Today’s photos are of the old Laundry Building at Clemson. It was typical for the Freshmen Rats to haul laundry for the upper classmen, as seen in the picture above.

Here is an outside view of the Laundry Building.

The below picture shows the Cadets dropping off their bags of laundry on the outside of the building through an opening in the door.

Here is a picture of the inside of the laundry with the ladies sorting and tagging the bags so that they could be returned to the proper owner. As you can see, the laundry would literally pile up on laundry day at Clemson!

The final picture shows the end of the process, with the workers folding the clothes in preparation for returning them to the Cadets.

Game Notes And Broadcast Info As Tigers Open ACC Baseball Tournament Play

The Road To Omaha Continues

The Road To Omaha Continues as Clemson (39-17), the #5 seed, will open its ACC Tournament slate by playing #4-seeded N.C. State (42-13) on Wednesday at 7:00 PM on the first day of the ACC Tournament. The Tigers will be the designated visiting team and occupy the first-base dugout.

The games will be played at Durham (NC) Bulls Athletic Park. It will be the eighth time the ACC Baseball Tournament is held in Durham and the first time since 2011. The round-robin format, in its seventh year, features two separate four-team brackets that guarantees all eight teams will play a minimum of three games and maximum of four games during the ACC Tournament.

Clemson’s first three games in the ACC Tournament will be televised live by Regional Sports Network. The three games will also be available via webcast at ESPN3.

All of Clemson’s ACC Tournament games will be broadcast live on the radio by Clemson Tiger Sports Network and WCCP 104.9 FM. Live stats will also be available at ClemsonTigers.com for all Tiger games.

The Series (N.C. State)

Clemson and N.C. State have met 187 times, with the Tigers holding a 112-74-1 lead in the series dating to the 1921 season. The two teams have faced each other at least one time every year since 1953.

Earlier this season at Doak Field in Raleigh, the Tigers won the first two games by scores of 10-5 and 7-4 before N.C. State won the series-finale 4-1. Last season at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, the Wolfpack won two of three games.

The Tigers hold an 18-11 lead in ACC Tournament games. The last time the two teams met in the ACC Tourney was on May 28, 2011, as Clemson defeated the Wolfpack 6-3 at Durham (NC) Bulls Athletic Park. N.C. State’s last victory over the Tigers in the ACC Tourney came in 2010 by a score of 13-8 at Greensboro, NC. Clemson leads the all-time series 14-12 in neutral-site contests as well.

Jack Leggett has a 46-24 record against N.C. State as Clemson’s head coach, including a 9-2 mark in ACC Tournament games. Leggett was 7-18 against the Wolfpack as Western Carolina’s head coach, meaning he is 53-42 all-time against N.C. State.

The Starting Pitchers (N.C. State)
N.C. State will start freshman lefthander Brad Stone (2-2, 6.23 ERA) on the mound. The Charlotte, NC native has made 11 starts and three relief appearances for a total of 47.2 innings pitched. He has allowed 44 hits (.240 opponents’ batting average) and 21 walks with 53 strikeouts.

The Tigers will counter with sophomore righthander Daniel Gossett (9-3, 2.20 ERA) on Wednesday. The Lyman, SC native has made 14 starts for a total of 86.0 innings pitched. He has given up 67 hits (.209 opponents’ batting average) and 31 walks with 83 strikeouts.

The Wolfpack
N.C. State, led by 17th-year Head Coach Elliott Avent and ranked as high as #9 in the nation, enters the ACC Tournament with a 42-13 overall record and 19-10 ACC mark after sweeping Duke at Durham Bulls Athletic Park last weekend. N.C. State, who has won 24 of its last 27 games, is 2-0 in neutral-site contests in 2013.

N.C. State, who is 11-2 in one-run games, is averaging 6.5 runs per game and hitting .285 with a .397 slugging percentage and .369 on-base percentage thanks to 222 walks and 51 hit-by-pitches against 331 strikeouts. The team has also totaled 110 doubles, 14 triples, 25 home runs, and 99 stolen bases in 126 attempts.

Trea Turner leads the team with a .383 batting average, 11 doubles, four triples, six homers, 38 RBIs, 58 runs, a .463 on-base percentage, and 24 steals in 45 games. Jake Fincher is hitting .326 with 14 steals, while Bryan Adametz is batting .317. Tarran Senay has added six homers and 49 RBIs as well.

The pitching staff has a 3.40 ERA and .222 opponents’ batting average along with 493 strikeouts against 208 walks in 500.0 innings pitched. Senior lefthander Grant Sasser has a team-high seven saves, while senior righty Chris Overman has six saves and has not allowed an earned run in 21.2 innings pitched over 17 relief appearances. N.C. State, who has allowed 68 steals in 90 attempts, is fielding at a .968 clip as well.

The TigersClemson, ranked as high as #14 in the nation, enters the ACC Tournament with a 39-17 overall record and an 18-12 ACC mark after losing two of three games at #8 Florida State last weekend. The Tigers, who have won 23 of their last 29 games, are 1-0 in neutral-site contests in 2013.

The Tigers are averaging 5.6 runs per game and hitting .282 with a .367 slugging percentage and .367 on-base percentage thanks to 239 walks and 30 hit-by-pitches against 353 strikeouts. Clemson has also totaled 80 doubles, 14 triples, 18 homers, and 102 stolen bases in 139 attempts.

Shane Kennedy leads the team in batting average (.321) and on-base percentage (.419) along with totaling four homers, four triples, five doubles, 33 RBIs, and 18 steals. Garrett Boulware is batting .310 with seven homers and 43 RBIs, while Steve Wilkerson is hitting .313 with a team-high 16 doubles. Thomas Brittle has added a team-high 19 stolen bases as well.

The pitching staff has a 2.97 ERA and .258 opponents’ batting average in 506.0 innings pitched. The staff has allowed 177 walks against 363 strikeouts, good for a 2.05 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Junior righthander Matt Campbell has seven of the team’s 14 saves, while senior righty Scott Firth has four saves. The Tigers are fielding at a .972 clip as well.

Two Tigers will return to their home state of North Carolina for the ACC Tournament, freshman utility player Jackson Campana (Charlotte) and freshman righthander Brody Koerner (Concord).

Clemson’s ACC Tournament HistoryThis is the 40th ACC Baseball Tournament, and Clemson has been to the finals in 21 of the previous 39 tournaments, nine more than any other school. Clemson has won nine ACC Tournaments in history, more than any other school, including in 2006 when it defeated N.C. State 8-4 in the championship game. Clemson has a 103-62 record in ACC Tournament games. The Tigers also have the most All-ACC Tournament selections (55) in history.

Prior to capturing the 2006 title, the Tigers had not won it all since 1994. That was Jack Leggett’s first year as Clemson’s head coach. Clemson defeated Florida State 4-1 in the championship game held in Greenville (SC) Municipal Stadium.

Leggett has been on the field to accept the championship trophy three times in all. In 1993, then Head Coach Bill Wilhelm was suspended for the championship game. Leggett, then the top assistant for the Tigers, was in charge for that 1993 title game, an 11-7 win over N.C. State. Clemson’s nine ACC Tournament titles came in 1976, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, and 2006. Wilhelm is credited with the first seven tournament titles.

Clemson has been a consistent team in tournament play. The Tigers have won at least two tournament games in 32 of their previous 39 appearances. While Clemson has won the title just once since 1994, the Tigers have been to the championship round seven of the last 19 years. Clemson is also one of only two teams to play in all 39 ACC Tournaments. The Tigers join Virginia as the only teams to play in every ACC Tourney.

Only 15 times in the 39-year history has the #1 seed captured the title. Clemson has done it six times, Georgia Tech and North Carolina three times, and Florida State, Miami (FL), and Virginia once.

The Tigers have won the ACC Tournament with a perfect record five times. The Tigers were 3-0 in 1976 and 1978 in winning both events at Clemson, then they had a 4-0 record in winning the title at Raleigh, NC in 1980. Clemson’s only other perfect run through the tournament came in 1991, when a Tiger team that won a school-record 60 games had a 5-0 mark in the ACC Tournament held at Greenville, SC.

