home under our belts and a vast amount of empty cupboards and closets to fill, my husband and I opted to stick with practical items. What fools we were. Fast forward 7 years, adding in two little boys who are the world's pickiest eaters and a gazillion holiday gatherings, preschool parties and play dates, I really wish we had purchased it. Not only would it look smashing on our kitchen counter - but life would just be easier. Seven minute frosting? No way - I don't have time to mix anything with the with the hand mixer for seven minutes! If I had the Kitchen Aid Mixer? Heck, I'd be brave enough to try the 11 minute frosting! Just add ingredients, flick the switch and go. You get the idea, so heed my advice - do it!

2. Denby Dinnerware. It may not be the most exciting or modern dinnerware available - it's definitely not as pretty as Pottery Barn's ceramics - but it lasts! For everyday dinnerware, you cannot beat this classic. It's microwave, oven, dishwasher and freezer safe! Plus, they do have some very nice looking sets. We opted for the plain white china (not Denby) - 16 of each and every piece. We thought it was modern, we loved to entertain and so we wanted many servings, and we thought it would go with everything - matching our ever-changing taste throughout the years. All of which are true; however, we finally had to ditch the entire set last year because every single piece had chipped. Trust me, go for the Denby, or another trusted, similar brand. Your future self will thank you!

3. Le Creuset Dutch Oven. Not only does this timeless brand come in a variety of fun colors, it lasts. I know it's pricey, and I really didn't know what I would use it for when I had already received my brand new set of pots and pans, in addition to my brand new set of stoneware baking dishware. Well, as my subscriptions to magazines like Better Homes and Gardens, Martha Stewart, etc. continued to grow - so did my desire for a complete set of Le Creuset. So many recipes I wished I could try - but I didn't have a Dutch Oven. Gorgeous baked tarts and hot artichoke dips that I couldn't offer guests, because, you guessed it, no Le Creuset. However, I must tell you that I did recently get my first Dutch Oven and lovely little 8x8 Le Creuset dish, and I LOVE them. They are so worth it!

4. Floor Cleaning Devise such as Roomba or Neato. To be fair, these things did not exist when I was registering, but had they - oh boy, you bet I'd have added this to my registry! I despise sweeping. What's worse? Vacuuming. These little gems do all of that for you, every day. They get under all your nooks and crannies and are even smart enough to charge themselves. Save yourself hours upon hours and register for this. Just think, if you didn't take my advise and get yourself the Kitchen Aid Mixer, well you can go ahead and make that seven minute frosting with your hand mixer, instead of vacuum.

5. Fine China. I couldn't really find 24-hour nanny service, or liposuction on any registries - so here is something else that I really wish we'd registered for, with no practical reason for wanting fine china, other than it's pretty and I want some. To a certain degree, I suppose my desire grew as did the number of chips and scratches on my every day (non Denby) china. When the day gets hectic and I see so many of the other things we'd registered for break, or get sticky from toddler fingers, I would be delighted to know that I at least had something gorgeous and special tucked away just for the grown ups. Granted, my Nana did give me the most beautiful, complete English Bone China Tea Set. But what can I say, I'm hooked, and now I want it all! At the prices they charge for these sets, I just can't bring myself to fork over money that could more sensibly go toward diapers and 529 accounts. If you can splurge, then it's worth it.

Rather than end this post with a clever anecdote, or remind you that it's the thought that counts when receiving oodles of wedding presents, I'm going to share with you the weirdest wedding present my husband and I received. It was a Happy Birthday Plate. Not just any Happy Birthday Plate, this one came from a paint your own pottery shop. Someone had actually taken the time to paint this 11" plate. A blue border, a birthday cake with candles hand-painted in the center, complete with the words "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!" written around the edge. There was no card attached. We have no idea where this gift came from. Perhaps a prank pulled by one of our close friends, maybe someone grabbed the wrong gift and accidentally gave Grandma a pair of Calvin Klein pillow cases, or possibly this gift had been left behind from the previous event held at our venue. To this day, it remains a mystery. Sadly, the kids broke this plate last year - making me wish even more that I had the Neato to help vacuum the mess, the Denby because that plate wouldn't break, the Kitchen Aid Mixer because the cake would have tasted better, and the fine china because at least I could smile knowing that something special was tucked safely away, far out of reach from sticky little fingers. Se la vi!

Hawaii continues to remain one of the most popular honeymoon destinations. Rightly so, as it is beautiful, romantic, warm and just plain lovely. My personal favorite island is Kauai, which is the wettest but also most lush of the islands, and home of the Na Pali Coast. It is simply breathtaking and truly magical!

