A recent discovery of mine on Instagram is Humans of New York. Brandon Stanton, the very talented photographer, takes the most striking portraits of every day people in New York and has the most uncanny knack for drawing people out of themselves in a few profound words. Based on the success of this blog and his various social media channels, Brandon has a book coming out on 15th October which is available for pre-order here.

Always on the lookout for an easy and accessible DIY project I can complete in a reasonable amount of time, this one recently caught my eye. Spotted on this blog, the end result is striking and the instructions couldn't be more simple.

Get hold of some metal rolls in gold (copper or silver would work equally well), wrap the metal sheet around a simple cylindrical vase and seal the edge with tape.

The September Issue

Made famous by the film of the same title which centered on the inner machinations of Vogue's biggest and arguably best annual issue. J Crew, who create some of the most visually striking style guides, took their style to the next and released their September Style Guide on Pinterest. Very clever way to get immediate and direct feedback on what people love.

Here are a few of my favourite picks which are now available for pre-order. I love the pops of pink, the focus on classic Autumnal hues like burgundy, navy, black, tank and the retro yet modern use of geometric prints. And as always with J Crew, with a heavy handed dose of sparkle thrown in for good measure.

London always has been and always will be one of my favourite cities. It's where I grew up, and even though I've made a life for myself in San Francisco, I still consider London home too. Summers in London are always unbelievably good fun. There's something about occasional bursts of great weather in a cosmopolitan city, warm days, balmy evenings and late night sunsets that is just too much fun every single year. It's been a while since I was in London during summer, but here's an ideal outfit to take you from day to evening. I love the very feminine pairing of pinks which are given a polished finish with the gold, tan and leopard.

Weekends are always a great time to finally get round to some of the beautiful craft projects you pinned during the week on Pinterest. Not easily lured into deceptively complicated projects, my focus always remains firmly on the simplest of projects. After all, they're far more likely to turn out as expected which is half the fun!

Here are a few self favourites I came across this week.

Mason jars can be used for infinite purposes and easily sprayed in a couple of minutes. I love the combinations of minty hues and gold.

Re-purpose the prettiest tea or sweet cans by super-gluing a magnet on the back and voila, multi-purpose fridge magnets.

I came across this pretty little clutch on Accessorize and thought it would be so easy to spruce up an old one with a splattering of pansy applique, or any other applique that catches your eye.

A few weeks ago, I was having a conversation with a friend who was in panic mode about a last minute beach trip with her BF. The cause of the panic being her need to find a new bikini, which is something most of us can relate to under the best of circumstances and the added pressure of this was it was a holiday with a new boyfriend. I had a similar conversation with a friend who recently had her second child. Instead of beating themselves up, I suggested easing off the gas and just getting a one piece. With so many options available right now, they're quite often more flattering and supportive (for those blessed with a more ample chest) than most bikinis. As we approach September, a lot of swimwear is on sale so now is a great time to scoop up a fab find for your late summer holiday or if you're lucky enough, your Christmas sun-seeking holiday.

Kimono

I recently came across this beautiful photo of blogger Aimee Song from Song of Style. The pink blossom background, the delicate and striking kimono, the contrast of the distressed boyfriend jeans all work together perfectly. I've loved kimono inspired tops like this for a long time but I've never quite managed to find one I love enough to slap down the plastic for. This one is making me think about it all over again.

Growing up in England, most of my travel and holidays were around Europe, Africa, the Middle East with a trip to India and Thailand. As far as America went, New York and DC were the only places I'd visited before we moved to San Francisco. Once in San Francisco, I couldn't wait for our first trip to LA. LA, LA big city of dreams. It always seemed so sunny, so glamorous, so pretty and it's where the majority of American TV and films were created for us to watch and form our not entirely accurate perception of America and Americans. About a year after we moved to SF, we made our first trip to LA for a week at it was absolutely fantastic. My boyfriend (now husband) had a trade show to attend so while he was busy by day I'd head to a different part of the city to explore. Summer time always makes me think of holidays and this outfit is the perfect combination of all things LA to me.

Summer Picnic

One of my favourite things to do on weekends in summer is hop in the car, head North or South and find a nice spot for a picnic. When we lived in London, every Sunday in summer we'd head over to Hampstead Heath with a picnic basket and years later, our favourite weekend treats remain the same. While we don't necessarily have a single spot that we go to over and over again here, that's largely because San Francisco and the surrounding areas have so much to offer we feel like we're missing out if we don't make an effort to check out new places. Our spread has remained consistent over the years, San Pellegrino, baguette, prosciutto, manchego, grilled chicken, cherries or grapes and some brownies, cookies or banana bread to finish off.

Here are a few links I've come across over the past week that I've loved for differing reasons.

The big news of the week was the arrival of the Royal Baby! (I grew up in England, let it go). Like millions of people across the globe, I'm a little bit in love with Kate and William. They manage to execute their public appearances with an ease and confidence that most people can't manage without a million zoom lenses in their face. 11 hours pain free labour is impressive enough but the really surprising part of this photo was her post partum belly! Until a few weeks ago, I had no real idea what a post partum belly looked like as women across the world do Houdini proud in their ability to hide it! So thank you Kate for showing the world what women look like the day after birth....albeit not quite as fresh faced and glossy maned as you. (The Daily Beast)

Still on Kate? Yes. The blue polka dot dress appears to be a nod to Diana's outfit she wore standing on the same staircase when she showed William to the world years before. Oh and Jenny Packham (designer of the beautiful blue polka dot dress) saw her wbesite crash the day after with all the extra traffic from people trying to get their hands on the beauty. (Daily Mail).