This will be the 17th time the tournament is held in the state of North Carolina after it was played at NewBridge Bank Park in 2010 and 2012 as well as Durham Bulls Athletic Park in 2009 and 2011. Prior to 2009, the previous time it was played in the Tar Heel State was in 1999, when it was played at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The 2014 tournament is scheduled to be played at NewBridge Bank Park.

Clemson has a winning record against every ACC team (excluding Boston College, who has not faced the Tigers in the event) in tournament play with the exception of Florida State and Virginia Tech. Clemson is 9-11 against the Seminoles and 0-1 against the Hokies in the ACC Tournament.

The Tigers are also 8-4 against Duke, 16-10 versus Georgia Tech, 12-0 against Maryland, 2-1 versus Miami (FL), 16-11 against North Carolina, 18-11 versus N.C. State, 10-8 against Virginia, and 12-5 versus Wake Forest. That computes to a 103-62 record and 62.4-percent winning mark. Only Florida State (64.9) has a better winning percentage than Clemson in ACC Tournament play.

Clemson was the dominant team when the ACC Tournament was played at Greenville, SC from 1987-95. In those nine tournaments, Clemson posted a 36-12 record, won the event four times, and finished second on two other occasions. Clemson won at least three games in eight of the nine tournaments held in Greenville as well.

The ACC Tournament began in 1973 and has been held every year but one since then. In 1979, Clemson won the regular-season title and was declared the conference champion. The tournament was not held because of a scheduling conflict between school exam schedules and the tourney. Clemson has been declared conference champion 14 times in history, more than any other school.

PollsThe Tigers remained in the top 20 of all three polls after going 2-2 in four games last week. Clemson stayed at #14 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and fell one spot to #18 in the Baseball America rankings. The Tigers also moved up one spot to #18 in the USA Today coaches poll.

The top-25 rankings means that Clemson has had at least least one top-25 ranking during all 20 of Jack Leggett’s 20 seasons as head coach at Clemson.

Clemson has had at least one final top-25 ranking in 15 of Leggett’s first 19 seasons in Tigertown. The Tigers have also been ranked #1 for 20 weeks by at least one of the three major polls under Leggett. Their last #1 ranking came on February 12, 2007 by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball.

ACC StandingsThe Tigers finished in third place in the ACC Atlantic Division standings with an 18-12 league record. Florida State finished in first place in the division with a 20-10 record, while N.C. State was second at 19-10. North Carolina finished atop the ACC Coastal Division standings as well as the overall ACC standings at 21-7.

In the overall ACC standings, Clemson finished in fifth place. It was the 19th time in 20 seasons under Head Coach Jack Leggett that the Tigers had a winning league record.

Tigers Lead the ACC in Stolen BasesClemson leads the ACC in stolen bases with 102 in 56 games, good for 1.8 steals per game. That is despite no Tiger totaling 20 stolen bases in 2013. Five different Tigers, Thomas Brittle (19), Shane Kennedy (18), Steven Duggar (15), Jay Baum (10), and Steve Wilkerson (10), have double-digit steals. Nine Tigers have at least six steals as well.

The team’s season total has made a drastic jump during the second half of the season. In the first 28 games, Clemson had 36 steals (1.3 per game). But in the last 28 games, the Tigers have 66 steals (2.4 per game).

Three Tigers Named to All-ACC TeamThree Tigers were named Second-Team All-ACC in 2013, sophomore righthander Daniel Gossett, junior utility player Shane Kennedy, and junior infielder Steve Wilkerson. The team was compiled by a vote of the 12 ACC head coaches.

Gossett has a 9-3 record, 2.20 ERA, and .209 opponents’ batting average along with 83 strikeouts against 31 walks in 86.0 innings pitched over 14 starts.

Kennedy is hitting a team-best .321 with four homers, four triples, five doubles, 33 RBIs, 42 runs, a .419 on-base percentage, and 18 steals in his first season as a Tiger.

Wilkerson, who was a Second-Team All-ACC selection in 2012, is batting .313 with two homers, two triples, a team-high 16 doubles, 32 RBIs, 34 runs, and 10 steals.

Crownover Led ACC in ERA in League Games

Matthew Crownover did what few freshmen in ACC history have done...lead the ACC in ERA in league games. In 36.1 innings pitched over seven starts, he had a 1.73 ERA, allowing only seven earned runs. That includes giving up only four combined earned runs in his last six starts in ACC regular-season games.

Gossett Named ACC Pitcher-of-the-WeekDaniel Gossett was named ACC Pitcher-of-the-Week for his performance at #8 Florida State on May 16. He allowed three hits (all singles), no runs, and three walks with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched to earn the win in Clemson’s 8-2 victory over the Seminoles.

Moorefield a Lefty SpecialistSenior lefthander Joseph Moorefield (Woodruff, SC) has appeared in 13 games on the mound, all out of the bullpen, and has pitched 4.1 innings. He has been effective getting out lefthanded batters, as he has given up just one earned run (2.08 ERA) in 2013. Moorefield has made 62 relief appearances in his career as well.

Before there was TD's and even before Dan’s Sandwich Show, this prime location on College Avenue was the location of the College Café and Sandwich Shop.

The photo above is an interior photo taken in the early 1940’s of the establishment.

Cadet Life In 1950’s And A “Sugar Report”

Today’s photos span the 1950’s and show what life was like for a Clemson Cadet in the 1950’s at Clemson.

The above photo shows a cadet standing outside the old post office (now Mell Hall) reading a “sugar report”, which was a letter from a girl. The building in the background of the picture would one day be Dan’s Sandwich Shop and is now TD’s.

The next photo is from inside the old barracks and it shows the Cadets passing the time during the evening. The Cadets thumbing through some newspapers and magazines.

The photo below shows another view inside the old barracks, only this time the Cadets that occupied this room have added a little flair to their room (notice the window curtains!).

The next photo shows the cadets inside the old barracks sitting around a table with one cadet playing the harmonica.

Pairings Announced For ACC Tournament

The Road To Omaha Continues

The 2013 ACC Baseball Championship gets under way Wednesday morning and the pairings were announced today.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Pairings and game times have been set for the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship, which will be held from Wednesday, May 22 through Sunday, May 26 at Durham (N.C.) Bulls Athletic Park.

UNC (47-8, 21-7 ACC) earned the No. 1 overall seed and will head up Pool A. The Tar Heels will be joined by fourth-seeded NC State (42-13, 19-10), fifth-seeded Clemson (39-17, 18-12) and eighth-seeded Miami (35-21, 14-16).

Florida State (44-11, 20-10) earned the No. 2 overall seed and will be joined in Pool B by third-seeded Virginia (45-9, 22-8), sixth-seeded Virginia Tech (35-19, 15-14) and seventh-seeded Georgia Tech (33-23, 15-15).

All eight teams in this year’s ACC Championship field are ranked among the top 20 of the NCAA’s most recent RPI report. North Carolina is ranked as high as No. 2 nationally in the latest national polls, with NC State as high as No. 5, Virginia No. 7, Florida State No. 8, Clemson No. 14 and Virginia Tech No. 22.

Under the pool-play format, each team will play one game against each of the other three opponents in its pool Wednesday through Saturday (May 22-25). The two teams with the best records within their respective pools will advance to the title game on Sunday, May 26, with the winner earning the ACC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Play begins on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Florida State facing defending champion Georgia Tech. Virginia meets Virginia Tech at 3 p.m., followed NC State vs. Clemson at 7 p.m.

Virginia meets Georgia Tech in Thursday’s 11 a.m. game, while North Carolina swings into action against Miami at 3 p.m. Florida State faces Virginia Tech in the 7 p.m. Thursday game.

Friday’s slate opens with NC State against Miami at 11 a.m., followed by Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech at 3 p.m. North Carolina and Clemson square off in the 7 p.m. game.

Saturday’s opener finds Florida State facing Virginia at 11 a.m. Clemson will meet Miami at 3 p.m., followed by North Carolina vs. NC State at 7 p.m.