Even if you didn't fall in love with the most recent release of The Heartbreak Kid, you were sure to fall in love with the venue. Filmed at The Esperanza Hotel in Cabo San Lucas, I couldn't help but drool at the amenities of this glorious destination. With glistening white sand beaches, non-stop sunshine, gorgeous pools and the blue waters of the baja peninsula - it has it all! Not only does this destination fulfill all of the promises of a tropical paradise, but it also offers an exciting nightlife. Perfect!

The United Kingdom
Castle hopping throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland will be the perfect setting for any couple seeking a beautiful countryside honeymoon in lieu of the tropics. How romantic to experience this beautiful, rich history in such a pretty setting. Some highlights - be sure to visit Hampton Court Palace and Windsor Court Palace - both within twenty minutes of my mom's childhood home. Also Brodick Castle, Lincoln Castle, Canterbury Castle, Cahir Castle and Pembroke Castle are all rumored to be a must-see!

Something a little more local for the beer enthusiast! Check out this amazing video by Deschutes Brewery, which highlights Oregon's impeccable beauty, as well as how many of these delicious hoppy beverages earned their names. When I first saw this, I couldn't help but think of what a fun trip this would actually be, and completely perfect for the adventure seekers honeymoon! Oregon really is a scenic beauty. My lovely cousin had one of the most romantic weddings ever...she was married at sunset just off the Thames River. Everything about her wedding was so lovely...from the silhouette profile party favors to her untraditional, form fitting, silk lavender gown and even sailing away from the reception on a gorgeous boat with her handsome groom. Truly, a night to remember...Too bad I couldn't make it. But after seeing the photographs and hearing my Nana talk so excitedly about it, it's easy to see why the love for this occasion was contagious!

We already know that no two brides are alike, so it's no wonder that I am constantly getting requests for color variations and custom pieces. I've even just made my first teal birdcage veil! I am always happy to accommodate, whatever your preference. Here are some recent variations reflecting some very popular colors for 2011. In addition to Blooms, Veils, Combs, Tiaras, Hairpins and Hairbands, I have found myself making Bridal Sashes/Belts and Boutonnieres as well!

3.5" Sewn Silk Dupioni Sash in Dark Grey,
with a version of the Maisie Bloom for Embellishment.

The Maisie is a popular one! Three blossoms instead of two,
all in pink and twice as full.

And sometimes, a bride wants something completely new -
like the lovely Ellen!

Everyone loves the Clara, and I think it is exceptionally gorgeous in this pallet.
I was so inspired, I just had to make a boutonniere to match!

Choosing a song for your first dance...

One wedding day blunder that is, in hindsight, not so bad...

I loved my wedding! It was beautiful, emotional, romantic, lovely and everything I could have hoped for...almost. There was one very small, teeny-tiny glitch, the DJ didn't have the song. THE SONG, the one that my husband and I would dance our first dance to. The one we'd spent hours trying to pick. One of our favorite bands, with perfect lyrics and a melody to withstand time (we thought). The song that most describes us as a couple. The song that was expected to stir a whirlwind of emotion for the rest of our lives. You know that image you've tucked in the back of your mind, the one where you drop whatever you're doing because that song, your song, has just come on the radio and you can't help but smile, listen and possibly even sneak in a slow dance. Ours was "Wild Horses" by the Sundays - don't laugh. It was cool.

I should remind you that I was married in 2003 - before ipods and even MP3 players could be found in every purse and back pocket. As a type-A personality, I assure you, I double and triple-checked that the DJ would have all of our songs. Well, he didn't, and he decided to tell me this just before we cut the cake. Right after this, we were going to have our first dance. On a whim, we had to look through his list of hits and were left choosing "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel. Okay, you can laugh at this. We do. We went with it, and danced our first dance. We couldn't help but laugh. Sure I had a moment of panic, but what could I do? Again, let me insert that it was 2003. The song was MUCH longer than I'd remembered, and it was a hilarious dance. Not a bad way to start off a marriage - laughing in the arms of the one you love.

So, what's the point of this post? Sometimes things don't go as planned, and that's okay. Just roll with it. Actually, our little wedding day blunder didn't turn out to be such a bad thing. How often do you hear "In Your Eyes" on the radio? Enough that every now and then I'll catch it, and it will do just what I'd hoped - throw me back to that moment of that gorgeous day, where I couldn't help but giggle with my best friend. Perhaps it did set the tone for our marriage, because we're still laughing, a lot! How often do I hear the Sundays "Wild Horses" on the radio? Never. Still a very lovely and cherished song between the two of us; however, this one hasn't made its way into the radio's random rotation and, thus, doesn't offer the promise of sucking us out of a moment and throwing us back to that day.

So here's your tip. Make the most of whatever happens on your wedding day, mistakes and all. And more importantly, make a back-up CD and/or download all of your must-have tunes, just in case you end up with the same fella we did! ;)