The championship game between the Pool A and Pool B winners will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.

Fans can still purchase tickets to next week's competition. Complete books to all 13 games are available, as well as individual game tickets that can be purchased by calling the Durham Bulls ticket office at 919-956-BULL.

All 13 games of this year’s ACC Baseball Championship will be televised for the seventh straight year. Regional Sports Networks from across the conference footprint and across the nation will carry all 12 games on Wednesday through Saturday. Please check theACC.com for RSN coverage of each game. Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship game will televised nationally by ESPN2.

All games will live-streamed via the Internet by ESPN3. In addition, all 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. games will be broadcast via satellite radio on Sirius XM 85. The 7 p.m. Wednesday (May 22) and Thursday (May 23) games will be broadcast on Sirius 93/XM 190. Sunday afternoon’s championship game will be carried by Sirius XM 91 (College SportsNation).

“Pool Him!”

Today's photo is of a tradition that many a young Clemson student had the “honor” of taking part in.

"Pool him!" That is a term that meant someone's going into the water.

Many a Clemson Cadet has been tossed into the old reflection pond throughout the years.

There have also been some dips into the fountain at the front of the Clemson House.

How about in one of the large sinks in the old barracks? Yes, indeed.

The pool in the old YMCA was also an easy target.

More recently, the Cooper Library reflection pond served as nice dumping point as well.

The only thing that is different through the years is the location!

Sikes Hall Fire

Today's photos are of the Agricultural Building (now Sikes Hall) and were taken in the 1920’s.

This old Agricultural Building, like so many other buildings on campus, suffered a tremendous amount of fire damage on April 1, 1925. This, ironically, was just after a campus visit of the newly appointed President, Enoch Walter Sikes.

As if Mr. Sikes didn't have his hands full with rebuilding the agricultural building in the early days of his Clemson Presidency, the follow year Mechanical Hall was totally destroyed by fire.

Enoch Sikes indeed had a tough start as the President of the college, but today the old Agricultural Building holds his name in history, Sikes Hall.

The Road To Omaha continues as Clemson (39-16, 18-11 ACC), ranked as high as #14 in the nation, will travel to Tallahassee, FL to close the regular-season at #8 Florida State (43-11, 19-10 ACC) in the final game of the regular season at Dick Howser Stadium on Saturday. Game time is 3:00 PM (Saturday).

The games on Saturday will be televised by ESPNU and will also be broadcast live on the radio by Clemson Tiger Sports Network and WCCP 104.9 FM. Live stats will be available at ClemsonTigers.com.

Don Munson will provide play by play with Bob Mahoney offering color analysis for the series.

The Series

The #8 Florida State Seminoles scored two runs in the first inning and held on for a 2-1 victory over #14 Clemson in front of 5,086 fans at Dick Howser Stadium on Friday night. The Seminoles, who evened the series 1-1, improved to 43-11 overall and 19-10 in the ACC. The Tigers, who saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end, fell to 39-16 overall and 18-11 in the ACC.

Florida State scored two runs in the first inning and had runners at the corners with no outs before the Tigers worked out of the jam. Those were the only two runs of the game the Tiger pitching staff gave up. Clemson put its leadoff batter on base five straight times from innings 3-7, but only managed one run in those five frames and fell one run short.

Seminole starter Luke Weaver (6-2) earned the win by pitching a career-high 7.1 innings. He allowed seven hits, one run, and two walks with eight strikeouts. Billy Strode retired the only batter he faced in the eighth inning, then Robbie Coles pitched a hitless and scoreless ninth inning to record his ninth save of the season.

Matthew Crownover (7-2) suffered the loss, as he yielded five hits, two runs, and no walks with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. Clate Schmidt, who was making his first appearance since suffering an injury on May 6, pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing no hits, no runs, and no walks with one strikeout. Crownover and Schmidt combined to allow only two hits after the first inning.

Thursday night, Sophomore righthander Daniel Gossett pitched 6.0 scoreless innings to lead #14 Clemson to an 8-2 win over #8 Florida State in front of 5,053 fans at Dick Howser Stadium on Thursday night. The Tigers, who took a 1-0 lead in the series and won their ninth game in a row, improved to 39-15 overall and 18-10 in the ACC. The Seminoles dropped to 42-11 overall and 18-10 in ACC play.

Clemson scored six combined runs in the first four innings, then added two runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-0 lead. The Seminoles scratched with two runs in the seventh, but they left the bases loaded and could get no closer, as Clemson pulled even with Florida State atop the ACC Atlantic Division standings.

Gossett (9-3) earned the win by tossing 6.0 innings, allowing just three hits, no runs, and three walks with three strikeouts. Matt Campbell closed out the game with 2.0 hitless and scoreless innings pitched with three strikeouts. The four Tiger pitchers combined to yield only six hits, all singles, and stranded 10 runners on base.

Seminole starter Peter Miller (6-2) suffered the loss, as he surrendered three hits, two runs, and two walks with one strikeout in 1.1 innings pitched.

The Starting Pitchers

In game-three, Florida State will start sophomore lefty Brandon Leibrandt (8-4, 3.41 ERA) on the mound. The Alpharetta, GA native has made 13 starts for a total of 74.0 innings pitched. He has allowed 66 hits (.245 opponents’ batting average) and 25 walks with 69 strikeouts.

The Tigers will counter with freshman lefthander Zack Erwin (5-0, 2.88 ERA) on Saturday. The Duluth, GA native has made 16 relief appearances and three starts for a total of 50.0 innings pitched. He has surrendered 38 hits (.221 opponents’ batting average) and 17 walks with 26 strikeouts.

ACC StandingsThe Tigers fell into 3^rd place in the ACC Atlantic Division standings with the loss Friday. Clemson has an 18-11 league record. Florida State is also in first place in the division with a 19-10 record, while N.C. State is second at 18-10. In the overall ACC standings, Clemson is in 5^th place. The top-eight teams in the overall ACC standings will play in the 2013 ACC Tournament at Durham, NC.

The ACC Atlantic Division race will come down to the final day today when Clemson plays at Florida State and N.C. State plays at Duke. The following lays out the scenarios for the three teams in contention for the division title.

Florida State will win the division if it beats Clemson today. The Tigers will also win the division if we beat FSU today and NCSU loses to Duke. In that case, Clemson and Florida State will tie for the division title, but the Tigers will win the tiebreaker and be the #2 seed in the ACC Tournament. N.C. State will win the division if Clemson beats FSU and the Wolfpack beat Duke.

Temporary Barracks At Clemson In 1940’s

Today’s photos are from 1948 and show two different views of buildings that no longer exist at Clemson University.

The above picture is an aerial photo of Clemson and you can clearly see the white barracks sitting in a V where Lot 1 is now located. These were temporary barracks, constructed by the military during WWII. They were torn down just prior to the completion of Johnstone Hall in 1954.

The below photo is a close up view of the temporary barracks and was taken with your back to Death Valley, on the southwest corner of what is now Lot 1.

Barracks life made for a long day. Reveille was at dawn, and breakfast was as early as 6 a.m. In fact, in Clemson's early years, class was often finished in the morning hours, so that drill could be held in the afternoons. Lunch and dinner were served, and curfew was in effect so that the night started early and all cadets were accounted for.

There was always an incessant wave of cadets at any given time on detail, and Clemson cadet parades from this period were spectacular in both their professionalism and their school spirit.

Clemson will counter with freshman lefty Matthew Crownover (7-1, 1.90 ERA) on Friday. The Ringgold, GA native has made 12 starts and one relief appearance for a total of 61.2 innings pitched. He has yielded 54 hits (.241 opponents’ batting average) and 16 walks with 39 strikeouts.

ACC StandingsThe Tigers are now tied for 1st in the ACC Atlantic Division standings with a 18-10 league record. Florida State is also in first place in the division with a 18-10 record, while N.C. State is second at 17-10. In the overall ACC standings, Clemson is tied for 3^rd place. The top-eight teams in the overall ACC standings will play in the 2013 ACC Tournament at Durham, NC.

Tiger Band In 1940’s

Today’s photos are of Tiger Band in an era long gone in the history of Clemson College.

The above picture was taken sometime in the mid 1940’s and shows the band coming into Memorial Stadium in the Northwest corner. You can also see Clemson Cadets marching in with the band onto the field.

As you can see, the North lower deck does not extend as far as it does today. Additional sideline seating on the North and South lower decks were added in 1958. You can also notice that there are no visible trees on the Northwest bank.

By the time the new West Endzone was built several years ago, two massive trees were growing on that same Northwest bank.

Also notice that the original West Endzone has not been built yet (it was completed in 1960). You can also see the prefabs where Littlejohn Coliseum now sits and where we broadcast the Tiger Pregame Show and Tiger Tailgate Show each Saturday.

The next picture is from around the same era and was taken in Anderson, SC. I assume that Tiger Band was invited to a parade, something that was very common during this era.

The Road To Omaha continues as Clemson (38-15, 17-10 ACC), ranked as high as #14 in the nation, will travel to Tallahassee, FL to close the regular-season at #8 Florida State (42-10, 18-9 ACC) in a three-game series at Dick Howser Stadium from Thursday to Saturday. Game times are 6:00 PM (Thursday), 8:00 PM (Friday), and 3:00 PM (Saturday).

Thursday’s game will be available via webcast on ESPN3, while the games on Friday and Saturday will be televised by ESPNU. The Series

Clemson and Florida State have met 125 times, with the Seminoles holding a 66-58-1 lead in the series dating to the 1958 season. The Tigers have won eight of the last 11 games in the series after Florida State won five of the previous six meetings.

Last season at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, the Tigers won the first two games by scores of 7-2 and 9-7 before the top-ranked Seminoles rebounded to defeat Clemson 9-5 in the series-finale. Then in the ACC Tournament at Greensboro, NC, Jon McGibbon hit a three-run, walkoff homer to give Clemson a 9-7 victory over #1 Florida State. In 2011 at Dick Howser Stadium, Florida State won game-one 8-6 before Clemson won the final two games by scores of 7-4 and 8-5. Florida State later defeated Clemson 6-3 in the ACC Tournament at Durham, NC.

The Seminoles hold a 35-15-1 lead over the Tigers in games played at Florida State, while Clemson leads 33-30 in ACC regular-season games.

Jack Leggett has a 34-39 record against Florida State as Clemson’s head coach, including a 9-18 mark at Dick Howser Stadium. All 73 of Leggett’s games coached against Florida State have been against a top-25 ranked Seminole team. Under Leggett, the Tigers are also 29-35 against a top-10 Seminole squad.

The Starting Pitchers

In game-one, Florida State will start junior righthander Peter Miller (6-1, 3.04 ERA) on the mound. The Lutz, FL native has made 11 starts for a total of 53.1 innings pitched. He has allowed 51 hits (.252 opponents’ batting average) and 18 walks with 43 strikeouts.

The Tigers will counter with sophomore righty Daniel Gossett (8-3, 2.36 ERA) on Thursday. The Lyman, SC native has made 13 starts for a total of 80.0 innings pitched. He has surrendered 64 hits (.213 opponents’ batting average) and 28 walks with 80 strikeouts.

In game-two, the Seminoles will start sophomore righty Luke Weaver (5-2, 2.17 ERA) on the mound. The DeLand, FL native has made 11 starts and two relief appearances for a total of 70.2 innings pitched. He has given up 55 hits (.214 opponents’ batting average) and 14 walks with 83 strikeouts.

The Seminoles

Florida State, led by 35th-year Head Coach Mike Martin and ranked as high as #8 in the nation, enters the series against #14 Clemson with a 42-10 overall record and 18-9 ACC mark after winning two of three games at N.C. State from Saturday to Monday. The Seminoles, who are 39-0 when scoring at least four runs and have won 11 of their last 12 games, are 30-2 at home in 2013.

Florida State, who is 6-2 in one-run games, is averaging 7.0 runs per game and hitting .291 with a .431 slugging percentage and .417 on-base percentage thanks to 300 walks and 83 hit-by-pitches against 305 strikeouts. The team has also totaled 121 doubles, 14 triples, 29 home runs, and 37 stolen bases in 62 attempts.

DJ Stewart is hitting .328 with 20 doubles, four homers, 49 RBIs, and a team-high seven steals. Jose Brizuela is batting .328, while Marcus Davis is hitting .314 with 17 doubles, nine homers, and 49 RBIs. Stephen McGee has added eight homers, 45 RBIs, and 45 walks against 28 strikeouts as well.

The pitching staff has a 2.66 ERA and .234 opponents’ batting average along with 410 strikeouts against 156 walks in 460.0 innings pitched. Junior righthander Robby Coles has eight of the team’s 11 saves along with a 4-1 record, 1.20 ERA, .177 opponents’ batting average, and 33 strikeouts in 30.0 innings pitched over 25 relief appearances. Florida State, who has allowed 26 steals in 47 attempts, is fielding at a .965 clip as well.

The Tigers

Clemson, ranked as high as #14 in the nation, enters the series at #8 Florida State with a 38-15 overall record and 17-10 ACC mark after rallying to defeat USC Upstate 8-7 at home on Tuesday night. The Tigers, who have won eight games in a row and 22 of their last 26 games, are 11-6 on opponents’ home fields in 2013.

The Tigers are averaging 5.8 runs per game and hitting .282 with a .365 slugging percentage and .366 on-base percentage thanks to 229 walks and 26 hit-by-pitches against 333 strikeouts. Clemson has also totaled 74 doubles, 14 triples, 16 homers, and 94 stolen bases in 129 attempts.

Shane Kennedy, who is riding a 10-game hitting streak, leads the team in batting average (.326) and on-base percentage (.423) along with totaling four homers, 30 RBIs, and 17 steals. Garrett Boulware is batting .311 with seven homers and 43 RBIs, while Steve Wilkerson is hitting .310 with a team-high 16 doubles. Thomas Brittle has added a team-high 19 stolen bases as well.

The pitching staff has a 2.94 ERA and .258 opponents’ batting average in 481.0 innings pitched. The staff has allowed 168 walks against 348 strikeouts, good for a 2.07 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Junior righthander Matt Campbell has seven of the team’s 14 saves, while senior righty Scott Firth has four saves. The Tigers are fielding at a .971 clip as well.

Two Tigers will return to their home state of Florida this weekend, junior outfielder Joe Costigan (Naples) and junior utility player Shane Kennedy (Orlando).

Worth Noting

Clemson has five walkoff hits in 2013. Each of the last four walkoff hits have been by freshmen, Tyler Krieger (2), Kevin Bradley (1), and Steven Duggar (1).

ACC StandingsThe Tigers are in third place in the ACC Atlantic Division standings with a 17-10 league record. Florida State is in first place in the division with a 17-9 record, while N.C. State is second at 16-9. North Carolina is atop the overall ACC standings at 20-5. In the overall ACC standings, Clemson is in fifth place. Bradley’s First Career Homer a Memorable One

Freshman utility player Kevin Bradley (Pennington, NJ) made a last-minute start at first base against USC Upstate on May 14 due to Jon McGibbon’s illness. The switch-hitter only had two career RBIs entering the contest, but he stepped up and played a big role in Clemson’s dramatic 8-7 comeback victory.

With one out in the ninth inning and Clemson trailing 7-5, he hit the first pitch over the fence in left field for a three-run, walkoff homer. It was his first career home run, as he became the fifth Tiger in history and the first Tiger since 1988 to have his first career long ball be in walkoff fashion. It capped an outstanding game for Bradley, who went 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs, two runs, one walk, and one hit-by-pitch.

Olin Hall History

Today’s photo was taken in the late 1950’s and shows Olin Hall. Completed in 1953, Olin Hall was named for F.W. Olin by the John M. Olin Foundation, which made a $2 million gift to Clemson to construct the building.

In the photo, you can locate some of the infamous prefabs to the right of Olin Hall in the distance.

So…who is F.W. Olin? From the ASEE Prism Magazine Online:

There's a good chance that you've seen his legacy. His name is splashed across dozens of engineering buildings on campuses around the nation, a high-profile foundation, and soon an innovative new engineering college. But who is the man behind the legend?

Francis W. Olin's life was an example of hard work and ingenuity paying off. Born in Vermont in 1860, he received little formal education during his early years, instead studying on his own. He was determined to study engineering and his persistence finally earned him entrance into Cornell University.

While at Cornell, Olin paid the bills by teaching school, repairing farm machinery, and playing major league baseball for teams in Washington, D.C., and Detroit during the summers. An outfielder, Olin played 49 games over two seasons and could hold his own at the plate, batting .316 with one home run.

After graduating, Olin went to work designing textile-mill machinery. His big break came when he took over a powder mill construction contract. This was Olin's introduction to the munitions business, where he managed to reduce the number of explosions occurring in plants.

Later, he founded the Equitable Powder Manufacturing Company in 1892, and the Western Cartridge Company in 1902.

He also established the F.W. Olin Foundation in 1938, which has financed the construction of 72 engineering buildings. Up to his death in 1951, Olin had donated $21 million to the foundation. He lived modestly, dedicating much of his wealth and talents to the service of others.

Through the many schools which have received Olin Foundation grants, his devotion to engineering and science continues to live on.

Tiger Baseball Wins 8th In A Row and 22 Of Last 26 As Kevin Bradley Hits Walk Off 3 Run HR To Down USC-Upstate

Freshman Kevin Bradley hit a three-run, walkoff homer with one out in the ninth inning to lift #14 Clemson to an 8-7 win over USC Upstate at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday night. The Tigers, who won their eighth game in a row, improved to 38-15 with their dramatic victory in their regular-season home finale. The Spartans fell to 25-26 in 2013.

Clemson jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the second inning, but the Spartans responded with six runs in the third inning and maintained a 6-4 lead until the eighth inning. Clemson scored a run in the eighth, then USC Upstate answered again with a run in the top of the ninth inning to take another two-run lead.

The Tigers put two of their first three batters on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, then Bradley, a switch-hitter who was batting lefthanded, belted the first pitch to deep left field. Leftfielder Tyler Lesch gave a valiant effort with a leaping attempt, but the ball cleared his glove by inches for the game-winning homer.

It was the Pennington, NJ native's first career home run. Bradley was a last-minute addition to the starting lineup at first base due to Jon McGibbon's illness. McGibbon started the first 52 games of the season at first base.

Bradley, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one walk, and one hit-by-pitch, became the first Tiger to have his first career long ball be in walkoff fashion since Brian Kowitz accomplished the feat with a solo homer against Georgia in Clemson's 13-12 win on February 25, 1988. It was also the fifth time in school history a Tiger hit his first career home run in walkoff fashion.

Scott Firth (6-4), the last of six Tiger pitchers, earned the win. He gave up one run on one hit in 1.0 innings pitched. Jonathan Meyer tossed 3.2 scoreless innings in relief with four strikeouts as well.

Chad Sobotka (0-4) suffered the loss, as he surrendered three runs on two hits in 0.1 innings pitched. Spartan starter Chris Cox pitched 7.0 strong innings, allowing just five hits, four runs (one earned), and two walks with four strikeouts.

The Tigers took the game's first lead in the second inning. Shane Kennedy lined a one-out single to right-center to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and Tyler Krieger reached on a throwing error on his sacrifice bunt. Bradley was hit-by-pitch to load the bases, then Thomas Brittle laced a single to right field to score Kennedy. Tyler Slaton was hit by a 1-2 pitch to plate Krieger. Two batters later, Steve Wilkerson grounded a two-out single through the left side to score Bradley and Brittle, giving Clemson a 4-0 lead.

In the third inning, nine straight Spartans reached base with one out, as USC Upstate scored six runs. Tyler Miller reached on an error by Krieger at short, Jordan Stampler walked, and Gaither Bumgardner singled to right-center to load the bases. Luke Weber was hit-by-pitch to score Miller, then Brody Greer was hit-by-pitch to score Stampler. Lesch unloaded the bases with a three-run triple over the head of Brittle in center to score Bumgardner, Weber, and Greer, giving the Spartans the lead. Brandon Patterson followed with a single up the middle to score Lesch.

Bradley led off the eighth inning with walk, but was erased on Brittle's fielder's choice. After pinch-hitter Joe Costigan walked, Maleeke Gibson singled through the right side to score Brittle. But for the fifth inning in a row, Clemson stranded a runner at second base after Steven Duggar grounded out to short in a close play at first base.

The Spartans added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Lesch led off with a four-pitch walk and advanced to second on Erik Samples' sacrifice bunt. Trey Richardson then ripped a single off Kennedy's glove at third to score Lesch.

Garrett Boulware led off the bottom of the ninth inning with an infield single and Kennedy grounded out to first. After Krieger walked, Bradley, who entered the plate appearance with two career RBIs, belted the first pitch over the fence in left field for an opposite-field, game-winning home run.

Along with Bradley, who totaled career highs for runs, hits, and RBIs, Wilkerson went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Bumgardner went 4-for-5 with a run to lead the Spartans, who outhit the Tigers 11-8. Lesch added two runs and three RBIs as well.

Clemson will conclude the regular season with a three-game series at #8 Florida State starting Thursday at 6:00 PM.

Today’s photo is from the 1930’s and shows a familiar site for many football fans that pass through Pendleton on the way to football games each Saturday.

This building was the original location of the Pendleton Farmer’s Society. This is the same building where Thomas Green Clemson first made public his plan for the founding of Clemson College.

The Road To Omaha Continues

The Road To Omaha continues as Clemson (37-15), ranked as high as #14 in the nation, will host USC Upstate (25-25) on Tuesday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM. The contest is the Tigers’ last regular-season home game of the season.

The game will be available via webcast on TigerCast at ClemsonTigers.com. The game will also be broadcast live on the radio by WCCP (104.9 FM) out of Clemson. Live stats will be available online at ClemsonTigers.com as well.

The Series

Clemson and USC Upstate have met twice, with the Tigers winning both games at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The last meeting took place on April 21, 2010, a game the Tigers won 22-4. On March 18, 2009, Clemson defeated the Spartans 14-0. Jack Leggett is 2-0 against USC Upstate as Clemson’s head coach. Leggett was also 6-2 against the Spartans as Western Carolina’s head coach, meaning he is 8-2 all-time against USC Upstate.

The Starting Pitchers

USC Upstate will start senior lefthander Chris Cox (5-3, 3.11 ERA) on the mound. The Simpsonville, SC native has made nine starts and two relief appearances for a total of 46.1 innings pitched. He has allowed 53 hits (.286 opponents’ batting average) and 15 walks with 28 strikeouts.

The Tigers will counter with freshman righthander Brody Koerner (1-1, 2.67 ERA) on Tuesday. The Concord, NC native has made five relief appearances and four starts for a total of 27.0 innings pitched. He has surrendered 21 hits (.214 opponents’ batting average) and 21 walks with 27 strikeouts.

The Spartans

USC Upstate, led by 16th-year Head Coach Matt Fincher, enters Tuesday’s game at #14 Clemson with a 25-25 overall record and 8-16 Atlantic Sun mark after being swept at Kennesaw State over the weekend. The Spartans are 7-12 on opponents’ home fields in 2013.

USC Upstate, who is 4-8 in one-run games, is averaging 6.1 runs per game and hitting .291 with a .388 slugging percentage and .375 on-base percentage thanks to 187 walks and 59 hit-by-pitches against 268 strikeouts. The team has also totaled 89 doubles, 13 triples, 18 home runs, and 32 stolen bases in 34 attempts.

Gaither Bumgardner is hitting a team-best .327 with 33 RBIs, while Luke Weber is batting .319 with four homers and 35 RBIs. Brandon Patterson (.318), Brody Greer (.317), and Trey Richardson (.311) are also hitting .311 or better, while Richardson has added eight home runs and 43 RBIs.

The pitching staff has a 4.14 ERA and .267 opponents’ batting average along with 335 strikeouts against 163 walks in 441.0 innings pitched. Sophomore righty Chad Sobotka has seven of the team’s eight saves along with a 2.87 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 31.1 innings pitched over 21 relief appearances. USC Upstate, who has allowed 39 steals in 61 attempts, is fielding at a .961 clip as well.

The Tigers

Clemson, ranked as high as #14 in the nation, enters Tuesday’s game against USC Upstate with a 37-15 overall record and 17-10 ACC mark after sweeping Georgia Southern in a three-game series at home last weekend. The Tigers, who have won seven games in a row and 21 of their last 25 games, are 25-9 at home in 2013.

The Tigers are averaging 5.7 runs per game and hitting .283 with a .365 slugging percentage and .366 on-base percentage thanks to 224 walks and 24 hit-by-pitches against 329 strikeouts. Clemson has also totaled 73 doubles, 14 triples, 15 homers, and 91 stolen bases in 126 attempts.

Shane Kennedy leads the team in batting average (.326) and on-base percentage (.419) along with totaling four homers, 30 RBIs, and 16 steals. Garrett Boulware is batting .314 with seven homers and 43 RBIs, while Steve Wilkerson is hitting .307 with 15 doubles. Thomas Brittle has added a team-high 18 stolen bases as well.

The pitching staff has a 2.88 ERA and .257 opponents’ batting average in 472.0 innings pitched. The staff has allowed 165 walks against 340 strikeouts, good for a 2.06 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Junior righty Matt Campbell has seven of the team’s 14 saves, while senior righty Scott Firth has four saves. The Tigers are fielding at a .971 clip as well.

Worth Noting

Clemson’s 2.88 ERA is its best mark since 1992 (2.86 ERA).

Polls

The Tigers moved up in the top 25 of all three polls after going 7-0 in seven games last week. Clemson moved up one spot to #14 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and two spots to #17 in the Baseball America rankings. The Tigers also moved up three spots to #19 in the USA Today coaches poll.

ACC Standings

The Tigers are in third place in the ACC Atlantic Division standings with a 17-10 league record. Florida State is in first place in the division with a 17-9 record, while N.C. State is second at 16-9. North Carolina is atop the overall ACC standings at 20-5. In the overall ACC standings, Clemson is in fifth place. The top-eight teams in the overall ACC standings will play in the 2013 ACC Tournament at Durham, NC.

Eight Shutouts

The Clemson pitching staff has accumulated eight shutouts in 2013, its highest total since it had 10 shutouts in the 1996 season with the likes of Kris Benson and Billy Koch. Only one of the eight shutouts has seen a Tiger pitch a complete game, therefore seven of the eight shutouts have been team shutouts.

The school record for shutouts in a season is 11, set by the 1977 team. Clemson’s eight shutouts in 2013 are tied for fourth-most in Tiger history.

Seven Wins in Seven Days

Clemson won seven games in seven days from May 6-12. The Tigers won a pair of doubleheaders during the stretch, one over Maryland on May 6 and one at Furman on May 8. Clemson completed the week with a three-game sweep of Georgia Southern from May 10-12.

It marked the first time Clemson won seven games in a seven-day period since March 3-9, 1994. During that stretch, Clemson outscored the opposition 60-29.

Overall, Clemson has won at least seven games in seven days 14 times, but this was the first time Clemson did it in the month of May.

The first time it was accomplished came from March 14-19, 1970, when Head Coach Bill Wilhelm’s team posted a 7-1 record in that six-day period. From February 24-28, 1982, a five-day period, Clemson had a 7-0 record and outscored the opposition 55-20. That is the only time Clemson has won seven games in five days.

The most wins in a seven-day period in Clemson history took place from March 1-7, 1987, when the Tigers posted an 8-1 record during that time period.

Gibson Providing Late-Season Spark

Freshman outfielder Maleeke Gibson (Sumter, SC) has come on late in the season to provide a spark in the Tiger lineup. He has played 10 of the last 11 games with seven starts and is 11-for-32 (.344) with 11 RBIs, 12 runs, and six steals in the those 10 games.

Overall, he is hitting .240 with two doubles, 13 RBIs, 16 runs, and seven stolen bases in 31 games (18 starts). In the doubleheader at Furman on May 8, he went 4-for-10 with four RBIs and three steals.

Today’s photo is from the 1994 football season and shows Nelson Welch preparing to kick off vs. Wake Forest inside of Death Valley on October 29th.

Clemson would finish the 1994 season a disappointing 5-6. Tommy West was in his first year as head coach of Clemson (he did coach the bowl game the year before against Kentucky).

West was taking over the Tiger program from Ken Hatfield. West would finish his time at Clemson 31-28 (21-19 in the ACC). Ironically, West’s only bowl victory during his time at Clemson was that Kentucky game in the Peach Bowl…a game that he was only the coach for a couple of weeks prior.

Clemson, ranked as high as #15 in the nation, went 7-0 in seven games this past week. It marked the first time since 1996 that Clemson played and won seven games in a seven-day stretch. Clemson finished the Maryland series on Monday with a doubleheader sweep at home, then the Tigers swept Furman in a doubleheader at Fluor Field in Greenville, SC on Wednesday. Then over the weekend, Clemson swept Georgia Southern in a three-game series at home.

On the week, the Tigers outscored the opposition 63-18 and batted .349 with a .432 slugging percentage and .460 on-base percentage. They also totaled 10 doubles, three triples, one homer, 44 walks and eight hit-by-pitches against only 36 strikeouts, and 20 stolen bases. Clemson fielded at a .972 clip as well.

Shane Kennedy led Clemson at the plate by going 12-for-24 (.500) with a triple, homer, six RBIs, 10 runs, four walks, and five steals. Steve Wilkerson went 11-for-24 (.458) with three doubles, one triple, seven RBIs, nine runs, 10 walks, a .618 on-base percentage, and one steal. Jon McGibbon went 10-for-22 (.455) with one double, nine RBIs, seven runs, four walks, and one steal, while Thomas Brittle went 8-for-19 (.421) with one double, seven RBIs, six runs, and three steals.

The Tiger pitching staff had a 1.57 ERA and .220 opponents’ batting average on the week. The staff also allowed 50 hits and 24 walks with 48 strikeouts in 63.0 innings pitched.

In two starts, Matthew Crownover earned two wins. In 13.0 innings pitched, the freshman lefthander allowed just seven hits, no runs, and four walks with 10 strikeouts. Fellow freshman lefty Zack Erwin also recorded two wins in two starts.

Clemson won the final two games against Maryland at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on May 6 to win the series 2-1. Both teams scored 14 runs in the series, while the Terrapins outhit the Tigers .288 to .236. McGibbon led the Tigers by going 3-for-7 (.429) with three RBIs, while Kennedy and Wilkerson both totaled four hits in the series. The Tiger pitching staff had a 2.67 ERA and 17 strikeouts against eight walks.

In game-two on May 6, which was the first game of a doubleheader, Scott Firth struck out two batters with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to preserve Clemson’s 3-2 win over Maryland. The Tigers scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead, then Maryland scored a run in the eighth inning to cut Clemson’s lead in half. But Firth worked out of a jam in the ninth inning to record the save, while Erwin earned the victory in his first career ACC start by allowing only one run on five hits in 6.0 innings pitched. Wilkerson and McGibbon both had two hits to lead the Tigers, who were outhit 10-5.

In game-three on May 6, which was the second game of a doubleheader, Clemson scored four runs in the first inning on its way to a 9-5 win over Maryland. The Tigers scored a run in the sixth inning to build an 8-0 lead before Maryland took advantage of two Tiger errors to score five runs in the seventh inning. But Matt Campbell pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to record the save. Crownover pitched 6.0 scoreless innings of four-hit ball to earn the victory. Five different Tigers had two hits apiece to lead Clemson’s 12-hit attack.

Clemson swept Furman in a doubleheader by a combined score of 26-4 at Fluor Field on May 8. The Tigers outhit the Paladins .389 to .197 and totaled 28 hits, 18 walks, three hit-by-pitches, a .516 on-base percentage, and 12 steals. McGibbon went 5-for-6 with a double, four RBIs, five runs, two walks, and one steal. Wilkerson went 5-for-8 with a double, triple, five RBIs, two runs, and four walks. Kennedy went 4-for-7 with a homer, two RBIs, four runs, one walk, and four steals. Brittle, Maleeke Gibson, and Steven Duggar also added four hits apiece. The Tiger pitching staff had an 0.50 ERA and allowed just one earned run and 13 hits with 15 strikeouts.

In game-one on May 8, which was the first game of a doubleheader, Clemson scored six runs in the seventh inning on its way to a 14-2 win over Furman. The Tigers outhit the Paladins 14-2 and were led by Wilkerson, who went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, four RBIs, and two walks. Kennedy and Brittle added three hits apiece, while Gibson and Duggar totaled three RBIs apiece. In his first career start away from home, Brody Koerner allowed just one hit and no runs with seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched to earn the victory.

In game-two on May 8, which was the second game of a doubleheader, Clemson broke open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning in its 12-2 win over Furman. McGibbon went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs in Clemson’s 14-hit attack. Kennedy added a solo homer, three runs, and three of the Tigers’ seven steals in the game. Kyle Schnell pitched 2.1 perfect innings in relief with two strikeouts to earn the win. Schnell and Jackson Campana combined to hold Furman hitless and scoreless over the last four innings.

Clemson swept Georgia Southern by a combined score of 25-7 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium from May 10-12. The Tigers outhit the Eagles .357 to .204 and totaled four doubles, one triple, 17 walks against only 16 strikeouts, and seven stolen bases. Garrett Boulware went 6-for-10 with four RBIs and five runs, while Kennedy went 5-for-10 with a triple, three RBIs, three runs, and two walks. The Tiger pitching staff had a 2.00 ERA and 24 strikeouts, while the Clemson defense committed just one error in the series.

In game-one on May 10, Daniel Gossett struck out 12 batters to lead Clemson to a 7-1 win over Georgia Southern. In 7.1 innings pitched, Gossett allowed just two hits, one run, and two walks with 12 strikeouts to earn the victory. Three Tiger relievers combined to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings to close out the game. Clemson scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead and cruised the rest of the way. Boulware and Mike Triller both went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Kennedy went 2-for-2 with two of Clemson’s nine walks in the game.

In game-two on May 11, Crownover, Patrick Andrews, and Campana combined on a four-hit shutout in Clemson’s 7-0 win over Georgia Southern. Crownover allowed just three hits, no runs, and three walks with eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched to earn the win, then Andrews and Campana each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game. No Eagle baserunner advanced past second base in the game. Duggar went 3-for-4 to lead Clemson’s 12-hit attack, while Boulware, Kennedy, and Tyler Krieger added two hits apiece.

In game-three on May 12, Clemson pounded out 14 hits in its 11-6 win over Georgia Southern. The Tigers scored five runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead and never looked back. Five different Tigers had two hits apiece, as Gibson went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs. Krieger went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as well. Tiger batters combined to walk five times against only two walks. Erwin tossed 5.0 innings to earn the win, then four Tiger relievers each pitched an inning to close out the game.

2013 Season Notes

Mother’s Day In 1939 On Bowman Field

Today’s photos are from the Spring of 1939 and are of Mother’s Day being celebrated on Bowman Field.

The crowd on this day was estimated at 10,000 people, not including the Cadets that were on Parade.

Mother's Day was traditionally a very big event for the cadets and their families. Starting 10 years after these pictures were taken, Tiger Brotherhood began a tradition of awarding Mother Of The Year to a Clemson mother during Military presentations on Mother’s Day on Bowman Field.

During the 1939 year, Clemson football was ranked in the Associated Press poll for the first time ever, moving up to #16 in the poll. Clemson would eventually accept a bid in the first Cotton Bowl behind the legs and arm of Banks McFadden.

In Clemson's first bowl appearance, it defeated Boston College 6-3. Charlie Timmons scored the game's lone touchdown from two yards out.

Jess Neely resigned as athletic director and football coach to accept the head football coaching job at Rice University. Neely inherited a $47,000 deficit when he arrived in 1931 and earned Clemson $100,000 during his tenure and left Clemson $57,000 in the treasury. His overall record at Clemson was 43-35-7.

Frank Howard was named coach on January 11th, 1940.

The Series
Freshman lefthander Matthew Crownover tossed 7.0 scoreless innings of three-hit ball to lead #15 Clemson to a 7-0 victory over Georgia Southern in front of 5,347 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday night. The Tigers, who took a 2-0 lead in the series, improved to 36-15 on the season. The Eagles dropped to 25-25 in 2013.

Clemson scored single runs in the first three innings to build a 3-0 lead, then the Tigers put the game away with four runs in the seventh inning.

Crownover (7-1) set career highs for innings pitched and strikeouts (8) while allowing just three singles and three walks to earn the win. Patrick Andrews and Jackson Campana both pitched a scoreless inning to close out the contest. The three Tiger hurlers did not allow an Eagle baserunner to advance past second base in the game.

Jason Richman (4-4), the first of three Eagle pitchers, suffered the loss. He yielded five hits, three runs (two earned), and two walks with one strikeout in 2.0 innings pitched.

The Starting Pitchers
Both teams’ starting pitchers for game-three on Sunday have yet to be determined.

The Eagles
Georgia Southern, led by 14th-year Head Coach Rodney Hennon, who played two seasons (1990,91) under Head Coach Jack Leggett at Western Carolina, enters the series at #15 Clemson with a 25-23 overall record and 13-14 SoCon mark after losing two of three games against Furman at home last weekend. The Eagles are 9-10 on the road in 2013.

Georgia Southern, who is 7-5 in one-run games, is averaging 6.0 runs per game and hitting .266 with a .381 slugging percentage and .361 on-base percentage thanks to 199 walks and 59 hit-by-pitches against 424 strikeouts. The team has also totaled 88 doubles, eight triples, 29 home runs, and 62 stolen bases in 84 attempts.

Robbie Dodds is hitting .339 with three homers and 29 RBIs, while T.D. Davis is batting .302 with 14 doubles, 11 homers, and 42 RBIs. Ben Morgan is hitting .297 with five home runs, 32 RBIs, and a team-high 20 steals. Scooter Williams has added 18 stolen bases as well.

The pitching staff has a 5.31 ERA and .309 opponents’ batting average along with 373 strikeouts against 157 walks in 432.1 innings pitched. Senior righthander Justin Hess and sophomore righty Matt McCall both have four saves. Georgia Southern, who has allowed 53 steals in 72 attempts, is fielding at a .965 clip as well.

The Tigers

The Tigers are averaging 5.6 runs per game and hitting .278 with a .362 slugging percentage and .362 on-base percentage thanks to 207 walks and 24 hit-by-pitches against 313 strikeouts. Clemson has also totaled 69 doubles, 13 triples, 15 homers, and 84 stolen bases in 116 attempts.

Women Enroll At Clemson

Today’s photos are from the 1970’s and most of them appeared in TAPS.

Before the mid 1950’s, Clemson was a single gender Military College. By the time these pictures were taken in the early 1970’s, Clemson’s demographics were changing quickly. When the first official coeds (degree-seeking female students) started classes in the mid-1950s, there were only three female faculty members to 313 male faculty.

But by the mid-1970s, 150 women taught at Clemson, forming about 12 percent of the faculty. Another milestone was the 1983 designation of the first female faculty member, education professor Elizabeth Galloway, as an Alumni Distinguished Professor.

Three years later, Carol Bleser, a highly regarded Southern historian, was brought to Clemson as the Katherine and Calhoun Lemon Professor of History, the first female titled professor.

By the 1990s, there were 303 female faculty representing 22 percent of the total. Today, Clemson has 346 permanent female faculty members, 124 temporary female faculty, and eight female named professors.

The Road To Omaha Continues!

The Road To Omaha continues as Clemson (35-15), ranked as high as #15 in the nation, will host Georgia Southern (25-24) in a three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium this weekend. Game times are 6:30 PM (Saturday) and 1:00 PM (Sunday).

Both games will be available via webcast on TigerCast at ClemsonTigers.com. Both games will also be broadcast live on the radio by WCCP (104.9 FM) out of Clemson. Live stats will be available at ClemsonTigers.com for all three games as well.

Roy Philpott will call play by play with Bob Mahoney providing color commentary.

The Series
Sophomore righthander Daniel Gossett struck out a season-high 12 batters to lead #15 Clemson to a 7-1 victory over Georgia Southern at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday night. The Tigers, who took a 1-0 lead in the series, improved to 35-15 on the season. The Eagles dropped to 25-24 in 2013.

The Tigers scored a run in the first inning and never relinquished the lead. Clemson added three runs in the fourth inning, one run in the fifth, and two runs in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Gossett (8-3) pitched 7.1 strong innings to earn the win. He allowed just two hits, one run, and two walks with 12 strikeouts. He also retired the first 10 batters of the game.

Justin Hess (4-5), the first of three Georgia Southern pitchers, suffered the loss. He yielded five hits, five runs, and seven walks with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.

The Starting PitchersIn game-two, the Eagles will start freshman lefthander Jason Richman (4-3, 5.62 ERA) on the mound. The Alpharetta, GA native has made 12 starts for a total of 65.2 innings pitched. He has given up 86 hits (.320 opponents’ batting average) and 24 walks with 41 strikeouts.

Clemson will counter with freshman lefty Matthew Crownover (6-1, 2.14 ERA) on Saturday. The Ringgold, GA native has made 11 starts and one relief appearance for a total of 54.2 innings pitched. He has yielded 51 hits (.252 opponents’ batting average) and 13 walks with 31 strikeouts.

Both teams’ starting pitchers for game-three on Sunday have yet to be determined.

The EaglesGeorgia Southern, led by 14th-year Head Coach Rodney Hennon, who played two seasons (1990,91) under Head Coach Jack Leggett at Western Carolina, enters the series at #15 Clemson with a 25-23 overall record and 13-14 SoCon mark after losing two of three games against Furman at home last weekend. The Eagles are 9-10 on the road in 2013.

The pitching staff has a 5.31 ERA and .309 opponents’ batting average along with 373 strikeouts against 157 walks in 432.1 innings pitched. Senior righthander Justin Hess and sophomore righty Matt McCall both have four saves. Georgia Southern, who has allowed 53 steals in 72 attempts, is fielding at a .965 clip as well.

The TigersClemson, ranked as high as #15 in the nation, enters the series against Georgia Southern with a 34-15 overall record and 17-10 ACC mark after sweeping Furman in a doubleheader on the road on Wednesday. The Tigers, who are also coming off two wins in three games over Maryland at home last weekend, are 22-9 at home in 2013. Clemson has won 18 of its last 22 games overall and 12 of its last 16 ACC games as well.

The pitching staff has a 2.93 ERA and .260 opponents’ batting average in 445.0 innings pitched. The staff has allowed 154 walks against 316 strikeouts, good for a 2.05 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Junior righthander Matt Campbell has seven of the team’s 14 saves, while senior righty Scott Firth has four saves. The Tigers are fielding at a .970 clip as well.

Five Tiger Players to Graduate on FridayFive Tiger players will graduate on Friday (May 10) in commencement ceremonies in Littlejohn Coliseum, outfielder Thomas Brittle (community recreation, sport, & camp management), righthander Scott Firth (sociology), righthander Mike Kent (management), righthander Jonathan Meyer (management), and lefthander Joseph Moorefield (community recreation, sport, & camp management). Also graduating will be former Tiger players and current Student Assistant Coaches Brad Chalk (sport management) and Stephen Faris (sport management).

Triller ThrillingFreshman outfielder Mike Triller (Rutland, VT) has had few opportonuties to make his mark in 2013. But when given the chance, he has done his part to contribute to Clemson’s success. In 14 games (one start), he is 5-for-12 (.417) with two doubles, three RBIs, and one steal.

Triller made his first career start near his home state at Boston College on April 7 and went 1-for-3. He also ended the game with a running catch down the left-field line in Clemson’s 1-0 victory that sealed the Tigers’ sweep of the series.

Clemson’s Head Cheerleader

Today’s photos are of Randy Jackson, Clemson’s head cheerleader in 1972. The above photo shows Randy in action, doing everything he can to pump up this Tiger crowd that was “suffering” from the last few seasons of the Hootie Ingram era at Clemson.

Randy is the father of someone you may know of on Tigernet, ShoelessCU. If you don’t know ShoelessCU, you have certainly seen some of the videos of Clemson football that he has created and posted via the web and Youtube.

Joe’s dad was Randy Jackson, and he posted a nice tribute on Tigernet several years ago about his father that included a bunch of great stories about being the head cheerleader at Clemson. Here you can read the thread and see some accompanying pictures.

The next picture is of Randy Jackson in the old Tiger suit, nicknamed the Rat Pack. It was dubbed the Rat Pack because of how hot it was to wear the suit.

And here is one final picture of Randy saluting the student section during the Clemson/South Carolina game in 1972 (see chicken Randy has in his hand). I assume this was his last game as the head cheerleader and Tiger.

The Road To Omaha continues as Clemson (34-15), ranked as high as #15 in the nation, will host Georgia Southern (25-23) in a three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium this weekend. Game times are 7:00 PM (Friday), 6:30 PM (Saturday), and 1:00 PM (Sunday).

The Series
Clemson and Georgia Southern have met 79 times, with the Tigers leading 51-27-1 in the series dating to the 1959 season. The two teams have not met since 2010, when Clemson defeated the Eagles 22-6 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers also beat Georgia Southern 3-0 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in 2007.

The previous four meetings took place away from Tigertown. Clemson won both games in 2004 at Greenville, NC, while the Tigers also defeated the Eagles twice in two games at Charleston, SC in 2003. Clemson has won 10 games in a row in the series dating to Georgia Southern’s 12-9 win in 10 innings at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on March 13, 2001.

The two teams played one of the longest doubleheaders in NCAA history on April 21, 1996. Against a Tiger team that went on to the College World Series, Georgia Southern defeated Clemson in both games of the doubleheader by scores of 8-6 and 9-7.

What made that day one for the history books was the fact that game-one lasted 10 innings and game-two lasted 18 innings. Therefore, the two teams played 28 innings in one day, as it took eight hours and 44 minutes to complete both games, not counting 31 minutes in between games.

Clemson and Georgia Southern have not played a three-game series over one weekend since 1989, when the Eagles swept the Tigers in Statesboro.

The Tigers lead 26-12 at Clemson and 25-11 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Jack Leggett is 12-5 against Georgia Southern as Clemson’s head coach, including a 7-4 record at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Leggett was also 6-6 against the Eagles as Western Carolina’s head coach, meaning he is 18-11 all-time against Georgia Southern.

The Starting Pitchers
In game-one, Georgia Southern will start senior righty Justin Hess (4-4, 3.79 ERA) on the mound. The Panama City, FL native has made 10 starts and nine relief appearances for a total of 73.2 innings pitched. He has allowed 82 hits (.280 opponents’ batting average) and 24 walks with 92 strikeouts.

The Tigers will counter with sophomore righty Daniel Gossett (7-3, 2.48 ERA) on Friday. The Lyman, SC native has made 12 starts for a total of 72.2 innings pitched. He has surrendered 62 hits (.224 opponents’ batting average) and 26 walks with 68 strikeouts.

In game-two, the Eagles will start freshman lefthander Jason Richman (4-3, 5.62 ERA) on the mound. The Alpharetta, GA native has made 12 starts for a total of 65.2 innings pitched. He has given up 86 hits (.320 opponents’ batting average) and 24 walks with 41 strikeouts.
